Scholars among us!

The Financial Aid Office handed out more than 300 scholarships and student awards ranging from

$250 to $2,500 during the annual Scholarship and Donor Ceremony on May 13. In all, more than 240

students received awards. Before the ceremony, student honorees were given the opportunity to

meet, and personally thank, individual donors and representatives from the scholarship awarding

organizations during a reception hosted by the College of the Canyons Foundation in the Performing

Arts Center lobby. Congratulations to all of our 2015 scholarship award winners!

Cul-de-Sac Literary Magazine – May 29

The Literary Magazine: Cul-de-Sac released its eighth volume on May 29.

- Students read their original, published works and discussed their art and photographs.

- Every spring semester, cul-de-sac is created cover to cover by English 122 students, who learn every aspect of literary production.

- The magazine features fiction, poetry, drama, creative nonfiction, photography, art and graphic novel panels.

- My hat is off to them for another outstanding publication, and my thanks to Alene Terzian for her expertise and guidance.

Nursing Honor Society Induction – June 3

The induction ceremony for the Nurses Honor

Society - Alpha Delta Nu – was held in the UCEN

Lobby on Wednesday evening, June 3.

This is a national honor society for Nurses and

was established for the first time at COC last

spring.

It recognizes the academic excellence of

students in the study of Associated Degree in

Nursing, promotes scholarship, and encourages

the pursuit of advanced degrees in nursing.

Joan MacGregor and Sue Albert were guest

speakers.

This year, 39 nursing students were inducted into

this honor society while over 80 of their friends

and family were present to celebrate with

them.

Nurses Pinning Ceremony – June 4

The event was held in the PAC at noon on

Thursday, June 4.

58 nurses received their pins on stage that

afternoon as they completed their ADN

degree.

This is always an amazing event, and the 300

friends and families of the graduates are very

supportive and proud of the accomplishments

of our nursing students.

Congrats to the Nursing Department and all of

the graduates!

And thanks to Jerry Buckley for the graduate address!

MLT Graduation – June 4

Held in UCEN 258 on the evening of June 4, 12 students from the MLT program took part in their pinning ceremony, marking the completion of their training and advancement into this essential branch of the medical health-care industry.

Graduates received their Associate in Science degrees in MLT and will be eligible to sit for the national certification exam to become licensed by the California Department of Health Services Laboratory Field Services Branch.

In recent years, MLT graduates have gone on to start careers in a variety of health-care settings, working for organizations and agencies such as Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, Quest Laboratories, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, and Verdugo Hills Hospital

Approximately 100 family members and friends were on hand to celebrate with these students who completed the course and are on their way to a new career!

Graduation – June 5 The class of 2015 had 1,462 students who

petitioned for graduation, representing a

nearly nine percent increase from the

class of 2014.

This class represented 103 majors, 83

students graduated with two degrees and

83 veteran graduates.

After the Graduation Ceremony, we held a reception for Doreetha Daniels.

Doreetha, accompanied by many family members, received a number of certificates and commendations from the SCV City Council, Chancellor Brice Harris, and representatives from our local legislators.

In addition, three major news stations were on hand, and the stories reached across the nation that night!

FBLA Students Excel at National Conference

More than 1,600 of America’s best and brightest college students traveled to Chicago to

showcase their talents as Future Business Leaders and to vie for the opportunity to win more than

$81,000 in cash scholarships.

• Future Business Leaders of America-Phi Beta Lambda (FBLA-PBL) held its National Leadership

Conference on June 24-27.

• Participants attended to enhance their business skills, expand their networks, and participate

in more than 55 business-related competitive events.

• Eight COC students placed in the top ten in the nation in their categories, including two national champions:

Paul Dezso took first place and a $700 scholarship in the category of Business Law

Jonathan Maxwell took first place and a $700 scholarship in the category of Cyber Security

Robert Brennan, Lindsey Stoneman, and Sandy Sy took second place and a $100 scholarship in Strategic Analysis and Decision Making

Allison Silver and Lindsey Stoneman took fourth place and a $100 scholarship in Business Decision Making

Miranda Gerda, Johnzel Iniba, and Sandy Sy took tenth place in Management Analysis and Decision Making

2015 All-USA Community College Academic Team Shines

Two COC students were recently nominated as members of the 2015 All-USA Community

College Academic Team, which recognizes two-year college students who “demonstrate

academic excellence and intellectual rigor combined with leadership and service that

extends their education beyond the classroom to benefit society.”

