A warm welcome to our 4th issue of CityPages. Its popularity is growing with each issue and
I hope that you find it interesting and informative. CityPages Magazine began as a dream in
January, and since then each monthly issue has emerged as a new dimension in community
media through publishing uplifting articles, stories, photos and information that make people
‘feel good’, and the word around town is... everybody LOVES CityPages!
Things are heating up and our April issue is no exception! With a new season comes new
collections and we reveal the latest trends for Spring/Summer 2010 for you.
Last month we participated in the Earth Hour movement and were proud to be the Media
sponsors for the event.
This is Earth Month, I often think that Earth Day comes and goes, but do you really need a
special day to do something good for our planet? Maybe you did more than your fair share in
honour of yesterday’s occasion, or maybe you wish you had done something more. But have
you ever thought, how can you help by doing something good for our earth?
We also covered in this issue Autism: The word no parent wants to hear.
One of the best things about editing a magazine is that you learn about all kinds of people,
places, and things you otherwise would not. Take Mr. Nadeem Shafi, Mr. Andreas and Eng.
Mijbel Almutawa for example, I would have never imagined meeting them otherwise. This
month we meet these great men and share their thoughts and inspiring messages with all
of you.

Last week I was at the 360 Degrees Mall with my family. After the movie we were hungry and filled with the anticipation of trying a new restaurant in the mall. I saw a huge banner on the wall saying “Lets Burger – Like Never Before, Level 3” We immediately thought of trying that. We took the escalators to the 3rd level and immediately noticed the restaurant on our left. A friendly waitress welcomed us and asked for our seating preferences and guided us to our table. As we walked, we were not sure if we were at a Burger joint because the place was so big and spacious as compared to all other burger restaurants in Kuwait.
Soon we had the menu given to us. Whilst the main dishes are hamburgers, but the variety of options really made it difficult for us to make our selection.
The menu had over 17 options for starters, 9 kinds of salads, around 10 options for sandwiches, and over 24 different kinds of burgers and not to mention they also have dishes for non-burger lovers.
Lets Burger is an outstanding 70’s modern themed restaurant. Their uniquely crafted burgers will fill your every desire that you crave for in a burger. Not even considering the fact that everything except for the American fries is homemade and cooked to perfection. I guarantee that you will leave satisfied, especially if you like a good home cooked meal, and you don’t feel like cooking yourself, Lets Burger is the place to be.
How’s the service at Lets Burger? The waitress’s and waiter’s check up on you often to see if you have everything you need. Your food comes out fresh and quickly and is bound to leave you pleased. Right now I believe I have you craving for their food just as badly as I am, at least I hope I do.
Food that I have tried myself and that I recommend you try. I began with the bits of everything which is something I suggest to start with and we ordered the Classic Buffalo Wings which are my favourite. The wings were the best I had in town. The sauce was perfect and made my day. Now for the main course we finally decided and ordered the Stuffed Cheese Burger which proves that they cook all their food homemade, a mouth watering Beef Patty with the cheese put in between the meat, to top it all off iceberg lettuce, pickles, and a tomato.
We also had the Philly Burger, to which it seems they use their own homemade barbecue sauce, with tender meat and this burger is bound to hit the spot. My wife opted for the “Have It Your Way" which allows you to choose your desired burger then you can go to the topping bar and choose what toppings you want in your burger to make it the way you want it. There is also an array of over a dozen sauces that you can help yourself to.
So I see you’re done with your appetizer and your main meal. Feeling full? I hope not, there’s still dessert left. Are you ready for this? All of you American’s know apple crumble pie is a well loved homemade dish with a scoop of ice cream to top it off that just melt’s you inside. Well guess what, they have it and it’s exactly what you dream of your mother or grandmother cooking for you.
Well then, I guess I’m done here; now all that’s left to say is get into your cars and take off to Lets Burger you won’t be disappointed. Wow, writing this made me hungry, go go! What are you waiting for? Even if you have to wait to eat they have a lovely cozy waiting area, and it’s all well worth it.

I am sure you must have seen the advertisement on the roads where young boys and girls are standing and looking up with some Arabic text that goes with it. At least you must have not missed the P2BK written on it as it was the only English text on the advertisement. This was the campaign of P2BK to mark their 2nd annual event.
P2BK stands for Proud To Be Kuwaiti. A non-profit national organization that has been established by a group of independent Kuwaiti youth for the love, devotion, and patriotism to their beloved country. The Proud To Be Kuwaiti team strives to enhance and develop the youth’s achievements and abilities in all fields and activities, while embracing and catering to the small and medium enterprises through continuous support and guidance from their infancy stage to infinity.
Their aim is to support and highlight Kuwaiti youth’s energies in various fields and levels by organizing activities, events, and national contributions, while exposing and overcoming the obstacles facing them during their inception and beginning.
Their mission is to promote the spirit of national belongingness and adherence to the values of their customs, society, and national spirit, as well as supporting youth projects through training and ongoing guidance with the support of the media exposure of their project.

The event was organised at the Kuwait International Fairground (Hall 8), Mishref, between 17th and 19th of March this year under the patronage of H.H Sheikh Nasser Mohammed Al Ahmad Al Sabah, Prime Minister of Kuwait.
CityPages (CP) team was looking forward to attend this event and share it with all its readers. The CP team planned to visit the event on the last day which was Friday. The parking lots were already full as we reached around 5:00pm and after a few rounds we managed to get a parking place.
As we entered the main gate, we could feel that the event was very well organised as we are not used to good exhibitions in Kuwait. Everything seemed well organised. It surely was the result of strong leadership and teamwork. I could see that 99% of the visitors were Kuwaitis and they were there to support the youth.
I personally found this event to be the biggest and most organised exhibition in Kuwait. The lighting was so well done. It was dim lighting in contrast to heavy lighting which we usually see in all exhibitions. The most amazing thing was a huge stage put up at the center of the exhibition hall where a huge orchestra was performing live. There was plenty of seating so people could really be engaged and get entertained.
Our team decided to start from the booths on the left and try to visit and congratulate every participant. Each booth was so well designed with a perfect theme and was a piece of art. I could not remember seeing any booth that was just plain or done in a hurry. It seemed that each participant really took great interest to the finest details and brought out their best
to display. We could see the pride on the face of each young entrepreneur presenting the company and with full confidence explaining the mission to the visitors and providing additional information.
CP team met with several young entrepreneurs and appreciated their initiatives. Another good thing about the P2BK event was its sponsors which were established companies, including banks, airlines, telecoms, etc. The event provided the perfect opportunity to recognise and support young business talent in Kuwait. It introduced a dynamic group of budding young Kuwaiti entrepreneurs, the business leaders of tomorrow to seasoned business experts, such as those from Zain, Gulf Bank, Wataniya Airways, Ford, and several others in order to encourage and assist the growth of their businesses.
A lot of great participants were on display. Some of them we visited were: AymStrong, Evolution designs, My Spa, NJ, ART Deco, Zia Candles, Ride On, Breesam, Optimus Design, Rashe Boutique, Mark Low, Memoire Studio, Oishii Sushi, Design and Photo.
Other participants at the exhibitions were: Red and Blue Agency, Mr. Delivery, Sambosa Box, Corn Dogs, The Cookie Bag, Zaatar Express, Tarkeeb, Velvet Cup, Bevanda, Buongiorno, Bubbles Diving Center, Jersey Box, Kakaw, My Click, Twisty Crispy, Cookie Pop, J&A, Gavottees Chocolate, Sparkle Events, Autozan, CF Boutique, Angel Bags & Accessories, Decorado, and Capital District Clothing.
It was getting more and more fun and we could not realise that we had already spent a few hours at the exhibition. The reason was that each booth was so engaging that we were forced to spend several minutes at each booth. Soon we realised that it would be impossible for us to spend more time at each booth and decided to walk through and have a quick glimpse at the exhibitors.
Our team then decided to leave the exhibition as it was getting more filled with visitors. As we were on our way out, we realized that the gates were closed as there was a huge crowd outside and it was difficult to accommodate them inside the exhibition hall. It clearly showed that the people of Kuwait support their youth and their enterprises and P2BK is indeed a very successful initiative for the future of Kuwait.

Living in one of the GCC countries is a stressful drama. However, I personally feel
that one could ride out of this lull by positive actions. The 7 tips mentioned below have been very useful in creating happy endings to my life on a daily basis.
Pamper with a massage; Massage is a great way to de stress a distressed body. It is the best mode to relax the mind and allows the body to have some much needed rest. Moreover, massage increases the amount of blood flow in the body & feel good hormones endorphins which is a big energy booster, akin to doing exercise. A word of caution, please try to visit a certified and experienced massage therapist.
Breathe control While at work, being bombarded with various chores is the norm and this can easily make one go hyper. In such situations try to breathe in deeply and exhale slowly. Unfortunately due to our supersonic life style, we have programmed our body to use the rib cage; to force the chest to breathe in and out where as that ideal function belongs to the diaphragm. Diaphragmatic deep breathing greatly calms and reduces anxiety symptoms.
Calming effects of the sea GCC countries are blessed with an excellent coast line. Chill out by sitting on the sea side. The vast expanse of sea is very soothing; moreover the salty air from sea is anti inflammatory and treats a host of diseases from asthma to bronchitis to eczema. A dip would be even better.
Quit smoking Lack of constructive activities in this part of the world has created a sea of
smokers. Nicotine d e p e n d e n c y eventually creates stress & anxiety along with a host of preventable diseases.
Cut down on refined sugar & white breads The public here loves junk food which is basically well processed and refined foods. They are devoid of nutrients and are unhealthy compared to whole or brown foods. Glucose from these foods directly gets in to the blood stream giving a quick high and a quick low; creating lack of energy, stress and negative emotions.
Learn Arabic An expatriate at one stage or the other has to deal with government & public sector while living in any of these countries; and unfortunately very few officials in these areas can speak English. For someone in need, this is frustrating and stressful. The best option, learn Arabic. Learning a new language is the best form of exercise one can give to the brain.
My final word is 'life is what you make it'. Place your attention on being in perfect health, having a good relationship with people around you and being grateful for every day on this planet and you will see yourself successful and stress free.
As Freddie Mercury said "who wants to live forever?" So while living; be well & stress less.

Weekend, even the mention of this word makes me feel relaxed. Something that I
really look forward to, the very moment Sunday morning starts. Where I live, our weekend is Friday and Saturday. We all are so caught up in our daily race to earn our daily bread that our time is actually controlled. It is controlled to the extent that when we wake up, when we eat, when we come back home is all governed by this monotonous routine.
For me weekend is strictly ‘My Time’. No other factor can influence this, two beautiful days in the week except me. It’s the time when I can wake up without an alarm bell ringing in my ears. It’s the time when I can have my breakfast with my legs resting on the center table and soothing music to unwind everything that went about in the week gone by. I enjoy cooking, as I consider cooking as a great stress reliever and it really brings out the creative person in me. In the fast paced 5 working days, the mood
is just not right for unleashing the creative culinary antics. On Friday morning, right from the breakfast to lunch it’s experimenting on various methods to enjoy a bon appetite.
Cleaning the house and rearranging the house is another way for me to unwind on the weekend. I have never been a late riser as I believe the best part of the day is the morning. It feels great to see the sun gleaming into your living room; sad part is, it probably does that every single day. We are never there to experience it except for the weekend. Just open up the curtains and let that light shine into your rooms and into your life’s. It’s a great relaxing feeling.
Afternoons have been lazy for me and that is when I try catching up on a power nap. That really energizes me for the rest of the day. Start with an afternoon tea with light snacks with my wife and catch up on each others

highlights of the week. Communication is the key to a relationship and these days its difficult to get that going much and weekend for me is really a great time to strengthen this bond.
Eating out is always been a pleasure and with the variety of restaurants in Kuwait, it’s always something we look forward to. Never try the same restaurant again is our motto. My passion for food is well addressed on Friday night and thankfully it’s never been disappointing. That for me is the perfect time to meet friends and enjoy a great meal.
Saturdays are always laid back and getting ready for the week ahead. Then the whole cycle is repeated all over and on Sunday morning its again a long wait for the Thursday evening. This is the driving factor in taking me over the week one day at a time.

