    EAST JORDAN What a dif-

ference a year makes. The East Jordan Red Devils got

the 2013 football season kickedoff in a positive note as they

rolled to an opening nightshutout of the Traverse City

Christian Sabers 55-0 in front of

a good size crowd at Boswell sta-dium.

The Red Devils struggled to a 0-9 record last season, got things

    rolling early and often.

Things are going to change, starting tonight, East Jordan

coach Allan Peterson said priorto the contest. This group has

worked so hard and are deter-mined to show it.

It didnt take long, as senior

    halfback Noah Bacchus took the

Red Devils third play from scrim-mage 37 yards up the home side-line to pay-dirt, giving EJ a quick

6-0 lead with 11:04 remaining inthe first quarter. The point after

    attempt was no good.

Following a deep kickoff, TCChristian found themselves

buried deep in their own terri-tory pinned at the TC 11-yard

    line.After two fumbles (both recov-

ered by the Sabers) TC Christian

running back Carson Camp wastackled by a host of Red Devils in

the End Zone for a safety, givingEJ a 8-0 lead.

The ensuing free kick by theSabers fell into the willing and

capable hands of Bacchus onceagain at the EJ 46, the deter-mined senior once again, found a

gap and turned on the jets and itwas a footrace to the goal line

that he just wasnt going to lose

as he bolted 54 yards for anotherRed Devil score at the 9:05 mark

    of the opening quarter. Dustin

Hejka would tack on the extrapoint attempt as he split the up-

    rights for a 15-0 lead.

East Jordan would add twomore scores over the remainingnine minutes of the first as sen-

ior Tim Schut and junior Bailey

Sargent both would scramblethrough open holes created by

the offensive line and cross thegoal line for touchdowns.

Michael Suess would add a con-

version run on the score by Sar-gent for a 29-0 cushion as they

    headed towards the second quar-ter.

The second quarter wouldopen with both teams going four-

    and-out on their first possession,

then EJ would march 27 yards onseven plays capped by a Jordan

Peterson 1-yard run for a 35-0lead with just under four min-

utes remaining in the half. Thepoint after attempt was no good

and the score would remain the

same as the teams headed intothe break.

The second half started muchlike the previous possessions for

the Red Devils as Bacchus wouldrace 30 yards for another touch-

down and a following a Hejka

extra point, the score showed 42-0.

Dallas Downing and Ben Wal-ton would add rushing touch-

downs in the fourth quarter, along with another Hejka extra

point, for the final tally and a 55-0

Red Devil victory.Offensively for East Jordan,

Bacchus led the way with 69yards on three carries; Sargent,

Schut, and Walton would add sig-nificant yardage as well as the

Red Devils piled up 220 yards on

the ground. On the defensive side of the

ball, Schut led the way with eighttackles, Walton and Sargent

    added six apiece, while Oscar

    Scheier chipped in with five.

East Jordan would force sevenfumbles in the contest, recover-

ing three as the defense held TCChristian to -92 yards total of-

    fense.

The Red Devils will now take

their 1-0 record along with thatearly season momentum and

turn their attention to Hillmanas they play host to the Tigers on

tough competition and thats justwhat they ran into at the Cadillac

    Tournament on August 29.

Boyne came away with a few

    wins, but earned more experi-

    ence against some tough foes.

In pool play the Ramblers fell

    to Coopersville 25-17, 24-26, 14-16;

    lost to Cadillac 15-25, 25-22, 9-15;

This was a tough tour nament,

there were no weak teams here,

    Rambler coach Casie Parker said.

We played well all day, but not

our best and when you play

teams like this, you have to be on

    top of your game.

Kylie Hicks with 48 digs, 55 kills

    and nine blocks; Paige Hornbeck

added 49 digs and 21 kills and

always had a strong program and

is ranked in the top 10 class B

    every year.

    Coach Parker also noted that

ST. IGNACE After aback and forth first half,

    Charlevoix kept pluggingaway and eventually

reeled off 20 unansweredsecond half points, lifting

    the Rayders to 20-0 vic-

tory over St. Ignace incoach Ron Bindis debut

as the head man on Au-gust 29.

With the victory, itmatches the total games

    won by the Rayders last

season. It was also thefirst win over St. Ignace

in four years. It was (is) pretty excit-

ing for all of us, coachBindi said. The kids

    played well, they could

have folded a couple oftimes when things didnt

go our way, but theydidnt, they kept doing

what they needed to andearned the result.

