“For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God

prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10

What is your ministry at Christ United Methodist Church?

Where do you serve and whom do you serve? Christians respond to God’s call saying:

“Here I am, Lord, send me”. We are called to be in loving service to our community.

We are called to love and serve God and our neighbors. We are called to be servants,

witnesses and ministers of God. We are called to work in the kingdom of God.

Every Christian is a minister and a witness. Every Christian can lead persons to Christ,

by showing the love of God, by sharing a prayer, a word of encouragement, an

invitation to a small group, to work in a mission outreach, or to attend a worship service.

CHRISTIAN LEADERS ARE THOSE WHO PRAY, SEE, LISTEN AND SERVE

Christian leaders pray, see the need, listen to God and serve according to the needs of

the people. Christian leaders in the church need to:

1. Make a commitment to Christ and His Church and support the Church and its

ministries with your prayers, presence, tithes and offerings, service and witness.

2. Keep the focus on God (daily prayers, Bible study, and spiritual disciplines).

3. Share the love of God (act with loving kindness toward all persons).

4. Become a joyful witness (share the Gospel of Jesus with all persons).

There are many needs in our community and at Christ UM Church. There are several

ministries that need to be developed. The ministries of the church can take place only if

we all make a commitment to serve Christ through our Church.

What is your ministry at Christ United Methodist Church?

God is faithful and God promises that “His grace is sufficient for all our needs.”

If you feel that you need to develop a ministry pray, talk to the pastor and your small

group, and trust God to lead you in the right direction. Friends, the Christian life is the

best life and being in ministry in the name of Jesus is the most rewarding job a Christian

disciple can ever have. We would like for every member of the church to carry business

cards with the name of the church and a place to write your name. Be ready to give them

out to people you meet.

Think about it, where is God calling you to serve? Are you giving God excuses? Are

you ready to be the Christian servant that God needs you to be?

What is your ministry at Christ United Methodist Church?

What is your ministry in Lehigh Acres?

In Christ Service,

Pastor Lia

Our Vision

is to invite all people

to follow Jesus Christ,

build them up into

his body and image,

and send them

out to serve.

CHURCH

Many of you wanted to know how the church did with Hurricane Irma. We lost shingles on most of the buildings causing

some water damage inside. Water leaked from the steeple and caused the carpet in the sanctuary to get wet. Siding is

missing from a portion of the back of the sanctuary. Water flooded the bell room so the carpet was wet and the cabinets

above the bells were ruined. The tables, bells, items in the cabinets, and items in the closets that were sitting on the carpet

were removed and put in the costume room or in the chapel. Blue tarps are on the 3 houses across from Fellowship Hall,

the Fellowship Hall and the classrooms. Ceiling tiles and wet insulation were removed by a restoration company and

they had humidifiers and commercial drying fans removing the moisture in each area to prevent mold.

We are waiting our turn to be seen by the insurance adjuster. Then the Trustees will be busy getting bids for the repairs.

Once we know the schedule of repairs to each area, then we will be able to plan where we will be worshipping (sanctuary

or Fellowship Hall) and when we can resume Bible Classes and Literacy Classes.

Our insurance has a 5% named windstorm deductible on the value of each building that sustained damage.

FINANCE

2018 BUDGET

Each Committees is busy preparing their budget requests for next year. Your prayers are appreciated as they

look over what they did this year and what they want to accomplish next year.

IRA CHARITABLE ROLLOVER Making donations directly to the church from your IRA can: (1) be an easy and convenient way to make a gift

from one of your major assets; (2) be excluded from your gross income, a tax free rollover; and (3) count

toward your required minimum distribution.

For your gift to qualify for benefits under the extension:

1. You must be 70 ½ years or older at the time of the gift;

2. The transfer must go directly from your IRA to Christ United Methodist Church;

3. Your total IRA gift(s) cannot exceed $100,000;

4. Your gift must be outright.

These contributions can be used toward your annual pledge to the church and/or designated for a church fund

such as the Capital Improvement Fund.

