If you’ve driven through downtown Logansport lately, you’ve probably seen the people standing at the corner of Fourth and Broadway. United Way of Cass County has recently added “Live United” shirts to several of them, marking the total amount they’ve raised to date toward their $575,000 campaign goal. I serve on the United Way Board of Directors and am a member of the Community Investment Committee, which determines how the money pledged by campaign givers should be allocated to

the member agencies. The agencies submit detailed applications for funding and will make presentations to the committee in early November. It’s really an interesting process. In recent weeks, I’ve heard a couple of people comment that the United Way is an organization whose help you hope you’ll never need, but if you do, you want them to be there. I didn’t quite understand that statement until yesterday, when I received an e-mail from Cass County American Red Cross director Rocky Buffum. “Shortly after 2 p.m., the American Red Cross was dispatched to the

intersection of 20th and Broadway in Logansport for a report of a residential

fi re. Upon arrival local volunteers provided canteen services to fi refi ghters

battling the fi re and the Red Cross is currently assisting a family of three

displaced by the incident. This response is made possible by contributions

to your United Way Campaign currently underway. We thank the community

for their generous support which enables us to be there for our friends and

neighbors in time of need.”

The money that donors give to the United Way of Cass County is reinvested directly into programming for the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army, Peak Community Services, Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts of Northern Indiana-Michiana, Mental Health Association, Se-nior Center/Cass Transit, Cass County Family YMCA and Food Finders. Sev-eral of those organizations offer programming you may take advantage of frequently, but the dollars you give to the United Way of Cass County also make it possible for these agencies to provide assistance to your friends, neighbors and maybe even your family in times of need. As we approach the end of the year, remember that many of our local organizations rely heavily on donations. Charitable givers aren’t just people with a lot of money in their checking accounts. They’re people like you and me, making an investment in our community. As the holidays approach, please consider making a gift to our community — whether it’s putting some change in a Red Kettle, casting a vote for your favorite local “star,” writing a check or volunteering your time. And don’t forget to vote on November 8 — that’s a contribution that won’t cost you a dime!

A community investment

Development of Huston Park became a step closer to reality with the announcement of a $100,000 pledge from the Mike Anderson Auto Group on Oct. 13. The Logansport Parks and Recreation Founda-tion now has slightly over $1 million lined up for the fi rst phase of development with this most recent commitment. The Mike Anderson pledge will allow the park to include a large multipurpose meadow that will provide space for football and soccer teams to practice, festivals, casual recreation, along with the pos-sibility of programming music and entertainment events using a portable stage.The meadow will be circular in design and include landscaping borders to create a centerpiece effect for the fi rst phase of the park. It will be surrounded by a pedestrian/biking trail that will also wind thru other areas of the 80 acre park.

Revised plans call for a playground and picnic area to be adjacent to the western edge of the circular meadow. The meadow area will be named the “Mike Anderson

Community Complex” at Huston Park. In making the gift announcement, Mike Anderson and Bill Thompson, owners of Mike Anderson Auto Group, stated, “We felt like this was an excellent way to say thank you to the Cass County community for the support they have given our dealerships over the past thirty(30) years. As we position our dealerships for the future, we wanted to give something back to the community in appreciation of our customers. We believe Huston Park will be a key component of our community’s quality of life for years to come and we wanted to be a part of this initial development phase. We look

forward to seeing the Mike Anderson Community Complex bustling with all sorts of activities over the next several years.”

