For those attending the Surajkund International Arts and Crafts Mela 2015, this year Chhattisgarh has a

lot more to offer its visitors, as compared to its previous presentation in 2005. Apart from a lineup of

cultural performances, the theme offers the reconstructions of several attractions. Displays of

handlooms, artefacts, kiosks offering Chhattisgarhi cuisine and a fashion show conducted with The

National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), New Delhi are just the tip of the iceberg at the

Surajkund Mela 2015. The fashion show titled “Amber Mandaar – Vastra from the Divine Land”, aims to

celebrate the indigenous and exquisite textile resources of Chhattisgarh.

Tourism Minister, Shri Ajay Chandrakar has resolved to enhance Brand Chhattisgarh through tourism.

“Tourism is all about experiencing ecology in its entirety, be it about culture, nature or legends. Through

our outreach at Surajkund, we wish to share a glimpse of the beauty that Chhattisgarh is adorned with.”

Shri Santosh Mishra, MD, Chhattisgarh Tourism Board, expressed his conviction that this exhibit would

play a crucial role in pushing up tourist visits to the State, which stood at just over 23 million last year.

Here's a list of some of the Chhattisgarh exhibits you can check out at the Surajkund Mela 2015:

Madai Mela: This ancient, traditional festival is celebrated by the tribes of Kanker and Bastar regions to

mark the beginning of the sowing season in Chhattisgarh. Devotees invoke Gods and Goddesses at a

common place in the village following a long procession.

Malhar Gate: The gate to Pataleshwar Temple, Malhar is a remarkable example of Ratanpur’s ‘Kalchuri’

art style. Built in 11th century, both sides of this gate depict river Goddesses Ganga and Yamuna with

pitchers perched on their respective vehicles.

Terracotta Art: A speciality of the Bastar, Raigarh and Mandia regions of Chhattisgarh, terracotta figures

hold a special place among the locals and the tribes. In many villages of Chhattisgarh, terracotta figures

are placed on the borders to drive away evil spirits and assuage unseen forces.

Bastar Art: A prominent form of tribal art, these figures depict rural lifestyle of the tribal community,

incorporating pastoral scenes with the farmer as the main focus.

Devi Jhula: The temples located in the tribal villages of Bastar region are popularly known as ‘Gudi’.

Inside the premises of the temples, there is a wooden swing balanced by 12-16 ft tall wooden pillars

made from the trees of mango, wood-apple or willow.

Wall Painting: Godna, a traditional form of making tattoos by the tribal women of Chhattisgarh is now

being painted on walls and fabrics. Every painting has cultural value.

Artefacts: Traditional crafts of Chhattisgarh are displayed on the trees.

Pujaripali: Located in the Raigarh district in Chhattisgarh, this ancient village is famous for historical

artefacts such as the stone inscriptions of Gopaladeva. King Gopaladeva is said to have worshipped

seven mothers in this inscription.

Laxman Temple: With unique brick architecture, this ‘Panchrath’ type of temple portrays ageless art and

devotion. At the entrance to the temple, Sheshnaag is seen serving as an umbrella to Lord Shiva. The

many incarnations of Lord Vishnu, Krishna Leela, ornamental symbols, and erogenous pictures are

carved on the entrance of this temple.

Suwa (Parrot) Dance: A traditional dance form perfromed by ladies, especially during Diwali with wishes

for prosperity and a good life

Photo Booth: Step into the shoes of the tribals of Chhattisgarh and get clicked

Stage at the Venue: The stage will replicate the historically significant town of Sirpur at Chhattisgarh.

Most of the monuments and temples were built between the 5th-8th century A.D.

Turhi: Life-size creation of a tribal playing the traditional musical instrument

A picturesque ambience filled with a splash of colours, tribal music playing across boulevard, variety of

sumptuous food options and enthralling audience is what “SurajKund Mela 2015” is all about. The Mela

was first organised in 1987 , marked by a show of talent from skilled artists and craftsmen from across

India. The whole festival site came alive with colourful confetti, make-shift stalls, and traditional items

for visitors to buy from the various countries and states. Thereafter, every year a state is chosen for the

Mela, to highlight the state in totality covering its architecture, fine arts and crafts. This year

Chhattisgarh is chosen as the Theme State to showcase its rich tribal heritage & culture. The Mela is

executed, organized and hosted by Harayana Tourism Corporation and is a symbol of pride for all

tourism boards including international tourism as well.

