GATHERING IN GOD’S NAME Please stand

Be thou my wisdom, be thou my true word, be thou ever with me, and I with thee, Lord, be thou my great Father, thy child let me be, be thou in me dwelling, and I one with thee.

Be thou my breastplate, my sword for the fight, be thou my whole armour, be thou my true might, be thou my soul’s shelter, be thou my strong tower, O raise thou me heavenward, great Power of my power.

Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise, be thou my inheritance now and always, be thou and thou only the first in my heart, O Sovereign of heaven, my treasure thou art.

High King of heaven, thou heaven’s bright Sun, O grant me its joys after vict’ry is won, great Heart of my own heart, whatever befall, still be thou my vision, O Ruler of all.

Irish, 8th century, tr. Mary Byrne (1880-1931) Versified by Eleanor Hull (1860-1935)

Let us pray: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Please sit or kneel

Choir Lord have mercy upon us, Christ have mercy upon us, Lord have mercy upon us.

Communion Service in F – Herbert Sumsion (1899-1995)

To turn away from God is spiritual death but to serve him is life.

Let us confess our sins to the God who is ever ready to renew his mercy towards us.

Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE HYMN OF PRAISE (GLORIA) Sung by the Choir Please stand

Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God’s people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Sumsion – in F

THE COLLECT

God of the ages, you call the Church to keep watch in the world and to discern the signs of the times: grant us the wisdom that your Spirit bestows, so that with courage we may proclaim your prophetic word, and complete the work you have set before us; through your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Please sit

FIRST READING: Jeremiah 18.1-11 Read by Jill Morshead

18The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: 2‘Come, go down to the potter’s house, and there I will let you hear my words.’ 3So I went down to the potter’s house, and there he was working at his wheel. 4The vessel he was making of clay was spoiled in the potter’s hand, and he reworked it into another vessel, as seemed good to him.

5Then the word of the Lord came to me: 6Can I not do with you, O house of Israel, just as this potter has done? says the Lord. Just like the clay in the potter’s hand, so are you in my hand, O house of Israel. 7At one moment I may declare concerning a nation or a kingdom, that I will pluck up and break down and destroy it, 8but if that nation, concerning which I have spoken, turns from its evil, I will change my mind about the disaster that I intended to bring on it. 9And at another moment I may declare concerning a nation or a kingdom that I will build and plant it, 10but if it does evil in my sight, not listening to my voice, then I will change my mind about the good that I had intended to do to it. 11Now, therefore, say to the people of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem: Thus says the Lord: Look, I am a potter shaping evil against you and devising a plan against you. Turn now, all of you from your evil way, and amend your ways and your doings.

Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

PSALM 139: 1-9, 12-14 Please sing the response after the cantor, then as indicated

1 O Lord, you have searched me out and known me: you know when I sit or when I stand, you comprehend my thoughts long before. 2 You discern my path and the places where I rest: you are acquainted with all my ways. Response

3 For there is not a word on my tongue: but you, Lord, know it altogether. 4 You have encompassed me behind and before: and have laid your hand upon me. 5 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me: so high that I cannot endure it. Response

6 Where shall I go from your spirit: or where shall I flee from your presence? 7 If I ascend into heaven you are there: if I make my bed in the grave you are there also. Response

8 If I spread out my wings towards the morning: or dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, 9 even there your hand shall lead me: and your right hand shall hold me. Response

12 For you have created my inward parts: you knit me together in my mother’s womb. 13 I will praise you, for you are to be feared: fearful are your acts, and wonderful your works. Response

14 You knew my soul, and my bones were not hidden from you: when I was formed in secret, and woven in the depths of the earth. Response

SECOND READING: Philemon 1-25 Read by Canon A/Prof. Avril Brereton

1Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timothy our brother, To Philemon our dear friend and co-worker, 2to Apphia our sister, to Archippus our fellow-soldier, and to the church in your house: 3Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 4When I remember you in my prayers, I always thank my God 5because I hear of your love for all the saints and your faith towards the Lord Jesus. 6I pray that the sharing of your faith may become effective when you perceive all the good that we may do for Christ. 7I have indeed received much joy and encouragement from your love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you, my brother.

8For this reason, though I am bold enough in Christ to command you to do your duty, 9yet I would rather appeal to you on the basis of love—and I, Paul, do this as an old man, and now also as a prisoner of Christ Jesus. 10I am appealing to you for my child, Onesimus, whose father I have become during my imprisonment. 11Formerly he was useless to you, but now he is indeed useful both to you and to me. 12I am sending him, that is, my own heart, back to you. 13I wanted to keep him with me, so that he might be of service to me in your place during my imprisonment for the gospel; 14but I preferred to do nothing without your consent, in order that your good deed might be voluntary and not something forced. 15Perhaps this is the reason he was separated from you for a while, so that you might have him back for ever, 16no longer as a slave but as more than a slave, a beloved brother—especially to me but how much more to you, both in the flesh and in the Lord.

