For over 40 years, Walters Man-agement has built lasting partner-ships with its valued clients based on a commitment to preserve, protect and enhance value through expert administration, maintenance and fiscal management.

Their management portfolio con-sists of master-planned communities, condominiums, planned residential developments, industrial parks, business centers, downtown high-rises and mixed-use developments throughout San Diego and Riverside counties proudly served by offices in San Diego, Carlsbad, Chula Vista and Murrieta.

Walters Management’s experi-ence in property management and community oversight provides them with a depth of expertise that helps avoid the time and expense of trial-and-error decisions. It is this wealth

of knowledge and commitment to excellence that serves as the founda-tion of their success, and continues to define them as they partner with their clients to fulfill their goals of creating successful and thriving communities.

Great leadership is the cornerstone of any successful company. At Wal-ters Management, President Joseph Farinelli is the dynamic leader that has allowed the company to become the force that it is today. Responsible

for overall company performance and operations, Farinelli has applied his personal experience to create better practices that make Walters Manage-ment stand out.

PAST CHAIR Carlton Lund The Lund Team

The State of the Chamber in 2015Th e 2015 State of the

City Luncheon, which took place on Friday, Aug. 21 was a resounding success. We had a sold-out audience of more than 400 who came to hear from Carlsbad Mayor Matt Hall about the proj-ects and other developments that are moving the City of Carlsbad forward. At the luncheon, I also presented a brief State of the Chamber Address. Here are the high-lights of what I said.

Th e chamber has accom-plished a lot this year! Let me start by pointing out that the Chamber operates on fi ve core competencies.

Everything that we do as a chamber aligns with one of the following goals:

• Building a strong local economy

• Promoting the community

• Providing networking and business development opportunities

• Representing business before government

• Political action

Th ink about the number 1,360. Th at is how many businesses, how many employers in the north county region are members

of the Carlsbad Chamber and derive value from their association with the Cham-ber. Next think about the many thousands of people these companies employ and how that drives our local economy.

Last year, the Chamber’s seven committees accounted for more than 100 meetings. We also provided numerous professional development opportunities, workshops and other crucial services

to our membership.Th e chamber promoted

the community with two Carlsbad Village Faires, with nearly 1,000 vendors and 100,000-plus attendees at each event.

Th e staff and ambassadors

attended dozens of new busi-ness ribbon cutting ceremo-nies, anniversary celebrations and grand openings.

We held an Eco Bus Field Trip to the San Diego Gas & Electric Center for Inno-vation to learn the latest in sustainable best practices.

Th is year the Chamber is launching a Candidate Acad-emy to educate people on what it takes to run for elected offi ce. Th e chamber is looking for those sincerely interested in running for public offi ce, be it school board, water board or higher offi ce.

Be sure to visit the Carls-bad chamber website to review the impressive list of panelists and presenters for this new program.

We held symposiums with the city on disaster preparedness with the Ready Carlsbad Business Alliance. Th e Chamber also held more than a dozen evening Sundowner receptions host-ing hundreds of members at a variety of businesses citywide.

In the area of business development the chamber, in concert with the small business administration, conducted more than 300 counseling sessions in our business success center with entrepreneurs who are looking to launch businesses right here in our region.

Our signature events include the annual awards dinner, our outstanding educational awards dinner, business expo, small business luncheon and the State of the City Luncheon.

Th e chamber’s program of work includes thousands of hours of supporting our member businesses are made much more impressive when we recognize that the cal-endar only has 222 working days, and that the chamber staff is made up of less than a dozen employees.

Th anks to all of you and your businesses for your continued support of our Chamber.

Do you envision yourself as a leader? Do you know someone who is a devoted member of the Chamber and would enjoy contribut-ing even more?

Th e Chamber’s Nominat-ing Committee is seeking nominations for its Board of Directors vacancies for 2016. If you are interested in a director position, or if you want to nominate someone,

please contact the Chamber by Sept. 25.

Th e board represents all segments of the local business community, including hote-liers, family-owned compa-nies, corporations, educational institutions, hospitals and civic agencies.

For more information, contact Toni Padron, execu-tive vice president/COO at the Chamber at 760-931-8400.

Tri-City Hospital Founda-tion’s annual black tie ball will return for its 35th anniversary paying homage to its original name – Baile de Esperanza.

