Fourth Sunday OF ADVENT

SAINT STEPHEN (first century) December 26 “A man filled with faith and the Holy Spirit” (Acts 6:5): thus Luke introduces Stephen, first of seven deacons chosen by the community for its ministry of charity, first to lay down his life in witness to Christ. As the church’s first martyr, Stephen’s life and death mirror the preaching and passion of Jesus, “the faithful witness” (Greek, martyr) (Revelation

1:5). Like Jesus, Stephen works “great signs and wonders among the people” (Acts 6:8). Like Jesus, when falsely accused, Stephen’s face radiates angelic serenity (Acts 6:15), though his tongue, like Jesus’, is a two-edged sword. As the dying Jesus forgave his executioners, even making excuses for them, then commended his spirit into his Father’s hands (Luke 23:34, 46), so Stephen intercedes for his murderers and begs Jesus to receive his spirit (Acts 7:60, 59). How fruitful both passions! The penitent thief inherits Paradise; Saul, who consented to Stephen’s killing, is transformed into the fearless preacher Paul. Fourth Sunday of Advent December 22, 2019 They shall name him Emmanuel, which means “God is with us.” — Matthew 1:23

TRUST IN GOD On this final Sunday of Advent our scriptures focus on the historical birth of Jesus, who is son of David and Son of God, child and king, Jesus and Emmanuel. Isaiah the prophet begs Ahaz to ask for a sign, to allow God to offer him reassurance of the survival of the Davidic dynasty. The king hypocritically refuses to “tempt the LORD” in that way (Isaiah 7:12), but the prophet foretells the birth of a son, an heir to the throne, who will prove the Lord’s enduring protection of God’s chosen lineage on the throne of David. The child will be called Emmanuel. Matthew’s reference to this history in his description of the birth of Jesus highlights the contrast between the faithless refusal of trust shown by Ahaz, and the complete trust in God shown by Mary and Joseph in bringing about the birth of Jesus Christ. Dear Parishioners CHRISTMAS BREAK MASS SCHEDULE … From December 23 through January 1, we WILL NOT have a 7am Weekday Mass. 7am Weekday Masses will resume on January 2, 2020. CHRISTMAS EVE AND DAY… We begin our celebration of Christmas with our annual Christmas Eve Concert at 8:15pm, followed by our bilingual Christmas Evening Mass at 9 pm … CHRISTMAS DAY ... Masses at 8 am, 9 am in Spanish, 10:30 am (Family Mass) and 12 noon. Come join us as we welcome the baby Jesus into our lives once again. RECTORY OFFICES … The rectory offices will be closed on Wednesday, December 25 and Thursday, December 26. MARY MOTHER OF GOD … On January 1, we celebrate the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God, a Holy Day of Obligation. MASS FOR THE HEARING IMPAIRED ... The last Sunday of each month we have Mass at 12 noon with sign language ... pass on the word to relatives and friends who might be interested ... sign language is beautiful and inspiring to watch. RECEPTION OF HOLY COMMUNION … Just a reminder that we receive Holy Communion either in our hands, by holding out both hands one on top of the other, or, in our mouths, by sticking out our tongues to receive in the mouth. Both ways are valid. Understand if you are carrying a child in your arms, and both hands are not free, the priest will most likely want you to receive in the mouth. This is to limit the possibility of our Lord, in the form of the Eucharist, falling to the ground. Also remember that the proper response to the priest before receiving Holy Communion is “Amen,” not “Thank you.” BAPTISMS … all Catholics should be baptized … parents should be registered in the parish and attending weekly Sunday Mass in order to have the child baptized … godparents must be practicing Catholics

