Message From Head

The Centre of Excellence in Disaster Mitigation and Management (CoEDMM) isknowledge development centre on hazard sciences. Its aim is to understand risksof society towards natural and man-made hazards, to impart techno-managerialeducation to the next generation students, facilitate researchers throughadvanced research facilities for innovative knowledge generation, and share thesame through science and technology advises to professional managers indisaster risks, vulnerable communities, analysts and policy makers. Integrated

program of the Centre enhances the quality of learning experience for graduateand professional students who participate in the Centre's research andeducation projects. With the ever increasing pace at which technology isexpanding its reach in today's dynamic world and with the ever growing need forunparalleled demands, the onus is on developing managers with that perfecttouch of technical expertise. CoEDMM has the distinction of being the onlyinstitute in the country where perfect blend of engineers and scientists meetsmanagement discipline producing the techno-managers required to build andmaintain disaster resilience. The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction(SFDRR, 2015) has brought a sweeping change in disaster managementperspective. Paradigm shift towards risk management brings big datamanagement and networking into the focus. The CoEDMM is committed to workfor risk resilience and in bringing changes at local, national and global level asimportant knowledge partner.

The Centre is facilitating cutting edge, cross-sectoral research and conductstraining on disaster risk, hazard and vulnerability mapping, and their mitigationand pre and post disaster management. Since 2015, the Centre isaccommodating SDG and CCA concepts with SFDRR into regular chores/activitiesthrough projects, trainings, expert lectures, conferences, workshops. Now it isacknowledged as knowledge and science and technology dissemination platformeven beyond the national boundary.

The Centre started a multi-disciplinary Post-graduate programme on disastermanagement and mitigation offering M.Tech program in Disaster Mitigation andManagement since 2012. The first research scholar joined the Centre in 2008; inthe same year the first consultancy project was accepted. Research conductedin the CoEDMM broadly covers all hazards and scope of the research extendsbeyond hazard science; vulnerability and risk assessment and management arepursued by researchers. In addition to laboratory facilities available withdifferent core departments and instrumentation Centre of IIT Roorkee, Centrehas also developed its own research laboratories catering to specificrequirements of researchers. Some of the notable sponsored/research projectsare earthquake early warning systems, vulnerability and risk analysis of geo-hazards in Himalayan regions, rehabilitation and retrofitting of heritagebuildings, seismic strengthening technologies and comparative assessment ofvarious retrofit techniques for unreinforced masonry (URM) school buildings inIndia, documentation of traditional earthquake resistant building technologiesfrom SAARC countries, wind tunnel studies for various real-life projects acrossIndia, bioremediation of accumulated pesticides, mitigation techniques ofcontaminated environments etc. In the M.Tech dissertation and doctoralresearch the Centre encourages to cover wider aspects of disaster managementand mitigation and risk resilience; e.g. micro-insurances for risk reduction, involvement of corporate in sustainable and holistic development, humanitarianlogistics during disaster relief and recuse, escape route. The Center drawsfaculty from the core departments of the Institute and therefore the resourcepersonnel associated are from diverse backgrounds such as architecture, planning, engineering, management,