Th e elegant aff air will take place on Sat., Nov. 7 at the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort, Golf Club & Spa. All pro-ceeds raised will benefi t the expansion and renovation of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and the Labor and Delivery Department at Tri-City Medical Center.

“’Esperanza’ means ‘hope,’ and that’s the perfect sentiment for this year’s event,” said Glen Newhart, president of Tri-City Hospital Foundation. Since the 2014 gala, the Foundation has focused heavily on fundrais-ing for the Tri-City Medical Center NICU and updating and growing its Women and Infant Services area. Expanding the NICU, including the addi-tion of private rooms, will allow hundreds of critically ill infants to receive care close to home

while also granting greater pri-vacy and comfort for mother and baby, as well as increased effi ciency for physicians and nurses. Th e fully upgraded services are anticipated to be available during the summer of 2016.

While enjoying an evening of giving back at the Baile, attendees will be inspired with a heartwarming presentation starring the many success stories of Tri-City Medical Center. Th e event will also fea-ture a traditional fi let and lob-ster menu, live entertainment, a high-end auction and of course, a full evening of dancing.

Registration for regular attendance and sponsorships is now open at TriCityHos-pitalFoundation.org, starting at $350 per person.

For more details on Baile de Esperanza and the Foun-dation’s work in the North County community, visit TriCityHospitalFoundation.org or call 760-940-3370.

Council approves ‘85/15’ planTh e Carlsbad City Council

voted unanimously to approve “Th e Agua Hedionda South Shore Specifi c Plan,” which will guide the development of 203 acres of land bounded by Interstate Highway 5, Cannon Road and the Agua Hedionda Lagoon.

Th e vote came at the end of a meeting on Aug. 25 which included more than 130 speakers addressing the council on the proposed plan. Th e approval allows Caruso A liated to build a shopping center that will be anchored by a Nordstrom on about 27 acres of land. It sets aside the rest of the land — about 177 acres — as open space and the continu-ation of strawberry farming and agriculture.

“We are not always going to agree, but as long as we focus on the facts, we can come to good decisions that benefi t Carlsbad,” said Mayor Matt Hall. “Th is plan has been developed in collaboration with the community, and it goes above and beyond what is required, by ensuring the future of the strawberry fi elds and providing public access to open space in perpetuity. Th at has tremendous value and will enhance our community for years to come.”

Th e issue came before the council as a result of an initia-tive drive initiated by Caruso Affi liated, which collected more than 20,000 signatures from residents for the project — more than double the 9,784 signatures (or 15 percent of Carlsbad’s registered voters)

that was required to bring the issue before the council.

The council had three options: approving the proj-ect, putting it up for a vote or requesting more information.

Before the council action, Carlsbad Chamber of Com-merce President and CEO Ted Owen, at the direction of the Board of Directors, was one of many who urged the

council to approve the project outright, noting that delaying the project would put off the benefi ts of increased jobs, sales taxes and property taxes that the project will provide.

Owen also noted that if the project should somehow fall through, there would be no guarantee that another appli-cant would make the same fi nancial commitment to the

city or have the same concern for open space.

“Th is project is as close to the ideal project for what this land has been designated for,” Owen said. “Nothing that we have seen indicates that Caruso Affi liated has anything but the intention to give the city a quality project that meets and exceeds the expectations of the city’s residents and their desire for projects that continue to make Carlsbad a great place to live, work and play.”

Th e plan will now proceed to the California Coastal Commission for consider-ation. Rick Caruso, founder and CEO of Caruso Affi li-ated, the plan’s sponsor, said he hopes to complete the project as early as 2018.

Th e trails, agriculture and other open space areas will be developed before the other project elements, he said.

Artists renderings give a glimpse of what the future has in store for the commercial portion of the ‘85/15’ Plan, including what the Carlsbad Strawberry Company might look like in a new location within the area.

Leave home behind, yet find it waiting right here.

You might already know me as the owner of Coolest Shoes in California, a casual-comfort boutique for men, women and children. So, why am I writ-ing a monthly column on the Village?

I was a Carlsbad Village Association Board Member because I wanted to be more involved in my town. I wanted to help aff ect change in the Village to better serve my cus-tomers. I wanted to see it con-tinue to thrive and grow and truly become the preeminent destination in North County.

