Dear Parishioners,

The Feast of St. Blaise is February 3rd, which is on Wednesday. It has been a tradition that we bless throats on the weekend before St. Blaise so that people may take advantage of the graces from the saint. However, like everything else, it has to be different this year. The priest will say the blessing over all the people at the end of Mass and then anyone who wanted to be blessed with the candles can come forward, keeping social distancing with masks on and without making any contact, to receive an individual blessing gesture. It is our attempt to make things as close to normal as possible while respecting the requirements.

It has been wonderful to see more people at Mass each week. I think that the narrative that was promoted that claimed that Mass is dangerous is not true. We take all the precautions required of us including marking off pews, wearing masks at all times, and maintaining social distancing. In all our time doing this, there has not been one outbreak attributed to any of our Catholic Churches in Maine, and yet, I was talking to a couple who said they were fearful of being at Mass at this time. The strange thing is that later in the conversation, they invited me to dinner at a restaurant with them. Needless to say, it was hard for me to reconcile the reasoning that it was not OK to go to Church for one hour in marked off pews but it IS OK to go for 3 hours at a restaurant. Sorry for my little digression. I brought up the increase of the number of people at Mass as a way to ask that maybe some people could take turns being in the Church and in the overflow section. I realize it is hard to go to Mass in a separate place only to watch it on a screen, but it would be nice if some people chose in holy sacrifice to go into the overflow every other week or once a month to give other people a chance to be in the main church. It is a sacrifice but it is also an act of charity allowing others who cannot always get to church as early as some to sometimes be in the Church to keep their connection to the faith. I have no plans to require people to take turns, but instead appeal to the goodness in the heart to think that maybe once a month people could opt freely to take the least desirable place in order that others could get a chance to be in the church. I think Jesus told a parable once about taking the lowest seat. Maybe God might smile down upon you through the whole Mass. Just a thought. ---Fr Daniel

The Business Manager Corner: You may now go on the website to request a report of your 2020 offering for tax purposes, you may also call the office. Please know that we legally have until January 31, 2021 to send these to you, but our goal is to have them out within two weeks from your request. Please be patient. Also, on the Tax Contribution Report, I have been receiving calls regarding the report and there seems to be some confusion. Please remember that there are five churches that make up Prince of Peace parish and that your donations go to the parish to help operate all five churches. So please review the total amount of the donation for accuracy and not the individual items listed. If you still have concerns, please give me a call at the office.

They are still working on Holy Family church finishing up the limestone repairs and sealing. This past Thursday 1/28/2021 the track lights at Holy Cross were fixed. I met this past week with one of our electricians to go over several more projects, like the Basilica exterior lighting, lighting outside Holy Family at the front entrance and revisiting the lighting in Holy Trinity church. We are still researching keypad locks for all the churches. Things are starting to happen little by little.

Do you have your estate in order? Be on the lookout in the coming weeks for upcoming information regarding leaving part of your estate to Catholic Foundation of Maine to benefit the future of our Parish.

As always if you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to give me a call.

Peace,

Joline

Saint Dominic Academy-Educating Today the Compassionate Leaders of Tomorrow As we prepare to celebrate Catholic Schools Week here at St. Dom’s, we find ourselves reflecting on what makes our school such a wonderful learning environment. We know from our history that the students of today will be the leaders of our society tomorrow, and for over 75 years, St. Dom’s has educated students to be leaders in both their Church, their community, and in society at large. We expect our students to be of service to others and we know because of the strong faith formation they receive; they will lead with virtue and compassion and transform the organizations in which they associate. Now, perhaps even more than ever, these are the principles we seek for our children’s’ education and for our humanity's future.

At Saint Dominic Academy, we provide a comprehensive educational program where contemporary instructional methods are rooted in traditional Catholic values. We offer a strong, rigorous core curriculum enhanced by lessons in theology, technology, fine arts, handwriting, music and other programming. Our lessons are grounded by a core set of values; the kind you want your children to have and demonstrate in their daily lives. Kindness to others, dignity for self and humankind, giving to the most vulnerable, respect for our planet, and a call for peace. A strong moral compass guides the faculty, staff and administration every day and we lead by example and demonstrate to our students the critical difference between right and wrong, helping our students grow.

During Catholic Schools Week, we celebrate the good work of our students, faculties, clergy, parishes and communities, but also invite the greater community to be a part of our schools in a new way. Parents who chose St. Dom’s are committed to the values and philosophy of Catholic education where spiritual development fosters mental and physical growth. Interested families may visit the school at any time or visit us online at Stdomsmaine.org. Please contact us! I welcome the chance to speak to you personally to discuss how St. Dom’s will make a difference in the life of your child.

Consecration to St. Joseph This is the Year of St. Joseph and starting on February 15, parishioners are invited to begin the journey of 33 days toward consecrating themselves to St. Joseph. Consecration to St. Joseph emulates the tried-and-true preparation method employed by St. Louis de Montfort in his Marian consecration, highlighting many of St. Joseph’s titles, privileges, and heroic virtues. You'll spend about 20-30 minutes a day on a short exposition on one of the invocations in the powerful Litany of St. Joseph, followed by a reading on St. Joseph, concluding with the recitation of the Litany of St. Joseph. Visit our website at princeofpeace.me for more information on how to order your book to begin.

CATHOLIC MEN’S GROUP

GOSPEL OF MARK During Lent, try in independent study of the Gospel of Mark. Each week, a new video done by Fr. Daniel will be available to watch each week for the 5 weeks of Lent. Study from the comfort of your own home, at your own pace to understand the Word of God and know Him

RICE BOWLS Each Lent, Catholic families across the country unite to put their faith into action through prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Through CRS Rice Bowl, families learn about how our sisters and brothers across the globe overcome hardships like hunger and malnutrition, and how through Lenten alms, we have the power to make the world a better place for all.