The 15-day extravaganza, was inaugurated by Haryana Chief Minister, Manohar Lal Khattar while Chhattisgarh Chief Minister, Dr. Raman Singh inaugurated the ‘Apna Ghar’ – a prototype of a typical Chhattisgarhi house. He mentioned that Chhattisgarh is happy to be associated with the Mela which is one of world’s largest exhibitions for art, culture and crafts. It is sure to give a tremendous boost to the state toursim.

As one enters the Mela, one would see a series of cultural dance performances by various tribals from Chhattisgarh and other states as well. I enjoyed “Gedi Dance” ,which is performed by the men of one of the tribes of Bastar, where men wore colourful clothes using bamboo sticks as props. As I entered the mela, I was flabbergasted to see the whole alley was decorated with Bastar art , massive “Malhar Gate” – gate to Pataleshwar Temple, where Malhar is a remarkable depiction of Goddesses Ganga and Yamuna. The entry to the festival is made so lively that each corner, each tree, each area is decorated with various artificial, colourful flowers, paper flower motif , Dhokar Art from Chhattisgarh, bedecked folk dancers and handmade artistic drawing. Walking from the gate , there was a traditional centre court having a structure of a man, embedded with tree trunk and leaves which showcased health practices of the tribals in Chhattisgarh, basis plants zealously guarded by locals for biodiversity . The state boasts of more than 880 traditional healers and more than 1500 medicinal plant species.

Gates to various entries which mesmerised the crowd-Surajkund Mela 2015

Along with the states of India, I observed various countries showcasing their culture, like Lebanon,Thailand, Sri Lanka, Qatar, Uzbekistan, etc . Considering that Mela ground is spread across 40 acres, it would be difficult to find places of choice that you wish to check out. However, technology has made things very accessible. So I downloaded “ Surajkund Mela app“ which is helpful to find the routes as well. It gives you various options to locate main attractions, info about fair, artist profile, stall number, event schedule, etc. With this information I walked across the Mela with great pride and tried capturing in the little things of sundry charms. Surajkund Mela also offers a great opportunity for visitors to see the tourism culture of a particular state besides few international regions, as they see some part of it right through the Mela.

Evening light falling across make -shift stalls for shopping, Surajkund Mela 2015

During the fair, various folk dances, quizzes, musical evenings are held in an amphitheatre, organised by each tourism board to showcase their culture. I happened to witness the tribal music derived from Bastar region of Chhattigarh . There were also performances by famous Qawwals Addul Hamid Sabri & Razia Bano, and Rajasthani folk by famous Manganyaar/Langaa singers and Haryanavi Tadka by famous atist Gajender Phogat.

Various live performances showcase their talent through music and dance – Surajkund Mela 2015

Now the part which I always crave to hunt down in mela, is the local food on offer. The fair along with multicultural episodes also compliments various cuisines from states & international tourism. The Mela offers every visitor a unique culinary rendezvous with local and rich food. Since theme state being Chhattisgarh, I decided to cherish the cuisine which was simple and modest.Their staple ingredient is rice, along side various influences of pulses (daals), curries, chutneys (pastes) and subzis (vegetables), which enhance the experience. The cuisine is very high on taste, but also high on health the combination is made of vitamins and proteins. Spoiled for choices, I tried Kari Laddu- A sweet Laddu made of Besan sev and jaggery, Gulgula- a sweet bhajia prepared with wheat flour and jiggery, Thethri- prepared with gram flour and Murra Laddu -a laddu prepared with murmure and jaggery.

Types of snacks and savouries – Surajkund Mela 2015

The next round of tasting involved Rice Chila- made like a rice like dosa and served with chutney( usually had in breakfast), followed by Urad Bada- prepared with soaked Urad and eaten with sour kadi. Later to fulfill my sweet cravings, I had Khaja which is prepared from refined flour and sugar. I quite fell in love with the taste of Bijauri- a papad prepared with seeds of Rakhiya.