An ACCA is more relevant now than ever beforetariq Maruf

In Kuwait, one observation from our work with some of the biggest and most well known businesses is the huge demand for qualified finance professionals. The recent turmoil in the global financial markets has only served to increase this demand still further.
In July last year, and again in February this year, we held open events at our training facility on different qualifications and how critical it is to hold a recognised professional qualification to grow as a successful business professional. Building on that, I will be writing a series of articles giving an insight into the vastness and areas of a specific qualification – the ACCA, offered by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants.
The ACCA is one of the most relevant qualifications for a professional to have in the current changing financial environment. You may ask, ‘how is it relevant?’ The ACCA qualification is the only international qualification which is based on the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). ‘How does that make any difference?’ Please read on.
“The past 18 months have shown just how globally connected the economies of the world have become. Convergence is a critical step in countries moving to a single set of financial reporting standards. However, that alone will not achieve the goal of one global financial reporting language. All countries must ultimately commit to adopt IFRS.” James S. More and more countries are adopting IFRS as a ‘best practice’ even where it is not legally binding for them to do so, proving the importance of this standard and its trend globally. In the Middle East, there is great emphasis on IFRS and it is the principal accepted accounting framework in the region. Since 2005, all listed companies in the E.U. were required to comply with IFRS. Companies in Canada will be adopting IFRS starting 2011. The United States and India are already working on adopting IFRS and expecting to be effective from 2015.
The ACCA has been around for over 100 years, which means the growth of the association is backed by a solid history. Founded in 1904, its reputation for excellence in qualifications and
training is acknowledged around the world, which will have a positive impact on a professional’s reputation.
The ACCA is the “gold standard”, global route to “chartered accountant” status. Employers the world over understand and respect the qualification. However, the bar is high: passing requires proper preparation. It is designed to deliver a broad-based qualification, focusing on the essential skills of accounting, business and finance - without introducing unnecessary barriers to membership. It offers a choice of examinations and work experience competences to allow students and their sponsors to tailor the path of the qualification to suit their needs and aspirations.
As a Chartered Certified Accountant, you will not have any restriction on which career path to follow. If you have the fear of being locked away in a finance department, fear not. The examinations cover all aspects of business management from the purely technical - such as bookkeeping and cost accounting - to the more theoretical aspects such as motivational theory and theories of risk. The ACCA qualification delivers professional accountants who are capable of building successful careers across all sectors, from practising in accounting firms, to the corporate, financial services and public sectors.
There is a strong focus on professional values, ethics, and governance. These skills are essential as the profession moves towards strengthened codes of conduct, regulation, and legislation – with an increasing focus on professionalism and ethics in accounting. These are examined at the highest level in the ACCA Qualification and are a core element of the practical experience requirements.
Gaining such a qualification is evidence that the holder possesses skills and knowledge which are in high demand by employers in industry, banking, auditing, consulting as well as other professions like taxation and law. Candidates not only gain specialist knowledge in finance and accounting, but also acquire valuable skills in organisational management and strategy.
As you may be aware, Ernst & Young Training has been offering training services not only to businesses in Kuwait, but also to other members of the community. Writing about my recent trip to India has proven difficult. I only went to three
major places, New Delhi, Dehradun, and the mountain resort Mussoorie. India is so vast and incorporates so many differences that my short experience is not enough to be a fair judge, however my first impressions were “ I love it here!!”
The country is a vast array of clashing colour and diversity. Several religions intermingle as if their basic beliefs do not contradict each other. The religions here have impacted culture so deeply that it would be impossible to function harmoniously without some degree of tolerance for other people’s religious habits.
People here are predominately Indian, of course, but the diversity in appearance, class and wealth creates another kaleidoscope for the newcomer to attempt to absorb.
Derelict buildings are cheek by jowl with elegant edifices of the New Millennium, of which, India claims it will be the new leader. On the roads the clashes continue with cars, scooters, buses, rickshaws and horse drawn carts all compete for each others space. I got the feeling that I was in a live exhibition of transport history rather than making my way down a city thoroughfare. There are probably more two wheeled modes of motion
than any other means and their small size and manoeuvrability definitely give the advantage.
The area around New Delhi is flat and covered with many tiny farms of corn, sugar cane and rice. On the train moving north the farm land changes into the forest laden foothills of the Himalaya Mountains. There is a density in the forest which is also evident in all other aspects of India that as a Westerner is strange to me. Crowded places, roads, and housing squeeze the body and mind into a corner. After being in the desert of Kuwait the ever present greenery is refreshing. Many fruits and vegetables grow easily in this soil and climate which makes

life (barely) sustainable for many very poor people, however pollution and ‘big business are both crowding out the land’s capacity to provide for its inhabitants.
The poverty of some is heart wrenching. Seeing people live, cook, and sleep on the side of the road or on the platform of the railway station causes me to take a reality check about my own wealth. People here are friendly but in crowded places do not seem to see each other as people but rather as obstacles to be negotiated in order to get to the next place.
The British Colonial influence is still evident. It is slightly humorous to hear the Indians use ‘proper’ English terms and grammar – proper for the colonial era, that is.
Indian food is delicious; eating with your hands is the only way to ‘take the proper taste’ but

can be quite messy for a rookie. Using a fork to load your hand feels akin to the impracticality of carrying your bicycle. Speaking of bicycles, there were many and how do you manage to get four people on one without flattening the tires! Many scooters also appeared to be the ‘family
v e h i c l e . ’ And how do the c a t t l e seem to know that they own the road and that you must yield?
The road up to Mussoorie was nerve-racking with a rock wall on one
side all covered in monkey infested vines and a derelict guardrail holding back the foggy abyss on the other side. The roads were narrow and crowded with overloaded buses hogging all the space. The Himalaya Mountains are similar to the Andes in that they are steep and jagged but overgrown with vegetation. Mussoorie was a delightful reward for braving the roadway and we found many shoes, shoals and sunglasses for sale. Oh… and the view was astounding!
Like many other resource rich countries in the world India’s social and political structures enhance the wealth of a few and deepens the abject poverty of the poor. There probably is enough wealth here for everyone but it is just not available to the disenfranchised, and outcast.
India’s monetary and intellectual wealth, cultural and religious diversity and immense landscape have not yet been woven together into a fabric which adequately provides for herself. Her servitude to others for many years has perhaps hindered her progress. I do not think we have yet seen what India can do in the world. Maybe the diversity is preventing the unity or community ethos needed to care for her children. I hope that the ‘Brave New India’ which is growing economically will also grow
inwards towards caring for the less fortunate.

there are 7 Basic Principles in table setting
1. Table appointments include materials for setting the table such as the tablecloth, place mats, napkins, china or dinnerware’s, flat wares and glass wares. Table appointments that are placed on the table for each person make up an individual “cover”. At least 20 inches should be allowed for each cover.
2. Tablecloth which should be placed evenly over a silence pad may consist of linen, cotton, nylon, plastic, and native materials such as rattan, bamboo, cork and sinamay. It is a must for every occasion and should hang 4 to 6 inches on all sides of the table for informal occasions and 8 to 10 inches long for formal occasions. If a place mat is used, it should be about 16 to 18 inches long and 12 to 14 inches wide. When used, the long edge should be aligned with the table.
3. For formal occasions, napkins 24 x 24 square inches are recommended. For informal meals
such as breakfast, lunch or dinner 17 x 17 square inches may be used. Informal occasions require smaller napkins 12 x 12 inches long. It should be folded and placed with the open edge nearest the left side of the fork 1 inch from the side of the table. For formal occasions, napkins may be placed on the service plate or on the goblet depending upon one’s taste.
4. Table wares refer to the utensils used for eating and serving, including flatware’s, dinner wares, and glass wares. Flat wares are usually made of sterling silver steel or silver plated steel or plastic. Spoons, forks, knives, teaspoons and serving pieces are flat wares. Place the knife for and spoon 1 inch from the edge of the table.

It's never easy to talk about religion, but, in a multicultural world, it's probably OK to spend
a moment or two with the most important festival in the Christian calendar. I mean, of course, Easter.
Every child who has ever attended Sunday School knows the Easter story. Jesus, crucified by the Romans on Good Friday rose from the dead on Easter Sunday for the salvation of mankind.
Rumour has it that we can thank the Venerable Bede, an eighth century monk whose writings include references to the Anglo-Saxon Eosturmonath, the month of the goddess Eostre for naming Easter.
A frequently repeated - but wholly unsourced - story relates how Eostre found a wounded, freezing bird and transformed it into a hare to ‘save’ it. The hare continued to be able to lay eggs and did so each spring in gratitude to the goddess. A neat, if improbable conjoint, I think. Children eye up large chocolate eggs in extravagantly beribboned packaging in the shops, traditionally given to them on Easter Sunday, often by relatives who are not responsible for their dental health. The Easter Bunny, legend has it, brings baskets filled with coloured eggs to the homes of children on the night before Easter. The Easter Bunny will either put the baskets in a designated place or hide them somewhere in the house or garden for the children to find when they wake up in the morning. There are many variants. The annual Easter Egg Roll on the White House lawn

Germany, a prize is awarded to the contestant whose egg rolls fastest down a track. In Egypt, children bowl red and yellow eggs towards another row of eggs and whoever cracks one egg can claim them all. Perhaps Kuwait could develop its own variant – egg-bowling down the Corniche from the Scientific Centre to Marina Mall.
There was a tradition when I was a child that eggs - or eggshells - were painted in bright colours on Easter morning. The precise origin of the ancient custom of colouring eggs is not known, although evidently the blooming of many flowers in spring coincides with the use of the fertility symbol of eggs and eggs boiled with some flowers change colour, bringing spring into the home. Many Christians of the Eastern Orthodox Church to this day typically dye their Easter eggs red, the colour of blood, in recognition of the blood of the sacrificed Christ and of re-emergent life in springtime. Some also use green instead, reminiscent of the green leaves emerging after a long, dead winter.
German Protestants wanted to retain the Catholic custom of eating coloured eggs for Easter, but did not want to introduce their children to the Catholic rite of fasting. Eggs were forbidden to Catholics during the fast of Lent, which was the reason for the abundance of eggs at Easter time.
In still older legend, Eostre (or 'Eostra') was 'the divinity of the radiant dawn, of upspringing light, a spectacle that brings joy and blessing', whose meaning was perhaps adapted for the resurrection-day of the Christian God, the ancients being notorious for hedging their bets since allegiance to one deity invariably ticked off the others - rather like supporting two football teams at the same time. Bonfires were lit at Easter and, according to popular belief,

morning, she (or perhaps, he) gives three joyful leaps, and dances for joy. Water drawn on Easter morning is, like that at Christmas, holy and healing. Maidens clothed in white, who at Easter, at the season of returning spring, show themselves in clefts of the rock and on mountains, are suggestive of the ancient goddess.
The Christian Church - in need of seasonal ritual - linked it to the Jewish Passover by much of its symbolism, as well as by its position in the calendar. In most European languages, the feast called Easter in English is termed by the words for passover in those languages and in the older English versions of the Bible the term Easter was the term used to translate passover. The First Council of Nicaea (325) established the date of Easter as the first Sunday after the full moon (the Paschal Full Moon) following the vernal equinox, putting its date anywhere between March 22 and April 25. This year, it falls on April 4th.
Finally, the Paschal Greeting is used worldwide in various Christian denominations. On Easter Day, instead of saying 'hello' or some such, the faithful greet each other with "Christ is Risen!" the response being "He is risen indeed!"
So, here is the Paschal Greeting.. .in Arabic al-Masih qam! Haqqan qam! in Filipino Si Cristo ay nabuhay! Siya nga ay nabuhay! in Korean Geuriseudokkeseo Buhwalhasheotne! and finally, just in case anybody had their doubts... my own favourite, Klingon Hu'ta' QISt! Hu'bejta'! Happy Easter, everyone.

