News-Letter, which became a magazine in 1926. It quickly grew into a prime source of science news for libraries, schools, and individuals. In 1942, it launched the first of its prestigious education competitions, the Science Talent Search. Today, the Society is dedicated to providing concise, accurate, and inspirational science news and opportunities to its nearly 100,000 subscribing members and donors, the more than 50,000 alumni of its competitions worldwide, and tens of millions of unique online visitors and social media followers. The Chief Advancement Officer will work with the Society’s leadership including its esteemed Board of Trustees, and the full staff to increase the Society’s national reach through individual, corporate and foundation support. The right candidate will have an entrepreneurial drive and demonstrate out of the box thinking to support the initiatives of the organization.

Position Overview – Chief Advancement Officer The Society for Science & the Public is seeking a Chief Advancement Officer to serve as a key member of the Society’s leadership team. The Chief Advancement Officer will be responsible for fundraising and revenue growth through corporate and foundation relations, individual gifts, alumni relations, membership engagement, enterprise and sales opportunities for the organization. S/He will particularly focus on the following priorities:

• Doubling the size of the organization and reaching more students and individuals • Finding title sponsors for competitions • Building a robust major gifts program • Thinking of new revenue ideas/sources • Understanding modern day philanthropy—high tech and financial sector

This position will collaborate closely with the Chief Marketing Officer to maximize communication strategies and branding efforts across the organization, the Chief Program Officer to advance support for new and existing science competitions, the Chief Technology Officer on web development initiatives and the Editor in Chief of Science News to ensure that the revenue needs of the Science News Media Group are met. The Chief Advancement Officer will provide leadership and strategic planning to advance the philanthropic, enterprise revenue and external-facing relationship cultivation goals of the organization. This position reports to the Chief Executive Officer and oversees about ten staff and numerous interns. This is a full-time, exempt position based in Washington, DC.

Position Responsibilities 1) Development

Corporate and Foundation Donors

• Solicit, secure, and successfully manage long-term and varied sponsorships across programs and products

• Identify, develop and implement a relationship building strategy with new corporations and foundations

• Leverage all organization assets, including communications, special events and other outreach

strategies to renew and grow existing corporation and foundation support

• Work with events management team to develop and implement strategies and tactics that will grow top line revenues for events through corporate and individual sponsorships

• Review and enhance all processes, measurements, etc. that enable the department to operate

efficiently and effectively in the proposal writing and stewardship process Individual Donors

• Scale individual donor giving that launched in 2010 and secured about 4,000 donations in 2014

• Oversee the planning and implementation of diverse activities designed to keep donors informed, interested, and actively engaged in the life of the Society

• Leverage all organization assets, including communications, special events and other outreach

strategies to renew and grow existing individual donor support

• Build a major gifts program

• Create an active planned giving program from its 50,000 alumni base 2) Alumni Relations

• Establish and build relationships with a wide range of alumni, locally, regionally, nationally and internationally

• Develop a robust set of alumni donors as part of a broader strategy of scaling annual giving efforts • Oversee and ensure accurate and complete alumni database records; capture contact, biographical and

career information of alumni via surveys, projects (e.g. alumni directory), correspondence, website, including updating committee membership, event participation – create an alumni profile

• Plan, oversee and maintain regular communications with alumni via direct contact, digital

communication, and print publications to keep alumni abreast of the Society’s news

• Set strategic goals and objectives as well as oversee the planning and implementation of diverse

activities (creation of leadership councils and programming to encourage, recognize and reward volunteers for the Society and its programs) designed to keep alumni informed, interested, and actively engaged in the life of the Society

3) Membership Engagement

• Develop a strategy for enhancing relationships and building the Society’s membership base, such as creating exclusive events for local, regional and national members

• Build a moves management system to encourage and entice movement up in giving levels for members turned donors

• Work with the Chief Marketing Officer to communicate with members effectively and efficiently

• Develop new and improved standards for membership benefits 4) Enterprise

• Determine and oversee development of projects consistent with the Society’s agreed upon roadmap for new business development

• Identify opportunities to grow unrestricted annual support while leading opportunities for targeted

investments through enterprise

• Build high performance, collaborative interactions across departments in support of new business development

5) Executive Leadership

• Provide guidance and leadership to the senior management team of the Society on issues and ideas related to the development department

• Manage budgetary responsibility for development department and related expenses

• Manage and appropriately scale the development team to enhance the depth and breadth of the Society’s capabilities

• Review, revise and enhance all development processes, measurements, etc. to enable these

functions to operate efficiently and effectively

• Define and regularly analyze a range of key metrics across development activities to guide decision- making, evaluate effectiveness of efforts, and report to Society leadership, including the Board of Trustees, and its Development Committee

