CTK Loves, Lives and Gives Like Jesus! On Monday, May 15, Lynette Dick, Angel and Jan Ruiz, and Jeffrey Fuhrman delivered the large collection of donated supplies. We met Marsha Carey, the Program Manager. She’s a young, vibrant and caring woman who really cares about her residents. There are 45 rooms at the motel. Residents include homeless families, homeless female veterans, and homeless persons needing respite care following a hospital stay. Currently, they are remodeling a few rooms for handicap accessibility. The Family Motel is located in the old Aristocrat Motel on West Colfax near Sheridan. Built in the 1950s, the rooms are small, and fit two twin beds, a dresser and nightstand. They also have a nice outdoor gathering area with picnic tables, chairs and kid’s playground equipment. CTK hopes to continue a relationship with them. In addition to donations, they look for groups to make an evening meal for all of the residents once a month, and persons to adopt a room for new paint and bedding. Residents are given a continental breakfast. Snacks are available throughout the day. Vouchers are given for other meals. Residents are assigned a social worker, who works with them to meet their immediate needs, as well as help to find them a permanent residence. Their paid staff includes the Program Manager, two housekeepers, and a maintenance person. Social workers are from local agencies. The rest are volunteers. What a wonderful and meaningful service to our community! Christ the King Herald Volume 58 June 2017 Issue 6

CTK Loves, Lives and Gives Like Jesus!

On Monday, May 15, Lynette Dick, Angel and Jan Ruiz, and Jeffrey Fuhrman delivered the large collection of

donated supplies. We met Marsha Carey, the Program Manager. She’s a young, vibrant and caring woman who

really cares about her residents. There are 45 rooms at the motel. Residents include homeless families,

homeless female veterans, and homeless persons needing respite care following a hospital stay. Currently, they

are remodeling a few rooms for handicap accessibility. The Family Motel is located in the old Aristocrat Motel

on West Colfax near Sheridan. Built in the 1950s, the rooms are small, and fit two twin beds, a dresser and

nightstand. They also have a nice outdoor gathering area with picnic tables, chairs and kid’s playground

equipment. CTK hopes to continue a relationship with them. In addition to donations, they look for groups to

make an evening meal for all of the residents once a month, and persons to adopt a room for new paint and

bedding.

Residents are given a continental breakfast. Snacks are available throughout the day. Vouchers are given for

other meals. Residents are assigned a social worker, who works with them to meet their immediate needs, as

well as help to find them a permanent residence. Their paid staff includes the Program Manager, two

housekeepers, and a maintenance person. Social workers are from local agencies. The rest are volunteers.

What a wonderful and meaningful service to our community!

Our food item for June is canned or dried

beans. Our food donations for April totaled 132 lbs. for a value of $258.72. Thanks for your generosity.

Please continue to bring the unclipped coupon inserts from the Sunday newspaper. The collection basket is above the coat rack outside of Fellowship Hall. Please make sure the coupons you bring are not expired. The coupon clippers, who meet every Monday morning at Brentwood Methodist, service a company that gives Community Ministry 5% of the value of the coupon (approximately $2000 per year). This is a free and easy way we can all help.

Community Ministry’s main restaurant fundraiser site is The Garlic Knot, 3200 S. Wadsworth Blvd. They give CM 15% of all food purchases dine-in or take out the entire day (the first Tuesday of each month). They usually make about $250-$300. The next day is Tuesday, June 6.

Thank You from Jean Rein Jean would like her CTK friends to know that she is very settled in and happy living at Someren Glen. She especially enjoys the visits of Pastoral Care Team members, Jan Ruiz and Anna Lisa Reynolds. She was blessed to be able to attend worship on Easter Sunday thanks to her family, Kathy and Ed Eaton. She loved seeing all of her CTK friends, and thanks everyone at CTK for remembering her in their prayers.

Community Ministry Bible School

Community Ministry is celebrating their 12th year of a collaborative Vacation Bible School from June 25-29. Unlike many VBS programs, theirs runs in the evening from 6-8:30 p.m. at the Community Ministry facility at 1755 S. Zuni St. The theme this year is “Fiesta”.

Helpers are needed as crew leaders, for set up and clean up. If you can help with any of these things, please call Joyce at 303-935-3428.

Monetary donations are also needed. Make checks payable to Garden Park Church VBS and give to Lynette in the church office.

Upcoming Church in Society

Projects

June:

Many of us are at the stage in life where we want to lighten the load and are ready to share accumulated items that we are no longer using or need. Lutheran Refugee Services is in need of household items for refugees arriving in our country with little but the clothes on their backs. We will collect items on Sundays, June 4 and 11 only. Gently-used items needed: dishes, silverware, glasses, mugs, pots and pans, bakeware, mixing and serving bowls, serving utensils, bath towels, hand towels, washcloths, sheets (twin, full or queen), and bed-sized blankets. July: We will again collect School supplies for Community Ministry. A list of items to be collected will be available in the July Herald.

Lutheran Family Services Older Adult & Caregiver Service offers free monthly telephone conferences, call Ask Your Care Manager, to answer your questions about aging. The next one is titled “Aging in Place: Pre-Planning is Crucial” and will be on June 14 from12:00-1:00pm MST. There are some important questions that need to be addressed to allow you to stay in your home as you age. To think through the answers to these questions, join us on this free call. Registration is required: sign up at www.lfsrm.org or contact 303-217-5864.

Congregational Meeting

A Christ the King Congregational Gathering will be held on Sunday, May 28, following worship, to approve the new CTK Guiding Statements and a plan for new staff development.

The Guiding Statements are:

Vision: Hope and purpose for all

Mission: Love, live and give like Jesus

Core Values: Radical Inclusion,

Relational Service, Infinite Compassion,

Abundant Generosity, Genuine

Community

We hope to add a full-time person to our staff beginning in August to help lead our continuing redevelopment process. That person is Joel Rothe, the current Pastoral Resident at Abiding Hope. With the

congregation’s approval, Joel will serve at CTK beginning mid-August while he completes his few remaining seminary courses and seeks approval for ordination. Pastor Judith Van Osdol from the Synod office and Pastor Doug Hill from Abiding Hope will be present for the congregational gathering to answer all questions.