Recently the board saw a need to hire a Program Man-ager to manage and expand the village events, promote the village, and ultimately support the hundreds of Vil-lage merchants we all love. Who better to enrich the vil-lage than a merchant with a marketing background? And as a solopreneur who, with the guidance of the Carls-bad Chamber of Commerce, managed to grow her busi-ness from a single product sold at the Carlsbad Village Faire to having a brick-and-mortar store with three employees, I knew the pro-cess and could help new vil-lage merchants.

With the help of tremen-dous employees, sharing my time this summer between the CVA offi ce and my store, which are both conveniently located on State Street, has been pretty seamless. In the last 90 days the Carls-bad Village Association has been very busy with its three summer events and its weekly

Farmers’ Market. Th is summer’s Flicks at the

Fountain movie series has been a tremendous success. Carls-bad residents of all ages have enjoyed movies outdoors while enjoying pizza and picnic din-ners right in their beach chairs. An average of 200 people attended each screening.

“Flicks at the Fountain is such a great event,” said spon-sor Zac Markham, owner of Humble Olive Oils. “It has a very special feel to it and helps make the Village unique; we were proud to be a sponsor.”

With just a few more Friday nights left in this summer’s Friday Night Live “busker” style music series, we’re look-ing forward to having bands like Th e Bad Carls, Th e Moon-light Ramblers and others play on State Street. Friday Night Live runs every Friday night through September 25th from 7pm to 9pm.

Th e 17th Annual Art in the Village on Aug. 9 was a huge success. With 100 local and regional artists and over 5,000 attendees, State Street and Grand Avenue played host to an intimate, open-air art show complete with live musicians to set the mood.

Th e State Street Certifi ed Organic Farmers’ Market con-tinues to improve with age! With over 50 vendors off er-ing everything from locally-grown strawberries to spe-cialty breads and pasta, make Wednesday’s in the Village a healthy routine!

As Program Manager, I will continue with existing events but plan to add others so that the Village becomes “front of mind” when you think of shopping, dining and entertainment.

Would a “Taste of Carls-bad” be of interest? Would decorated retail store windows and festive lights during the holidays draw you to the vil-lage? How can we help you enjoy the Village more? Please contact me at [email protected] with any questions or ideas.

Business tools planned for library updates If you are a small-business

owner and haven’t taken advan-tage of what our libraries have to offer, you may want to keep an eye on the upcoming remodels of the Georgina Cole Library on Carlsbad Village Drive and the Carlsbad City Library on Dove Lane.

Both libraries will feature a “living room” feel where users can sit and work in a more com-fortable setting, with better access to power outlets and enhanced Wi-Fi capabilities. A big part of the redesigns include improved spaces for collaboration, and the Dove Lane library will add rooms equipped with new meeting tech-nology, making them an ideal set-ting to prepare for conferences, conduct group research or meet with clients.

The Dove Lane library will also feature an expanded café with an appealing menu of food and drink choices, perfect for informal meet-ings and networking.

The libraries have always been a go-to place for valuable infor-mation that will help you make business decisions. All you need is a Carlsbad library card to access such premium databases as Reference USA, which con-tains a wealth of information on businesses and residents that can help you grow your busi-ness; Weiss Financial Ratings, which rates thousands of banks, insurance companies, stocks and mutual funds; and Lynda.com, a video library of top-quality train-ing and informational courses taught by industry experts. The

Learning Express Library offers an extensive battery of online tests, books and courses for busi-ness professionals.

The city’s libraries also offer a variety of computer classes including how to research finan-cial and stock information, saving images and content to the cloud, and using Microsoft Office applications.

For the remodel, the Cole and Dove libraries will need to tem-porarily close for several months during construction. Only one library will be closed at a time. Cole Library be closed from Sept. 1, 2015, through early 2016. Work on the Dove Library will take place in early 2016 through mid-2016 and will begin after the Georgina Cole Library construc-tion is complete.

Construction at the Dove Library is being phased to allow sections of the facility to remain open during some periods of

work. The Carlsbad City Library Learning Center, at 3368 Eureka Place across from Holiday Park, will continue to provide library services while the other libraries are closed. For more informa-tion about the project, visit the website at www.carlsbadca.gov/libraryredesigns.

Professional Development Opportunities

In addition to modernizing the library buildings, the city is increasing its programming geared toward local profession-als. The library already conducts an evening workshop series, “Your Library Means Business,” every year from January through April. These programs teach skills to help new and small businesses and include such topics as develop-ing business and marketing plans, finding financing and other sub-jects that will help you grow your

business. Keep tabs on the library’s Web page for details on the 2016 program.

