Animal Cell Plant Cell

Cells – a membrane covered structure that contains all materials necessary for life.

Page 3: Cell vocabulary

Organism – A living thing

Reproduction

Asexual Reproduction:

A single parent produces offspring (new organism) that are identical to the parent

Sexual Reproduction:

Two parents that produce offspring (new organism) that share characteristics of both parents

Page 5: Cell vocabulary

DNA – a molecule found in the cells of all living things. It provides all

instructions for making proteins.

Page 6: Cell vocabulary

Stimulus

A change in an organism’s environment that affects the activity of the organism.

Page 7: Cell vocabulary

Unicellular Organisms Multi-cellular Organism

An organism made of one cell.

An organism made of many cells.

Cellular Organisms

Page 8: Cell vocabulary

Eukaryotic Cell Prokaryotic Cell

A cell that contains a nucleus and a complicated internal structure

Ex. Plant and Animal cells

A cell that does not have a nucleus and does not have membrane-covered organelles

Ex. Bacteria

Cells

Organelle

A structure (mini-organ) within a cell, sometimes surrounded by a membrane.

Chromosomes

Packages of coiled DNA found in the nucleus of a cell.

Cell Theory

1. All organisms are composed of one or more cells.

2. The cell is the basic unit of life in all living things.

3. All cells come from existing cells.

(You must know the parts of cell theory)

Additional Information to Review

Know how to calculate the total magnification on a microscope

(multiply the eyepiece magnification by the magnification of the objective)

Know the reason why we place a cover slip, onto a slide, at an angle (to avoid having air bubbles)

Cells join to form tissues; tissues join to form organs; organs join to form organ systems
