4 What are you good at? Tell your partner.

Orienteering is fun, but you have to be prepared. You need a map and a compass. Practise reading a map before you start!

Orienteering is an activity that you do in the countryside. You read a map and then you follow the route on the map. You can walk or run. If you want to, you can race in teams.

The keyLook around you. Are there any rivers, lakes or buildings? Landmarks like these help you to know where you are. There are symbols on the map which show the landmarks. If you dont know what the symbols mean, look at the key. Each landmark is a symbol on the key.

Compass pointsThe compass points are north, south, east and west. On a map, north is always at the top. A compass needle always points north. You can use a map and compass together to choose the right direction.

Tips: Dont forget your map and compass. Have you got yours? Dont get lost! Follow the route carefully and use landmarks to help you.
