Coming out of the last quarter of 2013, we are all aware that available inventory is at an all time low. However, there are several new projects &/or additional phases of existing projects that are in various stages of completion which will help with the inven- tory shortage. Here’s a glance at some of what’s coming up: The Elements at Edgemont Highlands If you haven’t been out to get a tour from Jamie Marquez, who along with her husband Luis, is the owner and developer of The Elements, you need to go. They currently have 6 townhomes under construction, one is already under contract and the remain- ing 5 units are priced under $500,000. With 4 floor plans to choose from, ranging from 2bd/2ba 1365 sq. ft. home, to 3 bd/2.5 bath 2200 sq. ft. home, these townhomes are efficient, well designed, loaded with extra storage, all plumbed for air conditioning and all have oversized two car garages. Given the price point, you’ll be surprised at the quality of finishes and aention to detail. Completion and Certificates of Occupancy will be within the next couple weeks, so yes, you can write a contract now and close in a “normal” time frame. Single family homes in the Animas Valley Due to a few remaining details to be worked out with the county, we only get a teaser glimpse of the new project located on CR 203. Timberline Builders will be offering single family homes and possibly some duplexes starting around $400,000. Several homes are already under construction and they hope to deliver this inventory in the spring. They are not accepting offers yet, but if you’re interested, contact Jarrod Nixon at Coldwell Banker, 970-259-3333. Sachs Construction building single family homes at Edgemont Highlands Sachs Construction currently has one home under construction that will be priced in the low 500’s. This home will have one of the best rear outdoor areas in the Highlands which provides a wonderful outdoor living/entertaining area while taking advan- tage of the superb views. Unique finish details will be throughout the home with amenities and features normally found in a much higher priced home. A second house slated to begin in approximately 6 weeks that will be 2000 sq. ft that will be priced in the $480’s. There are plans to build 2 to 3 more homes for sale that will be in the $480 to $499 range. Sachs construction will be creating a home with high end finishes, unique details and a design structured to truly provide a quality southwest Colorado lifestyle with regards to outdoor living spaces, open floor plans, and warm designer colors. Sachs brings much of their restau- rant lighting experience into their homes with lighting designs that create a warm space with a rich feeling. These homes will not be made available to the public until construction is complete. The developer is working on plans for a few semi-custom home products includ- ing a 1,100 sf casita, a detached 1,800 sf townhome, and a single family home at about 2,200 sf. All will meet or beat the manda- tory 50 HERS energy rating requirement at Twin Bues. For more information contact: Team Twin Bues at the Wells Group 970-382-3024. Today, Bud resides at Westgate Tower Apartments where he enjoys a level of independence, while participating in some of the available enhancements to keep him comfortably housed and supported.

Recently, Bud lost a long-time friend who had also resided at Westgate. Bud was able to serve his friend alongside Home Hospice when the gentleman chose to live out his final weeks in his own apartment at Westgate.

Following the loss of his friend, Bud, who, during his career with VOA had served as a VOA minister, was able to benefit from the consolation offered by current ministers, Dale Elliott and Sylvie DeZutter, who conducted a memorial for Bud's friend.

At Volunteers of America, we are both called to serve and, in the process, are served. Bud is a perfect example of this fact.

Durango Area Association of Realtors Goes Above and Beyond

Submitted by Sarada LeavenworthFor many years in our community, the Durango Area Association of Realtors (DAAR) has been quietly and steadily making a tremendous difference for those in need.

Every year, DAAR coordinates an annual Golf Tournament at the Glacier Club, an effort supported by all 275 DAAR members. With the funds raised, DAAR awards grants to non-profit organizations throughout the region, as well as provides college scholarships for outgoing seniors from all high schools in La Plata and San Juan Counties.

This year, 17 organizations and multiple high school seniors received these exceptional grants from DAAR, including the Volunteers of America Southwest Safehouse and Durango Community Shelter. The Southwest Safehouse and Durango Community Shelter put a lot of time and preparation into making sure the holidays are special for and every child and adult has multiple presents under the tree on Christmas morning. One gentleman at the Durango Community Shelter shared with us last year that it was the first time he had received a Christmas gift with his name on it in over ten years.

The donations received from the Durango Area Association of Realtors supports all 24/7/365 services at both the Shelter and the Safehouse. It also goes a long way in ensuring that we can make the holidays joyful and special for every child, woman and man we serve. Thank you, DAAR, for setting such a brilliant example of change-making philanthropy in our community.

All Roads Lead Back to VOA

Submitted by Kay Koch

President and CEO Dianna Kunz has been quoted as saying, "All roads lead back to Volunteers of America." One individual who is the epitome of this statement is Bud Imig. Now, 82, Bud remembers his early days with VOA where he served at the Mission on Champa Street and then was hired in the 1970's to be the first director of the Sunset Park Senior Center.

For years, Bud Imig managed the Senior Center along with his wife, Patti. They provided music, led activities and kept a lively schedule at the center, welcoming residents of the property as well as seniors from the neighborhood to the
