tria-HungarydeclareswaronSerbia;WorldWarIbegins;on1SeptemberhejoinedtheStudentBattalion;on1November,hewaspromotedtocorporalandasearlyas3November,hewaspromotedtosergeantandtransferredtothe1stcompanyofthe2ndbattalion,the5thinfantryregiment,2ndbrigadeoftheDrinadivision.

1915 On1January,PavleBeljanskiwaspromotedtostaffsergeantandthenretreatedwith

thearmythroughAlbania;on19August,hewaspronouncedunfittoservebytheHighCommandMedicalpanelinSkadarandasanon-combatantinCorfu,hewasassignedtotheLiaisonunitoftheDanubedivision.

1916 On16July,bytheDecreeoftheMinisterofWar,hewasrelievedofmilitaryduty;he

resumedhislawstudiesinParis.

1917 On17July,hegraduatedfromtheSorbonneasalawyerspecializinginthediplomat-

ic-consularfield.

1918 On15June,hereceivedhismaster’sdegreeattheSorbonneandregisteredhisdoc-

toralthesisinthediplomatic-consularfield.

1919 Hisdoctoralstudieswereinterruptedduetohisnewposition;on3Marchhebegan

1920 On1September,hebecamsecretaryintheBerlinEmbassy;on14February,hewas

appointedsecretary,4thclass,intheWarsawEmbassy,on29JulyhewastransferredbacktoBerlin.

Beljanskidonatedhiscollectionofartworksfromthefirsthalfofthe20thcenturytotheSerbianpeople,throughthemediationoftheAutonomousProvinceofVojvodina;itwassignedbyGezaTikvickionbehalfoftheAssemblyoftheAPV;theartisticfundcomprised151worksofart(136paintingsand15sculptures);animportantclauseinthecontractrequiredtheconstructionofaseparatebuildingtohouseandexhibitthecollection;PavleBeljanskiwaselectedmemberoftheCounciloftheAcademyofFineArtsinBelgrade.

1958 On6May,theNationalCommitteeofthemunicipalityofNoviSadreleasedanopen

competitionalloverYugoslaviaforthedesignofthebuildingoftheMemorialCollection;on8June,themembersofthepanelPavleBeljanski,TodorJovanović,VojislavMidić,OliverMinić,AleksandarĐorđević,MilivojNikolajevićandSavaPopovićrevealedthatthreedesignshadbeensubmitted(byarchitectsBogdanBogdanović,MiloradMacuraandRatomirBogojević)andthatallthreehave“approachedtheproblemathandinanoriginalandstudiousmanner”;thedesignbyarchitectBogojevićwonfirstprize,butnoneofthedesignswereproposedfortheactualrealization;IvoKurtović’srequestforpostponementwasaccepted;on15June,IvoKurtovićsubmittedthedesignforthebuildingofThePavleBeljanskiMemorialCollectiontothepanel;inAugust,thecon-structionofThePavleBeljanskiMemorialCollectionbuildingbegan;on2September,BeljanskiwasappointedmemberoftheSerbianCouncilofCulturecommitteeforthepurchaseofartworks;on1November,heretiredholdingtherankofseniorcounsellorandtheministerplenipotentiary.

1962 Thefirstinventoryofexhibitswasmade;photosoftheartworksweredonebyDrag-

oljubKažić,aswellasbyDušanTasić,TošoDabac,DušanStanimirović,AleksandarAcaSimićand“Jugoreklam”;withtheestablishmentoftheDocumentaryFundasys-tematicgatheringofarchivalanddocumentarymaterialsontheartistsfromthecol-lectionbegan;thesecondeditionofthecatalogueofThePavleBeljanskiMemorialCollectionwaspublishedalongwithaninformationleafletontheMemorialCollec-tionwithaprefacebyVeraJovanović;on8June,thefirststatutewaspassed;paint-ingsfromthecollectionwereexhibitedattheSava Šumanović Memorial.

1963 TheartworkswerephotographedbySilvesterMoreandLjubišaSavić;theexhibition

oftheMemorialCollectionwasseenby11,385visitors;on16February,theFrenchartcriticandwriterJeanCassouvisitedtheexhibitionandwrotethefollowingintotheguestbook:“IwasenchantedbythisstrollthroughtheYugoslavartofanera,soemotionalanduniqueinthewayitispresentedtousbythiscollectionwhichisproofofthetasteandspiritofitscreator.Thereisasenseofspirituality;hereisanentireclearly-formedworld,andoneofrarequality,witharefinedandauthenticpo-etry.”TheSwedishambassadorSvenBacklund,SwedishMinisterofCultureRagnarEdenmanwithhiswifeandthemembersoftheFrenchParliamentwereamongthevisitors;on31March,theMemorialCollectionwasvisitedbytheMexicanpresidentAdolfoLópezMateosandhiswifeEvaSamanodeLópezMateos,duringanofficialvisittoYugoslavia,accompaniedbythepresidentoftheFPRY,JosipBrozTito,andhiswifeJovankaBroz.TheguestsweremetbyPavleBeljanskihimself,aswellasbythepresidentoftheNationalAssemblyoftheAPV,StevanDoronjski,withhiswife,thepresidentoftheExecutiveCounciloftheAPV,ĐuricaJojkićandhiswife,rectoroftheuniversity,LazaStojković,MayorTimaVrbaškiandothers.“Wemustpaytributetoamanwhocollectedanddonatedsuchbeautifulpaintingstohispeople,”JosipBrozTitowroteintheguestbookonthatoccasion;thepermanentexhibitionwasalteredbythereplacementof20artworks;amongothers,worksbySretenStojanović:A Por-trait of Nataša BoškovićandthereliefentitledNecklacewereincluded;on8August,theMemorialCollectionwasincludedintheregisterofinstitutionswithindepend-entfunding,asaspecialtypeofartgallery;on3April,attherequestofProf.GyetvaiKároly,headoftheCivilLawDepartmentoftheFacultyofLawinNoviSad,thestu-dentsweregivenalectureonPavleBeljanski’sDonationContractinwhichmutualobligationswereexceptionallywelljustified;aproposalwasmadeforthefirstmono-graphoftheMemorialcollectionentitled“ModernSerbianArtandPavleBeljanski’sCollection”;thefollowingauthorsweresuggested:PavleVasić,MomčiloStevanović,PeđaMilosavljević,KatarinaAmbrozić,LazarTrifunović,MiodragB.Protić,SinišaVukovićandVeraJovanović(unpublished).

painter;on18September,theMemorialCollectionwasopenedtopublicforthesec-ondtime(afterapausetoconstructanannextothebuildingandaventilationsystemforair-conditioning);PavleBeljanski’sdedicationwasplacedonawallinthelobby;on6October,PredragIsakovićonbehalfofthefamilyandVeraJovanovićonbehalfoftheMemorialCollection,signedthecontractwhichfulfilledPavleBeljanski’swishtosetasidefromhislegacypiecesoffurniture,paintings,booksandpersonalitemsasfutureexhibitsinthePavleBeljanskiMemorial;PavleBeljanski’slegacywastransferredfromBelgrade:14paintings,4sculptures,2tapestries,17piecesofperiodfurniture,4objectsofappliedart,thepaintingYoung DiplomatbyMarinoTartaglia,atotalof43objects,aswellas354booksonartforthefuturePavleBeljanskiMemorial;TinkaPivničkipho-tographedtheartworksforthepurposeofdocumentationandreproduction.

1967 On3March,partoftheofficespacewastemporarilygiventothenewly-established