– those who do excess shopping. They are indeed treated well by the experts and guided by selling their own clothes and accessories or by donating those things to the charity. Those are the planned strategies laid by expert psychiatrists to help them out.
In every religion and culture across the world irrespective of time and age, they have taught humanity how to spend their valuable money.
Islam is one great universal religion which teaches us how to spend our money wisely. Islam commands us to give charity (zakat and sadaqa) regularly. Islam never asked Muslims to spend excess money on anything.
Holy prophet Mohammed (Peace Be Upon Him), his family, companions and the other great men of Islam have set a perfect example for us. Indeed their life was much simpler and down to earth. They could have indulged in luxury and comfort, but they forgo every thing and put their life first to Islam and to the Ummah.
There is one such inspiring great incident in the lifetime of Syeda Fatima (Radi Allahu Anha) and her whole family (including her servant). Once they gave up all their food to the beggars and the prisoners who came at their house asking for food. Indeed the whole family was so benevolent that they gave up their food one by one to the needy people. Even the righteous servant said ‘if you are giving your food to the poor, then how can I eat?’ she too gave her food away to the needy. The whole family wasempty stomach for three days and they first fed the poor.
This example is quoted because if not the great like them, atleast we can do our little bit to our society and country. Indeed Syeda Fatima (Radi Allahu Anha) was the daughter of Holy Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him), a perfect example in every context of life. She set forth her life to the people and led a very simple and noble life.
Today in modern era of science and technology, we see all sorts of people on television and print media. We madly watch them and want to be just like them. We simply forget our roots of thinking and teaching. We forget the principles and thoughts taught by our parents and teachers. We see celebrities always admitting being shopaholic and excess of money they spent on their glamour. Indeed they earn a million dollar money and over. They don’t have to think and neither have a conscience to think. They are a paradox to society.
But, indeed we have our lovely intellect to choose between what is right and what is wrong. Even the financial experts have concerns over the global recession and have their own opinions on excess of money spent every where.
I feel really its time now to think about our financial expenditure and shopaholic adventure across our world!!.

A shopping mall full of buzzing, enthusiastic, fastidious buyers, majority among them is
‘shopaholics’, who are agile, never turn downanything which comes in their way for passion of shopping. That’s not about one shopaholic who never turns down anything, but people across the world who are bitten by this buzz of shopping. Anything which comes in our necessity of requirement must be acquired, but every month if it comes in excess must be abandoned.
In so many markets, malls, shopping centers, boutiques, etc. , do we actually ask our conscience and say “Do I Really Need This?”
Definitely life teaches us to be self conscious and prepared for the future. For that, we must intelligently do our own need analysis. Shopping or purchasing is our necessity. We have to take care of our needs, but anything which comes in bulk and excess (anything which we already have) has to be avoided for our good.
That may be one of the reasons why in the west, they have rehab centers for shopaholics

وهو ينتج عن اضطراب في اجلهاز العصبي مما يؤثر على وظائف املخ، ويالحظ أن الطفل املصاب بالتوحد فقط يكون طبيعيا التوحد معاقا و ال يعتبر الشخص املصاب مبرض الوالدة عند جسديآ فهم ال يحتاجون إلى كرسى متحرك و " تبدو" هيئتهم الالمرئية الطبيعة و نظرآ لهذه كهيئة أى شخص طبيعي. يصبح أمر رفع الوعى العام و فهم هذه احلالة أكثر صعوبة.
في صعوبات بالتوحد املصابون واألشخاص األطفال فيواجه وكذلك االجتماعي والتفاعل اللفظي، غير التواصل مجال
صعوبات في األنشطة الترفيهية.
مسببات مرض التوحد
إلى التوحد حول أجريت التي العلمية األبحاث تتوصل لم نتيجة قطعية حول السبب املباشر للتوحد، إن مسبباته ما زالت غير معروفة و لكن تظهر البحوث إلى وجود عامل جيني ذي تأثير مباشر في اإلصابة بهذا االضطراب. كما تؤكد البحوث على أن التوحد ميكن ربطه مبجموعة من احلاالت التى تؤثر على منو الدماغ و التى حتدث قبل أو أثناء أو مباشرة بعد الوالدة مثل إصابة األم باحلصبة األملانية واحلاالت التى لم تعالج من مرض الفينيل كيتونوريا و نقص األكسجني " الوالدة املتعسرة " مما
يؤثر على اجلسم والدماغ وتظهر عوارض التوحد.

واألساسية األولى اخلطوة ألنه التوحد مهم جدا تشخيص وتصميم املناسب التربوي للمكان التوحدي الطفل لتحويل البرنامج التعليمي اخلاص به إذا مت التشخيص فى أقرب وقت و املساعدة على احلصول فى أفضل الشخص فرصة تكون الدعم املناسبني. و ال توجد اختبارات طبية لتشخيص حاالت املالحظة على الوحيد الدقيق التشخيص ويعتمد التوحد, باآلخرين ومعدالت منوه. ومن الفرد وعالقاته املباشرة لسلوك يخضع أن ينبغي فإنه دقيق تشخيص إلى التوصل أجل الطفل ملتابعة مختصني ماهرين في حتديد مستويات التواصل املرتبطة السلوكيات من الكثير أن وحيث والنمو، والسلوك بالتوحد هي أيضا أعراض الضطرابات أخرى فإنه ميكن للطبيب مسببات الستبعاد مختلفة طبية الختبارات احلالة إخضاع دقة أكثر تشخيص إلى التوصل أجل ومن أخرى، محتملة ينبغي أن يتم تقييم الطفل من قبل فريق متعدد التخصصات أطفال، وطبيب نفسيا، وأحيانا األعصاب، في يضم مختصا وأخصائي في عالج النطق، وأخصائي تربية خاصة وغيرهم من

Life has become so busy and stress full that everyone gets headache every now and then
headaches can be pounding, throbbing, splitting or just dull aches. However, it is very important to understand how to recognize whether it is just an ordinary passing pain or something serious that requires medical attention.
Types of headachesWhen the International Headache Society published its classification of headache disorders it was 96 pages long, with 15 pages on MIGRAINE alone!!. I will not give you another type of headache by telling you all about that so we will discuss only few most common types of headaches.
Before going into details about different types of headaches let me explain you triggers of headaches.
TRIGGERS OF HEADACHESYou may say, “I know what causes my headaches. Staying up late or drinking too much coffee will bring on a headache every time.” But a trigger is not the same as a cause.These factors can trigger a headache but causes are actually certain biochemical changes that take place in the nervous system. So the triggers are:
Cigarette smoke Alcohol Excessive caffeine Bright sunlight Disturbed sleeping patterns Skipping meals Becoming dehydrated Being under a lot of stress Having a minor head injury Using computer or watching TV for a long time Taking long trips in a car or bus Listening to really loud music Consuming certain foods such as aged cheese ,
nuts, pizza, chocolate, ice cream, fatty or fried
food, yoghurt, or anything with a food additive MSG
Certain infections such as ear infection, viral like flu or cold, strep throat or sinus infections
Vision problems
WHAt DIFFeRent tYPes oF HeADACHes FeeL LIKe AnD tReAtMent tIPs
TENSION HEADACHEMild to moderate pain or pressure around your forehead or the back of your head and neck lasts from 30 minutes to a few days
tReAtMent tIPs --------------------------------Take over the counter pain reliever like Brufen, Aspirin, or Paracetamol as soon as you begin to feel pain . A light scalp massage may also help. Most importantly find the cause for tension and try to solve it!!
SINUS HEADACHEPain in the bridge of your nose, forehead, or under your eyes that is worse in the morning and intensifies when you move your head.
tReAtMent tIPs --------------------------------A decongestant can relieve the sinus pressure that causes these headaches. Inhaling steam and drinking hot drinks like green tea can also help. If pain persists for more than a day, see your doctor to rule out an infection.
MIGRAINEThrobbing on the sides of your head that’s made worse by moving around, plus nausea or vomiting, sensitivity to light, noise or smells, stomachaches, seeing spots, flashing lights or halos and dizziness.
tReAtMent tIPs --------------------------------Take Aspirin, Brufen or Paracetamol but your doctor may prescribe a stronger medication. Since migraines can be triggered by chemicals in food, try keeping a food journal as well.
MENSTRUAL MIGRAINESymptoms are the same as those for migraine, but these headaches occur a couple of days before your periods or during it.
tReAtMent tIPs --------------------------------Consult your doctor about medications, which you would take only during your menstrual cycle. Or if you are on the pill, reduce your number of periods by skipping the placebo pills.