Over 1,700 students from over 1,000 community, technical and junior colleges competed for

the 2015 All-USA team.

From COC, we honor Diego Ochoa-Bolton and Mackenzie Thurston and congratulate

them for all their accomplishments!

Upward bound students move forward One of the graduating seniors in Upward Bound was awarded the 2015 Student Leadership

Conference Scholarship.

Only five of the awardees were from a community college, and Teresa Marcial, a COC student,

was one of them!

In addition, 100% of the students eligible for graduation are doing so this June and all of them are

continuing onto college.

We have students who plan to attend CSU Long Beach, CSU Northridge, UC Santa Barbara, Pierce

College, and COC.

Congrats to these students and to Belinda Acuna, the Director of Upward Bound for COC for her

dedication to making this collaborative effort work to the benefit of our local high school students!

Upward Bound Summer Banquet will be held on Friday July 31 from 6-9pm at East P.E. 116

HOPE for Nepal – May 20

On Wednesday, May 20, several student groups joined

together to held raise relief funds for the victims of the

Nepal earthquakes.

• The Associated Student Government, International

Studies & Programs, Model United Nations, TEDx,

Sustainability Center and many departments on

campus were involved.

• Participants were asked to donate $2 or more to write

messages of hope on colorful pieces of material which

became a visual imitation of the well-know Tibetan

prayer flags.

• They were hung in Honor Grove for all to see.

• The event raised $320 toward this effort, plus an

additional $1100 in donations received online.

SCV Economic Development Corp – July 2On July 2, the Board of Directors of the SCV EDC met in the UCEN where a

variety of topics were covered:

The new Board member recommendations are:(John Arvin – Woodridge

Capital; Marisol Espinoza – So Cal Gas; Todd Stevens – California Resources

Corp; Lance Williams – Williams Homes)

Relaunching the SCV Startup Weekend (creating communities and building

companies in a weekend!)

Committee and Task Force Reports were discussed.

The report from Holly Schroeder (Business Blitz Update, LAEDC Strategic

Planning Session, World Trade Center Tour, Economic Snapshot, Events

Calendar) and

Congressman Steve Knight was our special guest.

This is a great group of driven, dedicated folks who are doing wonderful

things for the Santa Clarita Valley!

Summer Institute! The popular career exploration-themed Summer

Institute at COC offered three sessions running from July

13 to 24.

• The Summer Institute is open to students entering the

seventh, eighth and ninth grades, and provides hands-

on career exploration and learning opportunities in a

variety of areas and subjects.

• Enrollment fees range in price from $225 to $360 per

child per week, depending on the length of the

selected track.

• The sessions included: Session 1: July 13-17 - Video game design; robotics;

photography; architecture and landscape design; sports

medicine; welding

Session 2: July 13-23 - Allied Health; special effects and

movie making

Session 8: July 20-24 - Video game design; how it’s made;

robotics; photography; architecture and landscape

design

Battle of the Bands – May 31 Six bands competed this year for a $500 prize. Congratulations to

Scissor hand Syndrome!

They ranged from indie-pop to punk to good old rock 'n roll!

As if band’s battling weren’t enough, 11 cars competed and a classic

hot rod stretch limo won the “Peoples Choice Award”!

LACCD/COC Collaboration Meeting – June 2

You will recall that we traveled to LACCD and

met with representative from their colleges on

January 14.

On June 2, we hosted a luncheon for 24 new employees and their

Electronica Musique Concert – June 3

The COC Music Department, under Bernardo Feldman’s direction, hosted the Electronica Musique and Multimedia Concert.

Held on Wednesday, June 3 in the Black Box Theatre

Our Music Technology classes prepare students with no prior knowledge in computer generated music to use the computer to compose and produce their own compositions for use on the web, CD, and video.

This was another example of our talented students and one of the many ways we help to showcase their work.

Crafton College Visits UCEN – June 8

Crafton Hills College sent representatives to acquire information about our University Center as they are interested in opening a similar facility.

