FROM THE OLD

The area around Chevron Apartments offers a fascinating insight into London’s history. The Old Kent road was first built by the Romans and became a popular route for pilgrims on their way to Canterbury. In the Victorian era, it became a hub of industry as the Grand Surrey Canal formed a channel for the transportation of coal and raw minerals to Bermondsey’s warehouses, tanning yards and leatherworks.

A few decades on it became the stomping ground of a young Charlie Chaplin and in the 50s and 60s, boxing legends like Henry Cooper and Mohammed Ali trained above the Thomas A Becket pub where David Bowie would later rehearse as Ziggy Stardust.

Old Kent Road was the first square on the Monopoly board. Now it’s to be one of the first in a new wave of regeneration. The mayor has designated it as an opportunity area for growth over the next 25 years, which includes the proposal for a new underground station.

Uniquely positioned between boutique filled Bermondsey and artistic Camberwell, with its network of warehouses, mews and Victorian terraces, the area is already starting to explode into life.

Chevron Apartments showcase a striking blend of architectural styles, reflecting the unique heritage of the site. Established during the 19th century, the buildings at the rear of the complex originally housed workshops and warehouses. The more recent extension at the front offers authentic industrial features that hint at its commercial past, including a loading bay which forms the grand entrance to the building.

Each apartment has a bespoke arrangement to accommodate the structure, fabric and period features of the original building. The industrial architecture provides spacious dimensions throughout the complex (with many apartments exceeding the minimum space standards for London). Where possible, heritage features are retained, including warehouse style windows, open plan layouts and exposed brick walls.

INNER BEAUTY

Old meets newEach apartment boasts a unique internal layout and period features. The light and airy ambience of the space is complimented by neutral finishes, making it the perfect blank canvas for your own style.

The external features of the building are preserved and celebrated. A double height entrance makes use of the architecture of the former loading bays, featuring industrial accented finishes in wood, glass and aged metal. One of the internal courtyards is paved with factory-style brickwork whilst a second offers a calm pebble lined oasis, where light can play across the water of a reflecting pool. A tranquil aesthetic of modernist design is balanced against heritage features for a blend of new and old.
