PROCESSIONAL HYMN – please stand

1 O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come,

our shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal home.

2 Beneath the shadow of your throne

your people lived secure; sufficient is your arm alone,

and our defence is sure.

3 Before the hills in order stood, or earth from darkness came, from everlasting you are God,

to endless years the same. 4

A thousand ages in your sight are like an evening gone;

short is the watch that ends the night, before the rising sun.

5 Time, like an ever-rolling stream,

will bear us all away; we pass forgotten, as a dream

dies with the dawning day. 6

O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come:

be our defence while life shall last, and our eternal home!

Words: Isaac Watts (1674-1748) Tune: St Anne (probably by W. Croft 1678-1727)

All Spirit of God, search our hearts.

Kyrie is sung by the Choir and Congregation

Priest God has promised forgiveness to all who truly repent, turn to Christ in faith and are themselves forgiving. In silence we call to mind our sins.

Silence

Let us confess our sins.

Merciful God, we have sinned in what we have thought and said, in the wrong we have done and in the good we have not done. We have sinned in ignorance: we have sinned in weakness: we have sinned through our own deliberate fault. We are truly sorry. We repent and turn to you. Forgive us, for our Saviour Christ’s sake, and renew our lives to the glory of your name. Amen.

SERMON

CREED

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation

he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, and has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

INTERCESSIONS

Priest: Let us pray for the church and the world, giving thanks for God’s goodness.

The Liturgist leads the people in prayer.

When invited by the Liturgist, please stand as we pay our respects to those who defended our nation in wartime and paid the ultimate cost for their service.

The Liturgist reads the Ode

They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old;

age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn; at the going down of the sun and in the morning,

we will remember them.

‘Amazing Grace’ is played on the bagpipes by Guy Steward.

The first verse of the national anthem in Maori and English is sung

1 E Ihowā Atua

O ngā iwi mātou rā Āta whakarangona

Me aroha noa Kia hua ko te pai

Kia tau tō atawhai Manaakitia mai

Aotearoa

2 God of nations at thy feet

In the bonds of love we meet Hear our voices, we entreat

God defend our free land Guard Pacific's triple star

From the shafts of strife and war Make her praises heard afar God defend New Zealand.

E te Whanau, we are the body of Christ. By one Spirit we were baptised into one body.

Keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. Amen. We are bound by the love of Christ.

OFFERTORY HYMN

1 O God of love, O King of peace,

make wars throughout the world to cease; the wrath of sinful man restrain;

give peace, O God, give peace again! 2

Remember, Lord, Thy works of old, the wonders that our fathers told; remember not our sins' dark stain;

give peace, O God, give peace again! 3

Whom shall we trust but Thee, O Lord? Where rest but on Thy faithful word?

none ever called on Thee in vain: give peace, O God, give peace again!

4 Where saints and angels dwell above,

all hearts are knit in holy love; O bind us in that heav'nly chain:

give peace, O God, give peace again!

Words: H.W. Baker (1821-1877) Tune: Fulda (W. Gardiner Sacred Melodies 1815)

PREPARATION OF THE GIFTS Bread, wine and alms are offered to God with the following prayer.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

It is recommended that the people stand throughout the following prayer, but you are welcome to sit if you prefer.

The Presider sings and the congregation responds:

The Lord is here. God’s Spirit is with us.

Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to offer thanks and praise.

It is right indeed, it is our joy and our salvation, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, at all times and in all places to give you thanks and praise through Christ your only Son. You are the source of all life and goodness; through your eternal Word you have created all things from the beginning and formed us in your own image. When we sinned and turned away you called us back to yourself and gave your Son to share our human nature. You raised him to life triumphant over death; you exalted him in glory. By his victory over death, the reign of sin is ended, a new age has dawned, a broken world is restored and we are made whole once more. In him you have made us a holy people by sending upon us your holy and lifegiving Spirit. Therefore with Mary, Mark and all the faithful who rest in him, with angels and archangels and all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and singing:

SANCTUS and BENEDICTUS are sung by the choir and congregation

Page 9: CHORAL EUCHARIST - stmarks.org.nz

All glory and thanksgiving to you, holy Father; on the night before he died

your Son, Jesus Christ, took bread; when he had given you thanks, he broke it, gave it to his disciples, and said: Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you; do this to remember me. After supper he took the cup; when he had given you thanks, he gave it to them and said: Drink this, all of you, for this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins; do this as often as you drink it, to remember me.

Therefore loving God, recalling your great goodness to us in Christ, his suffering and death, his resurrection and ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate our redemption with this bread of life and this cup of salvation. Accept our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving which we offer through Christ our great high priest. Send your Holy Spirit that these gifts of bread and wine which we receive may be to us the body and blood of Christ, and that we, filled with the Spirit’s grace and power, may be renewed for the service of your kingdom. United in Christ with all who stand before you in earth and heaven, we worship you, O God, in songs of everlasting praise.

COMMUNION

As Christ teaches us we pray as we sing,

The Presider breaks the bread. We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share the one bread.

Invitation

The Presider invites the people saying Draw near and receive the body and blood of our Saviour Jesus Christ in remembrance that he died for us. Let us feed on Him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving.

AGNUS DEI is sung by the choir and congregation

All are welcome to receive the blessed bread and wine. If you would prefer a blessing, please indicate this by crossing your arms over your chest at the altar rail. Gluten-free wafers are available on request.

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION Almighty God, giver of all good things, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of the precious body and blood of our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Therefore, ever-living God, keep us steadfast in your holy fellowship. And now we offer ourselves, all that we have and are, to serve you faithfully in the world, through Jesus Christ our Redeemer, to whom with you and the Holy Spirit be all honour and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

CONCLUDING HYMN 1

God is our strength and refuge, our present help in trouble,

and we therefore will not fear, though the earth should change!

Though mountains shake and tremble, though swirling floods are raging,

God the Lord of hosts is with us evermore! 2

There is a flowing river within God's holy city;

God is in the midst of her- she shall not be moved!

God's help is swiftly given, thrones vanish at his presence-

God the Lord of hosts is with us evermore!

3 Come, see the works of our maker,

learn of his deeds all-powerful: wars will cease across the world

when he shatters the spear! Be still and know your creator,

uplift him in the nations- God the Lord of hosts is with us evermore!

Words: After Psalm 46, Richard Bewes (born 1934) Tune: Dam Busters March (E. Coates 1886-1958)
