Literal Idiom Art

Students will enjoy drawing the literal meanings for idioms in this art activity. Four different character sheets are included (Santa, Mrs. Claus, elf, snowman) as well as an idiom list to help students think of ideas. Students can draw idioms and label them (see completed elf sample). They can even create 3-D idiom art by gluing on objects, magazine cut outs, clip art, etc. (i.e. a button for “button your lip”) as shown in the completed Santa sample.

Literal Idiom Art Sample This sample uses more 3-D items (such as cotton for the clouds, a button for the lip, wrapping paper for the bag, eyes cut from a magazine, etc. Students really enjoy using their creativity to find items that will work for this activity!

a bone to pick all ears all eyes on me a pain in the neck apple of my eye barking up the wrong tree blow your top break a leg break the ice broken-hearted butterflies in my stomach button your lip can it can of worms catch your breath cat's got your tongue chicken out chip on your shoulder cold feet cold shoulder dish out down in the dumps

driving me up a wall elbow grease fish out of water fly off the handle for the birds frog in my throat get off my back go ape head in the clouds hit the ceiling hit the road hit the roof hold your horses horsing around in a pickle in hot water in the doghouse in two shakes of a lamb's tail jump down my throat keep your head knock yourself out lend me a hand
