Preparing for the Journey Ahead

Hi and welcome to Chaplaincy.

Chaplains are an integral part of our communities, whether in a hospital, a nursing home, a school, a workplace, a correctional centre, or the Australian Defence Force. Chaplains are in great demand for their presence and support.

You can make a difference in the lives of those around you by becoming a Chaplain. Outlined below are three study pathways as brought together by Chaplaincy Australia and delivered through Alphacrucis College.

Chaplaincy Essentials The Chaplaincy Essentials cover foundational subjects that are required in both the Certificate IV in Pastoral Care and the Diploma of Ministry (Chaplaincy).

The units covered in the Chaplaincy Essentials help students understand the role of a chaplain, gain specialist communication skills, and deal-ing with loss and grief, to name a few. A State-ment of Attainment is received if no further study is pursued, however students who finish here must work under the supervision of a qualified Chaplain.

Certificate IV Pastoral Care CHC41112 The Certificate IV in Pastoral Care is our most popular award. Chaplaincy Essentials units are covered first before moving on to the remain-ing units which make up the Certificate IV in Pastoral Care. This award is nationally accredit-ed, and is the minimum benchmark as set by the Australian Government for candidates to work as Chaplains. Financial assistance is not availa-ble on this award; however payment plans can be arranged with Alphacrucis College upon

application.

Diploma Ministry (Chaplaincy) 10036NAT Moving to the Diploma of Ministry (Chaplaincy), this award covers two different aspects with one purpose. The Chaplaincy Diploma units are more focussed, cover more depth and are academi-cally articulated in comparison to the Certificate IV. The second aspect of this award is the ministry units. These additional units are great for those who are in ministry with a Christian focus, but who would also like to become a qualified Chaplain. The purpose behind the diploma course is to equip, empower and develop quality leaders in Chaplaincy. VET FEE-HELP is available; however students must meet the entry requirements and pre-requisites before applying.

Students who successfully complete the Chaplaincy Essentials or the Certificate IV in Pastoral Care or the Diploma of Ministry (Chap-laincy) can become accredited Chaplains with Chaplaincy Australia and/or recognised within your own church denomination.

Continue with me as I explain how the Intensives are structured.

Intensives and Online Learning

Chaplaincy Essentials and Certificate IV in Pastoral Care:

The units within the Certificate IV in Pastoral Care are delivered through three-day face-to-face intensives.

• Thursday to Friday, 8:30am to 5pm• Saturday, 8:30am to 3pm

These intensives are scheduled and planned at least 6 months in advance ensuring there is plenty of notice before they commence.

We have had many students realise their own grief from life changing experiences. The class room provides a safe environment to learn and share whilst the trainer maintains direction and support.

All students of Alphacrucis College receive access to the online learning platform called Moodle. Moodle is where all assessment work is submitted, all unit information is found, and communication between peers and tutors is encouraged. The Trainer will explain how to navigate and find important information on Moodle at the intensives.

Intensives 1 and 2 cover the Chaplaincy Essentials Intensives 3, 4 and 5 cover the remaining units in the Certificate IV in Pastoral Care. These must be completed in consecutive order, beginning with Intensive 1.

Chaplainy Units:• Chaplaincy Essentials – delivered through Intensives 1 and 2 • 5x Chaplaincy diploma units delivered through 4 intensives

Ministry Units:• 5x units in total• Study online through Moodle or• Face to Face at the Parramatta Campus.

Please go to www.ac.edu.au for more information regarding scheduled intensives and dates.

Coming up next, I will take you through the practical placements.

Chaplaincy Work Placement

The Chaplaincy Essentials, Certificate IV in Pastoral Care and the Diploma of Ministry (Chaplaincy) are all part of the Vocational Education and Training framework, or VET as we call it. Our VET courses provide students the opportunity to demonstrate the theory learned in the classroom, through hands on experience in the field whilst studying.

The diploma course requires a Chaplaincy work placement as part of the Chaplaincy Essentials units, plus a ministry placement for the ministry units. More information is available through Moodle upon enrolment.

Students are encouraged to seek chaplaincy work placement in the areas of chaplaincy they are most interested. Whether that is in a hospital or aged care, primary or high school – you may split the practical hours across multiple sites to gain a broader experience. It is the student’s

“Being able to pray for people at the hospital has been a highlight of my chaplaincy placement. I loved visiting the patients and just being there with them and hearing their stories. I loved encouraging the patients and bringing up God when I saw an open door. Chaplaincy is a ‘presence ministry’ so I really learnt how powerful my presence is. I also learnt how to listen more intently and how to reflect the patients feelings back to them.” Chantal Giorgini Certificate IV Pastoral Care
