The 30th annual Burger Fest will sizzle in the Village of Hamburg from 11 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. in the Village of Hamburg on Saturday, July 18, marking the 130th birthday of the all-American hamburger created in Hamburg, NY at the Erie County Fair. Located along Main and Buffalo Streets (Rte. 62) and in the Munic-ipal Parking Lot, the festival offers diverse entertain-ment for people of all ages. The one-day festival includes live music beginning at noon on the Main Stage in the municipal lot along with other entertainment venues on Main Street. Rock ‘n Roll to the Rescue will entertain adjacent to the KeyBank Classic Car Show and Mike Margerum and the Nickel City Road Show will host children’s games and contests. A new event “Magic on Main Street” will showcase dancing, martial arts and other per-formances by local youth at 4:45 p.m. Children’s arts and crafts and inflatables will be found at Kids Space in the lot off of Main Street. Vendors, merchants and not-for-profit organizations will set up along Main and Buffalo Streets. The Burger Fest Arts and Crafts Show will also be found along Buffalo Street.Burger Fest celebrates the birth of the hamburger in Hamburg in 1885 and is hosted by the Rotary Club of Hamburg, the Hamburg Rotary Sunrise Club, the Ki-wanis Club and the Lions Club. Hamburg held its first Burgerfest in 1985 to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of the hamburger after organizers discovered a history book detailing the burger’s origins. Frank and Charles Menches, vendors who traveled the world’s fair circuit, and who have been credited with also creating Cracker Jacks and ice cream cones, concocted the all-American burger. Descendants of the Menches brothers from Ohio, who remain in the food industry three generations later, have traveled to Hamburg to participate in several Burgerfest celebra-tions over the years, bringing along the secret recipe. In recent years, Imagine Hamburg volunteers have cooked up the tasty burgers in the true Menches tra-dition with the family’s guidance and blessing.Legend has it that the Menches brothers ran out of their usual pork sausage that hot, fateful day at the fair and turned to local butchers to replenish their sup-plies. When no pork was available, a butcher suggest-ed ground beef. The Menches brothers purchased the beef, but added secret ingredients, including coffee grounds to create a unique flavor. The hamburger was born!

K eeping your dog socialized with other dogs is one of the most important aspects of canine ownership. Luckily, there are many options to help keep your dogs social with other dogs this summer. The first option is the Town of Evans new dog park. The dog park is located between the Town Hall and the Middle School on Route 5. The second option is Doggie Daycare. Daycare offers a controlled environ-ment for dogs to play while their owners are working or busy during the day. One of the newest options included with Doggie Daycare are the Canine Splash Parks. Splash Park’s are a healthy, safe opportunity for dogs to play with doggie friends while getting wet! Dogs that love the water, or playing with the hose will go crazy for the splash park. Creature Comforts Pet resort located in The Town of Evans is one of the few locations in the country that offers this unique feature year round
Creature Comforts Splash Park offers an over 500 square foot indoor water park with another 500 square feet of outdoor pool yard. The Splash Park includes a fire hydrant spray feature with floor jets that spray upward and a life sized palm tree that sprays water diagonally. There are also shallow pools for those who prefer to get extra wet. The water used in the fountains is fresh tap water. We do not re-circulate the water. This eliminates germs and bacteria in the water supply. Dogs may join a daycare group of friends in the splash park or you can set up a private party for just your dogs to play on their own. The park is also available for rental for dog birthday parties. For more information, or to make a reservation for your canine friend, call Creature Comforts at (716) 549-1761. Or better yet, stop by anytime during our lobby hours to check out the resort!

At Bert Weidner’s, cooking chicken barbecue-style is a way of life. Our family has been barbecuing chicken at local events for more than 45 years. We grill our chicken over an open flame and baste it with our own special-recipe barbecue sauce until it is cooked to perfection--golden brown, juicy, tender, crispy on the outside, and always delicious.
Prices are less than you might think, and we will deliver your order free of charge within approximately 5 miles of our Eden, NY kitchens. Please see our delivery zones map for details. Delivery charges outside of our region are still very reasonable and exceptions can be made for large orders.

