2 ISSAQUAH | Chamber Directory 2015-2016
As the saying goes; ”People do business with people they know.” The Greater Issaquah Chamber of Commerce wants you to get to know us and our members and we hope you find this publication both helpful and informative.
The chamber board, staff and volunteers take great pride in providing members and the community with a competitive advantage through bold actions, innovative solutions, and value added services. Businesses that belong to the Chamber of Commerce are devoted to the local community.
As they thrive, so do local schools, churches and non-profits through the number of jobs they create, the amount of money and time they put back into our local economy, and the goods and services they provide. In turn, our role is to support local businesses by creating a strong local economy and representing business to local government.
The Greater Issaquah Chamber of Commerce hosts a variety of events that benefit our community. We have the joyful task of producing Salmon Days, a weekend event that showcases not only the return of the salmon, but the active and robust community we call home.
Please enjoy our Resource Guide and Directory. Keep it and use it as a reminder of everything Issaquah and this region has to offer. We are a great community, and the Greater Issaquah Chamber of Commerce is honored to be a part of it. THINGS TO DO IN ISSAQUAH
In the past 100 years, the Issaquah School District has grown with the city of Issaquah.
Only 15 years ago, the district served less than 9,000 students in 13 schools.
Now, nearly 19,000 students are enrolled in the 2015-2016 school year, which was a 4 percent increase from the previous year.
There are more than 20 schools in the district, which span 110 square miles in seven municipalities, according to the district.
The Issaquah School District Board of Directors authorized a 2015-2016 budget with revenues and expenses of $217.3 million and $220.2 million, respectively — both figures 12.6 percent greater than what was budgeted the prior year. The difference will be taken out of district reserves, expected to sit at just under $19.6 million by the end of this school year.
The Issaquah School District is the 15th largest in the state of Washington. In all, the district is made up of 15 elementary schools, five middle schools, three comprehensive high schools and one alternative high school.
The district is currently looking at putting a bond measure on the spring 2016 ballot to fund two new elementary schools, a middle school and high school, while expanding several existing campuses.
A bond committee recommended a $518.5 million bond measure to Superintendent Ron Thiele in May.
In the last 10 years, the district consistently ranked in the top five state school districts on state testing, according to the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction.
It holds an on-time graduation rate of 93 percent, according to the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Issaquah is home to a wide range of health care providers, from neighborhood doctors to intensive care providers.
Swedish Medical Center’s Issaquah campus, located at 751 N.E. Blakely Drive, is undoubtedly the city’s largest provider of health care services. The hospital has capacity for 170 beds and specializes in natal and pediatric services, orthopedics and oncology — or “babies, bones and cancer,” as Executive Director Dr. Rayburn Lewis puts it. In regards to babies alone, Swedish Issaquah has become the busiest center for child delivery in Swedish’s network. The hospital additionally supports other specialties like cardiology, neurology and
physical rehabilitation. Swedish Issaquah has
become an important hub for the Issaquah Highlands and, as of this writing, King County Metro is working on a proposal to extend the no-fare Route 200 bus to the hospital’s doorstep.
UW Medicine operates a UW Neighborhood Issaquah Clinic at 1455 11th Ave. N.W. The out-patient facility offers primary care, specialty care, medical imaging and mammography, rehabilitation, a pain clinic, testing and treatment for a number of conditions and partner services with the Swedish Cancer Institute.
Overlake Medical Center operates a primary care clinic in the heart of Issaquah, at
5708 E. Lake Sammamish Parkway S.E. Overlake Medical Clinics Issaquah offers same-day appointments and employs medical staff with experience in pediatrics, women’s health and chronic disease management. The clinic is adjacent to Overlake’s Urgent Care Clinic, allowing for the latter operation to immediately connect patients to follow-up care providers.
The Washington State Department of Commerce recently designated Issaquah an Innovation Partnership Zone for sports medicine. The zone was created to “increase the synergy of sports medicine-related businesses to create jobs and spur innovation.” That means designated Economic
Development Manager Jen Davis Hayes will work to create partnerships between research entities, workforce trainers and private sector practices. One such private sector business in Issaquah is Proliance Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine, a surgical practice located at 510 Eighth Ave. N.E. For hospital and other medical listings see page 23.