Insert a pair of Odour-Eaters Insoles into your shoes, which will absorb wetness and odour.
Quick Grooming Tips • If you don't iron your clothes, remove them immediately from the dryer so wrinkles don't set. • In hot weather, wear light-colored, cotton clothing and socks. This will absorb less heat and "sweat stains" will be less visible. • Consider trimming your arm pit hairs in warm weather. Less hairs, less bacteria, less smell. Extend the Life of Your Razor Blades All you need is a bottle of mineral oil and some dettol. After shaving, thoroughly clean and dry your razor blades and then completely immerse the razor head in a shallow dish filled with mineral oil. Use dettol to wash away the oil next time you need to use the razor. By immersing the blades in oil, you stop the oxidization process that dulls their sharp edges. أنشطة يوم األرض من مختلف بلدان العالم .
يحتفل العالم بيوم األرض العاملي سنويا أثناء فصل الربيع في النصف الشمالي وفي فصل اخلريف في النصف اجلنوبي. حيث أسس هذا اليوم السيناتور األمريكي غايلورد نيلسون كيوم بيئي تثقيفي في عام 1970، ويحتفل به اليوم في بلدان كثيرة كل سنة. بعد تزايد االهتمام العاملي بالبيئة ، وفي محاولة للحد من التلوث وتدمير البيئة اللذين يهددان مستقبل البشرية ، فقد أعلن أن تاريخ 22 أبريل من كل عام يخصص للنشاطات البيئية للفت
االنتباه إلى مشاكل البيئة التي تعاني الكرة األرضية ، وقد أطلق على ذلك اليوم اسم "يوم األرض العاملي".
فالببيئة تعني كل العناصر احلية وغير احلية التي توجد حول وعلى وداخل سطح الكرة األرضية من هواء وماء وتربة وما يعيش فيها من مخلوقات حية. كل هذه العناصر تسمى مكونات البيئة. ويتوقف مدى جناح اإلنسان في احلياة على مدى تأقلمه مع مكونات البيئة و ما فيها من مقومات، . فإن أحسن استغاللها والتحكم في مصادرها قدر له النجاح وإن أساء استعمالها أو فشل في السيطرة عليها كان مصيره الفشل، وقد أصبحت مشكلة تلوث البيئة خطرا يهدد اجلنس البشرى بالزوال بل ويهدد حياة كل الكائنات احلية والنباتات ، فالتلوث البيئي هو أخطر كارثة يواجهها اإلنسان، ، واكتسب التلوث صفة العاملية بسبب أن امللوثات تنتقل الى جميع أنحاء العالم، فهي ال تعرف حدودا إقليمية لها. فهناك العديد من الدول التي ال متارس نشاطا صناعيا لكنها تعاني من التلوث ، فالرياح والسحب والتيارات املائية تساهم في نقل امللوثات من بلد آلخر وذلك نتيجة للتقدم
التكنولوجى والصناعى واحلضارى لالنسان .
ويعد اإلنسان هو السبب الرئيسي واألساسي في إحداث عملية التلوث في البيئة وفي ظهور امللوثات بأنواعها اخملتلفة سواء كان تلوث الهواء أو التلوث بالنفايات أو تلوث املياه أو التلوث السمعي أو تلوث التربة أو التلوث والتقدم السريع العلمي ، فالتقدم الذي يستخدم و هو الذي يصنع و هو الذي يخترع الغذائي. فاإلنسان هو الصناعي وبناء املصانع اخملتلفة التي تصب يوميا مقادير هائلة من اخمللفات والنفايات فى مياه األنهار واحمليطات مما يفسدها ويجلعها غير صاحلة لالستعمال األدمى او لنمو الكائنات احلية . فالسيارات والطائرات و الصناعات ورفاهيته وتقدمه و عملية قطع األشجار حيث ينقص عدد األشجار مما يعني لراحته التي يقوم بها االنسان تقلص مساحة الغابات والتي متد الكرة األرضية بكميات كبيرة من األكسجني وتخلصها من غاز الكربون. حيث أثبتت الدراسات أن السبب الرئيسي النقراض مجموعة من الكائنات يعود إلى تدمير مواطنها، بسبب تدخل االنسان في الطبيعة بشكل سلبي، حيث تواجه تلك الغابات حملة هائلة لتدميرها وتقطيع اشجارها، ما يؤدي
إلى انهيار نظم حيوية بأكملها، وضمنها األنواع احلية التي تعيش فيها، كل هذا كان على حساب البيئة.

tell me something about your life and the educational background.
I come from a very artistic family. My sister is a musician, one of my brothers is an architect while the other is a philosopher and painter. My parents are both very creative, and have always been extremely supportive to me.
Since I was very young, I drew clothes, knitted and made accessories.
I studied natural sciences in College, art history and fine arts – but only to realize that fashion is where I excel.
Why did you choose to design handbags?
Handbags have always occupied an important part of my creations.
I can’t imagine our lives without fun and functional accessories! Can you?
What else do you design?
I’ve designed women’s wear for as long as I can remember as well as jewelry. At the moment, my collection consists of bracelets, belts, journals and handbags, for both women and men.
My custom made clothes and one of a kind jewelry are only available upon request, but can be seen in all our ad campaigns.
What’s unique about your designs?
I won an innovation award from the Iceland Design Forum in 2006 based on the overall design of my bags and how I managed to use the fish in such a structured way in luxury products. Sea-leather, particularly stingray skin, has already been used, but for souvenir items mostly. No one had ever done a full collection based around the incredibly beautiful sea-leather in luxury good.
What materials do you use to design bags?
My collections are made from Italian leather and sea-leather. The sea-leather I use is farm grown Atlantic salmon and farm grown African perch, both extraordinarily exotic and incredibly eye-catching.
Why sea-leather?
In reality, it was the day where I fell upon the sublime fish skins of the most unlikely colors that I got the idea. It clicked. It was about 15 years ago, I had found a summer job in a fish-factory. I saw the fashion potential right away.
I looked into the feasibility of using the fish as traditional leather and created some prototypes. It’s only a few years later while studying fashion design in Europe that I heard about an Icelandic tannery transforming the
fish skins into usable sea-leather. I contacted them right away. Soon after, we prototyped a collection of bags made from sea leather. Today, I create quality pieces that will be passed on from mother to daughter. Sea-leather ages amazingly!
I know that hearing the word “sea-leather” sounds new – so I want to emphasize that sea-leather smells like regular leather, just like any other exotic leather; ostrich, crocodile or snake.
When and how did you start your business?
One could say I started my business when I was little and people started buying my creations – but I founded my company UNNURWEAR in 2006.
What was the motivation behind a career in designing?
For me the motivation is simply the need for creating. I never thought of having a designer’s career – rather to do the things that I love most and make a living from it.
Where are your stores located?

When did you introduce yourself in the Middle-east?
In the beginning of 2009 UNNURWEAR teamed up with KHT International, a very versatile and strong business partner in the Middle-east to distribute the UNNUR brand. Together we are just getting started to explore the market.
Do you have any presence in Kuwait?
We are working on establishing our presence in Kuwait. In the meantime the beautiful people of Kuwait can easily get our products through our UNNUR online store.
What are you currently working on?
New and exciting products! We just launched a beautiful mini clutch, STINA, which many of our clients use as a cosmetic bag to match their larger bags, and then we also launched an incredible tote, KRISTIN, which can be worn in many different ways.
What is the ultimate goal that you wish to achieve?
My ultimate and every day goal is to be happy, stay healthy and to become a better human being.
How often do you travel?
It really varies. I travel a lot both for inspiration and work but also a lot to see my family and friends. I’ve lived in 3 different continents in the past 10 years, America, Europe and Asia and travel there often.
What’s your favorite food?
Vegetables and goat cheese followed with Icelandic candy and ice-cream for dessert!
What’s your favorite color?
I really don’t have one favorite, but I’m often drawn towards strong bold colors.
My collections often reflect my favorite color of the moment.
What are your hobbies besides designing?
I love to go running and I also do a lot of yoga. I also like to watch movies and read to relax. But my all time favorite is to catch up with my friends and loved ones.
What new experiments would you like to try with your designing?
I’m constantly pushing my boundaries as a designer. Last year I did a men’s collection and many collaborations in different fields, art, music and of course fashion. I’m obsessed with lights of all kinds, and am very interested in exploring the design of lights further.
What kind of music you listen to?
Music is such an endless ocean of inspiration to me. I listen to anything from Arabic lounge to Lady Gaga. Lately I’ve been listening a lot to the Australian band “The Cat Empire” and Sergio Mendes featuring the Black Eyed Peas.
What’s your zodiac?
My zodiac sign is cancer.
Which new markets would you like to enter into in the near future?
I’d like to continue exploring the markets we are currently in further, as well as designing new products for our costumers. If we strive to get better in what we do, new opportunities will present themselves for UNNUR within fashion, interior design automatically as well as other creative fields.

Before your current position, what were you doing?I have been with Hilton Hotels for 35 years. Before coming to Kuwait in September 2005, I was working for Hilton Hotel in Brisbane.
35 Years! That's a lot. Why Hilton?Well, Hilton has always given me what I expected and I saw no reason to change.
Can you describe Hilton Kuwait and tell us more about it?It is a very distinguished project. Hilton Kuwait offers several different types of rooms to suit all kinds of customers. We have the standard hotel rooms, studios which are very popular, we have chalets, presidential villas and super royal villas.The resorts spans over an area of approximately 250,000 square meters of land which makes it the largest in Kuwait. Hilton Kuwait is lucky to have 1.6 km. of exclusive beach front.
That's huge. How is the hotel organised?We have split the resort into 5 beaches as:Beach 1 is the Main building, Beach 2,3 & 4 is for Villas and Chalets, Beach 5 has a huge outdoor tent for parties.We have recently renovated and extended the capacity of the tent and it now accommodates around 800 guests. The tent is fitted with all modern facilities and state of the art safety and security equipment.
Who are your customers and where do they come from?Our visitors are many and varied, whom we might classify as follows:Commercial Visitors, here for business, especially in the nearby oil related companies and stay at our hotel.Local Leisure customers who usually visit on the weekends and sometimes on weekdays and public holidays, often occupying our villas and chalets.Long-term customers who work in Kuwait and stay at our hotel.Visitors who come for short meetings in KuwaitMeetings and Seminar customers who usually come to conduct corporate events and stay at the hotel.
Long-term customers? How long do they stay?We have customers who have been with us since the opening of the hotel in August, 2002.
Why do companies select your hotel for meetings?We offer a large variety of meeting rooms. Our meeting rooms provide a modern environment with flawless views. Also, we are away from the noise of the city, making it an unbeatable combination. In addition, we offer a variety of restaurants and outdoor facilities.
It's always instructive to get to meet influential, dynamic people who are passionate about what they do and this month presented me with a perfect opportunity.
From a close friend, I came to know about this month's interview guest and when he mentioned his passion for work and working style, I immediately seized the opportunity and asked to interview him. He's a very busy man, so I was fortunate in that my request was accepted and I got to meet him and talk to him for you.
Mr. Andreas Bossard has been the General Manager of the Hilton Kuwait Resorts since september 2005. Prior to this, he was General Manager of the Hilton Hotel in Brisbane, Australia, and has been with the Hilton Hotels for almost 35 years.
He attended swiss Hotel school at Lucerne (switzerland) and over the years has become fluent in German, english and French. In between the demands of a punishing work schedule, Mr. Andreas loves to play golf and is passionate about cooking.
What was most fascinating and the hallmark of an excellent manager was the control of small detail he had at his fingertips. Despite managing such a big resort, he knows everything there is to know about, from the plants, the food, its construction and design, you name it, Mr. Andreas knows it.

What is the hardest part about being General Manager?The hardest part is to constantly innovate, keeping up to speed with the latest ideas. I believe in change and how it will impact on the future of our business. When I first came, Beach 5 was abandoned, a dumping ground for construction material. I made some changes and installed the tent which is very popular for male wedding parties. We are just finishing the Beach 1 area and renovating it, but here's still a lot of work to be done. Hilton is a family resort and we want to make absolutely sure that it has all the facilities our customers expect and look for.
What do you consider is the best room in the hotel?It's difficult to answer that, but our Super Royal Villas are unique and very popular. They are designed and furnished by Armani Casa and each villa has its own private gym and swimming pool.(Wow! Ed)
Could you give us a hint about famous guests who have stayed in the hotel, or perhaps regulars that return periodically?I am sorry, it would be quite wrong of me to fail to protect the privacy of our guests, however, members of prominent Kuwaiti families stay with us and many members of the royal family regularly stay at our hotel.
Can you share some of the important events hosted at your hotel?We host many important events such as the International Bankers Conference and we are a host to several national days such as:Irish Ball, Rugby Ball, Caledonian Ball, and Australian National Day.
Tell me more about your gym and spa?Our gym facility has over 1000 members, thus is very important to us. The gym has been recently upgraded and we now have available some of the latest equipment from the United States and now have a separate weight room. Our spa is very popular; it has also been upgraded and expanded with new showers and facilities for Aromatherapy with an Ice Room and Sauna. It's a challenging market, so we believe in constant review and upgrading.
How do you manage your day?We have two briefings every morning. I really believe that it's very important that information flows to all members of the team and it helps in ensuring all the teams are prepared for every eventuality.
The first briefing is with the three key areas (Human Resources, Finance & Operations and Business Development) The second briefing is with the Sales team and Department heads. The information is then cascaded to the other team members.
I then have other meetings scheduled but most of the time I am on the move. I'm ideologically hands-on and go for several inspection rounds to ensure everything is working harmoniously.
How do you maintain the trees and plants at the resort?We take full advantage of our location and have planted substantial number of trees - in fact - over 6,000. Additionally, we have recently expanded the green area with the help of our small army of gardeners who take good care of the plants.
Tell me about your hobbies?I play golf and love to cook. I work with the chef to create new dishes.
Do you have a low season?We are lucky that even during summer when other hotels fall to 20% occupancy, we are running full. Even on holidays we're pretty full.
What about the future?We have currently 5 projects going on, all due for completion this year. The development plans are:1- Landscaping, 2- Renovation and extension of the main lobby area, 3- Conversion of the Mezzanine floor to an executive lounge, 4- Ballroom renovation, 5- Coffee Shops renovation
Goals for the future?We are the best resort in Kuwait. We want to remain the best, stay ahead of the competition and new developments by constant innovation.
Mr. Andreas then offered me a tour of the hotel, which I was happy to accept. He started his electric car and took me over each of the five beaches we had talked about. I felt really privileged sitting next to such an important person and listened carefully as he described each part of the resort. I was amused as he pointed out an area and said "that's our Mini shuwaikh" this was the maintenance and storage ares where damaged furniture and equipment was housed.
Mr. Andreas wanted me to see everything. He showed me Chalets and Presidential Villas also the super Royal Villas, actually taking me inside one of them to admire their beautiful design.
As I thanked him, Mr Andreas' parting remark was, "if innovation stops, everything stops." I was inclined to agree.

