The Reunion Committee had fun preparing for this evening. Each meeting, over the past year, was a mini reunion. We did get down to the business ofplanning but there was also lots of “remember when”time. Tonight, the Class of 1970 takes a break from thepresent to walk the halls of Upper Darby High School,a place we called home forty-plus years ago. Home isdefined as where you live at a particular time; a placewhere something began or flourished; a social unitliving together.

Life’s experiences have changed us in so many ways but we have a common thread that makes this eveningspecial. Whether you scored a goal or beat a drum onthe football field; raised your voice in song at a holidayconcert; rebuilt a V-8 engine at Vo-tech or debated for the HiQ team; the school day started in yourhomeroom.

We are a family, dare we say a family of “Royal”capacity. Tonight we come together again, traveling the distance, for this “family reunion.” Reacquaint with old buddies. Get to know those you didn’t hangaround with. (We were a big class and no one kneweveryone, so no pressure!) Have fun and laugh. Get up and dance. Share memories and old stories.Take a moment to remember those who are no longerwith us and at the end of this memorable eveningpromise to meet again... in another five years!

UDHSTodayUPPER DARBY HIGH SCHOOL is the oldest and largest high school in Delaware County and one rich in tradition and history, serving the youth of Upper Darby, Drexel Hill, Clifton Heights, Millbourne and East Lansdowne.

• Facility houses and educates grades 9 through 12

• Current enrollment is approximately 3800; graduated over 800 students in 2010

• Graduation requirements:

• 135 total credits required

• 4 course minimums: English, Social Studies, Math & Science

• PE & Health: 9 through 12

• Computer Course: 1 course minimum

• Senior Graduation Project, culminating with process paper and oral presentation

• Successful Student Portfolio

• Sponsors 25 Freshman, JV and Varsity athletic teams

• Offers numerous vocal and instrumental music programs

• Mascot is still the “Royal,” now portrayed as a male lion and no longer a “jester”

• Emblem remains the Royal Oak Tree; yearbook is still the OAK, newspaper is still the ACORN

• UD School District is one of the largest township school districts in the U.S., with nearly 12,000 students district-wide.

The Upper Darby High School Jazz Bandis a top level group for advanced players.

All members are chosen from either Concert Band, Wind Ensemble or Orchestra,

with the exception of piano, bass or guitar players.

The Jazz Ensemble consists of

saxophones, trombones, trumpets, piano,

bass, guitar and percussion instruments and performs at

Spring Jazz Festivals, community events and concerts.

Musical selections include Swing, Jazz and Rock.

Membership into the Jazz Band is determined

by instrumentation needs and audition,

and is rostered for half of the school year.

The first school in Upper Darby was abuilding erected in 1779 and sold to John Sellers,Benjamin Brannon and Oliver Garrett. This was onthe site of the present high school. The secondbuilding built here was the “Eastern School,” erectedin 1872.

The Upper Darby School District has the distinction of being the oldest public school district in Pennsylvania, because it was the first district to accept the Free School Act in 1834.

Upper Darby High Schoolfirst opened its doors to students in 1894. A two-story red brick building, it was run by Miss Elizabeth D. Turner, teacher and principal. It was truly the “Little Red School House.”

In 1896 the first class of five graduated. The classes grew necessitating the new stone

building that opened in 1919. It included a gymnasium with showers and locker rooms, considered the finestin the country at that time; a two-room library and an art room with overhead lighting. The teaching staff, now atseventeen, taught four curricula: Academic, Scientific, Commercialand General. The new school housed grades 7– 12 until 1930,when Upper Darby Junior High (now Beverly Hills Middle School)was opened to grades 7 – 9.

A new wing was added in 1952, including a new gymnasium, a cafeteria andtwenty-nine additional classrooms.

By the late 1960’s the fifty year old buildingthat we remember was no longer adequate.

1970 was the year that constructionbegan on a new, larger facility. The old stonebuilding was demolished and the newbuilding was opened in 1972. Enrollmentpeaked at 3200 students but then declined.In September 1981, the ninth grade joinedthe high school population.
