Below is an excerpt from an article in the new York times Magazine, dated December 19, 2014. the article is entitled: “Praying for Common ground at the ChristmasDinner table.”

the excerpt below does have a message for us all. Don’t let the title mislead you! thefamily described is made up of Muslim, born-again Christian, atheist, and evangelicalmembers. from different people of different faiths around the table came questions aboutwhat ethnic dishes should be served and what kind of prayer should be said.

“My family is, in many ways, emblematic of America in the 21st century: multiethnic, multicultural, and multireligious. i am a Muslim from iran. My wife is a Christian fromwestern Pennsylvania. that may seem an incongruous coupling. But when we first met, werealized almost immediately that we shared the same values and worldview, even though weexpressed those things in a different spiritual language.

that’s all religion is, really: a language made up of symbols and metaphors that allowpeople to communicate, to themselves and to others, the ineffable experience of faith. ialready spoke my wife’s spiritual language (Christianity); i taught her mine (islam). Andnow we are a spiritually “bilingual” household. Actually, we are multilingual, consideringwe are committed to teaching our children all the spiritual languages of the world so that theycan choose for themselves which ones, if any, they prefer in communicating their ownindividual faith experience.

But that is also the reason the prayer was tripping us up that first Christmas together. Wewere having a difficult time understanding one another’s spiritual languages, let alonecoming to a consensus on which language to use. it reminded me of a Sufi parable about fourhungry travelers from different countries who are trying to decide what to buy with the singlecoin they hold in common. the Persian wants to spend the coin on angur; the turk, on uzum;the Arab, on inab; and the greek, on stafil. Confusion turns to anger as the four travelersargue among themselves. it takes a passing linguist to explain to them that they are all, infact, asking for the same thing: grapes.

the parable gave me an idea. “Let’s skip the formal prayer and just tell each other whatwe are grateful for,” i suggested. “What we are anxious about. What we hope for in thecoming year.”

We took turns going around the circle: Muslim, Christian, atheist. And, as i expected, weended up expressing similar dreams and aspirations for ourselves and our loved ones, similarfears and anxieties, similar gratitude for all that we’ve been given. As with the haplesstravelers in the Sufi parable, we realized that we were all feeling the same way; we were justexpressing that feeling in different spiritual languages.

once the prayer was settled, it was time to sit down for a traditional Christmas meal ofturkey and kebabs.”

in so many ways but certainly in a fairly mild type of disagreement, the story suggests aglobal problem. the story could take place in many different settings with simple solutionslike the one in this column. At the same time the story does unfold in other settings wherewars are fought and people are slaughtered because there are groups of all kinds in the worldwho believe that their spiritual language is the only legitimate one. if you don’t accept theirprayers and beliefs you must die.

for groups like iSiS, the concept of religious freedom does not exist, and there are toomany like iSiS in the world who are a global threat which could harm us all. i am not goingto propose a solution to this problem, though there is one, not a simple or quick fix.

Here is what must happen, and i put it in the words of Jimi Hendrix whose words cameinto my possession at about the same time i read the article from the times which i justexcerpted:

“When the power of loveovercomes the love of powerthe world will know peace.”

the British invasion is a significant point in history. in culturalterms it refers to the Who, Rolling Stones and the Beatles to name afew rock and roll bands to cross the pond to invade America. theBeatles recorded a song “Revolution” which used words like“evolution”, “solution”, “contribution”, “institution” and“constitution”. it was meant to be a peaceful and constructivechange. So is this.

BMR – these three letters seem innocuous enough but theyrepresent something quite significant in the life of CBS.

B’nai Mitzvah Revolution is a program which has been in effect,on the West Coast initially, for two years. the Midwest was invitedinto the experiment just this year and Beth Shalom is one of tencongregations in the mix. each community has developed a team ofsynagogue professional staff as well as laity to spearhead the projectfor their community. every synagogue signed an agreement toengage in BMR enthusiastically and responsibly, attending monthlymeetings as well as quarterly meetings of the collective whole.

the purpose of BMR is to forensically examine the BMexperience in one’s community and to honestly report on itssuccesses and failings, strengths and weaknesses. By virtue ofpartaking in multiple homework assignments, interviews with othercongregation members, dialogue with the other congregations anddreaming of what “might be”, each congregation will complete thistwo year program with an individualized new vision for theircommunity. to date we have found BMR to be quite elucidating andrewarding.

