UDF pattern for the Portuguese Mauser rifle issued to South African troops in

German Southwest campaign 1914/15. The rifle and its associated bandolier

were only in use for a limited period of time as the rifles were withdrawn from UDF

use once the German Southwest campaign was concluded. UDF marking to belt

which has 10 enclosed pouches. Good original condition.

Left-hand side of action marked "SANDERS BOROUGH" and right-hand side of

action marked "LONDON" . Turn-off barrel of 1,5" and .40cal. Engraving to

action, silver-wire inlay to stock which also carries inlaid initials. Good overall

condition.

B9 Mortimer Flintlock Pistol R 15000.00

Ca. 1875. Octagonal barrel of 8" length and .62cal. marked "Mortimer London"

Intercepting safety to cock, engraved lock marked to " Mortimer" . Acorn finial to

engraved trigger guard. Brass tipped ramrod, fine wrap-around chequering to grip.

Good plus original condition.

B10 .50 Cal. Stepens Percussion Pistol R 5500.00

Octagonal barrel of 5,9" with under-rib housing ramrod. Engraved back-action

lock marked "Stepens" with extensive engraving to lock & hammer. Extended

tang to back of trigger guard, acorn finial to front. Wrap-around chequering. Iron

butt plate. Escutcheon behind barrel-tang. Nipple needs to be replaced, some

loss of definition to barrel edges. Crisp lock. Should clean-up well.

No makers name to 3,5" barrels of .50cal. which carries English proof marks. Iron

captive ramrod below barrels. Right hand hammer spring U/S, left-hammer has

top of hammer spur missing. Engraving to action and hammers.

B12 Pepperbox Pistol by "ROBBINS & LAWRENCE CO." R 9500.00

Made in Windsor Vermont from 1851 to 1854. One of approx. 7000 of these

pepperbox were manufactured in three variations and two calibers. Serial no.

908T. Five 3,6" tilting barrels of .28cal. marked to "ROBBINS & LAWRENCE

CO." Extensive engraving to frame, barrels, ring, trigger guard & wood grips.

Good original condition.

B13 Turn-Over Boxlock Percussion Pocket Pistol R 7500.00

By "J. Pugh" English proofed, percussion with engraving to action, trigger guard

and hammer. Finely chequered grip. Turn-off barrels of 2,5" length and .45cal.

Extremely good original condition with colour case-hardening to hammer and

action.

B14 Brass-framed Boxlock Percussion Coat Pistol R 3000.00

Smooth bore with 3,6" length .45cal. octagonal barrel. London proofed. Folding

trigger to engraved brass box lock action. Crisp action, good nipple. Finely

engraved walnut grip with escutcheon plate. Good to good plus condition.

B15 Screw-Barrel Flintlock .50cal. Muff Pistol R 3950.00

"Warranted" to frame, coat of arms engraving below cock. English proof marks,

and extensive to pistol. Wrap-round chequering to grip which had an escutcheon,

now missing to it. Some wear to chequering, rest good overall.

B16 Brass Barrelled Gibson Blunderbuss Pistol R 14000.00

Flared brass 8" barrel with English proof marks and "London" marked barrel.

Brass pipe, trigger guard, butt cap and ornate escutcheon to grip. Steel lock

marked "T. Gibson" . Grip shows signs of an earlier repair.

B17 Patt 1822 20 Bore FlintLock Pistol R 2000.00

Round 5" barrel which is shorter than standard and ELG within a circle proof mark

leads one to question authenticity of pistol. Crown over VC to lock and VC on

barrel. Repair to grip, rest good working condition.

B18 Double Barrelled O/U .44cal Flintlock Pistol R 3950.00

Cock spring U/S, replacement screw to grip. Cock jaw missing. Fair condition. In

need of a rebuild.

B19 O/U Double Barrel .50cal. Flintlock Pistol R 6000.00

Barrels marked "3 & 4" respectively so gun was possibly 2nd model of a pair of

pistols. Barrels 3" in length, action marked "I Stypper & Co.". Proof marks to

bottom of action. Which has an intercepting safety to it. Good working order.

