Instructions:1. Print the templates on pages 7-9 and cut out.2. Measure and cut out your chipboard pieces (a box cutter works well

here) in the following sizes: 2 8.5x2.7-inch pieces, 2 6x2.75-inch pieces, 2 8.5x6-inch pieces. These will form the structure ofyour box. (if you do not know what chipboard is--it is a sturdy typeof cardboard, often found on the back of notebooks, legal notepads, orinserted in mailing envelopes to help keep the content flatI save allthe chipboard I come across for moments like this when I might decide

    I need some

so my chipboard came from mailing envelopes andnotepads. You should note though that not all chipboard is createdequal and often the chipboard on spiral bound notebooks is quiteflimsythe backs of legal pads tend to be sturdier, as do the piecesthat come in mailing envelopes).

    3. Determine which fabrics will form the top, bottom, sides, front andback of the box. Pin the template pieces to your fabrics and cutoutuse different fabrics for each piece in order to achieve the

mismatchy-patchworky effect on the box. You should have 8 differentpieces of fabric once you have cut out all the pieces (this includes thebox and pocket pieces).

    4. Take the piece of fabric that will be on the bottom of your box andfold it in half (it should measure 9.5x6.5 inches when folded), wrongside facing out (right sides facing in). Pin in place so the layersare even along the edges, Sew along 2 of the open edges (using a-

inch inseam), leaving one of the shorter end edges open (do not sew along the folded edge).Turn right-side out, pushing the corners out with a chop stick.

    1. Slip she piece of chipboad shas mearter 8.5x6 inride yot pockes of fabic, pushing itin as far as it will go. Turn about-inch of the unsewn fabric edge inside the pocket offabric, pinning your edges cleanly together, then sew along the very edge of the fabric(about 1/8-inch from the edge), taking care not to catch your chipboard edge as your sew.

    2. Repeat as described in steps 4 & 5, for both of your box side pieces (they should measure6x3.25 when folded, befoesewn), as well as for the box front piece (it should measure9.5x3.25 when folded, befoesewn). Set all 4 completed box pieces aside for now.

    3. Cut a piece from your-inch elastic that measures approximately 7-inches. Using adisappearing marker, mark the elastic at the following intervals: .5-inches, 1.5-inches,2.5-inches, 3.5-inches, 4.5-inches, 5.5-inches, 6.5-inches, and 7.5-inches.

    4. Take your box back fabric piece and fold it in half, right side facing out. With the fold atthe top, center the piece of elastic with the markings in the center of the piece of foldedfabric. Pin it in place on the top layer of fabric only (do not pin through the bottom layerof fabric). Unfold the fabric and sew back and forth several times over each place you

of fabric). Sew back and forth several times on the lines marked on the elasticthis willbecome a strap that will hold 6 small spools of thread (please note that this is designed tohold the small, narrow 100 meter Guterman thread spools).

    9. Fold the box back piece of fabric in half again, this time with rights sides facing in (wrongside out). Now follow the directions as in steps 4 and 5, until the back box piece iscompleted.

    10. Now it is time to make the pocket for the inside of the box top. Take your pocket fabricand fold it in half (it should measure 4.5x4.5-inches when folded), right sides facing in,wrong sides facing out. Sew around 3 edges of the fabric (not the folded edge), leaving asmall unsewn space so you can turn it right-side out. Turn right side out, pushing thecorners out with a chopstick. Turn the raw edges inside and pin. Repeat these same stepswith your pocket flap piece.

11.Take your box top fabric and fold in half (so it measures 9.5x6.5 when folded), rightsides facing OUT (wrong sides in), folded edge at the top. Pin your sewn pocket fabricpiece to your folded box cover fabric (only pinning to the top layer of fabric). The pocketpiece should be positioned so it is about 2-inches from the right-edge of the box top, andabout 1.5-inches from the top folded edge. Unfold the box top fabric and top stitch aroundthe pocket piece, leaving the top edge open (so it will form a pocket).

    Sew over each mark

    on the elastic,

    reinforcing by sewing

    backward and

    forward several

    times.

12.Refold the box top fabric piece in half. Pin the pocket flap in place, about 1-inch from thetop-edge of the box top fold (pinning only to the top layer of fabric). Unfold the box topfabric piece. Top stitch along the top edge of pocket flap (so it will form a flap over thepocket). Fold out the pocket flap, away from the box top fabric piece and top stitch alongthe other 3 edges.

