Cherkasy has an ancient history. People settled here about 800 years ago. But the town was ruined many times so few ancient buildings remain.

Cherkasy region is closely connected with the name of T. Shevchenko. Here in the village of Moryntsi he was born on March 9, 1814, and was buried in Kaniv. Shevchenko visited Cherkasy. Today the monument to great poet is in the town Theatrical Square.

The hard social and national oppression caused the appearance of cossacks in Ukraine. The first Cossack settlement was set up in the XVth century and Cherkasy became their stronghold in the struggle against the Polish gentry, the raids of Turks and Crimean Tatars.
