Cleanup Act of 1994 – Enacted October 22, 1994– Congressional concerns on solid waste open

dump sites located on Indian lands

– Purposes of Act • Locate open dumps on Indian lands

• Assess the relative health and environmental hazards

• Provide financial and technical assistance to close

open dumps to comply with Federal and/or Tribal

standards

Tribal Open Dumps Background– Indian Health Service (IHS) assigned to

conduct inventory of all open dumps on Indian lands

– Submit annual report to Congress– IHS to also identify level of funding needed to

bring dumps into compliance and develop solid waste management plans
