Carlisle County Virtual High School

Handbook

Description

Carlisle County Virtual High School is a non-traditional, voluntary program using

flexible scheduling and creating an alternative for students who may benefit from a

differently structured independent mode for credit achievement. This program will

address the educational needs of sixteen (16) to twenty-one (21) year olds and allow

progress toward academic completion of a diploma.

Graduation Requirements

1. Twenty-two (22) credits earned

2. Complete the state mandated testing

Grading Scale

A= 100 – 90%

B= 89 – 80%

C= 79 – 70%

Grades below a C are not acceptable on a transcript. Any students earning less that

70% for a course will conference with the instructor. Together, they will decide what the

best course of action will be for the student satisfactorily earning the course credit.

NOTE: Students entering Carlisle County Virtual High School who have previously

attended a non-accredited school will enter under probationary status. Evaluation by the

administration of the student’s transcript and earned credits will determine grade level

placement. This evaluation may include testing. In all sequential course work (such as

English 1,2,3,and 4) the student must earn at least a “C” by the end of the first semester

course completion to remain at that level of placement and receive credit in the preceding

course. Students must also meet all other graduation requirements.

Academic Progress and Attendance

Regular progress is the key to successful completion of the program. Upon entry

into the program, the student will produce a schedule with the instructor that best reflects

his/her anticipated days and hours of attendance. This will be made to help the student

accommodate conflicting schedules (e.g. work schedule, daycare). Please be courteous

and call us if you cannot make a scheduled time. While most work is not required to be

completed on-site, regular and punctual work is critical to success. Appointments and

phone conferences with the instructor are expected for continued enrollment.

On-site guidelines

While most of the work can be completed off-site there are times that being on-site will

be necessary. During those times, the students will adhere to the Carlisle County

Handbook.

Novel Star Requirements

The following is a guideline and list of requirements for the student using Novel Star

Curriculum. Additional coursework may be approved through the KY Virtual Schools or

other approved programs by the principal.

Login Information: Students can log in to any Internet connection. When at school the

student will Login using the Novel Star shortcut button on the desktop.

2. Click the sign in button

3. Institution –

4. User Name – first initial last name (e.g.: jsmith)

5. Password – To be decided by Head Teacher

6. Then press login

A. Before beginning submissions, each student will take a pretest/initial

assessment to see where the student is at in current knowledge of the

subject. While this grade does not affect credit average it can exempt

students from work on submissions. The pretest must be taken under

the instructor’s approval.

B. Students must obtain a 70% average or higher on each submission. If

you do not score a 70% on the first submission attempt, the teacher

will reset the submission for you to complete work again; however, in

order for a submission to be reset you must review your lesson with

the instructor. Upon successful completion of second attempt, the

student will only earn 70%. If the second attempt is less than 70%, the

student will accept the highest earned grade.

C. After completion of all submissions for a semester each student will

take a final exam. On the final exam, each student will be allowed to

use a study guide. The final exam will be 30% of your final grade, and

you will only be allowed to attempt it once. You must earn a 70%

overall to earn credit for each semester of work.

D. Each student needs to be sure to check the mail button upon each entry

and exit of Novel Stars. The teacher will use the network mail system

to communicate important information.

Infinite Campus - Virtual/Performance-Based Course Setup

Introduction A suggested setup of virtual/performance-based courses is being demonstrated to ensure

students are receiving the correct attendance credit on the SAAR report. Districts have

various setup options for these type courses that would be appropriate. The

documentation contained here provides the simplest and most basic setup.

Please contact Brad Blunt at [email protected] or (502) 564-5279 with any

questions on Infinite Campus you may have.

Questions on KDE attendance policies for virtual/performance based courses should be

directed to Tracy Browning at [email protected] or (502) 564-3846.

Score Groups & Rubrics (Grading & Standards>Score Groups & Rubrics)

Add a Passing grade mark to the school/district grading scale if this is absent. Give the

Pass score a credit coefficient of ‘1’ and mark the passing score checkbox as shown

above.

Course Setup

An example course setup is shown above; the exact setup is dependent on the teaching

method and instructional setting for the student(s) enrolled in the course.

State Code: The state code should be taken from the state valid course list:

http://www.education.ky.gov/KDE/Instructional+Resources/Curriculum+Documents+an

d+Resources/Kentucky+Valid+Course+List.htm

Attendance – Always unchecked for Virtual/Performance-Based courses

Performance

Virtual – Students working independently by way of online instruction outside the

classroom to complete the course requirements.

Performance – Students are working offsite who demonstrate proficiency on a pre-

established set of standards.

rning/Credit+Based+Transitions/Performance-Based+Credit.htm

Difficulty Level: Choose ‘Advanced Placement’ or ‘International Baccalaureate’ as

applicable. This is a district decision.

Create a Section

Create a section for the student(s).

For courses without attendance-taking: Mark the Highly Qualified dropdown as Not

Applicable. You can leave the teacher name as blank.

Attendance Taking Courses: Fill in the teacher name and Highly Qualified status.

Select the appropriate periods the class will meet:

Grading Tasks

Grading Task: Select the final grading task of the school year (e.g., Final Grade).

for the course (semester or year long) must be marked as Pass/Fail.

Score Group: Choose a score group that has a pass/fail grade.

Term Mask: Choose the appropriate term(s) in the school year (e.g., Term 4) based on

the course length (semester, year long, trimester, etc.).

Schedule

Course Schedule: Use the Walk-In Scheduler to enroll the student into a course

schedule for the year.

1. Locate the Performance/Virtual course under the Search tab.

2. Select the course section.

3. Under the course section go to Grading by Student.

4. Choose P or F based on their performance. (Individual course letter grades will

SAAR Report

The setup for performance/virtual-based students may be verified on the SAAR report.

ranges left blank, and the school selected from selection box. Run the report and verify

that the students are shown with attendance under the ‘Performance Based Proficient

Aggregate Attendance Days’ heading.

You can also run the SAAR report for a single student using an ad hoc filter. To do this

perform the following steps:

1. Create a single student ad hoc using the Select Editor under Ad Hoc

Reporting>Filter Designer. Select the Selection Editor and then Data Type of

Student.

2. Click Next.

3. Choose the student from the list and place it in the selection box on the left.

4. Provide a name to the ad hoc report and then save it.

Select the SAAR report under KY State Reporting>SAAR Report. Hit Ctrl + Spacebar to

view the student selection editor and 5 low attendance days selection tool.

In the ad hoc filter select the student(s) desired to review in SAAR. Run the report with

the appropriate school selected and only select ‘RV Virtual Performance Based

Attendance’.
