A s president and co-founder of Bike Walk Alameda, I’d like to welcome you to this year’s Bike to Work and School Day, which takes place from 6:30 to 9 a.m. Thursday, May 12. This year marks the 18th Bike to Work Day that Bike Walk Alameda has helped organize here on the Island, and we couldn’t be more excited about the event and how it has grown. Bike Walk Alameda helped the city with its single Bike to Work Day table in 1999 and organized its own city-wide event the following year, operating three energizer stations on our own and partnering on two more to serve 172 bike commuters. In 2001 we gave away nearly 300 bags to participants, many of whom told us they were commuting by bike for the first time. Since those early years, participation in the event has exploded. Over the past few years, Alameda’s Bike to Work Day event has drawn more than 1,000 annual visitors. Every year, more Alamedans are seizing the opportunity to give bicycle commuting to work or school a spin. Bike to Work and School Day is the highlight of National Bike Month, created by The League of American Bicyclists in 1956 to advance its efforts to create a bicycle-friendly America. Here on the Island, the event offers Alamedans the chance to get excited about biking to work and school and gives Bike Walk Alameda an opportunity to connect with cyclists we wouldn’t otherwise meet. In addition to giving us the opportunity to show Alamedans how safe, easy and healthy it is to bike to work and school, Bike to Work and School Day gives us a chance to talk about the great strides the city and its partners have made over the years — with Bike Walk Alameda’s encouragement — toward making the Island bicycle-friendly. The list of bike-friendly improvements includes cycle tracks on Fernside Boulevard and Shore Line Drive, better bike access in new developments and a proliferation of new bike racks, lockers and fix-it stations, along with improved crosswalks around the Island. This year we’ll be offering treats and tote bags at five energizer stations from 6:30 to 9 a.m. next Thursday along with some good conversation. We also invite you to join us at our after-work party, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Speisekammer, 2424 Lincoln Ave. We’d like to thank our sponsors for supporting Bike to Work Day, including the City of Alameda and after-party sponsor Tim Lewis Communities and of course, Bike East Bay for organizing the regional cycling community. We look forward to having you join Bike Walk Alameda on May 12 for our Bike to Work and School Day festivities, and hope you have a safe and enjoyable commute! Sincerely, Lucy Gigli, Co-Founder and President, Bike Walk Alameda In addition to providing a fun opportunity to commute to work and school by bike with hundreds of fellow cyclists, Bike to Work and School Day offers the chance to reflect on the progress the City and its partners have made toward making Alameda a safe and comfortable place to bike and walk. In 2015, the City opened the much-anticipated Shore Line Drive cycle track. It also did some important planning work on a future Cross Alameda Trail. As well as approved a conceptual plan for better, safer access to Central Avenue for people who bike and walk. The City and its partners have also improved conditions for people who commute by bike. Just a few months ago, San Francisco Bay Ferry installed 20 electronic bike lockers at the Main Street ferry terminal. Meanwhile, the City, erected a new Dero Fix-It Station in front of the Main Library and has been improving crosswalks Island-wide to make it safer for people who walk and bike to cross the street. These recent improvements build on years of progress that forward-thinking City leaders have made toward making Alameda a safer and more comfortable place to walk and bike — including plans for future developments whose streets will be accessible to everyone. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank the City of Alameda and its public and private partners for your work toward making the Island a safe place to walk and bike. We look forward to reporting even more good news about the City’s progress next year. City of Alameda Highlights