B20 Percussion Pistol By H. Adkins Of London R 4000.00

Octagonal 20bore, 5" barrel with "London" to top of barrel. Lock marked to "H.

Adkins" Intercepting safety to hammer. Brass trigger guard with acorn finial and

scroll engraving. Brass tipped ebony ramrod. Crisp lock, good plus overall

condition.

B21 .48 cal. Boxlock Percussion Pistol R 2000.00

Octagonal detachable barrel of 3". Some light engraving to action. Fair to good

condition.

B22 Brass Barrelled .45cal. Robinson Flintlock Pistol R 7950.00

Trigger guard release to hinged triangular knife blade below 4" barrel. Brass

frame marked "Robinson" with engraving to opposite side. A few very light dings

to barrel. Good overall.

B23 Pair of Flintlock Pistols by Smith of London. R 30000.00

Duelling pistols with round 10,75" barrels of 14 bore. Engraved barrels "London"

marked whilst locks are marked to "Smith" . Intercepting safeties to cocks. Coat

of arms escutcheon to grip which also features ornate heavy butt plates. Ramrod

absent from one of the pistols. Extensive silver wire inlays to woodwork. A very

neat and subdued elegance to a pair of pistols that have seen very little use.

B24 Pair of "Onorrtnopd" Flintlock Duelling Pistols R 12000.00

16 Bore octagon to round 11,5" barrels which carry the name "O. NORRTOPD"

to top flats along with proof stamps. Inlaid ornate grip cap with extended tangs,

Finial to engraved trigger guard. Highly ornate woodwork to stock with silver wire

inlays. Dummy ramrods to fore-ends. Some slipping to cock on first pistol, 2nd

one extremely crisp. Good original overall.

B25 Pair of Bennet Flintlock Pistols R 30000.00

Octagonal 8,25", .58 caliber, barrels marked to "BENNET ROYAL EXCHANGE

LONDON" . Locks marked to "BENNET" . Horn tipped ram rods, wrap-around

chequering to grip. Engraved, hooked trigger guard with acorn finial. Good to very

good original condition.

B26 Pair Of Royett Flintlock Pistols R 25000.00

Highly ornate pistols with gold-plated round 7,5" barrels of .62 caliber. Gold plated

extensively engraved fore-end plates. Heavy engraved grip cap and trigger guard

which features acorn finial. Engraving to walnut pistol grip which also features a

floral metal inlay. Horn ramrods show some insect damage which is not apparent

until removal of rods. Hammer of one of the pistols displays some loss of plated

finish, otherwise pistols are in very good original condition. Obviously a set of

pistols that were built for some-one of means.

B27 Composed Pair Of .48cal .Flintlock Muff Pistols R 7500.00

Both pistols display virtually identical coats of arms to right hand sides. One is

marked to "H .Nock" and the other to "Richards" . Both good original but the

Richards displays some light pitting to the name.

B28 Pair Of Moore .49cal Flintlock Muff Pistols R 12000.00

English proofs below 2" barrels. Both pistols marked to "Moore Chichester" .

Both top jaws missing. Pistols in good original condition but for missing top jaws.

B29 Indian Matchlock R 14000.00

.58 cal. barrel of 45,75" with an OAL of 64". A high quality early Indian gun with

gold inlay to the flared muzzle and also decorative gold inlay to the breech area.

Iron reinforced area to the barrel band and also iron plates to either side of the

lock area and area surrounding the trigger which features border detailing. Ornate

trigger. Repaired crack to the fore-end. Overall good condition.

B30 Japanese Matchlock R 14000.00

.45cal Barrel of 21,5" and 32,5" OAL. Engraving pattern to the iron barrel which is

typically flared at the muzzle. Brass lock trigger guard and trigger. Japanese

characters into the stock behind the barrel. Rather good original condition.

B31 John Hayton.40cal./28ga. Combination - Cased R 9500.00

Somewhat battered case containing cleaning rods plus accessories. Case

marked to "Theophilus Murcott" . Relatively short barrelled variant with 20"

factory length barrels which are marked to "John Hayton Grahamstown" and

36" OAL locks marked to "J. Hayton" . Patch box with much colour case-

hardening to it. High percentage overall finish to gun. Overall good to good plus

condition.