13.Refold the box top fabric piece once again. Position your remaining 1.5-inch piece ofelastic so it can accommodate a small or medium sized scissors inside the box top, with thetip of scissors pointing slightly in at an angle. Pin in place (top layer only). Unfold thebox top fabric and sew the elastic into place (leave about-inch of elastic at either end),sewing back and forth to secure it in place.

14.Fold the box top piece of fabric in half again, this time with rights sides facing in (wrongside out). Now follow the directions as in steps 4 and 5, until the back box piece iscompleted.

    15.

Gather your box bottom, and all 4 side pieces. Take the box bottom piece and the boxback piece and align the longer-sewn edges (not the edges with the fold)pull the small-amount of loose fabric back, away from the chipboard insert inside, and pin the two layersof fabric together as best you can, taking care to keep the edges aligned (your thread elasticshould be facing down, onto the box bottom, so you cannot see it). Sewing about 1/8-inchfrom the edge, sew the two pieces together. Unfold these two pieces so they are no longer ontop of one another.

16.Now, proceed to attach and sew on the remaining side and front pieces, always taking careto keep the folded edges facing inward, and sewing along the long edges that have a seam. When you finish attaching these, your box should look like this with all the pieces unfoldedand lying flat:

    17. Thread a needle in a color that matches your back box piece and knot one end, Fold upone of the side pieces, and the back piece so they are at a right angle to one another,

forming a corner of your box. Starting from the top of the corner, and using a tiny ladderstitch, hand-sew the two pieces together at the edges where they meet (take care that the topedges are level with one another). Repeat with the remaining side and front piece, until youhave an open top box.

    18. Using apiece of button thread, or pearl cotton, attach the box top (cover) to the top of the back boxpiece using a blanket stitch. Stitch from the inside of the box, where the two edges meet.Ensure that when you sew the box top/cover on, that you have it facing the correct directionso that when you open the cover, the pocket inside will be facing uprightbecause it surewould be a pity to screw that up at this point when you are very nearly done.

    19. Sew a button with shank to the front of your box, about 1-inch from the top edge of thebox. Attach a small loop of narrow ribbon or pearl cotton to the underside of your boxtop, near the edge, aligned so it is directly above where you have sewn on your button. Theloop should be just big enough to slip around your button, so as to form a button closurefor the box.

    20. Voila! You are done at last! Here are some suggestions for things to include in yoursewing kit, when you are ready to outfit it for the lucky child in your life:

6 spools of Guterman thread in a rainbowof bighs and happy color (o, she childrfavorite colors)

Several larger sized needles with extra large eyes (for easy threading)like those usedfor needlework

A medium-sized scissors Several cards of lovely buttons A seam ripper with a large handle Large colored ball head pins Some beeswax for running thread through (making it less likely to tangle) Some felt for easy fray-proof first projects A box of fabric crayons A little paper notepad for capturing ideas and drawing new sewing designs And if you still have some creative energy left, make the pin-cushion gal and little

Instructions for the Little Needle Book:1. Print the templates on page 14 and cut out.2. Pin the cover template to the cotton fabric you selected for the cover and cut out. Repeat

with the felt you selected to line the cover.

    3. Trace the cover template onto your sheet of fusible web and cut out. Determine which side ofthe fusible web paper is stuck to the fusible web--peel the paper away that is not stuck to theweb. Lay the side with the exposed fusible web to the wrong-side of cotton fabric coverpiece. Peel the remaining piece of paper away on the fusible web and stick the felt coverlining to the cotton fabric cover piece--ensure all edges are cleanly matched up (trim anyexcess or uneven edges).

    4. Following the instructions on your fusible web, iron your cover pieces together so they arewell-adhered to one another (because felt is heavier weight, you may need to iron a bitlonger than instructed in order to securely fuse all the layers together).

    5. Pin the needle book pages template to your white wool felt. Cut out. Repeat so you have 2pages.

6.Sew around the entire edge of your cover, -inch from the edge of the cover. This is justextra insurance that your layers will stay together in case the fusible web fails youandit also looks pretty and tidy, in my opinion.

    7. Stack the felt pages so their edges are cleanly aligned. Now sew the pages into the cover, sewing along the mid-point of the pages (as indicated on the template), and attaching theminto the cover as indicated on the cover template.

8.Sew one end of your ribbon (20 inches) to the inside edge of the back book cover (theribbon will wrap around the cover once completed, securing it closed), where indicated onthe cover template.

    9. Try the book out--Stick a few needles in varying sizes inside the pages. You can stickspecial pins on any empty pages too. Wrap it up all nice and secure with the ribbon andtuck it away inside your sewing kit box. Making is war eary now, warns is?
