Now that the primary election is complete, we turn our attention to the special congressional election for the U. S. 8th Congressional District. On June 7th, voters will have the opportunity to choose their representative who will fill the unexpired term of former Congressman John Boehner. Currently this office is vacant as John Boehner resigned from congress in 2015. Although the individual who wins this election will serve in this office in 2016, he or she must run again on November 8, 2016 for the next 2-year congressional term. We encourage you to stay educated on the various positions held by these candidates and vote on June 7th.
The Chamber will continue to keep you updated on this important development in our region. The successful candidate in this race could be representing our district for many years to come. To see a list of candidate activity for the 8th Congressional District, please visit www.butlercountyelections.org.
In what seems to be happening on a yearly basis these days, officials from the company joined community leaders in February to celebrate the grand opening of a 30,000 square-foot expansion of its high performance shock-absorber facility. Fabian Schmahl, President and CEO of thyssenkrupp Bilstein, spoke at the event stating that they have been hiring new employees every year for the past five years. Hiring will continue through 2016. Schmahl also stated that the Hamilton facility makes the “most advanced products in the industry but also has the newest manufacturing technology available at the Hamilton facility.”
This $26 million expansion, is their third expansion since 2011. In 2010, thyssenkrupp Bilstein had 160 employees in the local area. Today, employment stands at 684. In addition, by the end 2016, the Hamilton plant footprint will be nearly 300,000 square feet. Five years ago it occupied about 120,000 square feet locally.
At the event, Patrick Bass; CEO of the parent company, thyssenkrupp North America stated, “we have no plans to stop now, or to slow down. We want to put our foot on the accelerator even harder, and utilize this product to its fullest extent. Right now, we can’t grow fast enough to the demand of the customers side for our business.” He also praised the
company’s community partnerships and thanked those partners who have assisted the company over these last several years.
We were appreciative when Fabian Schmahl recognized the Chamber for our assistance during his time in Hamilton. According to Schmahl, each year the Chamber has provided some specific assistance to them which has helped grow their business. The partnership works both ways as Mr. Schmahl has
served on the Chamber Board since 2009 and has added his expertise on issues important to the Chamber. In addition, since his graduation from the Chamber’s Leadership Hamilton program, Bilstein has had at least one employee in the class every year. Bilstein employees are contributing back to the community and we thank them for this!
Finally, we were encouraged to hear that the second phase of this latest expansion was announced at his event. I was particularly happy when Patrick Bass; CEO thyssenkrupp of North America concluded his comments saying, “We’ll continue to push and drive, and support the capital-investment needs for Fabian to grow his business in Hamilton because that’s critical, not only to the community, but also for us at the company. Congratulations to thyssenkrupp Bilstein and all their employees. We look forward to partnering for years to come!