The city is offering a new pro-gram this fall for small businesses called, “Let’s Do Lunch,” a work-shop series designed to combine instruction and networking. The series will kick off on Sept. 23 with Business Finances: Tradi-tional to Nontraditional Fund-ing Options, featuring Joseph Molina, a specialist in advising small businesses. Solutions for Change gala to benefit homeless veterans

Solutions for Change will hold its annual fundraising gala, “An Evening to Remember…with our American Heroes,” on Saturday, Sept. 19 from 5-11 p.m. at the Jet Source airplane hangar at the Carlsbad Airport, which will be stylishly transformed to welcome more than 800 guests to the high-profile affair.

This year’s event will honor the men and women who have served in our armed forces, while raising support for programs and services that help solve family homelessness.

Event guest speakers are Taya Kyle and Clint Bruce. Kyle is a veteran family activist and widow of U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle (the subject of the 2014 Academy Award-winning film, “American Sniper”) and author of “Ameri-can Wife: A Memoir of Love, War, Faith, and Renewal.”

Presenting along with Kyle is Bruce, a former Navy SEAL and pro football player, who is also nationally recognized speaker and author on veteran issues and leadership.

The evening will feature gourmet cuisine and will also showcase live music, exciting live and silent auctions, entertainment and special pre-sentations honoring the men and women who have served in our nation’s military.

“This year’s event is our boldest initiative yet, kicking off a 1,000 day campaign to raise awareness and support for what many are calling the nation’s most innovative solution to family homelessness,” said Chris Megison, president and CEO of Solutions for Change.

Tickets are $375, with sponsorship packages starting at $3,000.

More than 97 percent of consumers research local busi-nesses online. With searches from smart phones and mobile devices surging to unprec-edented levels, can potential customers fi nd your business on Google’s map?

A survey we recently con-ducted of Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce members found that one out of every four busi-nesses could not be found on Google maps. Another 25 percent have a “placeholder” listing. Th at means their busi-ness has an online presence, but it hasn’t been verifi ed or claimed by the owner. Th ese listing could be inaccurate or refl ect poorly on the company in question.

Slightly less than half of all businesses in the survey have a verified/claimed listing, meaning the business owner has control over the way the business appears, and has added photos, updated hours of operation, and ensured the that the businesses name, address and phone number appear correctly to potential customers.

We have found that Name/Address/Phone — what we call ‘NAP’ — consistency is one of the most important factors in infl uencing local search results rankings. Search engines treat every site where your NAP info is posted as a citation, and having consistent contact info is key.

In addition to grading the search listings and visibility, we also examined how many businesses had online reviews from customers in Google’s database, and the average strength of those reviews (on Google’s scale from 1-star to 5-star ratings).

Only about 35 percent of businesses in the survey had Google reviews. Of those with reviews, only one-quarter had Google’s minimum number of reviews (fi ve) to show an average review rating in the search results.

Online reviews are crucial to converting prospects into customers. About 25 percent of the reviews we found were left on sites that were unveri-fi ed by the business owner. Th at’s troubling, because cus-tomers are making a judgment on your company, based on a site you have no control over.

Just 10 percent of busi-nesses in the survey had a Google rating that was 4 stars or higher.

Although the average rating of local businesses may appear gloomy, improving your busi-ness’s online image is fairly straightforward.

Th e way Google displays local search listings is actu-ally pretty simple. First, make sure your business listing is verifi ed. Second, update the listing to ensure it’s accurate with respect to your compa-ny’s name, address and phone number.

Th ird, optimize your listing with quality photos, updated business hours and coupons, if applicable. Lastly, invite cus-tomers to leave reviews online. If you do these four things, you’ll be ahead of 90 percent of your competition.

What impression is your company making on Google maps?

Join Higher Power SEO and the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce at the 2015 Business Expo Sept. 22, to get more Carlsbad businesses on the map. We will be assisting busi-nesses claim their Google listings to ensure that their customers can fi nd them.

When an emergency strikes, you know you need medical care fast. But what if you’re not sure if it’s a true emergency? How can you tell if what you or a loved one is experiencing should have you rushing to the ER?

While the answer is not always simple, knowing the diff erence between urgent care and emergency care and where to seek treatment could save your life in an emergency.

