BABY BORN TO BE KING Royal babies have been in the news lately with the announcement from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex that they are expecting. Their baby is not likely to be king. Earlier in the year, a baby born to be king, Prince George, was a young attendant at Uncle Harry and Meghan’s wedding – a future king taking a servant role. At this time of year, we think about another baby, born to be king, who came to this world as a servant Jesus. He was born in poverty to refugee parents and, as an adult, showed compassion to many who were marginalised or struggling. This was not a ‘just for show’ role, like a little page boy, this was God getting his hands dirty to bring real love, healing and hope to troubled people. He came and did it as one of us. I find that quite mind-boggling. Christians remember in advent that Jesus promised to return one day to fully establish his kingdom. We look forward to that day when “there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain”. Meanwhile we can all help to build that kingdom through acts of kindness, working for justice; serving God and one another. As Christmas approaches, I invite you to come and join us at All Saints’ Church for one of our Christmas services (see page 4), to take time to wonder at this baby born to be King. Rev. BABY BORN TO BE KING

Royal babies have been in the news lately with the announcement from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex that they are expecting. Their baby is not likely to be king. Earlier in the year, a baby born to be king, Prince George, was a young attendant at Uncle Harry and Meghan’s wedding – a future king taking a servant role. At this time of year, we think about another baby, born to be king, who came to this world as a servant – Jesus. Meanwhile we can all help to build that kingdom through acts of

kindness, working for justice; serving God and one another. As Christmas approaches, I invite you to come and join us at All Saints’ Church for one of our Christmas services (see page 4), to take time to wonder at this baby born to be King.

The New 2nd Crawley Down Rainbow Unit have started their first full term! During the summer holidays Girlguiding

launched a new programme which allows girls from 5 – 7 years of age to gain badges for the first time. Badges include Storyteller, Construction, Innovate and Make Change. This gives the girls skills that will grow though the sections as they move on to Brownies, Guide etc.

This term we have explored the outdoors, made sweet treats, celebrated Guy Fawkes Night and discussed & expanded our understanding of equality.

All Girl Guiding units are run by volunteers and we are looking for volunteers to come forward and help provide more opportunities to the girls and young women in our area.

Do you want to empower the girls of today?

Whatever your previous experience of Girl Guiding, as a volunteer you’ll meet new people, gain/expand on skills and be doing something positive for you and your community.

CRAWLEY DOWN WOMEN’S INSTITUTE AFTERNOON WI We were glad to welcome a few extra visitors to our September meeting when Jeremy Hodgkinson came to speak to us. Jeremy has played a prominent part in the village over the years, and has a vast knowledge of it's history. His talk was accompanied with photos from the past, and we heard about boxing competitions held in the village, the brick works, the railway and much more. Some of the audience had memories of the houses, or places, that were mentioned. A nice trip down memory lane, and new knowledge learnt. Six members attended the West Sussex WI Federation meeting in Worthing and heard two speakers during the day. Author Jane Robinson has many written books about the lives of woman and she talked about her latest book "Hearts and Minds". Jane told us about the Great Pilgrimage march, and the life and times of the Suffragists finally getting the vote for women. The afternoon speaker was Lady Emma Barnard the chatelaine of Parham House.

Our October speaker had to cancel due to unforeseen circumstances but we were lucky that Helena Griffiths was able to come and speak to us at short notice. Helena travelled on her own around Western Australia in 80 days. There were many things Helena had to learn for her trip, having to change the tyre pressure on her vehicle to suite the varied terrain being one of them. She had the latest navigation and tracker systems to help her on her way, and she brought these in to show us. Helena is a very adventurous woman and it was a very interesting talk.

We meet at 2pm on the 3rd Wednesday in every month at The Village Hall. If you would like more information please contact Kay Webb 01342 719029 or Jean Wakeling 01342 712834. All welcome.

With best wishes for Christmas and a Happy New Year 2019.

Jackie Kaldenberg, CD Afternoon WI

EVENING WI At our October meeting, Steve Roberts, a retired fraud squad police officer, talked to us about protecting ourselves from scams and frauds. His talk was very informative and his humorous approach held our attention. There was one fundamental message “STOP, THINK, CHECK”. Steve advised that should never get drawn into telephone conversations with people we don’t know, just say “NO THANK YOU” and NEVER click on any link sent in an email unless you know the source.