What is the aim or purpose of the Kuwait Science Fair?
ExxonMobil Exploration & Production Kuwait Limited and Kuwait Energy launched the Kuwait Science Fair competition back in 2008 in a shared commitment to generate student interest and excitement in science and math and to inspire Kuwait’s future scientists and innovators because a very small percentage of students are pursuing science careers. Scientists and engineers are vital for our day to day activities and we depend in one way or another on them.
When was the KSF organized?
The Kuwait Science Fair was launched in 2008 and is held annually. We are currently preparing for the launch of the third competition in October 2010.
Who's idea was it originally to organize such an event?
The competition was founded by both ExxonMobil Exploration & Production Kuwait Limited and Kuwait Energy.
How would you rate the response of this event?
Great response! In the first year of the competition, students were more or less hesitant, however after its first success, we’ve seen a much bigger response from students and a lot of encouragement from parents,
teachers and schools. We’ve also had middle school students wishing to participate; although the competition is reserved for high school students, we have started to open it up to 7th & 8th graders, provided they understand that they are entering a competition of high school level.
Do you see an increase in number of participants this year?
Yes, the number of students has doubled from last year to this year. We even had students from last year re-applying this year. We had 150 projects submitted at the start of our second year with over 220 students from 46 different schools.
Can you explain the different phases of the event?
The competition is divided into two main phases. In the first phase, the application phase, students that want to participate in the competition must submit application forms and their science fair proposal. More than one science fair proposal can be submitted. We’ve had students submitting up to eight!
After this first phase closes, the Kuwait Science Fair team chooses the ‘Best 100’ project ideas that will compete in the next phase, the experimental phase.
The experimental phase is reserved for the development of each student or group of students’ science project, with the follow up
by one of the KSF team members. At the end of the experimental phase, students have to defend their projects in front of six expert judges during a three-day judging period prior to the final ceremony.
The results are only announced during the awards ceremony. The awards recognize top ten projects, winning school, special recognition projects and winners of each scientific category.
Who can participate in the KSF? What is the criteria?
To participate, students must be enrolled in a high school in Kuwait and submit the registration application as well as their science fair proposal. We are still contemplating opening the competition to 7th & 8th graders next year.
What motivates students to participate in the KSF?
The prizes of course!
All projects accepted in to the competition will receive a participation prize and a certificate.

What is your evaluation process?
Projects are evaluated in two main phases, the first being the written process where a student or group of students must prepare a written project plan, a notebook, and a science fair paper in addition to their already submitted science fair proposal.
All these documents are explained in detail in the Kuwait Science Fair guidebook. The written process counts as 55% of the over-all grade. This assessment is done by the supervising KSF team member that follows the student or group throughout the experimental phase.
The second assessment phase is the verbal presentation where students must defend their project in front of expert judges. Students are assessed based on originality, the experimental process and their analytical thinking.
What support does KSF provide to the participants?
Participants qualified into the experimental phase are entitled to KD100 to purchase their required tools, a supervising teacher from the KSF team, workshops to help them jumpstart and finalize their project, and of course, 24 hours hotline via e-mail or phone to answer their enquiries.
Are schools in Kuwait supporting KSF? Did you face any hurdles?
We have received a lot of support from schools, whether private or public; however, there are still many that need extra nudge. We only received entries from students registered in 46 schools. Kuwait has over 150 high schools throughout the country.
This year, we awarded the ‘best school’ to the Kuwait English School (KES) because of their huge support of the Kuwait Science Fair and their students who participate. KES also brought in the largest number of participants in the last two years of the Kuwait Science Fair.

What about parents? Do they support KSF?
Yes, they do and all the way. We had situations where parents were even more stressed than their children during the final evaluations. We thank them all for supporting their children’s interests.

For the last two years, the competition has been under the patronage of His Highness, Sheikh Ahmad Al-Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, Minister of Oil & Information, and Chairman of Kuwait Petroleum Corporation. Is the KSF team approaching students who are participating? How?
As soon as a project has been accepted to be part of “The Best 100” it is assigned to
a KSF supervisor who will keep in contact and check up on the group at least once a week. We always follow up with students when we haven’t heard of where they are with the development of their project and we make sure that students meet deadlines and have the answers to the problems they might be facing in their experiments.
Where do you feel the support was minimal and would like to see more support in the future?
KSF has had great support since its launch and the more support we get from companies, educational institutions and volunteers to expand our KSF team the better and greater it will be. I would like to see more local companies supporting this competition in the years to come.
What message would you like to give to students for the next KSF?
The Kuwait Science Fair is a great opportunity for you as a student to develop what you deem as a solution to a challenge we face in our everyday lives. It can be as simple as testing different oils with water! You don’t need to have aced your biology or physics classes, but rather want to prove that your can make a difference, and we all can do that!

What are the prizes for the winners? How many winners do you select?
Each of “The Best 100” receives a participation certificate in addition to KD100 in vouchers. We also have prizes for the top three ranking projects which I mentioned earlier. We also reward the top ten winners, the special recognition prize winners and the scientific category winners.
What are your future plans for KSF?
The third annual Kuwait Science Fair competition is set to launch on October 10th and we are working on making it even bigger with great prizes awaiting students and schools.
What new changes are you planning for the next year's event?
The competition process will stay the same; however, we are planning on bigger and better challenges and surprises for students!

" Good morning," she was already sitting behind my desk, wearing my glasses, and taking the role that she probably dreamed of. She's just a kid, and I, no doubt, am just a kid too. " I wanna be a compooter!".
"You've got a great imagination kid, but you can't be a compooter. By the way, it's a compuooter!"
The cute little kid didn't mind that. She insisted that she wanted to become a computer, and she began with the key board.
The key board is her favorite, it's like it does make her feel comfortable, and confidant because of all the power she can exert to change the world; at least mine, using only her little thumb.
" No, kid, this is my article! Don't you mess with my article!"
Even though I was loud enough, my face was blank, and didn't convey a message beyond my complete indifference.
I soon joined her in the game of messing up my article altogether. She sat on my lap, relaxed in my embrace, and watched me playing the game I knew not very well.
I wrote:
A letter to the long waited spring.
Dear spring 2010, I love you!
This morning I am delighted, happy, and joyful. in my lap, there sits the queen of my heart. A little girl you know I adore from the depth of my heart. But that doesn't seem to be enough. So tell me, spring, what is enough love?
Thank you! Then I waited a little, looked in her round bright brown eyes, and began thinking of a response that spring can give me. I asked myself: If spring can talk about love, what can it say?
Then the responses came to me in the form of a book.
I opened Born For Love, a book about love by Dr. Leo Buscaglia.
In that book, the spring spoke:
"The years have convinced me that there is a streak of madness in even the most sane among us and that if we don't act upon this madness in the fanciful sense, we will surely go mad, in the classical sense."
I was amazed by the answer, because it wasn't as direct and clear as I hoped.
I wrote:" ...So, Spring, are you telling me to be mad?!"
I looked at the face of the kid, and she broke into a grin.
I grinned too.
I finally wrote:" There you go, brother, we've become mad too!"

After being planted, timber bamboo plants are hardly noticeable above the
ground for nearly four years. But once their roots are fully formed around the four-year mark, they can grow a remarkable 80 feet in just six weeks.
The key to their amazing growth is their extremely solid foundation. To learn about how emerging companies can create a solid foundation for their businesses, the other day, I interviewed Ken Lodi, creator of The Bamboo Principle.
What Ken explained to me is that the solid foundation of a company is rooted around its employees. But, importantly, Ken explained that a company's greatest resource is NOT its employees.
Rather, the greatest resource is the TALENT of its employees.
The fact is this - most companies have some great employees that are underutilized. Conversely, great entrepreneurs and business owners are able to figure out what their employees like to do. Interestingly, what they like to do is oftentimes what employees are best at, and what they will achieve the best results at.
Ken equated this to sports. Players on your team, he explained, don't necessarily have to be great at everything. For example, on a football team, the quarterback doesn't need to be a great punter. And the punter doesn't need to be a great quarterback. The problem arises when your quarterback is spending his days punting. The business owner must figure this out and make the requisite changes.
The best way to figure this out is to mentor and coach your employees. You need to figure out what their values and goals are, and modify their roles as needed to leverage them. When meeting with employees ask open ended questions (not just "yes" and "no" questions). For example, ask "if you could spend the majority of your work day doing just one thing, what would it be?"
Employees too must figure out what they value and enjoy and make sure their job roles are in line with this. This is the key to improving employee productivity, satisfaction and performance. It's called "making a vacation out of your vocation."
Both employees and entrepreneurs/business owners should develop a fresh assessment of themselves. What do you/they like to do most in their jobs? What makes you/they say "cool?" And, ask yourself, "if money wasn't an issue and you could do one thing with your work life, what would it be?"
Success requires a solid foundation. Six minute abs don't work. Nothing is fast and easy. You need to work hard to build a solid foundation from which you can build success. And this foundation is your employees. And making sure you are leveraging your employees to their best potential.
So make sure you quarterback is not playing defense. Talk to your employees. Find out what they value and enjoy doing. And create a workplace that supports their values, leverages their talents, and achieves massive and successful growth - just like the timber bamboo.