TIME FOR THE ERAccording to the Cen-

ters for Disease Control and Prevention, emergency rooms handle more than 136 mil-lion visits annually, including more than 40 million injury-related visits.

While emergency depart-ments were designed to pro-vide fast, life-or-limb-saving care, many people use the ER as a place to receive urgent care without realizing it.

Urgent care centers are walk-in, outpatient clinics found throughout San Diego County that primarily treat injuries or illnesses requiring immediate care but are not serious enough to require an emergency room visit.

Still, if you’re ever in doubt, it’s better to be safe and go to the closest ER.

Sometimes driving your-self or a loved one to the emergency room won’t get you the medical care needed fast enough. Many people are confused about when to call 911 but it’s better to be safe than sorry. If you are in doubt,

call 911. Do not drive if you are having severe chest pain or severe bleeding, if you feel like you might faint or if your vision is impaired.

For certain medical emer-gencies, such as a heart attack or stroke, taking an ambulance is safer because paramedics can deliver life-saving care on the way to the hospital.

ese are some of the conditions that are consid-ered medical emergencies:

• Persistent chest pains, es-pecially if it radiates to your arm or jaw, or is accompa-nied by sweating, vomiting or shortness of breath.

• Severe pain, particularly in the abdomen or starting halfway down the back.

• Broken bones or dislocated joints

• Loss of balance or fainting

• Diffi culty speaking, altered mental status or confusion

• Weakness or paralysis

• Severe heart palpitations

• Falls with injury or while tak-ing blood thinning medica-tions

• Newborn baby with a fever

• Intestinal bleeding

• Head, face and eye injuries

• Severe fl u or cold symptoms

• High fevers or fevers with rash

• Bleeding that won’t stop or a large open wound

• Serious burns

You may also be sent to the ER by your doctor if you have an underlying condition, such as hypertension or diabetes, which could complicate your diagnosis and require extra care.

URGENT CARE IS NOT EMERGENCY CARE

Urgent care departments are same-day clinics that can handle a variety of conditions that need to be treated right away but are not emergen-cies. As such the wait time is shorter and less costly than a visit to the emergency room.

Some symptoms that can be treated at urgent care include:• Fever without rash

• Minor trauma such as a common sprain

• Painful urination

• Persistent diarrhea

• Severe sore throat

• Vomiting

• Broken bones of the wrist, hand, ankle or foot that have no obvious need to reset and have not broken the skin.

While urgent care clinics are always available, your pri-mary care physician will have a better picture of your over-all health for a more accurate diagnosis.

BE PREPARED FOR MEDICAL CARE

Whether you’re going to urgent care, the ER or your primary care physicians’ office, it’s good to keep a list of all the medications you take with you including dos-ages and any over-the-coun-ter medications and vitamins. Many medications, and even vitamins, can interact with the treatment options your physician plans to use.

Scripps off ers four emer-gency room locations, three urgent care offi ces and primary care physicians throughout the county. If you or a loved one is experiencing symptoms of a stroke or heart attack, call 9-1-1.

”To Your Health” is brought to you by the physicians and sta of Scripps. For more information or to make an appointment, please visit www.scripps.org/CBJ or call (858) 348-4210.

CSUSM’s new hospitality program can launch tourism careers

With the help of the local tourism industry, including several Carlsbad-based resorts, Cal State University San Marcos has launched a new program that will help those currently employed in the hospitality industry and those looking for a job in this fi eld to earn a professional certifi cate from the Busi-ness of Hospitality.

Th e program, which starts this fall, is comprised of seven courses that provide training in both customer-facing and managerial aspects of the hospitality business, giving participants a better understanding of the indus-try from a “big picture” perspective that goes beyond specifi c roles or job descriptions.

Classes are being hosted on-site at the Cape Rey Resort, Sheraton Resort Carlsbad, and the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa.

Th e leisure and hospitality industry jobs are in high demand in San Diego County. From April to May this year, it added 4,900 new jobs in the county, the majority of them in accommodations and food services. CSUSM’s Profes-sional Certifi cate in the Business of Hospitality is approved for the Work-force Investment and Opportunity Act (WIAO), making it an excellent option for those looking to increase their mar-ketability, transition to a new fi eld, or further a career in hospitality.

To learn more about the hospitality program, call 760-750-4004 or visit www.csusm.edu/el/certificatepro-grams/hospitality/index.html.