ISSAQUAH HISTORY
Depot Park by Tiffany Howard
HistoryNestled amongst the Squak,
Cougar, and Tiger Mountain sits the City of Issaquah with a rich history that leads back to the mid-1800s. Issaquah has not always been known by its current name, but instead was first known as “Squak Valley.” In 1892, the area was incorporated as Gilman to honor Daniel Hunt Gilman, a prominent resident of Seattle who founded the railroad. However, in 1899 residents of Gilman petitioned the state to change the towns name to Issaquah and won. The origin of the name is the Native American word “ishquowh,” which Snoqualmie tribal leaders say means “the sound of water birds.”
The first white settlers arrived in the area in the 1860s. Coal was discovered shortly
after, but it was too expensive to ship across the lakes by barge. The area became a major producer of hops. Hops were picked by Chinese and Native American laborers, and then shipped to Seattle for brewing. In 1889 the railroad finally came to Issaquah, and a coal mining boomtown was born. Soon there was a bustling town with boarding houses, hardware stores, and saloons. Logging also became a local industry.
Coal mining began to dwindle in the 1930s and logging also began to slow down. The town’s population remained around 1,000 until the late 1940s when the first bridge was built over Lake Washington, making Seattle more accessible. It was then that Issaquah began to grow in size. Today there are more than
33,000 residents. Revisit Issaquah’s history
by visiting Gilman Town Hall Museum, Issaquah Depot Museum, and the Issaquah Valley Trolley. Gilman Town Hall was built in 1886 and includes an exhibit titled “In This Valley: The Story of Our Town,” which features artifacts and photographs illustrating Issaquah’s history. There is also a cement jail behind the museum that was used from 1914 through 1930.
The depot, built in 1889, is also now a museum that features exhibits on industrial revolution, communication, travel, and development in Issaquah. While you’re there, don’t miss an opportunity to catch a ride on the vintage trolley. The trolley runs Saturdays and Sundays, May through September.

Real Estate Issaquah is one of Family
Circle’s ‘Best Towns for Families.’ In the August 2015 issue, Family Circle recognized Issaquah for its great schools, abundant family-friendly activities and strong sense of community.
“Surrounded by three large mountains near the tip of Lake Sammamish, this town 17 miles southeast of Seattle is a destination for family-friendly excursions,” Family Circle notes in the piece.
Issaquah, nicknamed Trailhead City, is centered within the Issaquah Alps — Cougar, Squak and Tiger mountains — a destination for hikers, paragliders and other outdoors enthusiasts.
The magazine also lauded the achievements of the Issaquah School District and the Issaquah Schools Foundation.
“Issaquah’s schools are active and healthy as well,” the piece continues. “For the past decade, the Issaquah school district has consistently ranked among the top five in Washington on state assessments.”
Whether looking for an apartment or a beautiful family home, Issaquah offers some beautiful opportunities for your next home. Issaquah is home to more than 33,000 people and has options for everyone from single professionals to retirees.
The number of households in this area is estimated to change from 7,630 to 13,139, resulting in an increase of 72.2% between 2000 and the current year, according to the Economic Development Council (EDC) of Seattle and King County. The EDC also stated that over the next five years, the number of households is projected to
increase by 5.6%Issaquah Highlands
and Talus are some of Issaquah’s largest housing developments that still continue to grow. Both award-winning communities are conveniently located near the I-90 freeway.
Award winning community Issaquah Highlands includes more than 3,300 homes and was included in Sunset Magazine’s 2014 “Best Places to Live in the West.” The development includes two community gardens, more than 30 parks – with every home designed to be less than a mile from a community park. There is also more than 1,500 acres of land for hiking and biking. The Highlands includes a business district and a cinema, and a vast array of shopping and dining opportunities.
Talus housing development offers housing to fit
everyone’s needs – from single family homes and condos to apartments and a resort-style retirement community. Talus is located within close proximity to downtown Issaquah, a park ‘n ride and public transportation.
Timber Ridge at Talus is an award winning retirement community - and a second phase of the facility is currently under construction, adding 145 apartment homes to the community. According to the facility website, Timber Ridge is the first senior living community in the nation to be awarded Silver LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) by the U.S. Green Building Council. Other Issaquah retirement communities include Providence Point, Bellewood Retirement Apartments and University House Issaquah.