B32 Cased Joseph Bourne S/S 15ga. Shotgun Percussion R 15000.00

Damascus barrels of 29,5" and OAL of 46,5". Gold in-lay to barrels reading

"Joseph Bourne Maker London". Barrels feature a high percentage of original

browning and feature relatively good bores. Engraved lock plates also feature

"Joseph Bourne" in gold inlay. Well figured stock with wrap-around chequering

to both wrist & fore-end. Original wooden case features makers silver makers

plate reading "Joseph Bourne Maker London". Includes original leather shot

flask, nipple wrench and cleaning brush. Case overall in very good original

condition. A decent grade of gun in good original condition.

B33 Cased Geo. Fuller .50cal. Percussion Target Rifle R 65000.00

Whitworth rifling to 34,5" barrels and an OAL of 51,25". Barrel marked

"Whitworth Patent" & "Geo. Fuller 280 Strand London ". Lock plate is marked

"Geo Fuller" with engraving to plate. Extensive engraving to trigger guard as well.

Horn fore end tip to stock which features wrap around chequering to fore-end and

two panels to pistol grip. Engraved steel butt plate with extended tang. Horn grip

cap with sling swivel. Cased in later period oak case, complete with micrometer

front & rear sight kit and spares in leather-covered wooden holder, powder flask,

cleaning equipment, keys and replacement nipple. Gun is in extremely good

original condition and has a mint bore. It appears to have seen very little use and

a gun in this condition is seldom encountered. Geo Fuller was a highly reputable

London Gunsmith.

B34 12bore Percussion Rifle R 4000.00

Octagonal 32" barrel and OAL of 48,25". No makers name visible. Typical English

big-bore rifle lines. Rifled bore in poor condition. Fore-end stock bound with

rawhide. Three leaf rear sight, ramrod missing. Overall fair to poor condition.

B35 R. Hughes Whitworth .45cal. Percussion Rifle R 4500.00

"Whitworth" rifling to 24"full-stock barrel with OAL of 41,75"."Enfield" and "R.

Hughes" markings to lock. Rear sight slider missing. Ramrod & rear swivel

missing. Fair to good condition.

B36 Bobejaanboud R 12500.00

.80cal. (8ga.) with 45" full-stocked barrel and 61,5" OAL. "London" marking to

lock. Double-set trigger. Brass butt plate, trigger guard and pipes. Full length

stinkwood stock which has a crack to fore end. Typical of the firearms used by the

early settlers and voortrekkers, the gun was more than likely assembled by one of

the early Cape Gunsmiths form utilising a British barrel and lock. There is a fair bit

of history available concerning the original owner who was P.J. Rademan from the

farm Kaffersdam near Douglas. Relatively good condition.

B37 Patt. 1858 .58cal Rifle R 4500.00

Barrel of 33" has a bayonet lug fitting to muzzle. OAL of 48,75".

B38 12ga Pedersoli S/S Shotgun. - Replica R 7500.00

Includes Black powder, leather shot flask. Very good condition. There should be

renewed interest in this piece now that black powder is economically available on

the local market once more.

Double edged blade, composition sheath, U within M marking confirming SA

military issue. Very familiar to most Bush War veterans. VGC.

One of 5000 P1907 bayonets cut down to Jungle carbine/SLR Bowie blade

configuration by the Rhodesian Army. Good condition.

C6 Patt 1888 .303 Bayonet R 1250.00

Made by Sanderson Sheffield, dated "6.00" , with various military inspection

stamps. Good to good plus condition.

C7 Patt 88 Bayonet R 350.00

No scabbard. "EFD & Crown VR" markings to blade which is dated "6-97" .

Good original condition.

C8 Patt 1888 .303 Bayonet R 1250.00

Manufactured by "WILKINSON LONDON " 8-98. Wooden scales marked "SALH

1899-1900 & 1140 WOOD G1" with inspection markings to scales as well. Crisp

markings to blade, good plus condition.