A growing body of research has found that along with better health, high school sports plays a positive role in youth develop-ment including improved academic skills, higher self esteem, and fewer behavioral problems. We are proud of our amazing athletes in Carls-bad. Our students continue to build their character, confi dence, and con-nections through our extensive and varied athletic programs.

Regionally, CUSD remains a powerhouse in competitive sports. Last year Carlsbad High School earned League Champion titles in: Boys Cross Country; Girls Golf; Girls Soccer; Boys Soccer; Girls Water Polo; Boys Golf; Girls and Boys Swim and Dive; Girls and Boys Track and Field; and Boys Volleyball.

Th e Lancers also went on to win CIF Championships in Boys Water Polo, Girls Basketball, and Boys Golf, and were runners up in Girls Cross Country, Girls Soccer, Softball, Girls Lacrosse, and Boys Volleyball.

At our newest high school, Sage Creek, the Girls Volleyball team won the school’s fi rst ever San Diego CIF Championship.

CHS Students Shelby Lee and Nathan Williams were named Scholar Athletes of the Year 2014-2015. Also, fi ve students were rec-ognized as Avocado West Players of the Year: Summer Mason, Girls Soccer; Ryan Brent, Boys Soccer; Taylor Onstott, Girls Water Polo;

Kylie McCarthy, Girls Track and Field; and Cullen Plousha, Boys Golf. Alana Snow was CIF Cham-pion for High Jump, Girls Track.

Over at SCHS, Beau Prince earned All-League Team in Avo-cado West for Boys Cross Country and fi nished 14th overall in Boys

Track and Field in the 3200m at CIF SDS Finals; Taylor Moseley fi nished 24th overall in Girls Track and Field in the 1600m at CIF SDS Finals, and Carlos Navarro took 3rd place in the Avocado West league championship for Boys Tennis and was voted onto

the All-League 2nd team.Jeff Riccitelli, CHS Boys Soccer

coach, was honored with a signifi -cant statewide award -- California State Coach of the Year for Boys Soccer. And Jason Puterbaugh, Boys Golf coach, was named CIF Coach of the Year.

Carlsbad High School’s 2012 graduate Thomas Eshelman signed with the Houston Astros after being selected in the second round in the MLB draft. CHS’s Trevor Rosenberg is playing for the Washington Nationals Scout Team, and Nathan Walker is playing on the Padres Scout Team. Alumni Softball Player Erika Piancastelli is playing for Italy, and Alana Snow is playing for the Great Britain National Softball team — and each is doing a stellar job.

We are inspired by our athletes. Th eir discipline in training, team-work, leading, and learning to lose with dignity provide lifelong skills. Congratulations to our students, their passionate coaches, and their supportive.

Th e Chamber has put together a program whose panelists include a who’s-who of local campaign experi-ence and political know-how from across the aisle, including current and former elected offi cials, leaders from both major political par-ties, campaign consultants and other strategists. Th e idea is for participants to graduate from the Academy with the tools they need to hit the ground running.

“Th ose who wish to run for offi ce need to know what it really takes to do that success-fully,” said Toni Padron, the Chamber’s chief operating offi cer and executive vice president. “We want them to be prepared.”

Francine Busby, chairwoman of the San Diego County Democratic Party and one of the many panelists who will participate in the Candidate Academy, said she believes people who are running for elected offi ce should undergo some type of training. She added that to her knowledge, while the individual parties have campaign training for their can-didates, there is no other similar campaign training program locally.

“Without training, most people go in with unrealistic expectations,” Busby said. “Th ey see candidates giving campaign speeches and

putting up signs and that’s all they know,” she said. “Th ere’s much more to it

than that.”Tony Kvaric, chairman of

Th e Republican Party of San Diego County, who will also be a panelist at the Candidate Academy, said campaign hopefuls can benefi t from partici-pating by getting a taste

of what it takes to run for offi ce and be better informed

before “taking the plunge.”For example, during his session,

Kvaric will explain how a political party works, what they will do and won’t do for a candidate and how candidates can earn the endorse-ment of his organization.

Suzette Lovely, Superintendent of the Carlsbad Unifi ed School District

and an ex-offi cio member of the Chamber’s board of directors, said she was very impressed by the variety of presenters that the Candidate Academy will present, and thinks the Chamber is doing the right thing by identifying and help-ing prepare future leaders.