JOYFULLY2UMC Accelerate your giving with the mobile giving app developed by the General Council of Finance and Administration of

The United Methodist Church. The Joyfully2UMC app makes giving easy. The app is free and can be used to make

contributions to any participating United Methodist congregation.

The GPS-enabled app, which works with credit and debit cards, lets members quickly locate and donate to their own

church. It can even be used to find a nearby United Methodist Church when traveling.

EDUCATION

Interview with God

I dreamed I had an interview with God.

“So you would like to interview me?” God asked.

“If you have the time,” I said. God smiled.

“My time is eternity … what questions do you have in mind for me?”

“What surprises you most about humankind?”

God answered…

“That they get bored with childhood, they rush to grow up, and then long to be children again.”

“That they lose their health to make money…and then lose their money to restore their health”

“That by thinking anxiously about the future, they forget the present, such that they live in neither the present nor the

future.”

“That they live as if they will never die, and die as though they had never lived.”

God’s hand took mine, and we were silent for a while. And then I asked.

“As a parent what are some of life’s lessons you want your children to learn?”

“To learn they cannot make anyone love them. All they can do is let themselves be loved.”

“To learn that it is not good to compare themselves to others.”

“To learn to forgive by practicing forgiveness.”

“To learn that it only takes a few seconds to open profound wounds in those they love, and it can take many years to heal

them.”

“To learn that a rich person is not one who has the most, but is one who needs the least.”

“To learn that there are people who love them dearly, but simply do not yet know how to express or show their feelings.”

“To learn that two people can look at the same thing and see it differently.”

6

“To learn that it is not enough that they forgive one another, but they must also forgive themselves.”

“Thank you for your time,” I said humbly. “Is there anything else you’d like your children to know?”

God smiles and said…”Just know that I am here.” “Always.”

WEDNESDAY NIGHT CLASSES

At this time we do not know when work will start to correct damage that occurred during Hurricane Irma. We don’t want

to start classes, then stop them for construction, restart, stop, etc. Once we know the schedule of repairs then we can

accurately plan for classes.

CHILDREN’S CHURCH Other than missing ceiling tiles, the classroom has been cleaned up and put back together. We finished our study on the

ABC’s of Handling Money and will be using parts of the Vacation Bible School program Rainforest Adventure for

several weeks. We will sing the songs, learn the memory verses, hear the stories, make crafts, do science activities and

more. Each week will be an adventure in the Rainforest.

LAY SERVANT CLASSES

Lay Servants lead Bible classes and help with our worship services. You saw them in action as they covered each Sunday

when Pastor Lia was on her renewal leave this summer. If this interests you, the Basic Class will be offered November 10

and 11 at Wesley Memorial UMC in Fort Myers. An Advance Class on Leading Worship will be given that day as well for

those who need continuing credit. Go the website floridalayservants.com to register.

IN THE CHURCH

CHURCH CHARGE CONFERENCE Sunday, November 5th at 3:00 p.m. we will meet with several other churches at Carlson Memorial UMC in Labelle for a

time of worship and sharing before we go to our individual meetings.

At the individual meeting, we discuss the current state of our church and the plans for next year. Active members (those

who officially joined the church) will be voting on the members to remove from our membership rolls, the leadership for

2018 and the pastor’s compensation for 2018.

CHOIR

Choir practices are in full swing at 6:30 pm in the choir room Thursday evenings. Starting Thursday, October 12th at

7:15pm, practice for the Christmas Cantata will begin.

The Christmas Cantata will be December 10th at 3:00 p.m. so put this date on your calendar.

CHURCH COMMITTEES

This month, Charlene Golden, chairperson of the Education Committee provides insight into this committee.

Our church’s vision statement is to invite all people to follow Jesus Christ, build them up into his body and image and

send them out to serve. The Education Committee and Small Groups are involved with the building them up part. It is

amazing how many people know of Jesus but don’t actually know him. They don’t know they can have a personal

relationship with Jesus. The Bible is just a book on the shelf instead of an instruction manual on how to live life.

