What Parents Should Know About Kik—From Common Sense Media’s Tweet Download

Kids and teens love using the chatting app Kik Messenger because it’s free, it’s popular with their friends, and they

can quickly and efficiently add cool Web content—memes, viral videos, images, and more—to their texts without

any message or character limits. The ability to easily interact with and share popular, trending items is a huge draw

for kids (whose lives pretty much revolve around the Internet). The other thing kids like about Kik is that you can

sign up with only a username; you don’t have to tie your account to your phone number, as you would with tradi-

tional SMS messaging. That lets you chat with a much wider range of potential chat buddies—whom you may or

may not know. It’s been connected to the alleged murder of a 13-year-old Virginia girl by a college student.

Parents also should be aware that inside the Kik app is a huge range of other apps, some of which cost money and

not all of which are age-appropriate. The additional content defies categorization: There’s Nearby, a Tinder-like

dating game that matches you to other users in your area; the New York Times, which offers access to top stories

as well as more in-depth articles for a fee; Funny Pics, a gallery of photos from the website Reddit; and Jam, where

you can read about musical artists, see photos, watch videos, buy merchandise, and of course, chat with other

fans. There also are lots and lots of games. Learn more about the pros and cons of Kik and how to help your kid

use it responsibly.

Teacher Requests for 2016-2017 If you would like to make a request for your child’s placement next year, you may pick up

a form in the office. Please remember that many factors are considered when students

are placed in a class. We try to honor as many requests as possible while trying to create

balanced classrooms. Requests may be picked up beginning April 15th and must be

received by April 30. Please note that we cannot guarantee staffing for next year; teach-

er moves are a possibility.

Michigan Student Test of Education Progress (M-Step)

This spring Century Park Students in grades 3rd - 6th will be taking the M-Step (Michigan Student Test of Educa-tional Progress). The M-Step has been designed to replace the MEAP test and is aligned with the common core state standards.

All of our testing will be completed web based on our school Chromebooks. If students have an external mouse or a set of ear buds that they prefer we encourage them to bring those in and use what they are comfortable with (the school will have extras).

We also encourage parents to make sure students get a good night sleep, eat a full breakfast, arrive to school on time, and bring a healthy snack!

M-Step test dates are: 5th Grade: April 12th, 14th, 18th, 19th & 20th—AM only (Math, English Language Arts, Social Studies) 4th Grade: May 11th, 12th, 16th & 19th—AM only. (Science, Math & English Language Arts) 3rd & 6th Grade: April 27th and 28th; May 3rd & 5th—AM only. (Math & English Language Arts)

Note: We are not expecting test results until fall 2016.

KINDERGARTEN OPEN HOUSE Century Park will hold it’s Kindergarten Open House on Thursday, May 12, 2015 from 6:00 - 7:30

p.m. Students and parents will tour the building and classrooms, take a bus ride and turn in registration

papers. If you have a child entering kindergarten, please plan on attending this open house. It’s a very

important meeting for parents & their incoming kindergarteners. Parents, we ask that you please make

this a special night by only bringing your incoming kindergarten student.

Please note that in order to cut down on your wait in the registration line, we will be accepting your

enrollment papers in the office prior to the open house night. Please bring your completed packet, along

with your student’s original birth certificate (the one with the county seal), two proofs of residency (a current utili-

ty bill addressed to your home address), current immunization records, hearing & vision screening forms (these

may be turned in later if not yet completed.) Please also note that the State of Michigan requires the 5-year boost-

er shots to be completed before the student begins school in the fall, even if the student’s 5th birthday occurs after

the start of school.

Our Spring Box Tops Contest will soon begin, but any of the box tops sent in prior to the contest will be counted so there’s no need to wait! The contest will run through Friday, May 20, 2016. Students can keep track of their class progress on the poster in the Commons area. The top 3 classrooms that collect the most box tops per student will win an ice cream party!!

Save and clip box tops from products like General Mills, Yoplait, Betty Crocker and more. A complete list is available at boxtops4education.com. Put your clipped box tops in a baggie or envelope with your teacher's name on the bag. Ask your family, friends, and neighbors to collect box tops for you and your class and earn money for Century Park! Please turn in box tops and bonus box tops in a timely manner because they do have an expiration date on them. These box tops have added up to several thousands of dollars over the past few years! This money goes to the FCC to help pay for our field trips!

Our Winter Contest, which was only 4 weeks in length, brought in $336.50. Mr. Austin’s classroom won Tim Horton’s doughnuts for 1st place!

This will be our last opportunity to turn in Campbell labels for education; they are discontinuing this program. Proceeds from these have been greatly appreciated by our school; however, the labels will not be counted as part of the box top contest. Last year, labels helped to purchase playground balls and also a gift certificate that the FCC has used for cost related to our contests.

BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION SPRING CONTEST

How often do you hear adults ask young children about whether they have a girlfriend or boyfriend at daycare or school? I hear it all of the time in my own family! Just yesterday, my husband was telling me about my four-year-old grandson’s “girlfriend” at daycare. I had to tell him to “stop” and consider how silly it was to talk about that with a little kid! He thought it was so cute, and of course he seemed pleased about it.

Adults ask small kids about that all the time—which conveys to kids that they should have an answer to

that question and that there should be a special boy or girl in their classroom.

Let’s just ask students about friends in their class and not worry about gender! Trust me; once they become 5th and 6th graders you (and we) are desperate to put off the extra drama that comes with de-claring a “boyfriend” or “girlfriend” at school.