“Th e future of our democracy is dependent on eff ective governance, and any eff ort such as this that can coach, educate and mentor future leaders through the process of running for offi ce should be applauded.”

Padron added the Candidate Academy fi ts well into all of the fi ve “Core Competencies” that the Chamber’s off erings should fall within: building a strong local economy, promoting the community, providing networking and profes-sional development opportunities; representing business before government and political action.

“As a business organization, we want to know who in our community is going to carry on the belief that a strong local economy ben-efi ts all that live, work and play in our com-munities,” Padron said. “Strong communities are made up of strong leadership. We hope to impact that through the Candidate Academy.”

Walters Management was founded on a commitment to creating a better quality of life for Californians living in local communities.

With beginnings working in apartment and commercial portfolios, Farinelli has spent decades building expertise that has contributed to Walters’ ability to continuously exceed expectations. Responsible for the company’s growth, he has persistently focused on his own professional development. Over the years, he has spent time on the Carlsbad Cham-ber of Commerce, served on the Board of Directors of the California Association of Community Managers and obtained numerous industry accreditations.

By pursuing these various valued industry certifi ca-tions, Farinelli has empow-ered himself and Walters Management with resources

and knowledge to provide the best services possible to their customer base.

When Farinelli isn’t at the offi ce helping Walters become an industry leader, he is Joe, the Carlsbad resident.

He made the move from East County to Carlsbad in 1997 and hasn’t looked back. Raising his fi ve children in the area, Farinelli has enjoyed participating in sports leagues, cheering on La Costa Canyon High, and dining on local cui-sine. When asked about his favorite, he couldn’t just choose one, “If I want Mexican food its Casa de Bandini or Fidel’s, a good steak and its West Steak-house or Tommy V’s and Ital-ian it’s probably Vigilucci’s. It’s hard to have one favorite with so many great choices”.

Due to his community management expertise, he has been able to pair his profes-sional and personal life as a Carlsbad community member

“We’ve watched the devel-opment of south Carlsbad residential neighborhoods and commercial centers for the

last 18 years,” he said. “We are fortunate enough to manage many of the communities in Carlsbad and feel like we have contributed greatly to improv-ing the quality of life for many of the homeowners living in the communities we manage.”

Not only do the positive changes we see in San Diego communities and Walters’ steady growth substantiate the value of Farinelli’s leadership eff orts, he has continuously been recognized by industry leading organizations. With unwavering dedication to Walters Management’s suc-cess, Joseph Farinelli has used his past experience, pursuit of industry education, and lead-ership skills to play a key role in making Walters Manage-ment a force to be reckoned with in the community man-agement industry.

Chamber of Commerce, and the city of Carlsbad to pro-mote business emergency preparedness.

It also provides tools that allow for business continu-ity and trains businesses and their employees to respond to emergencies and provide meaningful contributions to community recovery eff orts after disasters.

In May 2014, the Ready Carlsbad Business Alliance was tested after the Poinsettia Fire tore through the city.

With city assistance, the Alliance handed more than $20,000 to 170 residents who had suff ered fi re, smoke, ash damage and related health eff ects.

Th e eff orts did not dupli-cate services or aid that was provided by relief agencies, insurance providers and other sources.

Because the fi re did not meet the requirements to be designated a federal disas-ter, it was up to local agen-cies to provide assistance to those who were displaced from their homes. Th e Alli-ance was able to identify

and quickly address unmet needs — such as purchas-ing air purifi ers for families whose homes were aff ected by smoke damage and giving them gift cards that helped them to purchase their most immediate needs.

Th e 2015 Citizens Awards encompass eight categories that honor corporate citizen-ship best practices. Th e Best Disaster Response & Com-munity Resilience category is for companies that go above and beyond to create suc-cessful resilience initiatives. Th ese companies have proven that the business sector has the ability and desire to create impact. Th e winner for this category will be selected by a committee of corporate peers and experts in the fi eld.

“We’re proud that the U.S. Chamber Foundation named Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce as a fi nalist for the 2015 Best Disaster Response & Community Resilience award,” said Ted Owen, President and CEO of the Carlsbad Chamber. “Th e Citizens award for this category recognizes a single strategic initiative focused on improving disaster respond and community resilience measures. We’re thrilled to be recognized as a business that understands and sus-tains its linkages with the community.”

Th e winner of the award will be announced during a ceremony that will be held Tuesday, Oct. 6 in Washing-ton, D.C.