Beth Shalom realizes that there are many quadrants of ourcommunity. Some are based on personal interests or religiousinterest, age and family composition to name but a few variables.Any change in our BM program will not affect all of CBS’population and therefore we were focusing on the impact on ouryounger families. through the BMR process we came to realize thatevery member of CBS is a stakeholder in this “revolution” as it willimpact the curriculum of the Hebrew School, the structure of ourShabbat services, our budget, your children and grandchildren’sexperience and, if we do this as well as we plan to, the well-being ofBeth Shalom’s future.

the basic question we need to be asking is “what do you wantfor your (grand)child’s Jewish future”? is the paradigm which hasbeen used for decades the same one which can be successful for thisgeneration? As Rabbi Wolkin said in one of our meetings, “youshould not just go through your Bar/Bat Mitzvah, but the BMexperience should be going through you”. David Barany noted thatany life experience of significance, which is accompanied byanxiousness, nervousness, concern for performance and spiritualweightiness, will change you. And if you wish for it to change youfor the better, and not be a period of time in one’s life upon whichhe/she look back and associate it with disinterest, failure, anxietyand relief when it was over, then one must be willing to investserious and significant effort to heighten the experience. it will

change you, and if you do it right, it will be life changing for thebetter.

We are beginning to imagine a BM journey for your childrenwhich begins far before you ever even receive your BM date. thepreparations of knowledge and practical skills will be sprinkled intoevery child’s Hebrew School years. family Shabbat dinners with theclergy, schmooze time, group projects, retreats, Jr. Congregation, ritual skills, on and on will become the culture of expectancy in oursynagogue and it will not be perceived as a chore, or more to do inan otherwise hectic and schedule filled life, but rather a gift; a gift ofbeing able to be self-reliant in any synagogue, anywhere, and feel athome. to see the world through a Jewish lens and know what isexpected of oneself by Jewish guidelines and family traditions.

there is a lot to report about our BMR journey and i hope to keepyou updated as we plan its implementation. if you wish to learn moreabout the success of BMR to date please see their websitehttp://bnaimitzvahrevolution.org/

At the recent board meeting of the UnitedSynagogue for Conservative Judaism (USCJ),a new President was elected, Margo gold ofAtlanta. i bring this to our synagoguesattention as i have found the USCJ to be avaluable resource for me in my Presidency.Since we support this organization with ourdues, i wanted to tell you more about thisgroup that is the umbrella for ConservativeJudaism in north America.

USCJ brings us the USY program for ouryouth, HAZAK for those over 55, many leadership institutes to helpour leaders and works with the Jewish theological Seminary, theRabbinical Assembly and the Cantors Assembly to bring usprofessional clergy. i attended the international Convention in 2013and also a large synagogue conference a year ago, as well as a coupleof local leadership meetings. What’s the result of all of this? Anunderstanding of the challenges and opportunities that othersynagogues, like ours, have worked through and what we can dohere at CBS to make our home even better than it is now.

i feel that USCJ has made great strides in bringing pertinent ideasto us and that the programs offered will only increase in importanceas time goes on. the bi-annual convention will be taking place inSchaumburg, illinois in november, 2015. if you would like moreinformation about USCJ, please let me know.

feBRUARY – What a great month tospend at Congregation Beth Shalom. While iwas looking at the calendar i realized thatfebruary is a very interesting month. eachweek in february is exactly 7 days. Yes,every week has seven days, however whatmakes this a bit interesting is that no weekstarts in the middle, meaning february 1st isa Sunday and february 28th ends on aSaturday. there are no boxes in the februarycalendar that are empty. Maybe this is

because it’s the shortest month of the year. Maybe the month offebruary is a great month to participate in so many fantasticprograms at CBS. the Month of february includes the HebrewCalendar Months Shevat and Adar, how great is that.

i know that all of us don’t enjoy leaving our homes when theweather drops into the 20’s, teens, single digits or below 0temperatures. Sitting by a fire, watching our favorite show orlistening to some wonderful music is usually the way to go. i say, dare to be different. Spend some time this month at CBS. We havenot seen many of you since the High Holidays, now is the time tocome out and participate in your community. Shabbat is here everyweek, join us for services any friday night or Saturday morning andremember we will always feed you, your family and guests to aKiddush meal.

TRACY SAFRON SUGGESTSnomi eve’s coming-of-age story, Henna House, begins in

Yemen in 1923. Adela Damari is five years old and her lifedepends on her mother finding her a fiancée immediately. Adela’sfather is ill and as a Jewish child she is subject to the orphanDecree. this rule commands that any fatherless child can beconfiscated, converted, and quickly adopted by a Muslim familyif they are not affianced. the Jews engaged their children astoddlers and they were married the moment they reached maturity.Adela is the youngest of nine children in her family, and hertemperamental mother begrudgingly searches for a husband forher. Her cousin Asaf appears to be her savior

Another cousin enters Adela’s life when her mysterious AuntRahel and her daughter Hani come to live with the family. Rahelwas once the most famous henna dyer in Aden. only marriedwomen usually wear henna body adornment. Hani, though single, arrives at Adela’s house fully decorated in elaborate henna. Adelais stunned by the art displayed on her cousin’s body. Hani andRahel teach Adela about henna and open her eyes to the world.each page of Henna House guides the reader more deeply intoAdela’s fascinating life. eve’s novel is like a work of henna-beautiful and intricate.

