Satree named junior herdsmanA huge amount of effort went into the cattle at the National Junior Angus Show (NJAS),

even before they entered the showring. Katy Satree, Montague, Texas, knows this well. She was recognized as the Junior Herdsman of the Year at the 2012 NJAS in Louisville, Ky., for her commitment to the Angus breed and the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA).

“It is an honor to be chosen by my fellow juniors,” says Satree, who this year competed in her 12th NJAS. “Their recognition is truly humbling.”

The Junior Herdsman of the Year award recognizes NJAA members who show dedication to their animals, a strong work ethic, ability to work with customers and other junior members, and skills to prepare their cattle for show.

Every junior exhibiting cattle at the NJAS is eligible to vote for the award winner. Throughout the week, they watch their peers and determine who they believe exemplifies qualities of the best junior herdsman.

Satree’s years of showing Angus cattle have been successful. She has had many grand champions and has been recognized for the high-quality cattle she exhibits. But the Junior Herdsman award is a special honor of which Satree says she is very proud. She received a silver belt buckle, donated by the American Angus Association, at the NJAS closing ceremonies July 20. She will be attending Texas Tech University in the fall, majoring in animal science.

@Bryce Fitzgerald and Ryan Callahan tied to win the boy’s Silver Pitcher Award. Katy Satree earned the girl’s Silver Pitcher Award.

@Bryce Fitzgerald was named Premier Junior Breeder and Premier Breeder.