17So if you consider me your partner, welcome him as you would welcome me. 18If he has wronged you in any way, or owes you anything, charge that to my

6

account. 19I, Paul, am writing this with my own hand: I will repay it. I say nothing about your owing me even your own self. 20Yes, brother, let me have this benefit from you in the Lord! Refresh my heart in Christ. 21Confident of your obedience, I am writing to you, knowing that you will do even more than I say. 22One thing more—prepare a guest room for me, for I am hoping through your prayers to be restored to you. 23Epaphras, my fellow-prisoner in Christ Jesus, sends greetings to you, 24and so do Mark, Aristarchus, Demas, and Luke, my fellow-workers. 25The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.

Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

THE GRADUAL HYMN Please stand

2

Take up thy cross; let not its weight fill thy weak spirit with alarm; his strength shall bear thy spirit up, and brace thy heart, and nerve thine arm.

4

Take up thy cross then in his strength, and calmly every danger brave; ’Twill guide thee to a better home, and lead to victory o’er the grave.

3

Take up thy cross; nor heed the shame, nor let thy foolish pride rebel; the Lord for thee the Cross endured, to save thy soul from death and hell.

5

Take up thy cross, and follow Christ, nor think till death to lay it down; for only they who bear the cross may hope to wear the glorious crown.

Charles Everest (1814-77) alt. New English Hymnal 76

THE GOSPEL Remain standing

The Cantor introduces the acclamation, then all repeat:

Cantor Lord, let your face shine on your servant; and teach me your laws. Alleluia!

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

The Holy Gospel our Lord Jesus Christ according to St Luke: 14.25-35 Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ!

25Now large crowds were travelling with him; and he turned and said to them, 26‘Whoever comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and even life itself, cannot be my disciple. 27Whoever does not carry the cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. 28For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not first sit down and estimate the cost, to see whether he has enough to complete it? 29Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it will begin to ridicule him, 30saying, “This fellow began to build and was not able to finish.” 31Or what king, going out to wage war against another king, will not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to oppose the one who comes against him with twenty thousand? 32If he cannot, then, while the other is still far away, he sends a delegation and asks for the terms of peace. 33So therefore, none of you can become my disciple if you do not give up all your possessions.

34‘Salt is good; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? 35It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure heap; they throw it away. Let anyone with ears to hear listen!’

For the Gospel of the Lord, praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

THE SERMON The Very Revd Dr Andreas Loewe, Dean

NICENE CREED Please stand

We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

8

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Please sit or kneel Led by Prof. Bruce Tonge

Let us pray for the world and for the church.

After each petition Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

At the end of the prayers the presider concludes Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers. Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE NOTICES Please sit

THE OFFERTORY HYMN

During the hymn, an offering is received to support the Cathedral’s ministry. On average our congregants contribute $20 each. Please be as generous as you can. Thank you for your gift. Tap and Go facilities are available on the plates.

For all thy church, O Lord, we intercede; make thou our sad divisions soon to cease; draw us the nearer each to each, we plead, by drawing all to thee, O Prince of peace; thus may we all one bread, one body be, through this blest sacrament of unity.

We pray thee too for wanderers from thy fold; O bring them back, good Shepherd of the sheep, back to the faith which saints believed of old, back to the Church which still that faith doth keep: soon may we all one bread, one body be, through this blest sacrament of unity.

So, Lord, at length when sacraments shall cease, may we be one with all thy church above, one with thy saints in one unbroken peace, one with thy saints in one unbounded love: more blessèd still, in peace and love to be one with the Trinity in Unity.

William Henry Turton (1856–1938) Hymns Ancient and Modern New Standard 265

Meeting 18 September 9.00am Canons Vestry on what the Cathedral community can actively contribute through individual and corporate action in response to the Climate Changing. Attendance; 30 people across the 8am, 9am, 10.30am congregations. Notes. The purpose of the meeting is to hear the views of members of the Cathedral community. This is not a decision-making meeting. The Notes will be sent to the Dean. . We prefer to see the we are in a climate emergency. Use this language rather than ‘Climate Change’. . Melbourne City Council and many other local government areas around Australia have declared a climate emergency. . Follow up with MCC . Prepare a short statement on ‘Climate Emergency’; e.g. one from the link below. . If we go public with being in a climate emergency, we need to doing something individually to address the emergency. Proposal to generate a list of things individuals can do, and call for individual to commit to at least any four of the items on the list. Audit, report, update. . Addressing a climate emergency needs to engage government and corporates: . investments (personal and the Cathedral’s); update information on what govts. and corporates are responding to climate emergency. . The meeting recognised that young people are further down this road than is the Cathedral. This is what they are facing. We could ourselves as in part serving them. . A professional audit of the Cathedral re environmental impact: e.g. greenhouse gases, water. . Include a clause in the Cathedrals new five-year strategic plan on responding to the climate emergency. Keep this agenda before the Chapter. . Banners inside/outside the Cathedral; inside like the pull up banners re. Indigenous Australians. . Renewables on the roof of Cathedral and Cathedral buildings; e.g. tiles as solar panels. . Greenery growing down the square part of the Moorhouse tower. This aligns with part of the MCC plans. . A film at the NOVA ‘20/30’ – but no longer showing. . Include in the next Weekly Notes the following link; ‘Climate Change - The Facts’ by Sir David Attenborough https://iview.abc.net.au/show/climate-change-the facts/video/ZW2018A001S00 . . Connect all this to our Christian faith. Next Step: As the Dean and Canon Ames will be away for some time there will be a follow up meeting, 9-10am 15 September Canons Vestry
