Historical Background�Surajkund – the complex derives its name from ancient
amphitheatre, Sun Pool and dates to 10th century AD
�Fascinated by the surrounding of this terrain, Raja
Suraj Pal, chose to build a Sun Temple and a Sun
PoolPool
�Over the ages, the temple fell into disarray, however,
the amphitheatre continues to stand even today
�It is after this Sun Pool that the complex came to be
christened as Surajkund
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND 2
• The sun pool, cupped in the Aravali Range, continues
to radiate magnificence
• It’s proximity to Delhi, made it an ideal urban retreat
within the suburban serenity

Brief Introduction
• Surajkund Crafts Mela started in the year 1987, from 1-15th February
• Organised under the aegis of Ministry of Tourism, the Mela attracts lakhs of visitors from across the country and abroad every yearand abroad every year
• The objective is to promote the sensitivity of the rich Indian art, culture, music and folk art
• The Mela has pioneered in bringing about over 400 craftspersons in a single venue to display their arts and crafts
• It has become an earmark event in the calendars of tourism industry in India.
25th Surajkund Mela-The Highlights• The Mela will be inaugurated by Sh.Subodh Kant Sahai, Union Tourism

• 7 more acres of land is reclaimed to build 125 more work huts this year
• An exquisite Pinjore (Haryana) Gate has been constructed to provide a glimpse of the Mughal gardens

• The Mela grounds has been given a new ambience with special decoration and colourful lights
• Three LED screens have been installed in the premise of the grounds
• Bio-Toilets and disabled friendly ramps have been constructed
• Number of food stalls has been increased to 30 besides provision of food vending at strategic places other than the food court

On the occasion of Silver Jubilee, a special
commemorative cover of Surajkund Mela will be
released by Department of Post, Government of

Theme State-Andhra
Pradesh• Andhra Pradesh, one of the richest States in art, craft
and culture is the theme state
• Its natural splendour, historic grandeur and the colourful
flavour will give a vibrant ethos to Surajkund Mela
• The visitors will get a glimpse into the rich cultural
heritage of the state which dates back to 13th Century

grounds with four grand arches, each facing a cardinal

• Kondapalli toys, Lacquer ware, Pembarthi Metal Crafts
and Banjara Needle Crafts are some of the many
handicrafts to be displayed from the state
• Kalamkari fabrics, Pochampally Handlooms and

• The cuisine of Andhra Pradesh will include Hyderabadi
biryanis, kebabs, sheer korma, payasam, etc
• The Choupals will echo with the cultural performances
by the artists from the theme state.
Agencies Involved
• Organised primarily under the aegis of the Ministry of Tourism
• Agencies like Development Commissioners of Handicrafts and Handlooms,
Ministries of Culture and External Affairs are intensively involved
• It is a collective effort of Haryana Tourism and the Tourism Department of the
Theme State
• North Central Zonal Cultural Centre (NCZCC) Allahabad, ICCR-New Delhi and • North Central Zonal Cultural Centre (NCZCC) Allahabad, ICCR-New Delhi and

arrangements of the Mela

The Footfall-Our Popularity!
• Last year around 7.5 lakh people visited the Mela in a span of 15 days
• Weekends in the Mela can be seen with visitors ushering in and hustle bustle of the crowd

• It is expected this year to have a footfall of around 10 lakh visitors
• The popularity of the event can be gauged as there are many who visit the Mela several times in a row
Safety Measures
• More effective CCTV cameras have been installed for
security and e-surveillance
• Special fire safety measures have been taken by

• Disaster Management plan has been chalked out with
the assistance of police and experts
• More number of dispensaries, ambulances and
wheelchairs
• There will be food safety audit to ensure health and
hygiene
Security Measures
• Fool proof security with better e-surveillance
• The security has been strengthened with more secure
boundary wall to enable the police authorities to have a

machaans to counter any unforeseen circumstance
• More police presence with deployment in plain clothes
to have a hawk eye on all activities

minimise malicious activities and its misuse
