CRAFT: I used a Bamboo tablet and pen to draw thesimages within Adobe Illustrator. Using the brush tool in
Illustrator, I used different size brush strokes with
different directions of line to create different objects withonly 100 strokes. To create the images, the pen and tab
are used like a piece of paper and pencil, creating every
stroke that makes up the image in Illustrator.

COMPOSITION:For these drawings, the rst thing Iwant the viewer to see is the object as a whole. After
being able to recognize what the object is, the viewer
will notice the individual lines, or strokes, and the
directions they are in. Some of the drawings contain
strokes going in different directions to better
represent the true shape of the object while others
only contain one direction of line.
CONCEPT:At this point, the only message I amtrying to communicate is the object itself. The goal
of the assignment was to create ve objects that hold
liquid, like a bottle or cup.

CRAFT: Thies drawings are created the same way asthe previous drawings were-using the brush tool in Adobe
Illustrator, and drawing with the Bamboo tablet and pen.
Different size brush strokes were used to create different
thicknesses in the values of the grayscale. To create the
images, the pen and tablet are used like a piece of paper
and pencil, creating every stroke that makes up the image
in Illustrator.
COMPOSITION: I was focused on creating an objectappear three dimensional by only using different values
of black. The darker values created the shadows of the
object, while the lights made the highlights. The object
should be the rst thing the viewer sees, while the
different values within the object should be noticed
second.
CONCEPT: In these drawings I am trying tocommunicate the object itself, but only using differentvalues. For this assignment, I created ve cups and bowls,
only using value.

CRAFT:These color drawings were completed using thebrush tool in Adobe Illustrator and the Bamboo pen and
tablet. With the brush tool, I chose a hue and created at
least ve different values to use for the object. Using the
different values, I drew the object, using the different values
to capture the darks and lights on the actual object.
COMPOSITION: For these drawings, I really wanted thehighlights, or the spots on the object that reected the most
light (the brightest), to be the part of the object that draws
the viewers eye. From there, the contrast of the lights and
the darks will pull the viewers eye around to the rest of the
object, seeing the different values that compose the entire
object.
CONCEPT:Again, my main focus for the color drawings
was to realistically create the object. For these drawings,
I used a glass vase, a foam soap dispenser, and a large
push pin.

CRAFT:Just like the past drawings, these three texturedrawings were completed using the brush tool in Adobe
Illustrator and the Bamboo pen and tablet. With the brush tool,
I rst created a background layer of one number, consisting ofthree different values of the same hue. Then using the same
number as was in the background, I then chose a different hue
and created at least ve different values to use for the main
object. Using the different values, I then created an object, but
instead of using straight lines, the entire object is composed of
different brush stroke sizes and different sized numbers.

COMPOSITION:For all three drawings, I wanted the viewerto see the whole object rst, then the background made up
of a certain number. The last thing I want the viewer to see
is that the object itself is made up of the same number used
in the background.
CONCEPT:In these drawings, I was trying tocommunicate the object as a whole and have the viewerthink about whether or not the texture and the numbers
created goes with the actual texture of the object. These
three texture drawings are of a glass vase, a lightbulb, and a
foam soap dispenser.

CONCEPT:Through this image, I am mainly trying tocommunicate what the image is actually of. Just like this is
the rst time Ive used the pen tool in this class, this is also
the rst time I have another point I would like to communicate
with the viewer. Up until this point, I havent had an
opportunity to chose something that interested me or wasa part of me. I chose Elvis because he is one of my favorite
singers of all time, and I want to communicate that through
my image as well as allowing the viewer to recognize who my
image is of. Obviously, in order for the viewer to understand
that Elvis is important to me, I must be successful in
communicating who is the subject of my image.
This week we began using a different tool in Adobe
Illustrator. Up to this point we had been using only the brush
tool to create different objects, but this week we were
introduced to the pen tool. The pen tool might sound like it
functions similarly to the brush tool, but in actuality, it is quite
different. The pen tool allows you to create more controlled
shapes, either by plotting multiple points (done by clicking
where ever you want a point to be) or by clicking and
dragging, which creates a smooth curved line. The pen
tool gives the user an endless array of lines to use to create
whatever it is you want. To create my image I chose, I started
with the part of the picture that was farthest back. Once I had
determined which part of my image was underneath
everything else, I started there and I created every shape that
was created on the original image by the differences in hues.
In other words, I built my image up from the back, forward by
layering every shape on top of one another, allowing them
to overlap and come together to create the entire image. Not
long after I started, I noticed that the shapes added up very
quickly and was beginning to become hard to keep track of
what each individual shape was. To x this problem, I
organized the shapes into groups, or layers, and labeled each
one so they were easily identiable.
COMPOSITION:For this particular image, I wanted tocreate a realistic version of the original photograph, so I
simply duplicated the photograph. Because I wanted my
nished product to look as similar as possible, I did notrearrange the elements. I left everything the way it was in
the original picture. The rst part of the image I created that
I want the viewer to see is the guitar. This is because of the
particular photo I chose. Most of the image is composed of
darker hues, except for the esh and the guitar. However,
because the guitar has more intense, or saturated, hues
within it, that is where my eyes go rst on the original picture;
thats where I wanted them to go for my image. From the
guitar, the microphone guides the eye up to Elvis face.