This committee meets on an as needed basis. Once a year we review the Child/Youth Protection Policy and do a calendar

review so we know what each group is planning. We try to attend training events when they are provided in our area.

We have Children’s Church on Sunday mornings to teach the children how to use the Bible, memorize scripture, learn

Bible stories and how to apply the lesson to today. We try to use the various senses to learn the stories.

7

Wednesday nights from September to May we have classes from nursery to adult. Each group learns the Bible in their

particular way whether it is hands on, role play, videos, or discussion. Right now only the youth groups and the Spanish

Bible Class are meeting on Wednesday nights. The other rooms need to be cleaned and put back together before they can

be used again. A reminder to the classes that are meeting to fill out your attendance books.

Small Groups provide more intimate gatherings where deeper discussion occurs, cares and concerns are shared and a

family nucleus is built. People feel more comfortable asking the hard questions about Bible passages that trouble them.

Many of our small groups could share times they helped each other with medical emergencies, loss of a job, babysitting

and other needs. They also shared in the joys of a new baby, moving to a new home, new job, sharing the bounty of their

gardens and more. A reminder to contact the church office with your attendance numbers.

It is fun to share what we learned in a Bible lesson and discover how the Bible is the living word as we understand it more

and deeper the older we get and the more experiences we have. We are not Bible scholars and we may not have the

answer but we enjoy digging in a finding the answers – together.

MISSIONS AND OUTREACH GOD’S PEOPLE GOT TALENT 3 We are postponing the GPGT3 until after the first of the year. Too many people who are involved need to take care of

home repairs and other issues to have time to devote to their act for the show or to help with the event.

Those who purchased tickets may keep them until we have the event or return them for a refund.

BLOOD DRIVE SUNDAY, OCTOBER 22 from 11 am to 3 pm in the Fellowship Hall parking lot. You can walk in or

you can schedule your time by going to https://www.oneblood.org/donate-now enter the church’s zip code – 33936, and

the date of the blood drive. The church’s name should come up. Click on CHOOSE to go to the scheduling page. We

also have sign-up sheets on the table in the sanctuary and in the church office.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY SATURDAY, OCTOBER 28 at Veteran’s Park from 12:00 to 5:00pm.

Help is needed to prepare items ahead of time, take items to the park, set up our canopies, help at our booth during the

day, take the canopies down, and return everything to the church. Sign-up sheets are available in the church and the

church office.

CHURCH DIRECTORY Pictures will be taken Friday, October 27 from 2 to 8:40pm and Saturday, October 28 from

10am to 4:40pm but you need to sign up now for the time you want to be photographed. You will receive a free 8x10

photograph and church directory. You will have the opportunity to purchase pictures for your personal use. You can sign

up online at https://booknow-lifetouch.appointment-plus.com/y3r74jcq/ or fill in your information on one of the sign-up

sheets on the table in the church or in the church office.

FLORIDA UNITED METHODIST CHILDREN’S HOME – CHRISTMAS GIFT CARDS

The staff at the FLUMCH has found that their residents have enjoyed receiving gift cards. The children love being able to

go shopping to buy their own gifts. Many churches and groups have also found this to be a more convenient way to

support the children at Christmas.

They request that you please purchase gift cards in any increments of $10, $20 or $25. Especially useful and flexible for

the children are VISA, Master Card or American Express gift cards. Other ideas are Target, Walmart and Best Buy (or

any other major chain store). Their goal is to be able to give every child in their care $150.00 in gift cards. They also

strive to make Christmas morning special. Each child receives a stocking made by friends of the Children's Home.

There will be a box in the back of the sanctuary for you to place your gift cards. Please note on the card or envelope how

much the card is worth as that information is not always on the card itself. The deadline to drop off cards is Sunday,

November 26. Linda Rogers, our Children’s Home representative, needs time to record the information and get the cards

to the Children’s Home.