who have received the sacraments of Baptism, Holy Communion and Confirmation and, if married, married in the church … godparents must be members of a parish and must be attending weekly Mass … if you are going to be a godparent, it makes perfect and reasonable sense that you are practicing the faith and that you are a model for the child. SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY ... the Catholic Church teaches that marriage is between a man and a woman, a sign of LOVE and LIFE ... Catholics should be married in the church and, if married only civilly, should speak to one of the priests about receiving the sacrament in the Church (called convalidation) ... please know that you are welcome to ask questions and to receive direction and advice about the SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY … Please remember to secure a date for your wedding before making any arrangements with caterers, limo drivers, family and friends. FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS … the usual practice for Catholic burials is a wake service in a funeral home, a Funeral Mass in the parish church, burial of the body or cremains in a cemetery (preferably a Catholic cemetery) … speak with one of the priests for assistance before a death occurs and speak with a reputable funeral home director about pre-arrangements … cremains (ashes) are held in the same reverence and respect as a body and so they should be treated carefully, respectfully, reverentially and buried as soon as possible after cremation. PARISH REGISTRATION … all members of the parish should be registered and receive parish mailings and envelopes … if you are an adult (18 years and older), you should register to receive the envelopes and other information from the parish … you need to be registered in order to receive recommendation letters, financial statements, tuition rates and other parish related issues … HOW TO REGISTER? Come to the rectory office on Castle Hill Ave. LATE FOR CHURCH? … Why? Please resolve to arrive early for Mass, say a prayer, read the Scripture and be ready when we start it will make the Mass more prayerful and meaningful for all. Remember, if you miss the readings, you miss the teachings of Christ. St. Jerome wrote, “Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.” Getting to Church on time matters. VISITING OF THE SICK OR HOMEBOUND … If you know of anyone who is sick or homebound and would like to receive communion, Please call the rectory to give us your information as well as the information of the person who wishes to receive communion. They must reside in our parish area.

Llegar a la rectoría en Castle Hill Avenue. ¿TARDE A LA IGLESIA? ... ¿Por qué? Por favor, arreglar llegar temprano a la misa, para orar, leer la Santa Escritura y estar listo cuando empezamos --- hará la misa más devota y significativa para todos … Recuerde, si usted no oye las lecturas, usted no oye las enseñanzas de Cristo. Cuarto Domingo de Adviento 22 de diciembre de 2019 A quien pondrán el nombre de Emmanuel, que quiere decir Dios-con-nosotros. — Mateo 1:23

CONFIANZA EN DIOS En este último domingo de Adviento las lecturas se enfocan en el nacimiento histórico de Jesús: el hijo de David e Hijo de Dios, niño y rey, Jesús y Emmanuel. El profeta Isaías le suplica a Ajaz que pida una señal, para permitir a Dios que le asegure la sobrevivencia de la dinastía de David. El rey hipócrita rehúsa “tentar al SEÑOR” de esa manera (Isaías 7:12), pero el profeta predice el nacimiento de un hijo, un heredero al trono, quien probará la duradera protección divina del linaje elegido del trono de David. El niño será llamado Emmanuel. Mateo se refiere a esta historia en su descripción de los puntos principales del nacimiento de Jesús que contrasta a Ajaz quien rehúsa confiar por falta de fe, y la completa confianza en Dios que María y José demostraron al cooperar con el nacimiento de Jesucristo. LECTURAS DE HOY Primera lectura — La señal es que la virgen estará embarazada y dará a luz un hijo varón (Isaías 7:10-14). Salmo — Va a entrar el Señor: él es el Rey de la Gloria (Salmo 24 [23]). SAN ESTEBAN (Siglo I) 26 de diciembre El libro de los Hechos de los Apóstoles describe a Esteban, uno de los primeros siete diáconos de la Iglesia naciente, como un hombre “lleno de fe y del Espíritu Santo”.

Como diácono, según lo pedido por la comunidad, se dedicó al cuidado de los huérfanos y de las viudas. Además de eso, se dedicó a predicar la salvación por medio de Jesucristo. Su predicación incomodó a algunos líderes religiosos quienes sobornaron a otras personas para que declararan que Esteban había blasfemado contra Moisés, pero no fue así. Sin embargo, Esteban les recordó que

Dios no sólo estaba en el Templo de Jerusalén y además les reprochó su incumplimiento de la ley y el rechazo al mensaje de Jesús. Esto les molestó mucho y “Esteban les dijo que veía los cielos abiertos y al Hijo del hombre de pie a la derecha de Dios”. Llenos de rabia se lanzaron contra él, lo sacaron de la ciudad y lo apedrearon hasta matarlo. Mientras agonizaba, oraba así: “Señor Jesús, recibe mi espíritu”. NAVIDAD Una joven madre, con los ojos brillantes de fatiga, que se arregla el pelo; un padre que se encuentra solo con su bella esposa y su bebé, enderezando el establo para que sea útil de alguna manera; pastores que traen queso y quizás también leche cuajada; ovejas que mi-ran a sus pastores mientras bailan; un burro que está mirando como su pesebre se convirtió en una cuna; un adorable bebé envuelto a quien uno llama Salvador, Cristo y Señor: Esta es la manifestación de la bondad y la ternura de Dios. ¡Este es el nacimiento más fantástico en la historia de la humanidad, el que cam-bió la faz del mundo! ¡Hasta aquí Dios se humilló y se comprometió con nosotros! ¡Este es Emmanuel!
