Miramichi Community Wellness and Recreation is committed to enhancing the quality of life for Miramichi residents and plays a significant role in shaping the character of the City through the various facilities, parks, special events and programs it offers.
Community Involvement: The City of Miramichi recognizes the importance of having the community involved in shaping the future of Miramichi. An example of this is the commitment made by council to join the Age-Friendly Community initiative. We recognize that our aging population plays an important role in our community, and by working with them, we can create an action plan that will allow us to better serve this population and create a community that can be enjoyed by all.
The City of Miramichi will also be launching its Neighbourhood Matching Grant this fall. This grant is intended to support community groups, organizations, and neighbourhood associations by providing resources to support projects that make our neighbourhoods and community stronger and more connected.
The City of Miramichi has also seen the addition of the Ellis St Community Garden. This community-lead project has multiple plots available for community members, and contains a communal plot, where the community can access fresh vegetables.
Facilities: Miramichi Community Wellness and Recreation aims to ensure that all facilities are safe and enjoyable for all users. By creating a sense of place, parks, trails, and recreation facilities in
Miramichi provide critical connections for residents through the natural environment, recreational pursuits, historic appreciation, and social and cultural events. This sense of place shapes the cohesive fabric of vision, values and identity of the community while promoting an active lifestyle for all ages.
The City of Miramichi continues to make significant investments in our parks, trails, and facilities.
This fall the department will be making upgrades to French Fort Cove, which include a new nature themed playground, a bike skills park, expansion of trails, and extension of the parking lot.
The ever-popular Ritchie’s Wharf will also be receiving a facelift, which will include
3
replacement of the boardwalk, lighting upgrades, and electrical upgrades. This spring there was also an extension of the docking system, which provided more residents the opportunity to get out and enjoy our beautiful river.
With the investments
made in our parks and
facilities, Miramichi has
become a destination that
welcomes and captivates
residents and visitors.
Wellness Initiatives: The
Miramichi Community
Wellness and Recreation
Department also plays an
active role in promoting
and delivering wellness
initiatives throughout the
City. Through collaboration
and partnerships with
other agencies and
stakeholders, the
department is better able
to promote and provide
opportunities for all
residents to live a
healthy active lifestyle.
The Department works
closely with multiple
stakeholders such as Be
Alive Northumberland,
Public Health, and the
MANGO program.
Examples of initiatives are
the Department’s
implementation of
healthy eating options in
our Recreation facilities,
implementing healthy
eating in programming and
special events, sponsored
Yoga sessions in our
parks, promotion of the
5210 programs, Use It or
Lose It, and a partnership
with MANGO in offering
Beginner Walking
programs (page 7)
Programming: As you will
see from the multiple
programs and activities in
this brochure, Miramichi
Community Wellness
and Recreation staff and
the many volunteers,
and volunteer
associations work
extremely hard in
providing positive
recreational
opportunities for all
residents. We are always
looking for new programs
and initiatives that meet
the needs of our changing
population. If you have
ideas, suggestions or
comments, the
Department would like to
hear from you. You can
contact our Department in
person at our office at 94
General Manson Way, by
phone at 623-2300 or by
emailing us at
miramichirecreation@mira
michi.org.
Miramichi Community
Wellness and recreation
would like to thank you
for exploring the many
recreational
opportunities available
in our community, and
hope you are able to find
the programs, services,
and facilities that allow
you to live a healthy and
active lifestyle.

benefits are
endless!

The Lifesaving Society of NB has published the latest “New Brunswick Public Pool Safety
Standards Guide” after extensive research on water safety, drowning prevention and drowning
stats in our Province. To ensure our Community Wellness & Recreation public pools are safer
for our patrons to use, we have adapted these new recommendations to our pools.
Here are the changes:
✓ Please shower with soap and warm water before entering the pool
✓ Children 6 and under must be accompanied by a parent or adult 16 years of age or older
who is responsible for their direct supervision.
✓ Children 7-10 years old who are unable to complete the lap test must be accompanied
by a person 12 year of age or older who is responsible for their direct supervision.
✓ Repetitive breath holding, prolonged underwater swimming is not permitted by general
pool users.
✓ Snorkels and face masks are not permitted by general pool users.
Private Lessons:
Due to the high volume of private lesson request, we have implemented a system to better
serve our community and ensure everyone has equal opportunity to learn to swim. We take
those with special circumstances first that do better with one on one instruction who are unable
to attend group settings. After this, we take those who need extra help outside of their regular
scheduled instructional swim lessons if needed. Once we have accommodated the above lists,
we will offer lessons to those wishing to obtain levels through one on one instruction. Most
private lessons are done during public swim time.
Cost: $10 for 30 minutes (children under 6) $20/1 hour (children 6 years of age and over)
To book private lessons, email [email protected] or call 623-2054.

out wearing a lifejacket. They’ll submerge and exhale underwater. Wearing lifejacket
they’ll glide on their front and back.
Preschool 3 These youngsters will try both jumping and a sideways entry into deep water while
wearing a lifejacket. They’ll recover objects from the bottom in waist-deep water.