Q&AWhat was the first major crop grown in Issaquah?
ANSWER: Hops
12 ISSAQUAH | Chamber Directory 2015-2016
Photo Credit: Courtesy of Issaquah Chamber
Issaquah is home to more than 19,000 jobs and has grown its workforce by more than 1,000 jobs since the beginning of 2013, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Many of those jobs are in the city’s thriving retail and service sector. But Issaquah also has become a growing business center, attracting corporations like Costco Wholesale and SanMar.
Meanwhile, the 2012 Central Issaquah Plan revised zoning and incentives in the city’s core to encourage greater mixed-use development, with development permit applications throughout the city increasing prodigiously since that time. Here’s a look at the companies and organizations that employ the greatest number of people in Issaquah:
1) Costco Wholesale CorporationIs it any surprise that the
second-largest retailer in the United States would be Issaquah’s biggest employer?
Costco Wholesale Corporation transitioned its headquarters from Kirkland to Issaquah over a two-year period from 1994 to 1996. Since then, the Costco home office has become a fixture within Pickering Place, which also includes a well-trafficked Costco warehouse store.
In the fall of 2014, the city of Issaquah and Costco, with support from the Greater Issaquah Chamber of Commerce, finalized a deal to allow the corporation to build out its headquarters by an additional 1.5 million square feet in exchange for contributing to an expansion of the road network in north Issaquah. The expansion will allow Costco to bring 6,000 additional people into its headquarters, so it’s safe to say the company will continue to sit
comfortably at No. 1 on Issaquah’s employment rankings.
2) Swedish Medical CenterSwedish Medical Center’s
Issaquah campus opened in 2011 as the lone building on its portion of the Issaquah Highlands’ Grand Ridge. The Grand Ridge has seen an explosion of construction since then.
Swedish’s initial investment in the Issaquah hospital was already huge — including in-patient surgery, a childbirth center, a pediatric in-patient unit, a medical and surgical in-patient unit and an intensive care unit - and it has only grown with the surrounding neighborhood. Swedish Issaquah quickly became the second most productive child delivery center in the Swedish system and in 2014, the hospital earned certification for 80 additional beds.
And Swedish Issaquah’s leadership doesn’t plan to slow down anytime soon. Executive Director Dr. Rayburn Lewis told
the Issaquah/Sammamish Reporter in October 2014 that the hospital had long-term plans to continue adding doctors and services. Eventually Swedish Issaquah will construct a building devoted to its administrative services on Northeast Blakely Drive as it makes room for medical expansions.
In 2015, Swedish Medical Center signed a new contract with SEIU Healthcare 1199NW establishing minimum staffing standards modeled after California state law and a $15 minimum wage for nurses, technicians and other health care workers.
3) Issaquah School DistrictPerhaps no employer in
Issaquah has grown with the city like the Issaquah School District. The district employed nearly 2,100 people during the 2014-2015 school year - a growth of 200 employees from just four years prior.
As more families have moved to Issaquah and the surrounding Sammamish Plateau and Renton Highlands seeking a public education for their children, the Issaquah School District has been forced to respond by growing its staff and expanding its campuses.
Last year, the district added permanent space for 260 additional students as part of renovations to Apollo Elementary and Issaquah Valley Elementary. Current construction on a new Issaquah Middle School campus and renovations to Sunny Hills and Clark elementary schools will add 645 seats for students.
The district’s board of directors is currently at work on a more than half-billion dollar bond measure to finance construction of a new high school, middle school and two elementary schools, rebuild Pine Lake Middle School, upgrade Beaver Lake Middle School and expand six existing campuses and the central administration office.

Issaquah Community – Issaquah has recently been named a “Best Burb” by Sunset Magazine and one of the “Best Towns for Families” by Family Circle Magazine. Population Incorporated in 1892, Issaquah now encompasses about 12 ½ square miles and is home to more than 33,000 people. Much of Issaquah's growth has occurred since 1990, thanks to regional growth, local annexations, and a housing boom led by construction in the Issaquah Highlands and Talus urban villages. In step with the continued expected growth of the Seattle Metropolitan area, Issaquah is forecasted to grow by 2.6% on an annual basis through 2030. Issaquah is a family-focused community boasting one of the highest-performing school districts in the state and an adult that is generally affluent and well educated. The average household income is estimated to be $121,321, compared to $73,355 for the United States. Approximately 61% of the adult population has earned a bachelor’s degree or higher, compared to 31% throughout the United States. The forecasted growth also brings opportunities. In 2012, the city approved The Central Issaquah Plan. The plan will guide the long-term evolution of the city’s roughly 1,100-acre commercial core from a collection of retail strip malls, parking lots, and underutilized properties into a more sustainable urban area that will meet the community’s needs for environmental protection, jobs, housing, recreation, and rapid transit. This plan is Issaquah’s opportunity to create a vibrant urban center, while protecting current neighborhoods, and preserving its authentic heritage and picturesque natural surroundings. The plan will also protect Issaquah’s high valued qualities including: clean air, clean water, proximity to skiing, hiking, boating, fishing, and a multitude of other outdoor activities. All this is combined with convenient transportation, a low crime rate, quality schools and friendly people that create the backdrop for a great life.

Shopping& Dining
Issaquah is home to an array of shopping and dining experiences. Whether strolling through Historic Gilman Village, exploring Front Street, or visiting the Issaquah Highlands, visitors and residents will find everything from antique stores to modern retailers and casual dining to sophisticated wine bars. Oh, and be sure to “go green” at Recology, while visiting Gilman Village. The store offers products that encourage waste reduction and also sells items you would never imagine were made from recycled materials.
Issaquah is quickly becoming a hub for art and culture and one example of that is artEAST, a non-profit dedicated to making art part of the community. artEAST not only showcases art exhibits but also offers a variety of workshops and recently broke a Guinness World Record for most contributions to a paint-by-
number. The Issaquah food
scene offers an unlimited array of international and modern cuisine. Foodies will enjoy everything from classic American food, tastes of the Orient, fresh seafood, to South-of-the-border spices.
Issaquah also brings food and culture together at one of the few remaining authentic drive in restaurants; Triple XXX Root Beer Drive-In. Perhaps you are more in the mood for something sweet? Be sure to try Boehm’s Candies and Chocolates for European style hand-dipped candies and chocolates. The sweet shop sells truffles, chocolate covered caramels, nut clusters, even chocolate covered licorice. Boehm’s has been part of the Issaquah community for more than 50 years.
It could take a year or more
for a person to taste their way through Issaquah. Not sure what you are in the mood for? Take a stroll through Gilman Village, Issaquah Highlands, or the Historic Downtown District on any given night, and you will be able to choose from dozens of restaurants serving up fabulous, farm fresh, unique cuisines.