The 1988 film 'Rain Man' starring Dustin Hoffman, both raised the profile of autism and some suggest
gave it rather a bad press. Hoffman's character suffers from Savant syndrome which is a rare, but extraordinary, condition in which individuals with a serious autistic disorder have some 'island of genius' that stands in marked, incongruous contrast to their overall handicap. Perhaps as many as one in ten autistic people have such remarkable abilities in varying degrees and one in every hundred shows some autistic tendencies. In the film, Raymond, the autistic inheritor of $3million, has phenomenal mathematical skill.
Nobody knows for sure what causes autism, that curious spectrum of conditions where a person seems divorced from external realities. Many researchers worldwide are looking into this disorder, often with inadequate funding and few breakthrough ideas at this time, but some common threads are emerging leading to the tentative conclusion that autism is a disorder of the cortex, the folded, outermost part of the brain. Its cause has been attributed to 'maternal rubella', 'genetics, 'heavy metals' and 'nutrition', but the truth so far is that results are unclear. Promising research from the USA indicates that a possible placental abnormality - a 'foetal window'- may be linked to autism.
The cortex is the proverbial "grey matter": the part of the brain which is largely responsible for higher brain functions, including sensation, voluntary muscle movement, thought, memory and reasoning. In autistic people, it's not so much that these don't work at all;they just seem to work differently to everyone else. In many, it seems that the brain develops too quickly, beginning at about a year old. By age ten, their brains are of normal size, but the routing diagram has gone haywire. Autistic brains grow too fast at the wrong time, and early development is consequently disturbed so problems in the cortex compromise language and reasoning abilities.
I imagine a traffic signal computer controlling a citywide system of traffic lights. Something goes wrong with the software and the result is traffic chaos, with paralysis in some areas and motorists taking shortcuts in others.
In other words, and putting it simply, the brain of an autistic child is wired up differently. The symptoms are most prominent in social interaction and problem solving because they require the highest degree of interaction with the world around them. Autism sufferers with normal IQ's can have the emotional mentality of a seven year old. Those more mildly affected - after all we are talking about a spectrum of disorders - tend to be over-direct, almost rude in conversation, have particular and exclusive interests which they may or may not share with others and poor non-verbal communication. Perhaps we know someone like this - it is by no means uncommon.
Autistic people think and perceive differently - the world around them looks and feels very strange, frighteningly different from ours and they appear to have trouble making sense of it. Nursing mothers have recorded that to their dismay, their infant is apparently not interacting with them and appropriately bonding during the feeding process, instead is just 'looking at the sky'. Since the ability to either block or effectively process sensory input is impaired, this almost random neural firing causes stress which often results later on in challenging behaviour, which in turn exerts emotional and social pressure on those around them.
While social and communication skills may be compromised by unique wiring in the brain, other abilities are actually enhanced. For example, people with autism have often a phenomenal ability to use the visual parts of the right side of the brain to compensate for problems with language processing, which means they can process detail with almost unbelievable accuracy. London-born artist Stephen Wiltshire drew a 4m long panorama in pen, ink and pencil of a 10km stretch of
the London skyline after just one brief helicopter trip along the Thames - and did it in only five days. On a huge curved canvas, almost every major building in the city was drawn to scale - from the Swiss Re Tower (better known as the Gherkin) to the high rises of Canary Wharf - with the number of floors and architectural features all recaptured in precise detail. The drawing is all the more miraculous because it is not an exact representation - there is artistic licence in what he does. Sizes of buildings change without compromising detail and heights also, indicating that the skill is not some kind of superlative mental photography, but creative genius also - as if he thinks the buildings really ought to be this size and in this location - not the work of a performing chimp.
Autism is a spectral disorder, meaning that it can affect people in different degrees. A colleague related the story to me of a child she was tutoring - perhaps an undiagnosed autistic. She likened the tutorial to walking around a building having many doors, all of which seemed locked. The child was unable to sit still or concentrate, busying himself instead with tasks and activities unrelated to the lesson, seemingly in a world of his own until 'Titanic' was mentioned, and a door into his mind opened. Not the film, or the disaster, simply the ship itself. When asked to draw the ship, he produced a drawing of startling accuracy, conversing all the time to himself about the minutiae of the ship, its dimensions, and crew, length, draught and engine capacities. He had, it seemed, a memory like flypaper for anything to do with this tiny window of knowledge - a shortcut to clarity.
Here's a little game which might be used by a professional psychologist. It involves arranging for a child whom we'd like to test to observe a scenario like this. A girl puts her doll into a box. She then leaves the room. Her brother moves the doll to a drawer. The girl returns and wants her doll back. The child under test is asked where they think the girl might look. Typical four-year-olds will realise that the girl does not know that the doll has been moved, and will expect the girl to look in the box but an autistic child will suggest looking in the drawer, on the assumption that another person's knowledge, or perception will be the same as their own. In other words, there is no awareness of the other person's point of view.
There are sixty million people worldwide who are affected by autism. The United Nations General Assembly unanimously declared 2 April as World Autism Awareness Day and this year will be its third anniversary, when the UN reaffirms its commitment to all those with disabilities. – a commitment rooted in its fundamental principle of human rights for all.

the scientific CenterThe Scientific Center of Kuwait, located in Salmiya, Kuwait, serves as a center for environmental education of the gulf region. Initiated by the late Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, KSC spans over 80,000 square meters with the building covering over 18,000 square meters. The center also houses the largest aquarium in the Middle East, holding over 100 different species of animals. Along with the aquarium, it also contains an IMAX theatre, a harbor of historic dhows, and a gift shop among other contents.
The Scientific Center, as it is locally referred to, is home to one of the largest aquariums in the Gulf region with the capacity of one of the tanks at 1.5 million liters. It also has coffee shops and a food court along with a walkway that shows the more scenic views of the coastline of Kuwait. The center also attracts hundreds of students each year on field trips, organized by schools and the Scientific Center. The aim of the Scientific Center is to spread awareness to the people of Kuwait and visitors alike about the different ecosystems of the region as well as the history of the country, while also encouraging the preservation of said goals.

The world has so many colors to offer, however my favorite color is the color of earth. Hey what are you
thinking, I’m talking about the color green, popularly known as the color of envy. Let me share with you a little anecdote from my childhood. One day my mom asked me, do you know what’s the color of earth? Without even scrapping my little head answered its green. The reason of my answer was simple; I have grown up with trees and plants all around me. The color I actually grew up with is undoubtedly green in dominance. As a toddler I spent my time lying on the green grass, looking at the trees and flowers around. I am thankful to my dad who always uses to tell me that how essential trees are. He never appreciated when we siblings use to get some flowers for him, as he said the flowers look good on the plants not in our hands, they are not accessories with which we should decorate our home. It was just like a custom to water plants in our home garden every alternative day. My dad made me learned that when a plant smiles and when it cries. I still believe that the nature has their own language which is understood by few. I have seen the plants, the trees smiling at me when I use to water them in scorching heat. I have seen them rejoicing when I use to clean their leaves. Otherwise, if we talk practically all
of we know that different varieties of materials ranging from paper, furniture and thousand more items of our daily use are invented from the woods. Without these things it is hard to even imagine a living. Well that’s the green knowledge I got from my family but the serious question here is, are we passing the same knowledge to the generation next. I am skeptical as even I have no more plants in my luxurious apartment and I no more tell kids in my family to water the plants and now if they never love and like green, its not they but we are to be blame. I must agree that I am so busy imparting them the knowledge of how to use internet, video games etc. that I forget to tell them the importance of being green. Now, when they don’t even have the knowledge of the plants, the trees, the flowers, the water and other natural resources, how can we expect them to talk about saving the trees, or debating over global warming issues? Aren’t we becoming too demanding here?
I am sure that every one of us has pass school, read the geography and economics of the world. So, we all understand the simple law, that the resources are scarce and the means are limited. Now, let me ask everyone including myself, Are we going to use any of that knowledge or we are going to leave nothing for the generation next. They have the right to cherish the same things in life as we did and are still doing. Are we really going to wait till the last drop of water finishes or the
last tree is being cut? Now only one thought comes to my mind that instead of changing the world, instead of changing everyone let’s just begin by bringing a change in ourselves. This sounds easy; I can surely take my responsibility. I am going to take a pledge now that on my birthday I am going to plant a tree. I heard someone saying if you start a work believe it’s half done.
Recently, I received an invitation to attend a grand function marking the 40th anniversary of earth day on April 22 in 2010. I was glad that at least in one form or other we are doing something. It will surely help in creating awareness to some extent, and even if events like this helps in influencing mind of an individual, believe me the job is well done. Without the participation of masses nothing big can be achieved. All result well when we have maximum participation. I hear people say and spread that it’s too late too save the earth at this crossroads but the truth is, there is still a future to look at and many more generations to come.
Often I have seen my friends; my colleagues holding discussion over topics like global warming, rising temperature, frequent quakes, Tsunami and so on but my concern has always remained how I can contribute as an individual. We can just commence by following little steps like planting trees, keeping the environment clean, using paper bags, and creating awareness with the aid of media. Isn’t there so much to do? These minor beginnings could actually mark the beginning of a whole new world; it could be the onset of a new revolution.
I think the main concern is that we always criticize the world, the mankind, the humanity but we never realize that we are also the part of the same mankind. If, everyone takes their responsibility the world will be a new world to live in. We will thus not only survive but will live. Let’s pledge today that we will support our earth, like we support everything we love. We will do at least something which will make our earth the most beautiful and live able planet. Shall I take the privilege in asking you, are you going green this 2010?
Instead of changing everything and everyone on this earth, let’s
think of changing ourselves.

What was the idea behind the Scientific Center?Conceived in 1992 by the late Amir of Kuwait, H.H. Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the idea was to create a scientific center for families, with no particular details, so that the people of Kuwait can increase their knowledge in an interesting way. I was delighted to be appointed as the Project Manager for this initiative by KFAS (Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences).
Tell us more about the early development stages?It took us time to research and to gather all the information we needed to develop a plan for the Center. Careful selection of the consultants and designers was undertaken from mid 1994 until 1995 and, once they had been engaged, serious construction started. The Center was ultimately handed over towards the end of 1999 so, effectively, it was a gift to the people of Kuwait in celebration of the new millennium.
The Scientific Center, Kuwait was officially opened on 17th April 2000, which means that it celebrates its milestone 10th Anniversary on 17th April this year.
How many visitors did you receive in the first year?Our initial target was to receive around 400,000 visitors per year, but within the first year we surpassed this target with a total of 432,632 visitors. We then raised the target to achieve half a million visitors in a year, and once again the visitors came to the Center in numbers which exceeded our expectations.
So the bar was set even higher, with the next target set to achieve 700,000 visitors. We developed an aggressive marketing plan which resulted in around 730,000 visitors for the year 2009... and so the success continues. In total, during the 10 years that we’ve been open, we have already welcomed almost 5.5 million visitors and, of course, we look forward to welcoming many more in the coming years.
How unique is the Scientific Center?We were the first scientific center in the Middle-East and are still unique in the sense that we
needs, so we have to ensure we provide attractions that will engage their interest now and will encourage them to come back again and again.
Can you tell us about the Annual Membership?It is an amazing membership with a number of benefits. We are currently reviewing it to make sure it is reasonably priced, and that it offers great value for money. The membership allows unlimited visits to the Center, including entry to The Aquarium and The Discovery Place and, in addition, to 2 or 3 IMAX films per year. As an added bonus, the package also entitles members to discounts on food and other services at the Center.
Who are your guests and visitors?The Scientific Center is a place all Kuwaitis and resident expatriates like to visit. In addition, we attract a lot of visitors who travel to Kuwait to visit their families or friends, and who make it a point to visit the Center while they’re here.
Most guests that visit the Amiri Diwan, the Crown Prince and the Prime Minister are treated to a visit to The Scientific Center. In addition, all the Heads of State and Prime Ministers who come to Kuwait have visited us - usually accompanied by a number of journalists!
Therefore it is a great responsibility and obligation on us to keep the building looking at its best - fresh and clean all the time. We actually spend a lot of money to ensure the building is maintained in perfect condition.
I saw a lot of students at the Center when I arrived. What are they here for?