8

ONE STARRY NIGHT – TWO MORE PLANNING MEETINGS

Those who have been attending the planning meetings have picked their spots. Sign-up sheets are

available in the sanctuary on Sundays and in the church office during the week.

A couple projects are available to take home and prepare for One Starry Night. The request board is

also up for items we need.

Our next planning meeting will be Saturday, October 21st at 10 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Each area should be

making their wish list of items they will need for their area so we can post them on the request board.

Since we need a lot of cookies to serve our guests at the Inn, we will be taking containers of your homemade cookies and

brownies ahead of time and freezing them starting in November. We know how busy December gets so this is one thing

you can do ahead of time.

This event is only successful because EVERYONE in the church participates. Whether it is taking a card from the request

board, doing prep work, signing up to be a character in a specific area, setting up or helping to put everything away at the

end. EVERYONE’s help is needed to share the Christmas story with our community.

One Starry Night is an interactive telling of the Christmas story in our town of Bethlehem which is open to the public and

it is free. It will be held Friday, December 15 and Saturday, December 16 from 5 to 8pm. This year it will be on the side

lawn around the church sign. It is a major outreach to our community.

CHURCH CRAFT FAIR Going along with the Christmas theme, mark your calendar for our annual Craft Fair on Saturday, December 2nd from 9

am to 2 pm in the Fellowship Hall. Church attendees can register early before the other vendors are given a chance to

register for a table. The cost is $25 for an 8 foot table or $35 with electric access. The registration forms will be available

in the church office or can be emailed to you. Last year we had a wonderful variety of handmade items and Christmas

gifts.

The youth run the kitchen concession as a fundraiser for their activities. Don MacKenzie could use more adult help in the

kitchen to supervise the youth.

MISSIONARY IN CHINA – ISABEL WILLETTS

A little less than a month in to my second semester teaching at Soochow University, I am back settled in to Suzhou and

my new routine.

This semester, I am teaching three different classes: Sophomore Writing, Sophomore Speaking, and American History

and Culture. Lesson planning and preparation has been more time consuming than last semester because I am teaching

several different lessons per week on two different campuses of Soochow University. But thankfully, I have almost all of

the same students as last year!

For a teacher like me, having the same students is very important. The classroom culture I worked to create with my

students over the course of the last semester can be built upon and expanded. This means I do not have to start from

scratch with a classroom full of bright but painfully shy twenty year olds. My students already know that making mistakes

is a celebrated part of the learning process in my classroom and that their contributions are valuable assets for my teaching

style. These students who have had classes with me in the past are more willing to try alternative learning methods and get

out of their comfort zone to learn something in a new way.

9

I also have learned so much from these students about teaching at the college level, teaching in the students’ second

language, and cross-cultural curriculum development and implementation. We know each other’s quirks and strengths, so

I am confident that we will all be able to grow as learners through the coursework.

The joy and fulfillment I feel after getting back into the classroom, and the enthusiastic response to this work from my

students, has re-affirmed that Teaching is a Spiritual Gift that God has given me to serve others. Though so much has

changed in my life over the past nine months of mission service, it is comforting to see this common thread throughout

my work in the church.

Thinking about the continued presence of this Spiritual Gift in my life led me to re-take the Spiritual Gifts

Assessment offered online by the UMC. It had been a while since I last examined my Spiritual Gifts this way.

Some of the results surprised me! I received Tongues, Interpretation of Tongues, and Shepherding from the assessment.

As the daughter of two UMC ministers and an active member of youth groups and Bible studies growing up, I had taken

the Spiritual Gifts Assessment several times before in my life, but I had never seen these three gifts as some of my

strongest.

Looking around me, to the call God has on my life and the way I have chosen to follow that call, these gifts make sense

for the work I am doing now. Though I did not previously recognize those fruits in myself, God is always working on our

hearts and equipping us for the kingdom-building work ahead. I pray you will be open to the nudging of the Holy Spirit as

God continues to transform us all for the mission work of life as Christ’s ambassadors!

