Zitomer The Central States Water Environment Association (CSWEA) is pleased to nominate Dr. Daniel H. Zitomer for membership status as a Water Environment Federation (WEF) Fellow. Dr. Zitomer is well respected in academia and on local and national levels in the field of wastewater engineering and science. As indicated by his resume, information presented below, in recommendation letters for this application, his licensure as a Professional Engineer, and as a Board Certified Environmental Engineer, Dr. Zitomer meets the eligibility for Fellows Program as indicated by the following criteria: A WEF member for 27 consecutive years (>5 years) Over 20 years of professional experience (>10 years) Professional achievement to preserving/enhancing the global water environment primarily in the practice areas of Education and Research Documented contributions to the profession through participation in professional organizations and community involvement. Dr. Zitomer has had a positive impact on the lives of numerous engineers in their pursuit of Bachelor of Science (BS), Master’s of Science (MS) and doctoral (Ph.D.) degrees in the field of environmental engineering and science through his teaching, mentoring and support. His level of expertise is second to none. He has been teaching environmental engineering since 1995 at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He has shaped the minds and lives of many current engineers, teachers and professors in the field of environmental engineering. His pleasant demeanor and knowledge in the field has made an impact on the students that he has instructed. He is one of the most passionate people that our members have met when it comes to wastewater engineering. We hope and trust that you will learn more about Dr. Zitomer’s contributions to preserving and enhancing the global water environment as you read about his accomplishments in the following paragraphs that describe key contributions to the profession, our members and the committees that make WEF a strong organization. Inadditiontobeinganactivememberofeachofthesocietieslisted,hehasalsobeenactiveinnumeroussubgroups,committeesandsubcommitteesthataretoonumeroustolistherebutcanbefoundinhisresume.Inadditiontohisservicetomanynationalorganizationsandtheirstatechapters,hehasalsobeenanactivepartoftheMarquetteUniversitycommunitylocatedindowntownMilwaukee.Hehasservedonnumerousuniversitycommittees,CollegeofEngineeringcommitteesandDepartmentofCivilandEnvironmentalEngineeringcommittees.HehasworkedwithstudentchaptersofmanyorganizationsincludingHabitatforHumanityintheMilwaukeearea.HiscommunityworkspreadsfarbeyondthebordersofMilwaukee,WisconsinandtheUnitedStates.HedevelopedaninternationalserviceprogramatMarquetteUniversityin1999thatlaterbecametheexistingstudentchapterofEngineersWithoutBorders(EWB).HehastakenmanystudentgroupstoGuatemalaandElSalvadorworkingwiththelocalpeopleonhousing,bridges,waterandwastewaterimprovementsfortheunderprivilegedinremotecommunities(Figures1and2).Inaddition,hewasateammemberforthe2009AmericanSocietyofCivilEngineersNationalOutstandingCivilEngineeringAchievementAward(OCEA)nominee(MotaguaBridge-LaGarrucha,Guatemala)fortheprojectthatbestillustratessuperiorcivilengineeringskillsandrepresentsasignificantcontributiontocivilengineeringprogressandsociety.

MarquetteUniversityintheareaofenvironmentalengineeringthatheteachestodaynearly20yearslater.Dr.ZitomerhassharedhispassionforthescienceswithmanyengineersworkingontheirMSandPhDdegrees.Hisspecialtyisbiotechnologyandanaerobicdigestion,includingco-digestionandothermeansandmethodsofhandlingandbreakingdownwastewatersolidsintousefulproducts.AtMarquetteUniversityheteachescoursesinchemistry,industrialwastemanagement,wastewaterplantdesign,environmentallabandvariousenvironmentalengineeringcourses.Hehascoauthoredmanypapersandtechnicaljournals.Hehasmentoredmanygraduatestudentdissertationandthesisprojectswhichkeepshisattentiontodetailinthefieldonthecuttingedge(Figure3).Tosaythathisresumeandlevelofcontributionstotheeducationoffuturewastewaterprofessionalsisimpressiveisanunderstatement.ResearchItisobviousfromhislistofaccomplishmentsthatDr.Zitomerhasbeenactivelyinvolvedinwastewaterresearchforthepast20years.HehasoverseennumerousMSandPhDcandidatesandtheirresearch.Hehaspresentedpapersandwrittentechnicaljournal

stewardsofourenvironment.Hehasworkedwithsodabottlersandmanufacturers,cheesecompanies,paperindustries,ethanolplantsandbakeriestonameafew.AtMarquetteheisabletoassimilaterealworlddigestionissuesinalaboratoryenvironmentandthenhelpscaleupsolutionsforfullscaledesignapplicationsbeforemillionsofdollarsarespentoninfrastructureconstruction.Hisworkinbenchscaletestingofanaerobicdigestionhasledtocosteffectivewastewatertreatmentdesignsforseveralwastewaterutilities,includingMilwaukeeandGreenBayMetropolitanSewerageDistricts.OperationsBeinglocatedinMilwaukee,WI,Dr.Zitomer’shashadtheopportunitytoworkontheoperationofoneofthelargestwastewatersystemsintheMidwestandthecountry-thatbeingtheMilwaukeeMetropolitanSewerageDistrict(MMSD).TheMMSDhasbeencontractoperatedbyUnitedWater,Inc.,andnowbyVeoliaWater.Dr.ZitomerhashadtheopportunitytoworkwithMMSD,UnitedWaterandVeoliaonsolutionstomakeMMSDmorecosteffectiveandproductive.MMSDproducesMilorganitewhichisafertilizerandsoilamendmentusedforgolfcoursesandgardenersnationwide.MMSDisalsoaleaderandinnovatorinthefieldofwastewaterscienceandtheenvironmentandDr.Zitomerhasaidedthemintheireffortstomaximizemethanegasproductionviaco-digestionaswellasenergyproductionviabisolidspyrolysis.Dr.Zitomeralsoholdstwopatentsthathavebeenlicensedforfull-scaleapplicationstoincreasemethaneproductionfromanaerobicprocessesviabioaugmentation.Hehasalsoconsultedwithprivateindustryindealingwithindustrialwasteandpretreatmentofindustrialwaste.Hehascontributedtotheefficientoperationanduseofdigestiontoreduceandmitigateindustrialwastestoimprovetheirbottomlineandatthesametimebegoodenvironmentalcorporatecitizensbyreducingtheirenergyandwastefootprints.Byhelpingindustryreducetheirconcentrationofwastes,thisalsoreducestheburdenandstressonlocalmunicipalwastewaterplantsthatallowsthemtofunctionbetterandcanreduceplantupsets.WithinhisresearchgroupandlaboratoryatMarquetteUniversity,hehashelpedmunicipalitiesincludingMMSD,GreenBayMunicipalSewerageDistrict,TheCityofRacine,WIandothersimprovefull-scaleoperations.Insummation,theCSWEAispleasedtonominateDr.DanielH.ZitomerforFellowmembershipstatus.IfCSWEAcanbeofanyfurtherassistanceinthereviewofcandidateDanielZitomerforconsiderationasWEFFellow,pleasedonothesitatetoreachouttous.Respectfully,