I find that I need to gently joke with family members about not asking about girlfriends/boyfriends at school. I usually suggest a few alternate questions:

1. Have you read a good book lately? 2. What’s your favorite thing to do at recess? 3. What subject do you like best?

Do You Have a Boyfriend/Girlfriend?...Not the best question to ask elementary aged students!

On Saturday, March 12th , KDL Grandville sponsored "The Battle of the Books" tournament at Grandville Middle School. The biggest ever with thirty-two teams of 5th - 8th graders from all over Grandville gathering to compete in this reading competition. It was a great day full of excitement as students representing all of our Grandville schools (including Grandville Christian and Homeschoolers) spent the day testing their reading memory. Participants prepared by reading 6 books that were pre-selected by the committee, and they answered random questions about them on the day of the Battle.

Century Park had 2 teams this year, which was VERY fun!

Battle of the Books Results

A huge thank you goes out to Stacy O’Dell, along with Jen Aten, for planning a great Mother/Son event!

3 Mile Project, which offers a variety of activities that are fun for kids of all ages, was chosen for this year’s event. The event is scheduled for Tuesday, March 29th.

We are collecting money for the Father/Daughter Dance, which will be Friday, April 29th from 6:30-8:30 p.m. If

you need another invitation, they are available in the office; the cost is $8 per person. If you are available to help,

Former CPLC Student is 12-13 Year Old Hoop Shoot Midwest Champion

Congratulations to Tommy Gregwer, a Grandville Middle School 7th grader who is a CPLC Alumni. Tommy won

the Elks’ Hoop Shoot Contest for the State of Michigan and went on to win the Midwest Title, making 25 out

of 25 baskets!!! Tommy will compete in the National Championship on April 16th in Chicago.

March was Reading Month and our Scholastic Book Fair just seemed to be a perfect match. Thank you for

helping to get almost 1,000 books into the hands of our students last week! Thanks to the generosity of our

families here at Century Park, we earned just over $1,000 in Scholastic Dollars and $1,700.00 in cash profit.

Mrs. Peterson is still narrowing down her choices for more books and furnishings for our library.

Mrs. Peterson wants to send a special thanks to Suzette Gathen for her help in coordinating all of the volunteers this year and for

giving up so much of her time to help during the Fair; it was a struggle this year to get enough people for each day. Thank you to

all the parents who helped AND some of our former students who gave their time for our Family Nights during conferences. It’s

always nice meeting new parents!

We have been spreading out the reading fun throughout this year; ask your kids about the fun “Mystery Book Boxes” that have

turned up in the classrooms! Please be sure to keep track of your child’s reading for the Whitecaps Reading Club this month.

Your student earns 2 free tickets to a home game when they turn in their log at the end of March.

Middle School Sports Physicals The middle school will be hosting sports physicals in the spring. The dates are May 4 and May 10, 5-7 pm in the MS

Auditorium. The cost is $25 per child and will be good for the 2016-17 school year. You can pay with cash or check (made out to Dr. Diana Dillman).

To improve communication from school to home, we are rolling out a new notification system through Infinite Campus Messenger that can deliver critical information directly to your phone. You’ll no longer need to rely on the media for important alerts about school closings, delays and event cancellations. Please note that this is not an automatic process; you must opt in and choose your notification preferences: voice, text and/or email. Each parent who would like to receive notifi-cations must sign up. Emergency notices include school cancellations, delays and lockdowns. Priority and general notifi-cations include event cancellations, reminders of important events and news. Attendance, behavior and teacher notifications will only be used at a school’s discretion and may not be used at all schools.

Log in to your Infinite Campus parent portal. Go to “Contact Preferences” in the left-hand column. Check the boxes to indicate how you want to receive notifications in each category. You can

modify your selections at any time, and you can select as many delivery devices as you de-sire. Please update your email address if necessary. Contact your child’s school if you need to update a phone number.

If you opt to be notified via both voice and text, the system will first attempt to call your phone. If you do not answer or acknowledge the call, a text message will then be sent. Please note that depending on your phone carrier, data rates may apply for texts.

Nurse’s Note for April

Tornado Watches: Students will not be dismissed early during a tornado watch. Per-sonnel in the Administration Building and Transportation will monitor conditions. The school district will not begin an after school function during a tornado watch or warning. Activities that are underway when a watch is called will be allowed to continue and those underway when a warning is called will cease, and participants will be asked to take

cover. Tornado Warnings: Students will NOT be dismissed during a tornado warning even if it is dismissal time. If a tornado warning is issued, students will be ushered to predetermined shelter areas in their building. Students will not be dismissed until the Weather Bureau signals an all-clear bulletin.

Please do not call school during a tornado watch or warning. Early Dismissal: If there is a reason for school to be dismissed early (power outage, loss of heat,

weather, etc.), the following procedure will be followed:

Local radio and television stations will be notified and the information will be posted on their web

page. Tune in to TV stations WOOD TV8, WZZM 13, or radio station WOOD 1300 AM.

Grades K-6: Students will be taken to an alternate site until a custodial parent/guardian picks them up. At regular dismissal time, bus students who have not been picked up will be transported home.

Those students who walk will be transported back to their school and dismissed from there. Parents may pick up their own children at any time. If anyone other than a parent picks up a child, they must be named on the form that is on file in each school.

Severe Weather Policy

Parents:

Please note! Many children have asthma and allergy issues

related to spring pollen, allergens, and stings.

Please make sure that if this is the case for your child, that you provide the school

with the necessary medication forms and rescue medications. It is very difficult for all

concerned when a child is having problems such as difficulty breathing and their res-

cue inhaler or other medication is not available.

All medications should be brought to the school office by the parent. Forms are availa-

ble on the district website under “Medical” on the

Parent tab. Forms are also available in any school office.