HAPPY PURIM!This year we are not feeding you – We are asking you to feed others!

DID YOU KNOW?THREE MITZVOT OF PURIM

• Listen to the reading of the Megillah of Esther and drown out theevil Haman’s name with a grogger

• Send gifts of food• Give gifts to the needy

How to fulfill the three mitzvot in one easy task, you ask?

We have the answer!

This Purim, when the wicked Haman’s name is called out during theMegillah reading, bring a box of macaroni and cheese or any otheruncooked pasta to use as your grogger! After the service, all food will bedonated to Northfield Food Pantry.

Other ideas for groggers – dried beans, cereal, popcorn kernels, ricepilaf – whatever makes noise when you shake it! PLEASE NO NUTS.

Extra boxes are welcome and needed for the food pantry.Any questions, please contact

Sandee Levin at [email protected](Sponsored by the Social Action Committee)

The Biblical scroll or Megillah of Esther sets forth the classical strugglebetween good and evil. At the same time it is the prototype for the long history ofpersecutions which the Jewish people would suffer. Haman, angry at Mordecai, the Jew, tells King Achashverosh that the Jews pose a threat to the PersianEmpire. A lot (pur) is cast and a date for the massacre of the Jews is set. QueenEsther, Mordecai’s cousin, intervenes and saves her people from destruction.

To remember this triumph Jews were instructed to observe the fourteenth ofthe month of Adar "as the days wherein the Jews had rest from their enemies, andthe month which was turned from sorrow to gladness, and from mourning into agood day, that they should make them days of feasting and gladness, and ofsending portions to one another, and gifts to the poor” (Esther 9:22).

We celebrate in the Synagogue with the public reading of Megillat Esther, making loud sounds with noise-makers (groggers) whenever the name of Hamanis read. Children's masquerades and Purim carnivals add to the joyous spirit. Asmentioned in the Megillah, it is customary for friends to exchange sweets, usuallytriangular cookies called Hamantaschen (Haman’s Hats) and to give charity to thepoor. Purim is considered a minor holiday, but it is a time of great joy for the Jewishpeople.

Purim evening will feature two simultaneous readings of the Megillah. One willbe of the Megillah in its entirety. The other - intended especially for children andfamilies - will be abbreviated and accompanied by lots of singing and our annualcostume parade!

The entire Megillah will be read again on Sunday morning as part of themorning minyan.

KERUV CORNERKERUV: Welcoming Interfaith Families

BOB SPECTORShalom Chaverim,

i hope 2015 is beginning as a year of peace, calm, happiness, and good health for all of you.on December 7th Rabbi Wolkin, Rabbi Melman, and i participated in a discussion on where ourKeruv/intermarriage initiative was, is and isheading. one of the key points made during ourdiscussion was that the concept of Keruv

(bringing together) must go beyond the welcoming and embracingof our intermarried families. for example, Cantor Stoehr’sH.U.g.S initiative is an excellent example of how we can andshould be embracing of our families who have family memberswith a physical, medical, or emotional disability. But is this enough? How welcoming and inclusive are we ofmembers who may not fall into a more easily identifiableconstituency? for Shabbat services we refer to the ushers asambassadors, implying that their responsibility goes beyondmaintaining order, but also are expected to be friendly andwelcoming of those joining us for services. Shouldn’t we all bewelcoming to each other? i recently attended a program withseveral Bot colleagues on Relational Judaism. Jewish leadersacross the country are acknowledging that we are not doingenough to promote our synagogues as not just places to visit butas communities that are extensions of our homes and families.the basic premise of Relational Judaism is not that complicated.Simply put, we relate to each other the same way we relate tofamily and friends who enter our homes- part of our friendshipand family circle. Recently, a fellow congregant commented tome that being single in our congregation can feel very isolating, especially if you do not have children. How many of our memberswho attend services by themselves feel the same way? How oftendo you introduce yourself to someone you don’t know at ouronegs or Kiddush meals? i know i can do more to connect withothers i do not know.

i would like to pose a challenge both to myself and all of youin this year of 5775 and 2015. Let’s not just talk the talk, but walkthe walk. When you are at services, programs or meetings, introduce or reintroduce (if your social memory is like mine)yourself to three people you have not met (or remember meeting)before. Something this simple will exponentially transform oursynagogue from a place to visit to a place that feels like anextension of our homes because we are more eager and willing tobe in places and be around people who we know and know us.that is what Keruv is all about.

