• The growing European divide had led to an arms race between the main countries. • There was a desire to create a large amount of

weapons as well as building up a nation’s army and navy• The armies of both France and Germany had more

than doubled between 1870 and 1914, and there was fierce competition between Britain and Germany for mastery of the seas.

The deliberate murder of a high-ranking government official.

• The “spark” that started WWI• On June 28, 1914 Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir

to the Austria Hungarian Throne was assassinated by Gavrilo Princip, a Serbian nationalist who believed that Bosnia should belong to Serbia