What challenges do you face?Our greatest challenge is to maintain peoples’ interest. Kuwait’s population is small and tourism is minimal. The Scientific Center has to continue to be a great attraction for everyone, so we regularly change our programs and constantly introduce new ideas to maintain the interest. We regularly have new workshops and exhibits. We are now focussing on attracting repeat visitors and, to do so, we have to find new attractions. After all, someone who visited the Center ten years ago is now ten years older and has different interests and educational

It is not unusual for us to host between 1000 and 1500 students per day from both private and government schools. Our team enjoys giving them useful information to make their trips interesting and meaningful. On an annual basis, representatives from the Ministry of Education meet with us to plan and schedule all the school visits across the academic year. We are proud to say that the Scientific Center is an integral part of the infrastructure within the educational pyramid of Kuwait, and such responsibility demands great planning and preparation.
Can you tell us about the exhibits?We started working on a new strategy last October to keep changing the exhibits every six months. We introduced the concept of travelling exhibitions, and we are currently hosting a flight exhibition from Sweden, which has proved to be very popular. We have another interesting exhibition on display soon, which will be arriving in Kuwait from the Chicago Field Museum. The Dinosaur called T-Rex (Tyrannosaurus Rex, which means tyrant lizard king) will soon be in residence in Salmiya. Discovered by a scientist in North-West America, this T-Rex exhibit has already been on display in a number of cities across the United States and will open in Kuwait on 2nd May at the Scientific Center.
For later in the year, starting 14 November, we have plans to host a very unique exhibition on
MUSIC. It will be an exhibition of all the science related to music so, for many people, it will be very interesting and very educational.
We will continue to search for new and interesting exhibitions that we can bring to Kuwait, and will be visiting the ECSITE (European Network of Science Center and Museums ) in Europe and the ASTC (Association of Science-Technology Centers) in the US to see and evaluate new exhibits. We are members in both organizations and accredited by them. We are also a member of Giant Screen Cinema Association.
I came here to see the Penguins last summer. Can you tell us more about them?We believe that people are always eager for new things and, since we are a member of EAZA (European Association of Zoos and Aquaria) we made a request to them for the penguins. After fulfilling all their strict requirements, we welcomed the penguins to our Center last July. Indeed, they were such a big attraction that
we had around 91,000 visitors during the first month they were here, which was the highest attendance for any month since the Center opened. I believe it is a great opportunity for everyone to see the penguins, and I am sure there are millions of people who have never seen penguins in reality. Until their arrival, the Shark had been the star of the Aquarium, but now I believe the penguins have relegated the shark to a supporting feature!
We have 8 African penguins (4 males and 4 females). There are around 24 different species of penguins and, although our general perception is that all penguins live on ice, in fact it is only one of the species that live on the ice. All penguins live in the southern hemisphere.
We feed them with local sardines. We tried to give them the local Maide (mullets) but they did not like it. They also like cuttlefish. They eat 2 to 3 times a day, and each penguin consumes around 1 to 2 kilos of fish every day.
We recently held a competition to name the penguins which attracted around 1,300 participants with over 8,000 names suggested. A committee of 5 judges have now completed short-listing the names, and the selected names will be announced during our 10th Anniversary celebration on 16th April.
What new attractions do you have in IMAX?On 24th June we will be launching the movie ‘ARABIA 3D’ in which I have been personally involved for the past 3 years. I am one of fifteen members from different countries on the advisory panel. We have been reviewing different aspects of the movie, including picture, locations, and script. It’s a wonderful movie revealing a unique culture, a history full of adventure, an environment of extreme challenges, a people of strong faith, and a chance to bridge cultures and reduce misunderstanding between peoples. I am sure this will be a hit in Kuwait. The movie will be exclusively shown at the Scientific Center.
What message would you like to convey to young people?My message to the youth is to read, because reading is very important. It is the first order revealed in the Holy Quran. Unfortunately, many young people today do not read. I love my computer and use it frequently, but that does not stop me from reading!
Finally, can you tell us about your 10th Anniversary celebrations?Yes, the celebration is on 16 April. Everyone is invited! It will be lots of fun for everyone, and especially for families and children. We will have special band performances and a laser show. The whole building will be lit, and the celebration will conclude with an amazing firework display.

Bibi Sabahat Shah is a psychologist practicing in Kuwait. Her area of speciality is child and adolescent psychology. She earned her Masters in Counseling Psychology and then her Ph.D in Child/Adolescent Psychology from the City University of New York.
Q: I am a 20-year-old college student and I have bad sleep and study habits. My main problem is procrastination- I put things off and have trouble keeping up with classes. I also sleep only 2 hours a night. I have trouble staying asleep and getting into a good sleep routine. Am I just lazy or is this a disorder?
Answer: Sleeping two hours a night can certainly wreak havoc on your day and keep you from performing at your best. There may be many reasons why you are not sleeping well. It’s important to first consult your physician to check out various physical issues, such as too much caffeine or refined sugar, difficulty breathing or something biochemical. All of these can make it hard to sleep and cause insomnia. If once you go to sleep, you sleep well, the problem may be getting to bed. A good nighttime sleep routine can help. Try to begin your routine half an hour before your bedtime every night. Think of your routine as the way for you to unwind and get your body into sleep mode. You can start dimming lights, turn down or turn off TV, drink milk or have a light snack, read in bed, etc.
It does not sound like you're lazy. You might be anxious, depressed or thinking obsessively. You might have a problem with procrastination or with relating to the structure or authority of school. Or you may just need better self-direction, time-management or study skills. I would recommend talking to a counselor at your university and taking the first step towards a better self-direction. They can help you set up a study schedule and help you with time management. Remember that all of these steps are for your self-improvement and while they may seem difficult at first- the end result is going to be a happier and healthier you- both physically and psychologically.
Q: I am a mother of two and am eager to work out, diet and lose some weight. The problem is my husband and family. They cause me to overeat and don’t take my diet or healthy eating habits seriously. I am more tempted to eat the wrong foods because of the food choices they make. Everytime we argue, I want to forget about everything and so I just sit down and eat. How can I try to stay healthy and eat better?
Answer: Firstly, your husband doesn't cause you to eat. You cause yourself to eat because you have yet to find an alternative to do in a moment of emotional pain. What your husband is doing is causing you the emotional pain which causes you to react and eat.
Secondly, you also have to figure out what feelings you're trying to ignore by eating rather than deal with directly. But let me assure you, food doesn't make any problems go away.
You have an argument with your husband and it upsets you; perhaps it makes you angry or frustrated or fearful of what might happen to your marriage in the future. Food is always going to be there to comfort you, probably very nearby. Unfortunately, the core problem and resulting feelings remain unaddressed. You then compound the difficulty by eating; you wind up feeling worse about yourself, which then puts you at a disadvantage in the relationship by influencing your own state of mind.
Some short-term suggestions. Make a list of other things in your life you can do besides eating that make you feel good, and put whatever equipment is required in a very handy place so you can resort to a better source of comfort in a moment of crisis. Maybe it's going out for a half-hour walk. Or working out in your room with the door closed. Putting on some music you like, or calling a friend. Writing your feelings in a journal can also be immensely helpful and insightful. These are things that truly nourish you. They also help clarify the mind.
For the long term, you have to learn how, and probably when, to talk to your husband about anything. If you don't like the way he talks to you, you must tell him. Do it kindly; tell him that when he talks to you like that it makes you feel unloved and scares you. And then address the problem-solving part of the conversation for a time when you can both talk reasonably.
Have you given any thought to why he is so willing to drive you crazy? What in the relationship isn't working for him? What is he feeling resentful about? If you think about the relationship from his perspective, you may just be able to have a
conversation that solves problems instead of one in which you inflict pain on each other. Sometimes doing all this is very difficult and seeking the help of a marriage counselor may be a good idea.
Q. I am very concerned about my daughter. She is only 6 years old and has a weight problem. I am worried about her health and the problems she faces at school. Her doctor is also worried and wants me to help her lose weight. I am trying to help her but when I am not around or while I am at work, she sneaks and eats food that she is not supposed to eat. She also doesn’t get the exercise she needs. How can I help her understand that I am only trying to help her? She has been called "fat" at school and this hurts her feelings.
Answer: There is only one way to make a six year old--or a 60 year old--understand you are trying to help. By actively helping. There is no need to explain that you're trying to help, just be helpful without announcing it. No speeches. No forbidding of food. What your daughter needs most is exercise, not just to burn off calories but to safeguard her health and prevent diabetes. Every day, take your daughter out for a 45-minute walk or active play. Teach her how to jump rope. Play hide and seek. Allow her to experience the pleasure of movement and do it so regularly it becomes a habit she can't live without. Make this a special time to spend with your daughter, so she looks forward to exercising with the added incentive of having time with you. Exercise combats the inertia that is driving your daughter to eat and is in danger of compromising her physical health. It's also affecting her social life, which will only make everything worse. Keep healthy foods on hand, most of all plenty of fresh fruit like grapes, apples, oranges, sliced cantaloupe, etc. Don’t buy or keep any foods that are not good for her at home. End meals with fresh fruit, too, as it provides a satisfying sense of closure that could help prevent snacking. See that your daughter drinks plenty of water and just don't buy soda. Instruct all others in the home to do the same.

How long you have been living in Kuwait?I’ve been in Kuwait for the past six years, but overall I’ve been in the Gulf Countries for fourteen years.
How did you feel when you won the Mercedes Trophy 2010?Winning something will always make anybody feel good, but this was a special occasion for me as it was the first time I had participated in this event.
Apart from golf, do you play any other sport?Funnily enough, squash is my passion … and I have been in Division 1 in Duffer’s League for

CityPages conqueror for the month of April is a person of similar inclination, since he is among those people who love to win in crunch times. the Mercedes trophy, Kuwait, was an amateur golf tournament played at the sahara Golf and Country Club in March in which more than 112 players battled for golfing supremacy. Players were divided into three categories according to their golfing skills. they were all teeing off with the intention to lift the trophy, but there was one man who was to stand between them and their prize. nadeem shafi was participating for the first time in a Golf tournament and, like the others, he was competing to win. He knew he could be victorious because he had a determination - he had belief in himself and he was focused towards his target. so it was no surprise that ultimately he was the winner in his category. But he is not going to stop here - in september he will be representing Kuwait in stuttgart, Germany, at the World Finals, and we have a strong belief that he will win that title for us too. For many of you the name of nadeem shafi will be strange as any reference to Golf, but all of our readers must be aware of the name of ernst & Young, one of the world’s leading auditing and professional services firms. As well as excelling on the golf course, Mr. nadeem shafi is a partner in this firm.

