2013 Growing Season In Perspective

1. Weather was the big topic that impacted all of us again this past season. Most of Minnesota struggled to get corn planted before May 20. Prevented planted acres hit SE MN especially hard.

2. Heat stress during the pollination period and ear filling period stressed many hybrids. Products that have early silk dates along with good heat stress showed ad-vantages this fall. For example: Pioneer

5. Beautiful stretches of weather in August and Sep-tember allowed crops to catch up in development.

6. Later frost dates allowed later planted corn to reach maturity, lose kernel moisture and improve test weight.

Data is from Min-nesota Ag Statis-tics showing pre-cipitation departure from normal. Many areas prior to Octo-ber 14 were se-verely deficient for the growing sea-son. Recent rainfall has been a nui-sance for field work, yet it is still very welcome for recharging subsoil reserves.

3. Late Summer drought is becoming the norm as it affected a large portion of the upper Midwest again in 2013. This period of drought and heat stress was both beneficial in that it pushed later planted crops to ma-turity, yet took the top-end off what could have been a remarkable corn and bean crop.

4. Stalk integrity was challenged in some hybrids by nu-trient deficiencies and late season moisture stress.

The results are coming in this fall with several of our new Pioneer® brand corn hybrids performing at a high level. The fol-

lowing tables give an overview of the main 2013 Pioneer corn hybrids and soybean varieties that are being sold in Central and Southern Minnesota. With soybean harvest wrapping up, we have a lot of yield data available from multiple locations. Our new Pioneer brand T-Series soybeans continue to show their yield advantages.