Depot NIPSCO says market projections indicate that this winter, natural gas prices will remain among the lowest in more than 10 years. Assuming normal winter temperatures, NIPSCO customers are expected to experience a decrease of 7.7 percent in their overall home heating bills this upcoming heating season compared to last winter. Over the course of the fi ve-month winter heating season – Nov. 1 to March 31 – NIPSCO’s average residential customer using a total of 623 therms could expect to pay approximately $461. This compares to $499 for a customer us-ing the same amount of gas during last winter. “As household budgets remain strapped, we are glad to share favorable news about expect-ed natural gas prices this winter,” said NIPSCO CEO Jimmy Staton. “Market prices for natural gas have stabilized because of increased do-

mestic production, onshore shale gas discover-ies, and increased storage and transportation capabilities. This stable market outlook will provide a much-needed benefi t to homes and businesses across northern Indiana.” Actual bills may vary by customer depend-ing on the home’s age and size, number in the household, number and age of gas appliances, thermostat settings and insulation levels. While NIPSCO cannot control market condi-tions affecting the price of natural gas, the util-ity does negotiate the best possible price for the natural gas it purchases for its customers. “Although winter bills are expected to be lower, we recognize the unique challenges that many of our customers are facing – espe-cially seniors, the disabled and those on fi xed incomes,” added Staton. “It’s important that any customer, regardless of their situation,

contact us to determine what options might be available to offer help.”

Home Energy Assistance enrollment starts Nov. 1Despite expected cuts in federal funding for Low Income Home Energy Assistance (LIHEAP) across the country, several options are available to offer much needed winter utility bill assistance for qualifi ed NIP-SCO households that are experiencing fi nancial chal-lenges. LIHEAP support is available to households falling within 150 percent of federal poverty guide-lines, and is fully funded by a federal block grant of-fered through the U.S. Department of Health and Hu-man Services (HHS). General enrollment begins Nov. 1, and funds are administered by the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority (IHCDA) and spread across northern Indiana through Community Action Agencies with outreach offi ces in each county. Representatives from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Fed-eral Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), in conjunction with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, will host a Flood risk Infor-mation Open House on Wednesday, October 26 from 4-7 p.m. The Open House will take place at the Riverside Park McHale Complex Pavilion, 1212 Riverside Drive, Logansport, IN 46947. The Open House will provide Cass County residents with an opportunity to review a recently com-pleted preliminary Flood Insurance Study (FIS) and its accompanying preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs). The FIS and the FIRMs provide base fl ood information, delineate areas subject to signifi cant fl ood hazards within the county, and offer information public offi cials may use when permitting development in the fl oodplain. The Open House will be staffed with representatives from various local, state and federal agencies who will provide the most current information about fl ood risk, fl ood insurance, fl oodplain development regulations, and the process for fl oodplain mapping within Cass County. The newly prepared preliminary fl oodplain maps will be on display. Once the maps become effective, these maps will be used by fl oodplain permit offi cials, builders and developers, lenders, realtors, insurance agents and the general public to determine fl ood risk, develop mitiga-tion measures, and encourage wise and responsible risk management decision-making. Property owners, realtors, lenders and insurance agents are urged to attend and take advantage of this opportunity to learn more about fl ood risk and hazard mitigation within their community. Governor Becky Skillman is asking Hoosiers to write holiday cards to our coun-try’s servicemen and women. “Hoosier Cheer For Our Heroes” provides an opportunity for Hoosiers to send their thoughts and prayers to U.S. troops spending the season away from their homes and loved ones. “Though troop levels are not where they have been in recent years, we still have thousands of U.S. servicemen and women serving overseas this year. They should know Hoosiers appreciate the heroic work they are doing over the holiday season and throughout the year,” said Lt. Gov. Skillman. “A card or letter is a meaningful way Hoo-siers can say thanks and bring cheer to our heroes.” Shipping costs will be defrayed with gen-erous support from the Indiana Statewide Association of Rural Electric Cooperatives, serving 39 electric cooperatives in 89 counties, and enGreet, an Indianapolis-based online greeting card company. enGreet will allow anyone to use their website, www.engreet.com, to personalize and send a card as part of Hoosier Cheer. Logansport Memorial Hospital welcomes new physician Rose Mae Tantoco, MD has joined the Logansport Memorial Physician Network Internal Medicine practice with Dr. David Morrical, Dr. Cherrie Bennett and Dr. Octa-vian Popescu. Dr. Tantoco will function as a hospitalist and see patients on a part-time basis until the end of the year. In January, she will begin a full-time practice in Internal Medicine.
