There is power in numbers. Laura Zander of Jimmy Beans Wool

approached us at the June 2011 TNNA tradeshow with an ambitious idea:to launch an industry-wide initiative committed to raising awareness of

heart disease in women. Here we are, just 12 months later, and Stitch Red(www.stitchred.com) is in full swing!Like many Americans, almost all of us here at Classic Elite Yarns have beentouched by heart disease, and we jumped at the chance to participate.

Until June 30, 2013, we are proud to donate 5% of the prots from threeof our purest red colorways to the Foundation for the National Institutes ofHealth in support of The Heart Truth:Magnolia in #5458 Ruby, Alpaca Soxin #1832 Cereza, and Silky Alpaca Lace in #2432 Garnet.

We are joined by some of the biggest names in the craft industry including

Sixth&Spring Books, the publisher behind the bestselling bookKnitRed, acollection of 30 red garment and accessory patterns and personal storiesfrom celebrity designers around the world. In this eBook, members of theCEY team share their own personal experiences and insights alongsidefree patterns designed in our Stitch Red yarns, including a completely new

    pattern in Silky Alpaca Lace.

There is a long history of heart disease in my family, so along with a general bent towards doingthe right thing, this cause is personal for me. Many in my fathers generation, my father includ-

ed, succumbed to the disease at a very early age. My generation is doing much better, but we

still watch for warning signs because of our genes.

Theres no easy way to prevent heart disease, you have to eat right and exercise. You can havesome fun with it though! I love to dance, but Im married to someone who doesnt share the

passion. Now I have a 6-year old granddaughter who loves to dance, and she has become mydancing partner! We turn up the funky music (her favorite) and just do whatever we feel like. Itsa blast! Everyone should try dancing with a 6-year oldits a very exhilarating experience!

My grandmother suffers from congestive heart failure, a condition that is often connected to

heart disease. My grandfather (her late husband) actually died of a heart attack in 1984 at theyoung age of 65.

Black women are 35% more likely to die of heart disease than white women. It could be lack ofinformation, a high cholesterol diet, or limited access to medical care that contributes to the

disparity, but advancing medical research and constant reminders in the media on diet andweight (Stitch Red included) are contributing to improving attitudes towards heart health, no

    matter what color you are.

My grandmothers most important words of advice for my sister, my brother and me? Watchyour diet, no matter how hard it is sometimes! A vigilant eye on her sodium intake allows my

grandma to keep going on cruises, hitting the casino with her girlfriends, and having fun at thehealthy age of 85!

Due to some of my past health challenges, I have become more aware of the food I put into

my body and try to maintain a healthy weight. I have altered my diet to include a lot of bright

vegetables which makes for a colorful plate (and my culinary school education denitely helpswith making them taste delicious)!

My daughter has fortunately picked up on my healthier food choices and both she and my sonexercise frequently. Theyre the ones I really worry about, as they have a strong history of heartproblems on their fathers side of the family. They unfortunately lost their father at the age of 55

to what is called a widow maker, similar to the attack T im Russert suffered. While I dont wantthem to live their lives worrying, I do want them to learn to live a healthy lifestyle. Luckily, greater

awareness and more prevalent information in the media and beyond (even in our little yarnieworld) remind us all to take care of our hearts!