Next I wanted to try some of the main dishes. So there was Chhattisgarh Thali” with a variety of vegetables kept in the pot to keep them cooking and rich in flavour. The dish had bread- angra bread which was semi hard to go with the vegetables. They also had variety of chutneys like Patal Chutney (tomato Chutney), garlic chili chutney and garlic chili (roasted) chutney. There was chench bhaji (red),spinach Bhaji, dubki kadi, pickle- dahi mirch (yoghurt chili),and gulgula (like sweet Dish). They also had traditional Chhattisgarhi vegetable jimikanda, munga, jurgarkhiya badi, fried bhata, masoor batkar, etc. The entire area of food court was decorated with 3-D fabric fruits and leaves and entrance was decorated with a giant rainbow and big size sunflower.

Traditional Chhattisgarhi vegetable -Surajkund Mela 2015

Traditional Chhattisgarh Thali- SurajKund Mela, 2015

After the sumptuous meal, I was sure that I would return to Mela another day to try other cuisines as well and various zones they had constructed as per season as well. The richness and diversity of art, culture, food local life is definitely an enthralling experience for a visitor.

The Chhattisgarh Apex Handloom Federation joined hands with NIFT to showcase traditional silks and

motifs from the State at the ongoing Surajkund Mela.

Blessed with a rich artistic and cultural heritage, Chhattisgarh has the distinction of producing unique art

forms and textiles. This slice of heritage needs some serious attention to not only help the younger

generation continue the practices but to link the products to a viable market.

The Chhattisgarh Apex Handloom Federation (CAHF), in an attempt to preserve and popularise the art

and craft of the State, collaborated with the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) to display a

wide assortment of traditional and formal costumes at a fashion extravaganza at the ongoing Surajkund

International Crafts Mela. The colourful garments were an amalgamation of tribal culture and Western

styling.

In this mutually beneficial partnership, the traditional weavers of the State created hand woven fabric

which was further improvised by the NIFT students and faculty to make the garments look

contemporary, chic and classy.

This collaborative venture also entailed the project coordinator Anu Jain, Associate Professor — NIFT,

travelling to the State to get a first hand experience of the work done by the indigenous communities

and understanding how Chhattisgarh plans to incorporate its rich artistic traditions into modern wear

and then working closely with the students for three months.

The fashion show “Amber-Mandaar: Vastra from Divine Land” was presented at the Mela intermittently

punctuated by tribal dance forms and music from Chhattisgarh, the theme State of this year. Every year,

the theme State presents a fashion show at the Haryana Tourism event.

According to Anu, the aim behind hosting the extravaganza was to project textiles in a manner that it

boost the career of the weavers and block printers and encourage children to follow in the footsteps of

their forefathers.

“We travelled to Raipur and Champa, a town belonging to the Devangan weaving community. The

interaction with the weavers was pretty useful and brainstorming. It helped the team at NIFT to

understand their perspective. We procured fabric from them to get a feel of the cloth and design outfits

accordingly,” said Anu.

Explaining the reason behind presenting Kosa silk in different avatars, Shruti Singh, MD, CAHF, pointed

out that “It has unique geometric patterns in weaving.”

“So Kosa, reared from a wild variety of silk worm, is being promoted and propagated by us. Tribal motifs

indicating human figures and animals could be seen in the accessories worn by models during the show.

We gave the NIFT complete freedom to design the outfits but stressed the need to promote textiles.

Two students from the textile design department and four from the fashion design department were

selected from the kind of work they have done. Two fashion design alumni were selected,” Singh said.

Noting that the fashion show was conceived in a manner to attract more tourists into the State, Santosh

Misra, Managing Director Chhattisgarh Tourism Board, said the celebration of clothes “has always been

an integral part of the Surajkund Mela.”

“Through this show, we also made an attempt to revive art forms like the Godhna prints. Instead of

making them on the walls, some creative people are now making them on saris. Then there is traditional

jewelleries Kardhani and Hansuli, tribal ornament worn around the neck,” Misra added.

The show began with models sporting trendy attire, a blend of Western minimalism and hand woven

craftsmanship of the State.

With a touch of class and craft, the Kosa silk sari was presented at the show. Two kinds of original tribal

headgear were worn by models to make people aware of the rich cultural heritage of the State.

Used as a prop, the headgear gave the curator an opportunity to create drama on the rostrum.