    With the game still

scoreless just about mid-way through the third

quarter, Rayder KeNenBorths scooped up a

Saints fumble and rum-bled 35 yards for the first

score of the game and a 6-0 Charlevoix lead. Borths

    seemed to have a magnet

for the ball on defense ashe recovered three fum-

bles in the contest.Sam Hovie capped a

nine play drive in thefourth quarter as he

plunged in from 1-yardout for a Rayder score

    and a 12-0 Charlevoix lead

as the extra point attemptwas no good.

Hovie would then un-leash a 52-yard dash to

the end zone late in thefourth quarter, around

    the three minute mark;

Luke Klinger would addthe two-point conversion

    to make it 20-0 Rayders.

We had a couple of bigplays that kept drivesgoing in the fourth quar-

ter, one being a 22-yard re-

ception by Nate Moonfrom Klinger on fourth

    and two, coach Bindisaid.

Klinger would finishthe game 4-of-9 for 53

    yards through the air,

while adding 77 yards onthe ground on 19 at-

    tempts.Hovie gained 84 yards

on nine carries and twoscores; Austin Putman

    had two receptions for 29-

yards, and Moon onecatch for 22.

We had a fumble andsome penalties and the

    kids just kept working

and rebounded fromthem, Bindi noted. We

were looking for hustle, pursuit, adversity and at-

titude, he added, Wemade some mistakes,

struggled some, but theyare correctable, overall

    we are very pleased with

    the kids effort.Defensively for

Charlevoix, Borths fin-ished with 13 tackles,

Shane Sutherlandrecorded 10 and two sacks

    and had a fumble recov-

ery as the Rayders forcedsix turnovers on the

    night and also showed

their grit and toughnesswith a pair of goal linestands.

    Sam Eakes and Hovie

each added eight tackles;Bryan Noirot had six and

    Putman added an inter-ception.

St. Ignace is a goodfootball team, Bindi

    added. We played with a

lot of hustle and a lot ofheart, they left every-

thing on the field, I could-nt be prouder.

The Rayders (1-0) playhost to an always tough

    Maple City Glen Lake

    MAPLE CITY The

Ramblers for the most partoutplayed the Lakers in

    every facet of the game,

only to have some untimelyturnovers and miscues

spoil their season opener asthey fell to Glen Lake 27-13

on August 29 in a rematchof their Division VI playoff

    contest from last fall.

Boyne nearly doubled theLakers in total yardage for

the contest, 357-207, but theuntimely turnovers didnt

    make things any easier for

    the Ramblers against a

tough opponent.Boyne City scored first as

junior quarterback CoreyRedman found his favoritetarget from last season,

Maceo Vroman, for a 35-yard touchdown reception

for a 6-0 Rambler leadGlen Lake would then

    score 20 unanswered points

before Boynes Malik Smithrumbled in from five yards

out early in fourth quarterand with Dalton Gardner

adding the point after; theRamblers trailed 20-13.

    3. RAKE ThE lEAvESRaking leaves is no ones idea of

fun, but its important to remove

fallen leaves from your lawn as soon

as possible. Dont wait until all the

leaves have fallen from the trees to

start raking. If you do, the leaves

will become wet from rain and

    morning dew, stick together and

form an impenetrable mat that, if

left there, will suffocate the grass

    and breed fungal diseases.

An alternative to raking leaves is

to use a lawn mower with a collec-

tion bag or vacuum system. This is-

effective if you have a large yard

    with many deciduous trees. Regard-

less of whether you use a rake or a

lawn mower, be sure to remove the

leaves before they turn into a soggymess.

    4. FERTilizE FoR FuTuRE

gRoWThMost lawn experts agree: If you

fertilize your lawn only once a year,

do it in the fall. The reason? Grass

leaves grow much more slowly as

the weather turns cool, but the

    grass roots and rhizomes continue

to grow quickly. Rhizomes are thehorizontal plant stems that lie just

beneath the soils surface; they pro-

duce the blades of grass above and

    the roots below.

A fall application of fertilizer de-

    livers essential nutrients for the

grass to grow deep roots now and to

keep nutrients in reserve for a

    healthy start in the spring.

    Wait until mid-to-late fall, then

apply a dry lawn fertilizer to all

grassy areas; dont miss any spots.

You could use a crank-style broad-

cast spreader, but for optimum cov-

erage, consider using a walk-behinddrop spreader. It takes a little

longer, especially on hilly yards, but

a drop spreader provides the best

way to apply an even, consistent

    layer of fertilizer.
