September Business Breakfast

Wednesday, October 23rd, 7:30 - 9:00 a.m.

The Rhinecliff

Executive Director, Jody Miller will discuss how the Mediation Center makes an

impact in the community and include its newest programs, the Anti-bullying

Initiative and the Coalition on Elder Abuse in Dutchess County.

The Mediation Center of Dutchess County was founded 30 years ago as a vital

community resource for resolving disputes as an alternative to litigation. Since

then the Center has developed a reputation for creating cutting edge and

collaborative programs that help people think more clearly, communicate more

effectively, understand the other and make decisions to carry out next

steps. Whether serving families, businesses, schools, or organizations, the

Center provides mediation, training and education to help people address conflict

constructively.

We will also hear from Wilderstein and their plans to renovate the amazing

Carriage House.

Thank you to our sponsor, Vicki L. Haak, CFP, Ameriprise Financial Services

TOPICAL BIOMEDICS, INC., SIGNS ON WITH CVS PHARMACY

Topricin® Foot Therapy Cream to be Carried in the Retailer’s Foot Care Section

Rhinebeck, NY, September 19--Topical BioMedics, Inc., the makers of Topricin® natural pain relief healing products, has connected

with CVS Pharmacy, a leading national drug retailing chain, to carry its Topricin Foot Therapy Cream.

Topical BioMedics is a research and development leader in topical natural biomedicines for pain relief. The company’s product line

includes original Topricin Pain Relief and Healing Cream, Topricin Foot Therapy Cream, and Topricin for Children. The natural for-

mulas have been awarded a patent for the topical treatment of pain associated with fibromyalgia and neuropathy, and are safe for dia-

betics.

Topricin Foot Therapy Cream has been specially formulated to address pains associated with foot and ankle pain and injuries, includ-

ing gout, heel spurs, bunions, and sports injuries such as Plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, and shin splints, as well as neuropathic

pain. “We are delighted that Topricin Foot Therapy Cream has been chosen by CVS for inclusion in its Foot Care Section,” says Lou

Paradise, Topical BioMedics’ president and chief of research. “It is estimated that more 20 million Americans suffer from neuropathy,

and 60% of all diabetic patients experience neuropathy in their feet, which can be painfully debilitating and greatly impacts their qual-

ity of life. Because our formula is patented for the treatment of pain associated with neuropathy, it offers a safe, effective option for

people suffering from both diabetic and chemo-induced neuropathy. Having it on the shelves in CVS will certainly make our product

more available to those in need.”

cines. Topricin products are growing in popularity and are safe for diabetics and the entire family, including pregnant

As a pilates teacher and owner of Rhinebeck Pilates, I always recommend pilates as an incredible form of exercise for lengthening and strengthening the entire body. Doing pilates in a studio with a certified pilates teacher is, of course, the best way to practice pilates. But did you know there are a few pilates-based principles and stretches you can do at home or in the office that you can benefit from immediately?

Try these ideas when you find yourself in the following situations:

1. You’ve been at the computer or on the phone for hours, and now your back aches. Pilates principle that will help: -Visualize within your spine is an elevator, with each vertibrae as a “floor”. Draw your naval in and up within the eleva-tor, so your core muscles are helping to lift your spine up and grow you taller. Use this “core connection” to lift the weight of each of the vertabrae off of each other. The trick is to keep this type of core connection at all times- which is not easy and that’s why we practice pilates. However, simply doing this throughout the day and reminding “the naval to go in and up along the spine” can be very good for poor posture and fatigue, especially as the day goes on.

2. You’ve been driving a lot (commuting, driving the kids everywhere, etc) Pilates based stretch that will help: This is best done with a theraband (which can be purchased at Target, or any sports store) but can also be done with a long, rolled up towel or a yoga strap. Stand up, and hold the theraband in both hands, with hands slightly wider than the shoulders and the theraband straight across. Lift arms up and bring the theraband overhead. The further back you take the theraband, the more stretch you will feel. Be careful of going back too far, especially if you have any type of shoulder issue.

This is a chest opener and upper body stretch. Take nice deep breaths and do it a few times per day!

3. You’ve been walking and standing a lot, and the arches of your feet hurt. Pilates-based move that could help: -Often times loosening up the calf muscles can quickly relieve arch pain. Here’s an easy way to stretch the calves: Wearing sneakers (not bare feet), stand up close to wall. Keeping your heel on the floor, put the ball of your foot and your toes up onto the wall. Then, lift your body weight upwards, to lengthen the calf muscle up. Take it gently to make sure its not too much strain in your arch or achilles tendon.

These are some simple ways to recreate principles, stretches, and moves that we do in pilates classes at Rhinebeck Pilates. If you find yourself in pain often or with an aching body due to everyday life habits, I highly suggest taking a pilates class regularly to train your body how to relieve itself from pain and be able to continue to do all the things we need to do in life!

The ChamberLine 11 Take the Indie Impact Study Survey! This October, locally owned, independent Hudson Valley retailers and restaurateurs are invited to participate in a comparative study that will show how much more money stays in our local economy when people shop and dine at locally owned, independent businesses. Re>Think Local, a new nonprofit organization in the region, has partnered with the American Booksell-ers Association and research firm Civic Economics to conduct the survey of businesses in Dutchess, Ulster, and Orange counties. The study will provide valuable information for our local independent busi-ness community and hope that all eligible retailers and restaurateurs will participate. The survey should take about 30 minutes and can completed online any time between October 1 and 25. Results will be announced in November and will help make a strong case to Hudson Valley consumers that choosing to support local independents not only feels good, it keeps a lot more money in our local economy. Questions can be directed to Re>Think Local's outreach director at [email protected], 845-790-8110.