Dr. Barry Gribbons and Ms. Cathy Ritz provided a tour of the facility

The team met with me immediately following the tour and I provided a historical overview of the University Center concept and information about how we got the money.

PAC Sneak Peek – June 9

On Tuesday night, the PAC Sneak Peek was held

to reveal the 2015/16 COC Presents Season to the

PAC donors, seat-namers, VIPs and local media.

New COC PAC Director, Lindsay Gambini was

introduced at the event. She comes to the

PAC with more than 25 years of experience.

Dr. Carmen Dominguez (Dean, Fine &

Performing Arts) and Ms. Gambini showed

their DVD “sizzle reel” to the attendees which

highlighted the performers for the 2015/16

season.

KHTS/Carl Goldman was on hand at the event

as well.

It should be a great year in the PAC!

Digital Media for Educators Conference, June 11-12

COC and our Deputy Sector Navigators (DSN) hosted the second statewide

Digital Media Educators Conference on June 11 & 12 at the UCEN

Two-day conference - designed to connect faculty with industry

260 participants had registered, and 65 colleges from around the state had

presented.

o Keynote presentations by Diane Domeyer – Executive Director of The

Creative Group, a Robert Half Company and Ben Bradley from Burning

Glass

o Featured tracks in: Internet Identity Management Digital media Communication Interface and Usability Design Digital Media in Business Educator Tips and Techniques

Business Alliance Breakfast Meeting – June 23Held in CHCS-201, approximately 40 business and industry professionals came together for our

second meeting of the BUSINESS ALLIANCE.

The morning was great and contained some great discussions and ideas on topics such as:

Education Alliance Continues to Move Forward

The EDUCATION ALLIANCE (which last met on April 28) is

planning to meet again in late August or early September,

where we will continue our discussions on:

building the awareness of what is available at COC,

changes and enhancements to our curriculum,

updates on career pathways and

ways to improve communications between all the local

districts and COC.

i-CuE Opens Their Doors For Lunches

Cindy Schwanke and the Culinary staff and students

opened their doors for lunch reservations to the public in

mid-June.

• Reservations can be made online for Thursday afternoons

with seatings at every half-hour from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm.

• A menu of choices is available and covers an appetizer,

soup, salad, main course and dessert.

• The students are getting a great experience in food

preparation, presentation, front and back of house

service, and all around restaurant awareness and

knowledge.

• If you haven’t had a chance to go, make a reservation

on one of the following available dates:

Sculpture Update – July Five new sculptures were added to our current Simi Dabah collection displayed

throughout both campuses, bringing the total to 41 pieces of art.

This is the largest collection of permanently installed Dabah sculptures anywhere.

University of Nevada saw our collection and has acquired some for their two campus’s- Las Vegas and Nevada

ISP Visits – Week of July 13 College students from various Universities throughout Mexico were given a scholarship to

attend an English immersion program. You may recall that COC hosted 95 of these

types of students last November.

On Monday, July 13, 47 new students arrived at COC.

They were enrolled in credit ESL 071 and 081 and will attend classes daily for a month.

They are also participating in a language and cultural experience class through

Community Ed that includes cultural lectures, movies and excursions.

Summer Enrollment and FTES

We have met the target for the number of FTES we

expect to be paid for in 2014/15.

• Total FTES to be claimed on the 14/15 annual report

is expected to be about 15,300.

• Additional FTES produced will be applied to 15/16.

Total Summer 2015 FTES to date is 1,520 as of

7/17/15 We expect an additional 20 FTES from positive

attendance.

Therefore, we have met our targets for 14/15 and

summer carried forward into 15/16.

Total enrollments for the summer were over 12,000

with 545 course sections offered.

Board Governance Workshop at Valencia Campus – September 9 2015

Miriam Carver, the leading policy governance theorist will be exploring principles

and applications of the model.

This model enables boards to focus on the larger issues, to delegate with clarity,

to control management’s job without meddling, to rigorously evaluate the

accomplishment of the organization and to truly lead its organization.

Since opening her governance consulting practice in the early 1990s; Miriam has

consulted with boards of directors in the USA, Canada, Great Britain, the

Netherlands, Etc.