C9 British Pattern 1888.303 Bayonet R 1250.00

For the Lee-Enfield & Lee-Metford rifles. Bayonet made by Enfield, Crown V.R.

stamps and dated "11-97" . Complete with frog. Good to good plus original

condition.

C10 Patt 1888 Mark 1 .303 Bayonet R 2750.00

Particularly scarce early model with three rivets to grip. WD and sold-out-of-

service addorsed arrows to blade. Fine surface pitting to blade and ding to steel

top mount of scabbard. Fair to good condition.

Round 25,5" barrel with a folding three leaf rear sight and British Broad Arrow

ownership stamp and acceptance/inspection marking to the barrel signifying

British Military usage at some stage of its career. It also carries Broad Arrow

markings to the butt. During the early stages of WW1 the Royal Flying Corps

purchased model 1886 rifles chambered for the .45-90 Sharps cartridge with

special incendiary bullets designed to ignite the hydrogen gas in German airships

and it is believed that this is one the RFC purchased rifles. Serial No 152736A

signifies 1912 manufacture and this manufacturing date would be consistent with

RFC use. Full length magazine, rifle still displays good percentage original finish

to the barrel, action and lever fading to brownish colour. Rifle still carries original

varnish finish and as expected displays some dings and scratches. Good to good

plus overall condition.

condition. Once a lovely piece. Canvas and leather case externally good,

Clone of the celebrated Browning Model 5. Ventilated top rib to 26" (660mm)

barrel,1/2 choke, chequered wrist & fore-end. The Atis has the capacity to take a

stretched Browning-type magazine and can readily be lengthened for 3-gun

shooting.

Conditions of Sale

The following Terms and Conditions as amended by any postal notice or verbal announcement during the sale, constitutes the entire terms and conditions under which the property listed in this catalogue, is offered for sale by Classic Arms and any consignor for the said property that we act for. 1) As used herein, the “bid price” shall mean the price at which a lot is knocked down by the auctioneer, to a purchaser and the term “purchase price” shall mean the aggregate of: a) The bid price, b) A PREMIUM PAYABLE BY THE PURCHASER OF 12,5% OF THE BID PRICE, + VAT at 14% thereon (i.e. a total premium of 14.25%) c) And where specifically stated by the auctioneer VAT at 14% of the bid price. It is recorded that the consignor has authorised Classic Arms to retain the premium payable on each lot as part of our remuneration and that the VAT payable on such premium is in addition to such premium.

2. On the fall of the Hammer the highest bidder will have been deemed to have purchased the lot being offered and to have: a) assumed full responsibility and liability for the ownership of that lot in accordance with the terms and conditions contained herein b) to undertake to settle the aggregate purchase price within a maximum of seven calendar days from the date of sale. In the case of all firearms it is specifically recorded that the purchaser is deemed to have assumed full liability for ownership and payment in accordance with the terms and conditions contained herein irrespective of the granting or not of a South African Police Services licence or permit for possession of the said lot. All lots requiring licences shall be retained by Classic Arms pending proof of issuance of said licences. Should a licence for any lot, for any reason whatsoever, be declined, then the purchaser may require Classic Arms or a registered arms and ammunition dealer of the purchasers choice to resell such lot on the purchasers behalf. Such sale shall be conducted against the prevailing terms and conditions of the chosen dealer at time of resale and, irrespective of the Auction purchase price, at the price determined in agreement with the auction purchaser and the dealer

It is specifically noted that Classic Arms may in no way be held liable for a shortfall if any, between the auction purchase price and the resale price. Under no circumstances shall any lot requiring SAPS licensing be released to any person or body not duly authorised to be in legal possession of said lot, and unless all monies due have been settled in full and in accordance with the terms and conditions contained herein. No lots shall be deemed to have been paid for until all monies due have been delivered in cash or in Bank Cleared funds. All purchases may be paid for in cash, by Master Card or VISA, American Express or Diners Club International, or by cashiers. or Bank Guaranteed Cheque. A further premium of 5% of the aggregate purchase price including VAT thereon will be levied for all Credit or Charge Card settlements. No cashier’s cheque will be deemed to constitute payment until the effects thereof have been cleared into the Classic Arms Trust Account. If the foregoing or any other conditions contained herein are not complied with by the purchaser, in addition to any other remedies available to us and the consignor by law, including but without limitation to, the right to hold the purchaser liable for the purchase price, then we at our sole discretion may: a) cancel the sale, retaining as liquidation costs any amounts paid by the purchaser, b) resell the property.

