Dear Friends,

I am very excited to welcome you to our Music in the Mountains Spring Concert! This concert is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the incredibly talented artists within our community. We are very lucky this year to feature two local vocal soloists, Kathleen Magee Querec, soprano, and Bren Altenbach, boy soprano. We are also very happy to be joined by Keven McKelvie, a wonderful organist from Southern California.

This concert will feature members of the Music in the Mountains Orchestra and our wonderful Music in the Mountains Chorus. The program will present two regional premiers, Dan Forrest’s Requiem for the Living and Phil Orem’s Hymn to Life. It’s a great honor to perform the music of living composers who continue to find ways to make our art form relevant today. The Forrest Requiem is full of tour-de-force choral singing and features lush romantic harmonies, as well as intense rhythmic declamatory passages. Perhaps the highlight of the work is the ‘Sanctus’, which was inspired by pictures from the Hubble Telescope. We will balance this new work with one of the most loved traditional Haydn Masses, the Missa brevis Sancti Joannis de Deo also known as the Little Organ Mass. This piece features the choir in a completely different manner and it is interesting to juxtapose the way two great composers set traditional text. We round out the program with some fun a capella choral standards that are sure to send you home singing!

This concert will be tribute to all the wonderful talent that is in our community. We can’t wait to share it with all of you.

Warmest Regards,

KEVIN MCKELVIE

Kevin McKelvie began his musical career as a church musician at the age of 12, when he played his first service at his home parish as the assistant organist. Soon thereafter, he began study with the faculty members at the University of Northern Iowa before transferring to Northwestern University, Illinois, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in organ and church music and a Master of Music degree in conducting.

Apart from his continued work as a church musician, Kevin has served as Interim Director of Instrumental Music at Alma College (MI) from 1983-1985 where he conducted the college Marching Band, Concert Band, Jazz Ensemble, the Alma Symphony Orchestra, began a Chapel Choir and taught orchestration and conducting. From 1985-1996, Kevin was the Music Director and Conductor of the McHenry County Youth Orchestras (MCYO) that was named Youth Orchestra of the Year by the Illinois Council of Orchestras in 1996.

KATHLEEN MAGEE QUEREC

Soprano Kathleen Magee Querec received a Master of Music Degree in Voice from Northwestern University and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Graphic Design, with a Minor in Music, from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. Ms. Magee Querec has earned many awards including being a Regional Finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in Chicago, and has performed over fifty operatic roles throughout the United States and abroad. She now resides in Grass Valley, CA with her husband, musician, composer and producer Kyle Querec. Most recently Ms. Magee Querec has appeared with Music In The Mountains singing original compositions with The Young Composers Project.

BREN ALTENBACH

Nine year-old Bren Altenbach has been involved in music from age one, singing and making up songs. His first solo performance was at age four, appearing with the Lake Wildwood Women’s Chorus. Bren sang the National Anthem at the opening ceremony of the Nevada County Fair and has been in high demand ever since, singing at official Veterans’ and Memorial Day ceremonies, Little League games, and Monster Truck/Demolition Derby events. Three years ago, he began his piano studies. A 4th grade student at Deer Creek Elementary, Bren enjoys reading, history, astronomy, sports and cub scouts.

CHORAL SPRING CONCERTPROGRAM NOTES

The “Little Organ Mass” was composed sometime between 1775 and 1778. Saint John of God (1495-1550), after whom today’s Mass was named, was the founder and patron saint of The Brothers Hospitallers, a religious Order devoted to providing medical services to the poor. The Esterhazy family, Haydn’s patrons, was a generous supporter of the Order, and this particular Mass was written for the Brothers’ church in Eisenstadt. To call this edifice a “church” is a bit of an overstatement, for it was little more than a tiny chapel with a small organ and a loft the could accommodate, at most, a handful of instrumentalists--hence this Mass’s nickname, the “Little Organ Mass.” Given the space constraints, Haydn scored this Mass for organ, string quartet and a chorus probably not exceeding twelve singers. The overall structure of the Mass suggests that it was intended for use in an actual Eucharist, with the individual movements kept quite brief, as befits music for a religious service. The chorus sings throughout, with the exception of the “Benedictus” section, which incorporates a soprano soloist. (D. Draganski)

A Requiem, at its core, is a prayer for rest--traditionally, for the deceased. The five movements of Dan Forrest’s Requiem for the Living,(2013), however, form a narrative just as much for the living, and their own struggle with pain and sorrow, as for the dead. The opening movement sets the traditional Introit and Kyrie texts--pleas for rest and mercy--using ever-increasing elaborations on a simple three-note descending motive. The second movement, instead of the traditional Dies Irae, sets Scriptural texts that speak of the turmoil and sorrow which face humanity, while yet invoking musical and textual allusions to the Dies Irae. This movement juxtaposes aggressive rhythmic gestures with long, floating melodic lines, including quotes of the Kyrie from the first movement. The Agnus Dei is performed next (a departure from the usual liturgical order) as a plea for deliverance and peace; the Sanctus, following it, becomes a response to this redemption. The Sanctus offers three different glimpses of the “heavens and earth, full of Thy glory,” all of which develop the same musical motive: an ethereal opening section inspired by images of space from the Hubble Space Telescope, a stirring middle section inspired by images of our own planet as viewed from the International Space Station and a closing section which brings the listener down to Earth, where cities teem with the energy of humanity. The Lux Aeterna, which then closes the work, portrays light, peace and rest for both the deceased and the living. (D. Forrest)