• Build, manage and effectively motivate a team of about ten staff

Candidate Requirements • Bachelor’s degree: MBA preferred

• 15+ years, experience in development, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership/executive

role

• Membership organization experience strongly desired

• Excellent analytical, reasoning and problem-solving skills

• Exceptional written, oral and relationship building skills

• Highly entrepreneurial from the nonprofit or for profit sector

• Strong understanding of networking and relationship cultivation

Client Overview – Society for Science & the Public Society for Science & the Public is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) membership organization dedicated to public engagement in scientific research and education. Its vision is to promote the understanding and appreciation of science and the vital role it plays in human advancement: to inform, educate and inspire. Society for Science & the Public has a staff of 75, six of whom are devoted to development and revenue generation. Under new leadership, Maya Ajmera, the President & CEO, the organization is in a growth mode, adding staff at a rapid pace to support the growing programs. The Society relies heavily on its corporate partners and nationwide membership to raise more than $22 million annually to fund its programs. The organization’s professional staff provides editorial, management and administrative support for publishing Science News as well as executing world class science competitions, both from its national office in Washington, DC. In 2008, Science Service became Society for Science & the Public in order to better reflect the mission of the organization to advocate for science in the public interest. In 2013, the Society began offering an all-in-one membership and subscription program that allows subscribers to access Science News in their preferred format and launched a new website that unifies its award-winning publications with its science education and competition programs.

Science News Media Group:

• Science News-Letter was renamed Science News in 1966 and its online component was launched in 1996. Now updated continuously online, Science News attracts nearly eight million unique online viewers annually.

• In 2003, Science Service launched Science News for Kids. This freely accessible online publication provides interactive interfaces and science news to students, parents, and educators, and is designed to appeal to ages 9 through 14. It was renamed Science News for Students with a greater emphasis on classroom curricula.

• Recently, Science News signed two major deals including reaching the Chinese market and creating a series of e-books in partnership with Diversion Books.

Educational Competitions:

• In 1942, Science Service launched the Science Talent Search (STS), the nation's oldest and most highly regarded science contest for high school seniors, first in partnership with Westinghouse, and sponsored by Intel since 1998.

• In 1950, Science Service created the National Science Fair for high school winners of local and regional science fairs, first held in Philadelphia. In 1958, the fair became international for the first time when Japan, Canada, and Germany joined the competition. This annual fair has since grown into the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) with affiliated fairs in more than 78 countries, regions, and territories.

• In 2010, the Society launched the Broadcom MASTERS (Math, Applied Science, Technology and Engineering for Rising Stars) competition for U.S. 6th-8th grade students in partnership with the Broadcom Foundation.

• In 2009, with the generous support of Intel, the Society launched its Fellowship Program providing funds and training to selected U.S. science and math teachers who serve under-resourced students, to enable interested and motivated students to perform high-quality independent scientific research.

• In 2013, in collaboration with the Tomorrow Project, Arizona State University’s Center for Science and the Imagination, and the Intel Foundation, the Society hosted The Future: Powered by Fiction, a science fiction competition for ages 13-25.

• Also in 2013, the Society partnered with the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation on the Science Play and Research Kit (SPARK): Reimagining the 21st Century Chemistry Set competition. This competition was seeking ideas that engage and inspire both children and adults to become more involved in hands-on science.

President and CEO Maya Ajmera is the President and CEO of Society for Science & the Public and Publisher of its award-winning magazine, Science News, and family of media properties. As a lifelong science enthusiast and supporter of science education, Maya already had a significant connection to the Society. She is an aluma of the Westinghouse Science Talent Search (now known as the Intel Science Talent Search) for her project, “Isolation and Characterization of a Tetracycline Resistant Plasmid of an Animal Isolate Streptococcus faecalis, SF2." She earned her AB in biology from Bryn Mawr College and MPP from Duke University. In 2013-2014, Maya served as the inaugural Social Entrepreneur in Residence for Duke University and Visiting Professor for the Practice of Public Policy at The Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke. From 2011-2014, Maya was a Visiting Scholar and Professorial Lecturer at The Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) at Johns Hopkins University. She continues to serve as an adjunct on the faculty of the International Development Program and teaches the course, "Social Innovations in International Development for Children and Youth."

In 1993, Maya founded The Global Fund for Children (GFC), a nonprofit organization that invests in innovative, community-based organizations working with some of the world’s most vulnerable children and youth. Under Maya's 18 years of leadership, GFC grew from a vision into one of the largest networks of grassroots organizations working on behalf of vulnerable children. To date, GFC has awarded more than $35 million to more than 600 grassroots organizations in 80 countries, touching the lives of nearly 10 million children. Maya is also an award-winning children’s book author of nearly 20 titles, including Children from Australia to Zimbabwe, Faith, and To Be a Kid, with more than 3 million readers worldwide.
