Rod’s Ruminations
Hi to all, Seemed to be a week of stand-
in’s and replacements, thanks to
VP Trevor for running last
week’s meeting (and this weeks
too!) and to Sandi for coming off
the bench at the last minute as
‘guest speaker’, although I’m
disappointed I didn’t get to
learn about ‘’EndTrachoma by
2020 and how we as a Club might
help.
The Club also welcomed visiting
Rotarian Sandra Wilkinson all
the way from Bradford West
Rotary in the UK. Her visit
serves as a timely reminder that
when you’re away for work or
holiday there’s usually a Club
nearby that is worth a visit. The
Club Locater App in your phone
is great for finding clubs on the
move - like the dinner meeting
I’ve found for tomorrow at the
hotel I’m staying in!
I am very pleased to advise that
the District 9800 Governor
Nominee (Designate), to serve
as Governor in 2020-2021, will
be Past President Philip Archer
(Tricia), nominated by the
Rotary Club of Southbank. We
congratulate Philip on his
selection.
A reminder there’s a Board
meeting this week and members
are welcome to sit in and
observe the meeting. We’ll also
follow up with a full report the
following week.
Thanks, Rod

The Chimney project takes a leap forward.
The Chimney the exciting visionary project of Veronica & Hein Otten is moving ahead with a building permit imminent.
The project to date has consumed considerable time and expense & is being supported by a number of interested
parties.
Former Club Rotarian Bruce Adams has assisted with engineering & structural consultancy while Bruce Trethowan one of
Australia’s foremost heritage architects has produced drawings & conceptual imaging. Coincidently Bruce was a
schoolmate of mine at Scotch College.
Last week, along with Veronica & Hein we met on site with State Member of Parliament for Oakleigh, Steve Dimopoulos
to overview progress & to discuss other important issues. Steve was blown away with the project & assured us that he
would endeavor to provide us with whatever support was required to ensure the project was brought from concept to a
reality. Once the building permit has been issued the real work commences. There will be opportunities for all of us to
lend a hand & work together to bring this project to fruition.

Thank you to the following companies for their ongoing support………….
RC Eaglehawk Great Aussie Camping Swap Meet
The Rotary Club of Eaglehawk are pleased to announce that the Inaugural Camping Swap Meet is to be held
on the 24th and 25th March. Aimed at all things camping – fishing/tents/boats/cooking utensils, you name it,
and you will either be able to sell it or buy it! Is your shed full of unused camping gear? Are you looking to
upgrade and need to make some space? Then this is your answer, book a site or simply come along to browse
what the stall holders have on offer.
For additional information and online site bookings simply go to www.greataussiecampingswap.com.au or
find us on Facebook - www.facebook.com/greataussiecampingswap
Reasonable site fees and an easily accessible venue, makes for a great weekend!
WORKING BEE: OSWALD’S ANGLICAN CHURCH
Last week Walter, Chris and Lyle, together with a
member of the church, erected a security fence at
St. Oswald’s Anglican Church, High Street, Glen Iris.
This fence now completes the establishment of a community space (Wominjeka Reconciliation Garden) for quiet reflection built on the disused tennis courts adjacent to the church. Our club also contributed to the cost of the fence, and are investigating other potential involvement with the church. Special thanks to Chris for working under painful conditions after hurting his back on the previous weekend.
BBQ: HENLEY ON THE YARRA
Another sterling effort from the Club’s BBQ brigade in
running a BBQ for the Henley On The Yarra rowing regatta
down by the rowing sheds by the river on Saturday.
Thanks for Chris (for assisting getting the trailer loaded with supplies), Andrew, Lyle, Richard, Rod, Michael Bennet, Lyndon and David K for their hard work. A day of fun, plenty of food, friendly banter and good weather (thankfully) was enjoyed by the team, even a free massage! Over a $1000 raised to add to the Club’s coffers to do good in the world. The highlight for the Bush Bashers (Lyndon, Andrew, Richard) was watching another SUV trying to reverse/turn a huge trailer with 2 rowing boats – nearly ended up in the Yarra!’
