Plan to attend the 2016 Ministry Fair

will be an event full of fun and fellow-
ship, in addition to a chance to learn
about and sign up for one of Holy
Apostles’ many wonderful ministries.
In advance of the Fair, take some time
to think about what you are interested
in and where God is calling you to
serve. At the Fair, you’ll have the
chance to talk with Ministry Leaders,
learn more about our various minis-
tries and pick a place or time to share
your gifts with the parish.
“As each one has received a gift, use it
to serve one another as good stewards
of God’s varied grace” - 1 Peter 4:10
Whether you decide to sign up for a
ministry that meets or serves frequent-
ly or just make a one-time commit-
ment, your involvement is essential to
the success of our mission of service
to each other and to our community.

about ministry at Holy Apostles, you
can visit our website or contact Tiffa-
ny Siegel ([email protected]).

Page 2 THE ACTS
Welcome to the Stewardship
Corner, where for the next
few months we’ll discuss the
role of stewardship as part of
our faith walk in the body of
Christ. Please keep reading!
Although Christian steward-
ship traditionally encompasses
stewardship of time, talent,
and treasure, our focus this
month will be on the last:
Treasure
“For where your treasure is,
there your heart will be al-
so.” Matthew 6:21
What is our “treasure?” Alt-
hough “treasure” can refer to
many things that we value, for
most folks who live in east
Shelby County, it certainly
includes their financial re-
sources. One objective of this
year’s stewardship campaign
will be to remind us of the
call to store our treasure
where we want our hearts to
follow. Note the order of this
verse; Jesus very specifically
tells us that how we spend
our treasure drives what we
care about. Therefore, if we
want to care deeply about
something - such as our life in
Christ - we need to make it an
object of our giving. Stated a
little differently, “where our
wallets go, our hearts will fol-
low.”
Winston Churchill said “We
make a living by what we get,
but we make a life by what we
give.” As we try to make a
Christian life by giving, we
have to consider exactly what
the Church’s call to steward-
ship requires of us. Are we
called to give up all of our
earthly treasures like the rich
young ruler of scripture or
take a monastic vow of pov-
erty? Although some Chris-
tians do receive an extreme
call like that, most of us do
not (to our relief!). However,
according to Biblical princi-
ples, stewardship does entail
giving sacrificially, and for
many of us who are blessed
with lots of material resources
the tithe of one tenth of our
incomes is a great place to
start our sacrificial giving.
(For a specifically Episcopali-
an view on the topic of stew-
ardship and tithing, see the
resources available on the
website,
www.episcopalchurch.org).
Ten percent. It’s enough to be
noticed - if it weren’t, it
wouldn’t really be steward-
ship, right? - but it is not
meant to cause a hardship. To
the contrary, it is meant to be
a blessing. For example, the
popular financial talk show
host and budget-conscious
Dave Ramsey advocates giv-
ing to one’s church propor-
tionally as a healthy expendi-
ture - according to his web-
site, he recognizes that tithing
serves to benefit us as individ-
uals because it teaches us how
to keep God foremost in our
lives. Ramsey says, “If you
cannot live off 90% of your
income, then you cannot live
off 100%.” Something to
think about.
The concept of the tithe may
sound old-fashioned or
“fundamentalist,” but it’s still
a part of our financial stew-
ardship as Christians. We are
called to proportional giving
as an exercise to strengthen
our faith in God as Provider
and the “Good Shepherd.”
This is something my own
family will at least have a con-
versation about, and we ask
you to consider the role of
stewardship in your life
throughout the rest of this
year and as you consider your
support of Holy Apostles in
2017. And if you already are
giving proportionally, we wel-
come your feedback as to
how proportional giving has
impacted your walk of faith.