WHAT’S

Through page 14

It’s ‘All About that Space’ at the Business ExpoI’m not much of a singer,

but recently you might have heard me belting out for anyone who listens: “It’s all about that space, ‘bout that space - Business Expo!”

Th at’s because I’m very excited about the return of one of our signature events, the Business Expo, which will take place from 2-6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 22 at LEGO-LAND California Resort.

Of all of the events that we organize at the Carlsbad Cham-ber of Commerce, the Business Expo is one of my favorites.

Th at’s because it allows our members to interact with the public, allowing them to see what we here at the Chamber already know — that they have some really cool products and services.

And we’ve got so much lined up for this year — I don’t even know where to start. So I’ll just get to it:

• Have you ever wanted to stay at the LEGOLAND California Resort hotel? We’ll, if you’re lucky, you might just get the chance. As our site sponsor — the Expo

will take place at the LEGO-LAND parking lot on a day the theme park is closed to the public — attendees will have an opportunity to enter a drawing to win a one-night stay at the hotel and four two-day park hopper tickets!

• Are you a business owner? If so, have you registered your Google My Business page yet? If not, join us at the Expo and help us “Put Carlsbad on the Map.” (See the article on Page 6) for details.

• Be a little more green! E-World Recyclers will be on hand to help you recycle your unwanted products. Make sure to bring all electronics-household, business and industrial-computers,

monitors, microwaves, coff ee makers etc. (No bat-teries or bulbs).

Th at’s not including all of the Chamber members who will be exhibiting.

To see who has confi rmed so far, see our ad on Page 10.

I get great joy in watching the interactions that take place at the annual expo between the members of the public and the exhibitors.

Th at’s why exhibitors often use the Business Expo as an opportunity to showcase their new services and products.

It’s a great place for people to come in and visit with a company.

It allows them to interact one-on-one with representa-tives from the company.

While some people might not feel comfortable pick-ing up the phone and asking them about their service, the Business Expo allows them to do just that.

Th ey can ask questions and fi nd out about a product without feeling that they’re setting themselves up for a hard sell. While you might be able to do some fact fi nd-ing easily on-line these days, a website can’t compete with that true personal experience and the immediacy of one-on-one interactions.

Admission to the 2015 Business Expo is free, but to receive free event parking, you must visit www.carlsbad.org and register.

While LEGOLAND California will be closed, the theme park’s restaurants will still be open, and attendees can get discounts for the day of the event.

Also, the Sea Life Aquar-ium will be open (requires paid admission).

Forge lasting bonds at the next SundownerJoin the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce at the Sep-tember Sundowner, which will be held at the office of Hanscom Alexeev McDaniel LLP, a new law firm cre-ated by three Chamber members who recently decided to combine their practices.

The firm — headquartered out of 2141 Palomar Airport Road — brings together the talents of Eric Hanscom, Ryan Alexeev and Ian McDaniel. All three operated separate firms at the same address before officially coming together in July.

“Synergistically, we’re much stronger as a group than we are individually,” Hanscom said. “Having everybody in the same office has been very beneficial... It is a lot more conve-nient and it certainly gives clients the impression that we are a firm that can handle a very wide range of cases.”

Hanscom Alexeev & McDan-iel LLP provides services in Cor-porations; Securities; Mergers & Acquisitions; Formations; General Counsel Business Law; Litigation; Intellectual Property; Estate Plan-ning; Trust Administration; and Immigration.

“Our goal is to provide high quality, legal services that are indi-vidually tailored to clients’ needs,”

said Alexeev. “We pride ourselves on listening to our clients, providing them the personal attention they deserve, keep-ing them updated as their cases progress and helping them every step of the way.”

The partners originally came together through their par-ticipation in the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce, noted

Bev Jorgensen, the Chamber’s Vice President of Corporate & Member Relations.

“Their success story goes a long way toward illustrating how creating lasting

relationships during Chamber events — such as Sundowners — can lead to life-changing events,” Jorgensen said. “Everything we do at the Chamber is built around forging strong bonds between members.”

This event is open to chamber members only. If you are a future Chamber member and would like to attend, contact the Chamber at 760-931-8400.

Preregister for the event online at www.carlsbad.org by Sept. 15 for $10 admission ($5 off ).

On the day of the event, cost of admission is $15 cash only at the door.
