Chaplain’s Message

Dear Fellow Knights:

It has been

quite a year, here at

Blessed Sacrament,

as we have celebrated

the one hundredth

anniversary of our

present church build-

ing. And the Santo

Nino council has played a huge part

in our celebrations! Reuben

Mercado, the past grand knight of

our council did us proud. He and his

wife Cecile were gift bearers at our

centennial Mass at 10:00 a.m. on

Sunday, June 26, 2005. They

brought to the altar our council’s

latest Star Council Award plaque

symbolizing, among other things,

the tremendous involvement of

Santo Nino Council members in the

liturgy of the parish. Later that day

Reuben Mercado gave a beautiful

message during the program at the

Hotel Saskatchewan Radisson Plaza.

Once again our Canada Day

Mass and brunch on the church lawn

was a huge success. There were a

lot of firsts at the Mass: 1. We had

the most R.C. M. P. cadets we have

ever had at a Canada Day Mass –

seven. 2. We had the most Regina

was held on July 15-17 at the Douglas Park Tennis Courts

with ten pairs competing. Finals were postponed to July

feated Dan Vetter and Dylan

Toupal in three sets. In the B

finals, Mario Melendres and

Mark Sison won over Gregg

Ravasco and Richard Lopez.

Alejandria, Jess Feliciano,

and Gregg Ravasco ran the tourney.

Installation of Officers The new set of officers for the Columbian Year 2005-

2006 was installed by District Deputy Claude LeFebvre on

June 19, 2005 at the Blessed Sacrament Church. Pictured

below were the new officers led by GK Ed Alejandria and

Council Chaplain Emmett Morrissey together with Coun-

cil member Fr. Raymundo Rodriguez who is pastor of St.

Mary’s Church.

Blessed Sacrament Centennial Council participated in the celebration of the

Blessed Sacrament Church Building Centennial held on

Sunday, June 26, 2005 with a Holy Mass followed by a tea

and program in the Regency Ball Room of the Hotel Sas-

Eucharistic ministers and mass servers during the Mass.

GK Rio Mercado gave his greetings and a presentation to

Parish Pastor Emmett Morrissey at the banquet. A Memo-

rial Book with a page on our Council was distributed at

the tea. The Centennial Hymn composed by Deacon Bob

Williston was played during the celebration. Emcee Pat-

Chaplain’s Message (continued)

City Police officers we have ever had at a Canada Day Mass

– three. 3. We had the largest congregation that we have

ever had at a Canada Day Mass – 750. I would like to con-

gratulate the Santo Nino Council on the marvelous brunch

you provided following the Mass. A good time was had by

all! I’m sure that Edgardo Alejandria, our newly elected

Grand Knight, was justifiably proud of the involvement of

our council in the Canada Day celebrations. May I wish our

council continued success in all endeavours.

Message from our Grand Knight

Brother Knights,

I would like to thank you for the

trust that you have given me to be your

Grand Knight. I promise to do my best

to live up to your expectations.

I wish to congratulate all the

officers and service directors who I

believe will give their best efforts to

serve our council and community.

Special thanks to our Chaplain, Fr. Emmett Morrissey

for all the support he has given us.

I was welcomed by one of our big activities in the

Columbian year, namely, the Canada Day Celebration. It

was a huge success: great attendance and perfect

weather. Thanks to all who volunteered with the cook-

ing, serving, setting up the site and cleaning up after-

wards.

The Council family picnic, dubbed ‘Olympicnic’,

was fabulous—lots of food, games, kids and good fun.

Your executive is gearing up for more activities.

Lastly, I thank you for your support and friend-

ship to me and my family. With your help, I look for-

ward to another successful Columbian Year.

Yours in Christ,

Edgardo ‘Laly’ Alejandria, GK

Our Lifeline

Every council in our order depends on the growth of

membership even if minimally. Hence, it is important to have

first degree exemplifications to bring in at least the quota set by

Supreme. It is hoped that our recent Membership Blitz followed

by exemplification on Sept. 11 will infuse some new blood. We

have invited parishioners who “believe in the importance of in-

vesting time in friendship, the Church and helping others” to sign

up. In the six years of our existence, this is the first time we

have formally invited the Blessed Sacrament parishioners to get

involved with our Council. We have thanked them and espe-

cially their Pastor and our Chaplain, Fr. Emmett, for welcoming

us into their midst and lending us great support and inspiration.

Indeed, they are our lifeline!

Membership Blitz

Sunday August 28 was the day Council had its

membership blitz. A display of pictures showing coun-

cil activities pertaining to church and vocations, commu-

nity, family and youth was set up at the entrance of the

Blessed Sacrament Church. There was also a table with

hand-out literature on the Knights of Columbus. Several

Council knights were on hand to answer questions. PGK

Seb Koh made a two minute pulpit announcement after

Communion at the 10 a.m. Mass.

Council has scheduled an information night for

recruits on Tuesday, Sept. 6 and first degree exemplifi-

cation on Sunday, Sept. 11, both at 7 p.m. at the Blessed

Sacrament meeting hall.

Fr. John Lawrence Folk was born

on July 9, 1927 on the family farm at Bil-

limun, Saskatchewan to Jonas Folk and

Theresa Gerein. Sixth of nine children, he

went to Pinto Dale public school and com-

pleted grades 11 and 12 at St. Peter’s Col-

lege in Muenster. He went to Normal

School, became a teacher and taught at

Whitewood and Vanguard.

Fr. Lawrence had an interest in the priesthood as a boy

reading stories of missionaries in the third world. In 1947 he

went to the seminary in Edmonton for a two-year course in

philosophy. At the behest of Bishop Joseph Lemieux, he

went to St. Boniface so he could minister in French. After

four years of theology, he was ordained at St. Martin’s

Church at Billimun in 1953. He served in Swift Current,

Herbert, Success, St. Louis, Rockglen, Killdeer, and Wood

Mountain.

In the early 1960s, Fr. Folk had a hand in building St.

Michael’s Church in Swift Current where he said the first

mass. In 1975, he had a course on family life and marriage

counseling in Ottawa obtaining a master’s degree from St.

Paul’s. Back at Gravelbourg, he worked with families with

problems, marriage preparation and marriage encounters.

He served as pastor at St. Joseph’s parish at Vanguard, St.

Michael’s at Swift Current, at Shaunavon, at Maple Creek,

and at Gull Lake and had missions at St. Anne’s at Lac

Pelletier, Climax, Eastend, Consul, and Thompkins.

In 2000, he became pastor at St. Mary’s Church in Re-

gina. He celebrated his 50th Anniversary of his ordination to

the priesthood in 2003. Due to poor health, he retired to

Martha House the same year. He now resides there. Fr.

Folk became a Knight in 1951 and served our Order in all

parishes where he was assigned. He became a 4th degree

Knight in the late 50s.