shaperevisionRevision of the Shape Drawing
CRAFT: To revise this image, I used the original image Icreated of Elvis Presley using the pen tool in Adobe
Illustrator. To create the changes I made, I played around
with the gradient menu and tool, as well as the gaussian
blur effect. By changing the sharpness of the edges and
creating a smoother transition from one shade to the next,
it made my image look a little more realistic version of the
original photograph I used. While I got the guitar to
appear to have a smoother nish to it, it took a lot of trial
and error to get to that point. When I used the gaussian
blur effect, in order to create the look of a smoothtransition, the entire guitar looked out of focus. I tried the
blur with different radius lengths, but still could not come
up with a satisfactory look using the gaussian blur
effect. I then tried the gradient tool to achieve the smooth
transition on the guitar. Despite the irregular shape of the
guitar, I was able to come up with a fairly decent gradient
setting that smoothed the transition enough, and cover the
majority of the guitar.
COMPOSITION: I still have the same intentions with therevision of Elvis as I did the rst time around. My main
goal is to duplicate the original photograph as realistically
as possible. In order to do this successfully, I need to
keep the arrangement on the composition the same as the
photograph.
CONCEPT: The main purpose of me playing around withgradients and blurs was to communicate a more realistic
guitar with a smoother transition between hues and a more
subtle change in the shades within Elvis face. However, I
was only able to create a smoother look to Elvis guitar.

Shapevariations:Variations of the Shape Drawin
CRAFT:To create these variations of my orginial image ofElvis Presley, I applied different brushes and different color
schemes to the original image. In order to create the two
images with the orginial color scheme, but different brush
strokes, I used the brushes window to select two different
brushes to apply. The rst one I created, I found
and applied a more subtle brush to the imgae. After
creating that image, I then applied a more extreme brush to
the image. I then created two images that had different color
schemes to them. The rst, more subtle one, I used different
shades of blue (monochromatic) and the second
one has a more extreme color scheme to it. Once I had
created these four images, I then blended them together
to create an image with both a new brush stroke and color
scheme. To get the image to have the different colored
brush strokes, I went through each individual layer and
selected the color I wanted that particular layer to be (for
the stroke, not the ll), selected all shapes within that layer,
and applied the brush stroke to that layer. I repeated those
three steps for each of the fteen layers that make up the
entire image.

CONCEPT:The main purpose is to show that a realisticimage can easily be changed into an unrealistic one in
many different ways and that it is simple to change the
degree of realism within an image you create. As the
creator of the image, it is your own choice of how realistic,
or unrealistic, you want your image to be. And that can
easily be created by using different brush strokes, differentcolor schemes, and a combination of both.
COMPOSITION: For some of the variations, I wanted theviewer to notice the color schemes I used, and in others Iwanted the brush stroke to be noticed. After that, I wanted
the viewer to notice the subject of the image, Elvis Presley.

Contcrayon
This image is a unique one within all the compositionscreated in Drawing I because of the color paper that is used.
Black paper creates a whole new challenge when drawing.
Typically, when creating on the usual white paper, the
shadows need to be created, while the highlights can be
depicted with the paper itself. Until an image is created on
black paper, it goes unnoticed that creating shadows is not the
same as creating highlights. One needs to focus on differentareas of the composition; the darks when using white paper,
and the lights with black paper. When black paper is being
used, the shadows can be created with the paper, while the
highlights need to be created with the medium. This is why the
composition is mainly created with white cont crayon, with the
black cont crayon allowing me to make a smoother transition
between shades and sometimes taking away some of the
lightness in certain areas.
Using both white and black cont crayon, I created this image
of a bed sheet hung along a clothesline. I really focused on
creating the folds and creases of the sheet by the highlights
and shadows as opposed to creating individual shapes, like I
did with my Elvis Presley image. By recreating the highlights,
shadows, and midtones by following the direction of that
particular section not only creates the true shape of how the
sheet was positioned, but also adds depth to the image.

Sketchbook images give me freedom. I am in control ofevery aspect of these drawings: subject, medium,
composition (layout), style. In my sketchbook I put objects
that have some sort of signicance to me. Or sometimes,
they are just simpily things that I like. This is the case for
both of these sketchbook entries. To the left is an entry of a
glass of sweet tea. I drew this with charcoal at thebeginning of winter, when I was thinking of the warm
summer days, when sweet tea is almost always lling up
my cup. And above is a sunower, another wishful image
of summer, both in the name of the ower and the time they
are plentiful.

These two sketchbook entries are of common items foundaround a room; to be specic, a classroom. On the opposite
page, there is a close-up drawing of a pushpin. I really focused
on capturing the smooth transition of the shadows to show the
roundness of the pushpin. Not only does the intense shadow
accurately show the shape of the pushpin, but it also tells you
about the environment that the subject is in. In this case, the
light that the pushpin is exposed to is coming from the upper
right hand corner of the sketch. Oppositely, the light source on
the chess piece to the right is coming from the left. Where the
shadows, and highlights for that matter, are can tell youinformation about the objects surroundings.