Since my last blog post about my time in Gansu, I was blessed by a visit to Taiwan with my sister, Tiffania. This was a

much-needed week of relaxation and fun! We went to a beach, visited natural hot springs, and spent a day in the

mountainous tea-growing region outside of the city. Because my sister served in the Global Mission Fellow’s predecessor,

the Mission Intern program, she completely understands the challenges and joys of international mission service. It was so

refreshing to speak openly about my mission work and to be able to introduce myself as a missionary, even if just for a

week.

In about a month, the 2017-2019 class of Global Mission Fellows will meet in Cambodia for our Mid Term Event. This

means missionaries from around the world will be traveling to one place to meet, process, and re-focus for the second half

of our service. Please keep this conference in your prayers as there are visa issues, travel arrangements, and other

logistical obstacles to overcome before we can be together.

Although I am thousands of miles away, my heart aches for the communities affected by the recent hurricanes, in my

home state of Florida and also Texas and Puerto Rico.

TRUSTEES

CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT CAMPAIGN

The Trustees have an ongoing list of repairs, upgrades and projects around our church plus the repairs needed

from Hurricane Irma. We need to build up the capital improvement fund to work on these projects and to cover

the deductible and repairs from the hurricane.

Checks should be made out to the church “CUMC” and note it is for the Capital Improvement Fund. These

donations are above your regular tithe pledged to the church. Your regular tithe is for the day to day operations

of the church.

10

WORSHIP

Our Spanish members invite you to join them Sunday, October 15 at 3:00pm in the Fellowship Hall for a time of

fellowship and refreshments. They want to celebrate their culture as well as say thank you for being a great church family.

BOY SCOUT TROOP 11 AND CUB SCOUT PACK 11

Cub Scout Pack 11 will have a Yard Sale Saturday, October 14 from 7 am to 3 pm in the Fellowship Hall parking lot.

They have many projects planned for this school year and need your support.

PARENTS OF YOUTH The church needs to have 2 forms submitted to the church office – photo/media release form,

and medical authorization form. These forms are available from the youth leaders. The medical form needs to be notarized

so DO NOT SIGN it until you are with a notary. The church will have a notary available every Wednesday night in

September in the Fellowship Hall from 6:00 to 6:30 pm.

Are You Smarter Than A Cyber Criminal?

As we recognize National Cyber Security Awareness Month, the Lee County Sheriff Office reminds you to surf safely by

familiarizing yourself with traps criminals use to trick you. This simple yes or no quiz can help you determine if you are

smarter than a cyber-thief.

1. You receive a Facebook message from an old friend you have not talked to in a long time. The message says, “Hey, this is so

funny! Check it out: http//bit.fm.pR2W34wm”. You remember this person had a good sense of humor. Do you click on the

link?

2. While browsing online, you get a pop up message allegedly from Microsoft Windows that your computer is infected with a virus.

You are directed to call a technician right away at the toll-free phone number provided. Do you call the number to begin the

cleanup?

3. You are shopping online when a small window pops up that says “Congratulations! Claim your prize now.” It shows a

picture of what you were shopping for and a timer counting down from 10 seconds urging you to respond immediately. Is it

your lucky day?

4. The IRS sends you an email saying you owe taxes with instructions to pay up or a warrant will be issued for your arrest. The

email provides a link for you to pay. Do you respond?

5. While looking online for rental property, you find a bargain that is considerably lower than other similar properties. The ad

states the owner only communicates via email or text and requires you to fill out an online application that asks for your social

security number, date of birth, etc. Do you start an email dialogue and provide your personal identifying information as

requested?

6. You receive an email stating you are the winner of the Publisher’s Clearinghouse Sweepstakes. The email directs you to call a

toll-free number to claim your prize, followed by a request to pay taxes and shipping charges. Did you hit the jackpot?

7. Your financial institution sends you an email stating your account is frozen due to suspicious activity. The bank’s logo,

address and a toll-free number makes the email look legit, but the email is addressed to “Dear Bank Customer.” Is this for