Our Annual Meeting was held on 1st November where we were pleased to hear that Jan Albury would continue as President and Yvonne Leach as Secretary with Evral Goldsmith coming on board as Treasurer. Warm thanks were extended to Jill Yates, retiring Treasurer, Belinda Watson for assisting the Secretary and to retiring committee members for their hard work and commitment in 2018. Gail Lesslie was welcomed as a new committee member. Our guest speaker, Katharine Collett, was then introduced to us. She was dressed in a very pretty afternoon tea dress, typical of the Edwardian era around which the television series Downton Abbey was set. Katharine explained that during her presentation she would entertain us by singing songs which had been featured in the series. She told us that in Edwardian times, thousands of people were employed in domestic service, but this all changed after World War I because, between 1914 and 1918, an estimated two million women replaced men in employment during the war. This would herald a time of great change. Katharine’s presentation was a mixture of social history and songs of that time.

Our next meeting will be our Christmas Party on Thursday 6th December. We meet at 7.30pm on the 1st Thursday of the month in the Glebe Centre and visitors are most welcome to come along to our meetings. For further information, please contact Jan Albury on 01342 713926.

Neighbourhood Plans

WORTH PARISH COUNCIL

NEWSLETTER - WINTER 2018

A new Councillor was needed following the resignation of Sue Smith. An election was not required and the new councillor is

Mel Hollands whose contact details are included at the end of this newsletter.

New Councillor

The new Parish Council website is now live. This offers a much better gateway into the work of the Parish. Anyone attempting

to access the old website will be redirected to the new site.

New Website

A lot has changed since the Crawley Down Neighbourhood Plan was approved in a local referendum in 2015 including the adoption of a new District Plan earlier this year. The Parish Council has commenced a review to ensure that the Crawley Down Neighbourhood Plan is up to date and still reflects the needs of the local residents. The review will follow the five themes of the current plan: Community, Housing, Economy, Environment and Transport. New housing is a Government priority.

The Council is considering whether the review should include the selection of sites for development to ensure that local housing needs are reflected in any future growth. The Council is

inviting views from all residents and will soon be sending out questionnaires. It is estimated that the review will take 18 months to 2 years with a second local referendum in 2020. The equivalent plan for Copthorne is now at an advanced stage and the draft plan is expected to move through the remaining consultation process quickly. Future reviews are likely to be based on a single, parish plan for the two villages, to minimise the costs involved.

At a recent meeting, the council resolved to continue with two plans, but reserved the decision regarding a single plan for the Parish to a future time. In order to progress both Plans the council has taken on a person specifically for this role.

Alongside the website, official council email accounts have been created. These allow the councillors to comply with the recently enacted Data Protection Act, and ANY email communication with the council or with one of your councillors should be via one of these addresses.

Our Police and Crime Commissioner is currently holding meetings to ensure that she reflect the community. One of these was held in East Grinstead at the end of October. She listened to the concerns of residents, and promised to deal with

them as far as her remit allows. She has been instrumental in the recruitment of 200 extra officers over the next two years. She talks about this in a video, which can be found here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJh4MwfV64M

Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner

The CPRE has recently published a short newsletter in which they include an article on the Green belt. It says, “We analysed new government data to find an extremely concerning trend – that almost 10,000 hectares of Green Belt land have been released for development since 2012. This is the countryside next door for 30 million people, and is only meant to be released under ‘exceptional circumstances’”. Yet Green Belts are clearly being eroded by urban sprawl, with the pressure for councils to

meet unrealistic housing targets allowing developers to target these profitable sites. Time and time again, we find the government failing in its commitment to protect the Green Belt. We plan to keep up the pressure to better protect our Green Belts, and push for developments to be built on brownfield land first. Neighbourhood Watch

Neighbourhood watch has not been in the news lately, but is still active in many areas. They produce and circulate a weekly newsletter that includes amongst other things a resume of all recent burglaries. Anyone wishing to receive this may enrol at www.intheknow.community. The 6th November issue includes advice on prevention. “A focus on burglary begins this Autumn after the clocks changed. From October 29 to November 4, Sussex Police is running Operation Magpie, the autumn burglary prevention and awareness campaign.

There were 644 burglaries across the force in September 2017, but this fell to 518 in September 2018. The Autumn campaign aims to maintain this decrease, as well as raising awareness about how you can protect your own home.

During the week there will be prevention advice to specific communities as well as social media posts, in an effort to prevent burglaries from happening in the first place.”

More specific advice is available at www.sussex.police.uk/news/autumn-burglary-campaign-begins-after-clock-change/

Gatwick Airport has recently announced plans to use its emergency runway as a second runway, thereby significantly increasing its capacity. Whilst the council is not against any development, it believes that they should all be accompanied by an expansion of the infrastructure to cope with increased demands for transport, schools, doctors etc. The current plans do not include any changes to its two main access routes the

M23 and the London to Brighton British Rail line, both of which are already at, or close to, their maximum capacity. Plans are available for consultation and comment until January 10th 2019 and may be viewed at www.gatwickairport.com/masterplan2018.