Tucked away in the countryside, Double D.A.B. Rid-ing Stable in Ripley provides a hands-on, outdoor ex-perience to all who make the trek.Family owned and operated, the stable has been in operation for 33 years, and is still providing trail rides, farm tours, a picnic area and more to those who wish to experience farm life for themselves."We have over 300 acres of trails, and they are beau-tiful," said Darlene Breads, co-owner with Douglas Bowen. "The rides are geared for people to spend leisurely time on a horse. They don't have to have a lot of experience."The facility boasts 80 horses, most of which are bred by Breads, as well as geese, miniature pigs, llamas, chickens, donkeys and calves."Normally, we provide a farm tour with the trail or pony rides, so visitors get to see all the animals," she said, adding that the animals are also part of a petting farm, where children of all ages can have a face-to-face experience with them. "We do birthday parties here, and we also have a fire pit, so someone can roast marshmallows if they want to. It's a great way to get in touch with nature."Aside from the animals on the farm, visitors may also see other wildlife on the trails, Breads said."I've already seen some baby geese," she said with a laugh. "I've seen eagles, a hawk, deer and frogs. Frogs are always a hit with the little kids."Breads said she depends on her team, including her daughter, Chelsey, to maintain high quality operations from day to day.
Double D. A. .B. Riding Stable Provides First-Hand Farm Experience
"I have some of the best volunteers," she said. "My volunteers are my help, and sometimes, it's organized chaos. It's amazing."While many people have become disconnected with nature, Breads said the stable is a great way to recon-nect and relax."I love how the sun comes through the trees. It's just beautiful," she said. "(The rides) are for the horses and the people to come out and enjoy nature. Also, it's so people can come out and get their hands on farm life."During the summer, the stable and trails are open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with sunset rides after 4:30 p.m. Breads asks that guests who plan to visit call ahead for reservations so preparations can be made. The stables are located at 5811 Welch Hill Road in Ripley. To make reservations, call 736-4418. To find out more about the stables or their offerings, visit www.doubledab.net or search for "Double D.A.B Rid-ing Stable" on Facebook.

43Angola and Eden-North Collins Pennysavers Celebrate Summer 2015
R ecovery from the recession that began in 2008 has sparked renewed interest in vacation travel. Resort bookings are up, and millions will enjoy exotic vaca-tions in the months to come. While discretionary spending is increasing, some in-dividuals and families continue to take a conservative approach to their finances, and that approach extends to how they spend their time off. Many are still em-bracing “staycations,” in which families forgo travel in favor of staying home. Staycations may not be as exotic as trips abroad, but there are several ways that families can make their staycations enjoyable and memorable.· Invest in your home or lifestyle. Instead of bank-rolling a trip overseas, channel those funds into im-provements for your home or yard to create a relaxing atmosphere you can enjoy year-round. Install that pool or landscape the backyard to make it feel like a tropical paradise. Coasting across the water of a lake or ocean is an enjoyable pastime, so repurpose your vacation funds to buy a boat or some jet skis that you can enjoy throughout the warmer months.· Become a tourist in your hometown. Chances are you have never experienced the sights of your home-town the way a tourist might. Plan a few days when you can act like someone visiting your town or city for the first time. Go to the top of that tallest mountain or get a tour of that local factory. Seek out and visit monuments and points of history in your community. Hop on one of those sight-seeing buses and learn something new about where you live. You may just be surprised at what you can discover.· Look for hidden gems. Some local businesses may be willing to open up for “behind the scenes” tours if you ask. This can be a fun excursion for young chil-dren. Ask employees of a movie theater if you can
see the projection room. Newspaper offices may host tours of their facilities. Even a bowling alley can be fascinating to kids if they can see ball-return mecha-nisms or how equipment is stored. Watching the zam-boni machine clean the ice at a rink also may be an entertaining sneak peak into rink operations.· Splurge on a show or sporting event. Attend an event you normally wouldn’t unless you were on va-cation. Take a trip to see a Broadway or Broadway-in-spired musical at a nearby theater or take the family to see your local sports team play a home game against its biggest rival. Treat yourself to concession stand snacks and a few souvenirs.· Dine out a few nights. Vacations often entail eating out, especially if meals are not included in a traditional vacation package. Use your staycation as the oppor-tunity to dine at local restaurants you have yet to visit. Indulge the kids one night and put them in charge of choosing the meals. Forget those diet plans for a day or two and savor that triple-scoop ice cream cone. If the cost of dining out has you concerned, select restaurants that offer coupons in community mailers or value packs.· Read the newspaper or community bulletin. Chanc-es are you can find a number of entertaining and low-cost activities sponsored by your town or other orga-nizations close to home. Fireworks displays, movies under the stars, boat tours, and fairs are just a handful of the fun events that may be coming soon.
· Turn off electronics. Take a break from some of your devices during your staycation. By doing so, you will be less likely to fall into your daily habits and more likely to make the most of your time to rest and relax