As always, i welcome your constructive comments andfeedback. i can be reached at [email protected]

So much of recent research in Jewish education quantifieswhat we all already know to be true. the most significantpredictor of a child’s Jewish identity and practice is that child’sparents’ commitment to their own Jewish identities and theirchildren’s Jewish communal experiences, including school. thatis the frame that i want to share with you for our recent events.

the first was the Chanukah Celebration for our Kindergartenthrough second graders and their parents. We created Chanukahcards for Beth Shalom’s adopted 890 Palchod israeli paratrooperunit. We made and laminated drip mats which included both theblessings and the instructions for how to place and light thecandles. We designed beautiful dreidel-shaped “stained glass”window hangings to adorn Beth Shalom’s Winter garden. ourfamilies decorated tzedakah cans, reinforcing the idea thatChanukah is about giving as well as receiving and that this isour responsibility throughout the year. taking this idea a stepfurther, our families created two Chanukah themed quilts forgidwitz Place for Assisted Living.

the second was our participation in Beth Shalom’s ChanukahHappening 2014. our Hebrew school students, and manyparents, came to participate in the event which featured singertodd Kessler and our clergy. Planned and executed by LeannBlue, this was a kvell-fest as it brought together disparateelements of Beth Shalom’s membership in a unified celebration.our fifth graders added to the ambience with their highlyoriginal entries in our “Design your own Chanukiyah” contest.

in mid-January, author erika Weisz paid our school a visit. She has a unique and effective way to address with youngchildren the growing problem of bullying. in one of her latestworks, “one thousand and one Words, she creates a characternamed theodore whose wit turns into tough words for thosearound him. She imagines him waking up one morningcompletely tongue tied. our children learned along withtheodore as he discovered the hurtful and even damaging powerof his words.

one week later, our Kindergarteners and their parents /siblings / grandparents / uncles / and aunts celebrated the littleones’ introduction to Jewish learning at Beth Shalom. thechildren were wonderful, sharing their learning about holidaysand bible stories. Music Specialist Carole Spiegel led thechildren in two of the songs that they learned earlier in the year.President glen Roter and education VP Bob Spector alsorecognized our families’ commitment to Jewish education andpassed out certificates of achievement.

the following friday our fifth through seventh gradersgathered with families to celebrate Shabbat with a student-ledservice and, of course, Chinese food. our erev Shabbatattendance continued the strong tradition we have developedover the last few years.

2015 has started off with quite the bang!our CBS USY chapter started off the new Year welcoming our

8th graders to our chapter. We have over 15 new faces coming everythursday night! our programming year kicked off with a huge limoscavenger hunt program with Beth Hillel and Moriah. our kids wentall over the city chasing clues that they were given based onlandmarks in the city.

i’d like to give a huge shout-out to the Men’s Club basketballsquad, who once again gave our USY teams a run for their money.Sadly, the streak continues as the Men’s Club fell just short of avictory. if you don’t have plans before the big game, we are having afamily field trip to see frozen at the United Center. We should beback just in time to catch the game, so please contact me if you areinterested in attending the program on february 1st.

Lastly, i would like to promote our upcoming Hamantashen forHunger program. in the near future you will be e-mailed a flyer, which has an order form to order Hamantashen from our USYchapter. All proceeds go to help fight hunger, as well as to a fundwhich will help our USY’ers attend programs and conventions. theHamantashen will be delicious, and all donations are appreciated.

As this is my first article of 2015, i want to wish everyone a happyand healthy year, and i know we will all have lots of blessingscoming our way in the next year. if you have any questions orcomments regarding the youth program at Beth Shalom, please sendme an e-mail: [email protected].

TICKET REQUEST FORM Dancing with the ***CBS*** Stars

2015 Congregation Beth Shalom Fundraising Event

February 21, 2015 • 7:00 P.M.

(Performances begin at 8:00 P.M.) On Saturday, February 21, 2015, eight CBS members will lace up their dancing shoes, and paired with their professional dance partner will compete for the CBS Mirror Ball Trophy.

Months prior to this event, each of these members will have participated in a minimum of 12 dance lessons, generously provided by Fred Astaire Dance Studios of Northbrook to support our efforts, in order to enhance their dancing skills. With their professional partner they will select a dance style—from Waltz to Rumba, from Tango to Contemporary—and then choreograph a dance number for the evening. Winners will be selected from a combination of scores received from a panel of judges as well as audience votes. Bring your own dancing shoes as well. Before and after the performances, a DJ will be playing music and the dance floor will be open to all attendees to dance (or just listen) to a variety of music and share in the fun (no dance skills required). There will be snacks prior to the contest and a Dairy Dessert Table after the performances while we count up the votes to determine the winner. Congregation Beth Shalom is asking for your support to make this fundraising event a success. Tickets are $18 a person in advance; $25 at the door. Admission includes snacks, a coffee and tea bar along with a Dairy Dessert Table. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
