“We need the best woman, the best man, for the job!” That one line drives much of what happens in the business world. But, come to think of it, it’s the same principle that drives choices in the academic world (which prospective students get into competitive programs?), in the sports world (which athletes make the team?), in the music world (who is the most accomplished option for the orchestra?), and in virtually every other world I can think of. We want our businesses, our schools, our teams, our ensembles made up of the people who represent the cream of the crop.
And that is understandable. The best quality of people lead to the best quality of product—whatever product it is that we are producing. Not many people, after all, will show up to watch a baseball team filled with fourth-rate players or to listen to an orchestra whose violin section screeches its way through each piece! We want quality.
So, with that in mind, let me ask you this: How does that principle work when it comes to the church, the body of Christ? Do those who belong to the body of Christ have to represent the best the world can offer? Does God choose only those who represent the cream of the crop?
Now, let me make one thing clear: I’m not asking that question as an insinuation to excuse poor leadership, bad preaching, lack of planning or failed attempts at theological education. Certainly, when it comes to what we do for God, we need to bring our A-game. We need to do the very best we can. We need to offer God the finest efforts we can muster.
My question, rather, comes from a realization that I am continually surprised by the actual people that God is willing to use. (After all, have you looked in the moral mirror lately?). Have you ever heard the name of someone who is doing something for God—volunteering for an outreach program, leading in a ministry—and remembered that person, from some encounter in the past, and thought, “Wow! I never would have expected that?!” Have you ever felt that sense of surprise? Have you ever been shocked that God seems willing to use whoever shows up?
If you have, then today’s biblical story is for you. After all, have you ever heard the name Rahab?

There are 23 red roses, one for each year of his life, and one white rose for every year our hope rests in the reassurance of the resurrection. With an everlasting hope, your sister Julie “Big.”