Rector’s Forum Resumes in August
Page 3 VOLUME 14, ISSUE 7
Rector’s Forum will resume
on Sunday, August 21st with
the first of a two part series
(August 21st and 28th) pre-
sented by Tiffany Siegel, our
Lay Ministry Coordinator.
Tiffany will provide an up-
date on our development and
deployment of the “Invite-
Welcome-Connect” initiative.
As we learned last year from
Mary Parmer, inviting, wel-
coming and connecting peo-
ple who come to Holy Apos-
tles is critical to building a
healthy, vibrant and growing
congregation.
Rector’s Forum takes place
each Sunday between morn-
ing services, at 10:15 a.m. in
the Parish Life Center. Con-

Reading with the Rector August 16th
The Reading With the Rector
book club will reconvene on
Tuesday, August 16th at 6:30
p.m. in the conference room.
All are welcome to participate
in the discussion, even those
who have not read the book.
This month, we are reading A
Little Life by American novel-
ist Hanya Yanagihara; a story
of four classmates from a
small Massachusetts college
who move to New York to
make their way.
Please contact Eileen Cash-
baugh with any questions
([email protected]). A
list of the book selections for
the remainder of the year can
be found on the Holy Apos-
tles website.
Holy Apostles Welcomes Dale Shotwell We are pleased to welcome
Dale Shotwell to our parish
family! Dale moved to Col-
lierville a year ago from Nash-
ville, where she lived for the
past eight years. She is origi-
nally from McKinney, Texas.
She is very happy with her
move to our great town!
Dale currently lives with her
daughter and her family. She
also has a son and his family
nearby in Germantown. They
are all enjoying living close to
each other after over 20 years
of being apart.
Dale says she visited Holy
Apostles one Sunday while
“church shopping” and really
felt welcome. She enjoyed
the service and felt a friendli-
ness similar to her home
church in Texas.
According to Dale, “the spe-
cial things about Holy Apos-
tles are the many friendly peo-
ple, the great priests, the
beautiful location and wor-
ship space.” She is anxious to
get involved and meet more
people! Dale Shotwell

A. C. Wharton will be our
guest speaker at the Prime
Timers Pot Luck Lunch on
Thursday, August 25th at 11:30
a.m. in the Parish Life Center.
For 35 years, Shelby County

leadership skills of “a civil man
in uncivil times,” according
Commercial Appeal Columnist
David Waters. “Whatever mess
we found ourselves in over the
past three decades, we knew
we could rely on Wharton's
steady, reasoning, reassuring
presence to help us try to work
through it…. we respected
him. We admired him. We
even liked him. We still do,”
writes Waters.
Mayor Wharton will reflect on
his time as a public servant and
his aspirations for the Mid-

Reflection on Youth Social Justice and Mission Trip by Annabel Hines
The beginning of the Social
Justice Mission Trip included
my brother, Andy, and I vis-
iting the Emmanuel Center
and the National Civil Rights
Museum downtown. Though
I live in Memphis, I had nev-
er visited these beautiful plac-
es. The Emmanuel Center
gave off a hopeful aura,
which is one small but signif-
icant way they help their
youth; to lead them on the
right educational life path.
The National Civil Rights
museum had so much “in
your face” information about
our past, that the fact that
social injustice had and still
does occur couldn't be ig-
nored. However, because I
experience more racism in
everyday life living in Mem-
phis, the museum did not
have nearly the same affect it
had on the group of youth
with us, who were visiting
from the Seattle area.
The first day in Arkansas was
filled with people to see and
museums to visit, including a
quick visit to Lucie's Place,
where homeless LGBT in the
community were allowed to
go as a safe haven. The or-
ganization's founder, Penelo-
pe had a lot of inspiring plans
for the future. Later in the
week we went to Heifer In-
ternational, another great
organization dedicated to
helping those with less by
giving animals instead of just
money or food. Then the
Clinton Presidential Library
gave us a look at what it's like
to be the president and about
what Clinton has done in his
life, especially in Arkansas.
Though all the buildings and
museums I visited were very
interesting, nothing was as
impactful as the people I met
on this trip, from the Seattle
youth and adults to the other
adults from Arkansas. The
whole group felt very wel-
coming to our small Mem-
phis group. I hope I see them
all again because I had at
least one different and mean-
ingful conversation with each
one of them.