I found this particular composition to be one of the moreinteresting pieces I drew for a few reasons. The rst reason
was because this drawing required me to draw the same
object multiple times to complete the piece. However, there
was a catch to this; each time I started a new
drawing of the tricycle, I turned my paper. This elementto the drawing added a level of abstractness to the piece.
When I drew the tricycle for the second time, I not only
changed the direction of my paper, but I also changed my
view of the tricycle. By the time I had completed three
drawings of the tricycle, it was hard to tell what the subject
of the drawing was because the three overlapped so much,
and the different directions added to the confusion. The
second reason why I thought this piece was interesting was
because of the use of positive and negative space. For this
piece, all of the negative space, or space within the
composition that does not make up the subject, were
shaded one of ve values ranging from darks to lights. It
was up to me to decide which negative space shapescreated by the positive space overlaps were what value.
Every part of the positive space was left white. To bring the
viewers attention to certain areas of the piece, I created
contrast with the white of the tricycle. In other words, the
negative spaces surrounding the parts I wanted to
emphasize I made the darkest value. By placing the darkest
values in only specic spots within the composition, I
controlled where the eye went.

This drawing has a story to tell. Every aspect of thedrawing has some sort of signicance in effectively
telling the story it holds. But what is that story? This
drawing entitled Dial Tone depicts the last interaction I had
with my Grandmother before she passed away.
My sophomore year of high school had come to an endand summer 2009 had just started. My travel volleyball
team was preparing to go to the biggest tournament of our
entire nine-month season-AAUs in Orlando, Florida. It was
a practice day the day she called to talk. There wasnt a
real reason she had called me, but she was excited that we
would get to see each other in September. I was just as
excited as she was since we were so close. Knowing that
I had to get ready for practice, I told her I had to go. We
exchanged the common goodbye of See you soon, and I
love you, but I had no idea that that would be the last time I
would ever get to talk to my Grandma.
Kelli Shaffer 37
August 21,2009. Just a few weeks before we wouldve
been able to see each other. This was the last day the
world was graced with my Grandmothers presence. She
passed away peacefully in her favorite chair right next to
the window that let her look out into her yard lled withnature.
I was completely devastated when I found out what had
happened that day. My rst thought was that I never got
to tell her goodbye. My memory immediately went back to
that phone call that I had cut short. At the time, I thought I
needed to get to volleyball practice. Looking back on that,
there isnt anything I wouldnt give to be back in that
moment so that I could tell her everything I wanted to tell
her, even if that meant being late or even missing that
practice.
This drawing is all about the one phone call I wish I couldhave back.
Dial Tone was made in memory of my Grandmother,

I decided to use graphite pencil for this drawing because Iknew that I would want to have detail in this drawing. Not
only was I more comfortable with graphite pencil, but it also
gave me more control than charcoal or cont crayon.
Almost everything in this drawing helps tell the story- from
the parts of the telephone itself, to the positioning of the
objects. The old telephone base on the right hand side
represents my Grandmother, and the receiver on the
opposite side represents me. The distance between the
base and the receiver shows the distance that was between
my Grandmother and me. The cord connecting the two is
a very important part of the drawing. Yes, it does connectthem together, but the cord has a more signicant meaning
than that. The cord transforms into a cardiogram when
following the cord from the receiver to the base. However,
as the cord gets closer to the base, the cardiogram begins
to weaken and eventually at lines, then transforms back
into a cord. The cord represents life on my end, and death
on the other end of the conversation.
The telephone itself isnt the only thing that adds meaning
to the drawing. I also placed the parts of the telephone
where they are for a reason. I decided to put the entire
telephone at the bottom of the composition to show the
heaviness I felt after I had learned that she passed away.As for deciding to not to include the entire receiver in the
composition, I chose to cut most of it out just like I cut the
conversation short. Not only does it say that the
conversation wasnt everything I wanted it to be, it also
gives you a sense that something is missing. To me, the
something that is missing is me not telling her everything I
wanted to.
Shading also plays a part in telling the story. The shading
adds a lot of meaning to the cord. When the cord is near
the receiver, the cord is very light, symbolizing life. But as
the cord moves further away from the receiver and closer
to the base, it gets darker and darker until it is completely
black by the base. The black represents the lack of life
and the mourning that came with that. The shading in
the background also follows this pattern. In the bottom
right hand corner, the background is the darkest it is bythe base. It is slightly lighter in the corner by the receiver,
but is not completely light like the cord. This is because
I wanted to add to the heaviness feeling. By keeping the
bottom portion of the composition with a darker
background, it pulls the eye to the bottom, where the
entire drawing is. As the background gets further away
from the telephone, it becomes lighter, with the lightest
section of the background in the corner above the receive
and darker above the base. This transition from lightest
to light, while more subtly, shows the transition from life to
death.
Once all these elements are combined, the story thatinspired this drawing comes alive. Let the whole story be
told and dont cut it short.
Once all these elements are
combined, the story that inspired
this drawing comes alive.