Other than this I was Pakistan junior no.3 position holder in Snooker during my school/college years , I was Captain of my college cricket team, I have played league cricket in the U.K. for seven years during my student /professional training years and recently I was shortlisted for the trials for Kuwait’s Cricket Team. But my professional work commitments mean that it’s really hard to find time for all my sporting interests. Therefore, I am moving now to Golf as it is less time consuming and less physically demanding as compared to squash and cricket.
Can you tell us more about yourself, and especially about your educational background and professional life?I am a Chartered Accountant and qualified with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW); now I am a Fellow of ICAEW. Before this I completed my education in the U.K. and did my Foundation Course from University of West minister(London). At the time I had started applying for internships but only achieved success when I passed the foundation exams with distinction.
How will you define that period?Those were really testing days because I had to work from 9am to 5pm, and then over time plus finding time for my studies as well. But whatever I am today is a result of hard work and dedication in those early days.
When did you join Ernst & Young?I joined Ernst & Young as a staff in 1996 and was admitted as a partner in 2004, and at that time I was one of the youngest persons to become a partner; in one of the leading professional services firm in the world.
What are the criteria to become a partner of Ernst & Young?Understandably the criteria are really tough, and the only way of entry has to be through achieving extremely high levels of technical and personal skills such as people handling, and communication skills and contribution towards the growth of the companyalong with practical demonstration of these skills over a period of time.
What do you consider to be your greatest achievement to date?Professionally the greatest achievement was to become a partner in Ernst & Young. And as a Person to continue to be a good son, supportive brother, loving husband, caring father and last but not least to contribute to the social welfare of the community and needy. I am also on the Board of Trustee of Diya Pakistan (www.diyapak.org). The mission of Diya is to help alleviate poverty by promoting literacy through merit based scholarships.
Who are your prominent clients in Kuwait?Ernst & Young is one of the largest professional services firm in the world, so you would expect that we have numerous important companies amongst our clients. In Kuwait we are the largest professional services firm and a large number of reputed Kuwaiti companies are our audit and non-audit clients.
What is your role as a partner in Ernst & Young?As a Partner my role is quite wide and covers multiple tasks and responsibilities. For example, on my audit clients I have to ensure that we meet all internal and external audit and accounting regulations in the conduct of an audit, deal with the audit client staff and executives in a very professional manner, meet
our reporting deadlines, provide coaching and counseling to our audit staff throughout the audit process, provide formal written feedback on performance to audit staff, ensure audits are conducted in an efficient and effective manner, obtain feedback from our clients on our performance and then always ensuring to deliver the highest level of quality in all our actions and deliverables. In addition to this there is a whole host of internal practice management aspects of the business of running a professional services firm that I have to deal with. For example, adherence to independence and ethical requirements, office finances, staff training and counseling, etc.
How do you select your clients?As one of the largest and highly reputable professional services firm in the World we have to maintain our high standards, because no client is worth more than the name and reputation of Ernst & Young. So a company must fulfill certain criteria before becoming our client. We also formally document this process at the start and then on an annual basis we assess and document if we can continue to provide our professional services to our clients. Independence is critical to the integrity and reputation of the auditing profession and is the core to our Code of Conduct. We have strict rules and regulations in this area which have to be adhered to on an ongoing basis and there is formal monitoring and check on this.
What motivates you on a day-to-day basis?Every day is a new day and every day is a different day. There are different challenges to be faced each day, and especially in my profession where urgent and critical decisions are often needed, so it is difficult to describe just one motivational force. However, I have some great friends, colleagues, staff and senior partners who make this process quite manageable because of the culture of continuous consultation and support to each other so that you are never left alone in difficult situations.
What is your opinion on current economic crises, especially with reference to Kuwait?I believe that Kuwait’s economy can be divided into two major sectors - The first one is the

oil sector which is owned by the Kuwaiti Government, and this sector has its unique challenges. The second is the private sector, which has been affected badly by the recent global economic crises. One of the reasons is that a lot of these companies had diverted from their main business and had undertaken activities (eg. investing in stock exchange, real estate etc.) which was not their core business and did not have the right risk management systems and policies in place to prevent such actions.
What other services does your firm provide to its clients, other than auditing?Ernst & Young is a global leader in professional services and helps companies in businesses across all industries. Our 140,000 people, based in 700 locations in over 140 countires worldwide can implement a broad range of solutions in audit, tax, corporate finance, transactions, enterprise risk management and other critical business-performance issues.
How do you manage your professional and personal life?Although I have been putting in a lot of hours towards work and routinely put in 60+ hours per week at work, I do try to keep a balance between my social and work lives. But this is achieved purely by sticking to the principles of good project management. In addition to that I am lucky to have a very supportive wife and family which understands my commitment & dedication to my work and is always there supporting me with full flexibility.
Tell us about the training facility which you have recently initiated in Kuwait. What is its purpose?Three years back when I formally took the initiative to start this new venture in Kuwait with a focus on providing clients and business community with solutions beyond the boundaries of conventional training because Ernst & Young has a portfolio of experts unrivaled anywhere in the Middle East. There are good ranges of professional qualifications CAT, ACCA, CFA, CPA, CIA that we are offering to the Kuwait market and specifically giving chance to the expatriate community which has
limited opportunities to get quality education while living in Kuwait
What sort of response are you getting from the market?We are getting a tremendous response from the market .Currently we have more than 75 students for the ACCA June 2010 session on board and we are hoping to create a market for these qualifications. Other than this, only in Kuwait over the last two years,Ernst & Young training has trained more than 900 delegates from 100 different organizations, including government institutes, banks, investment companies, telecom companies, private owned industries, automobiles, oil and gas industry, petrochemical, transport, leisure industry etc.
Are there opportunities for these students in the current job market?Of course there are. And we will also provide our successful students with the opportunity to become trainers within the organization.
What advice was given to you when you were travelling to the U.K.?My father told me two things which I still remember and work towards. His first piece of advice was that “Hard work has never killed anyone” so I never try to shy away from difficult tasks. The second was “Never keep an eye on someone else’s wealth” because what is written for you by Allah is bound for you.
What sort of person do you consider yourself to be?I am a self-made person. I never take anything for granted. Whatever I am today is due to my own hard work, prayers of my parents. and. support of my wife and family.
Returning to golf, what hopes do you have for the finals in September?My morale and hopes are high and I am working on my game. Hopefully there will be some good news from Germany in September.
What message would give to young people reading this?I would pass on two key messages - Hard work and dedication is the key to success, because there are no short cuts in life. And always respect and care for your parents.

Earth Day is on April 22nd every year. Earth Day is a day to remember to take care of our planet, Earth. We can take care of our planet by keeping it clean.
We can keep Earth clean by following the rule of “reduce, reuse, recycle”. Reduce means use less. We can reduce our use of resources like water or gasoline. MetHoD: PARENT & CHILD: Peel onion and cut in half, lengthwise. Cut
into thin slices and set aside.
PARENT & CHILD: Carefully peel potatoes.
PARENT: Using a sharp knife, thinly slice potatoes.
PARENT: In a large skillet over medium heat, add 1/2 cup of oil. When hot, add potatoes and onions, season with salt and pepper, and cook, stirring occasionally for about 15 to 20 minutes, or until potatoes are tender. Drain oil and cool slightly.
PARENT & CHILD: Meanwhile, crack eggs into a medium bowl, add a pinch of salt and pepper, and whisk.
CHILD: Gently stir the potato-onion mixture into the eggs.
PARENT: Return skillet to stove over medium-high heat and add 2 Tbsp. oil. Add egg mixture, spread evenly with a spatula, reduce heat to medium-low, and cook 8 to 10 minutes. Occasionally shake the skillet slightly and run spatula around edge.
PARENT: Take a plate that’s larger than the skillet and carefully set it upside-down atop of the pan. Quickly flip skillet over so tortilla is on plate. Slide the tortilla back into the skillet to cook the bottom, over low heat, an additional 2 to 3 minutes. Shake the pan occasionally to ensure tortilla doesn’t stick.
CHILD: Slide tortilla back onto the plate. Let rest 10 minutes, cut into wedges, and serve.

Dubai, 14 March 2010 - According to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) most recent report, road traffic accidents rank as the 10th leading cause of mortality and burden in all WHO member states, which includes all countries of the GCC and Levant. With these statistics in mind, the need for safer vehicles is fast becoming a necessity on Middle Eastern roads.
To support safety for road users, Volkswagen has produced the safest car for 2009. These efforts have now been recognised by the EuroNCAP Institute in Brussels. After compiling all crash test results for the year 2009, EuroNCAP has named the Volkswagen Golf “Safest Car of 2009”, winning out against the competition with a total of 103 points.
Commenting on the award, Stefan Mecha, Managing Director of Volkswagen Middle East, said, “The Volkswagen philosophy is to always ensure our customers are safe. Stricter EuroNCAP testing criteria were introduced at the beginning of 2009, and the Golf performed impressively in all four categories: Occupant protection of adults, protection of children, pedestrian protection and supporting safety and driver assistance systems.”
The bestseller from Wolfsburg attained the coveted five-star rating for the second consecutive year with a top score of 103 points, earning it the title of “Safest Car of 2009”. In total, 33 cars were tested last year under the new, stricter and more extensive EuroNCAP crash testing procedure.
The Golf had already attained a five-star EuroNCAP rating in 2008. Initially, this testing programme, conducted since 1997, only assessed frontal crashes, side crashes and pedestrian protection. Electronic safety and assistance systems that help prevent accidents and serious injuries are now incorporated in the rating of the new, stricter assessment method.
The Golf offers maximum safety with standard safety features that include ESP with counter-steer assist, ABS with braking assistance, anti-slip regulation (ASR), electronic differential lock (EDS), engine drag torque control (MSR), trailer stabilisation, Isofix mounting brackets for two child seats on the rear bench as well as airbags for driver and front passenger with passenger-side deactivation, including knee airbag for the driver and a head airbag system for front and rear passengers with side airbags for front passengers.
The Golf not only fulfils European safety standards. In 2008, the compact car earned the prestigious title of “Top Safety Pick” - awarded by the independent US safety institute “Insurance Institute for Highway Safety” (IIHS). In this evaluation, vehicles were tested in a frontal crash at 64 km/h and in a side crash at 50 km/h with a movable barrier shaped like the front end of an SUV. In addition, seat behaviour was studied in a rear-end crash.

Asus to launch Windows, Google
tabletsIt’s been pretty clear for the last few months that Asus is working on a tablet PC or two… and now Forbes has confirmed that the company will put out “at least two” tablets soon. Forbes spoke with Asus chairman Jonney Shih recently, who told the magazine that one will likely run Windows 7 while the other will probably run either Google Chrome OS or Google Android.
Both tablets will be designed to handle multimedia content, but there’s a pretty big difference between a tablet running Windows and one running Chrome or Android.
An Android tablet would be most like the Apple iPad it will likely compete with, since both platforms offer a smartphone-like user experience and the ability to run third party apps from an app store (although Google doesn’t officially make the Android Market available for Android devices that aren’t smartphones). Google Chrome OS is primarily a web-centric platform, as the operating system is built around the Chrome web browser and most apps will be web apps.
Windows 7 tablets, on the other hand, have the advantage (and disadvantage) of being able to run virtually any Windows program. While there are millions of apps available, they aren’t necessarily designed for finger or stylus input, which can make the user experience on Windows tablets a bit more hit or miss.

Latest iPad orders after April 12It looks like some US customers who preorder Apple Inc's new iPad tablet computer now may have to wait a bit longer to get the device, as the company appears to be having a hard time keeping up with demand.
Apple began taking preorders for the iPad on March 12, promising to ship the touchscreen device to buyers on the official sales launch date of April 3, when the iPad will hit U.S. retail store shelves.
But the company may have sold out its initial inventory, as Apple's website now promises a shipping date of April 12 for customers ordering the iPad.
Customers who placed their orders earlier this month will still get their devices by April 3, an Apple spokesman said.
The new April 12 shipping date indicates that the company has seen robust early demand for the iPad. Analysts have said that Apple is having some difficulty ramping up production due to issues in its supply chain, but that several hundred thousand iPads have already been preordered.
The iPad -- which resembles a large iPhone with a 9.7-inch (25-cm) screen designed for Web surfing, games and media consumption -- is Apple's biggest product launch since the iPhone in 2007.
It goes on sale next Saturday in the United States, starting at $499 for the basic Wi-Fi model. The high-end model tops out at more than $800.

Kuwait – 25 March, 2010: Gulf Bank recently hailed the success of its sponsorship of the “Proud to be Kuwaiti” (P2BK) Forum, which was held at the Mishref International Exhibition Fairground. The opening ceremony was held on the 16th March, under the Patronage of H.H.