3. All payments to be made within 7 days. Property sold at auction and not paid for in full or collected, within 4 (Four) elapsed Months from the date of the auction, shall be deemed to be abandoned UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTIFIED. The auctioneer reserves the right to dispose of the property in any manner he sees fit and recover reasonable administration and/or storage costs from the disposal of said property and/or the purchaser.

No subsequent claim arising from such a disposal shall be entertained and the auctioneer may not be held liable for any losses incurred by either the consignor or purchaser, or any other party, in this regard either publicly or privately and in such event to hold the purchaser liable for all costs including our commission and expenses for both sales, all other charges due hereunder, our attorneys fees and incidental charges. All fees commissions, bid prices and duties not settled promptly by the purchaser in terms of this clause 2 shall bear interest at South African Bankers prime lending rate plus 3 percent from the seventh day following the sale until settlement is received in full.

In the event that a purchaser does not effect collection within four months of the sale date, of any item purchased, Classic Arms reserves the right to charge a storage fee of ZAR 150-00 per calendar month or part thereof. Such fee being payable monthly in advance from the first day of the month within which the four month period shall expire. In the event that the purchaser fails in his obligation to Classic Arms to pay such fee, Classic Arms, may at its own discretion, resell such item to recover such fee. 4. We reserve the right to withdraw any property at any time prior to the actual sale of such property. Unless actually stated by the auctioneer, all lots shall be offered against their catalogued number and no lot shall be divided for sale.

5. We reserve the right to reject any bid. The highest bid acknowledged by the auctioneer shall be deemed to be the final bid price. In the event of any dispute between bidders or, if in the sole opinion of the auctioneer he doubts the validity of a bid, the auctioneer shall have the sole right to determine the successful bid or to re-offer the property in dispute for sale. Our sale records shall be conclusive in any dispute during or after conclusion of the sale.

6. If for any reason beyond our control, including but not limited to, fire, theft, acts of God, or insurrection, we are prevented from delivering the property to the purchaser, then we will be liable only for the sum actually paid therefore by the purchaser and shall in no event include payment for consequential or incidental damages. Classic Arms accepts no liability for any losses of whatsoever nature caused by any legislative changes in regard to the possession, by individuals or bodies, of firearms or ammunition.

7. If a lot is offered subject to a reserve (this being the confidential minimum price required by the consignor) then Classic Arms reserves the right to open the bidding or to bid on the consignor’s behalf in order to protect such reserve. Classic Arms shall not bid on the consignor’s behalf above such reserve. IN NO EVENT MAY A CONSIGNOR BID ON ANY PROPERTY OFFERED FOR SALE BY SAID CONSIGNOR.

8. All lots are sold “Voetstoets”. ALL STATEMENTS CONTAINED IN THE CATALOG OR IN ANY SALE DOCUMENTATION AS TO THE AUTHENTICITY, VALIDITY, AUTHORSHIP, PERIOD CULTURE, SOURCE, PROVENANCE, RARITY, CONDITION, IMPORTANCE OR HISTORICAL VALUE, ARE STATEMENTS OF OPINION AND ARE NOT REPRESENTATIONS OR WARRANTIES. 9. If we undertake packaging or handling of any lots on the purchaser’s behalf it is done so entirely at the purchasers risk. We are not liable for any acts or omissions of carriers or packers including those recommended by us. Such carriers or packers may carry there own insurance and any claims for loss or damage should be addressed directly to them.

10. These Conditions of Sale and the respective rights of the purchaser and Classic Arms, are governed by the laws of South Africa. By bidding at an auction in person, or by agent, order-bid or telephone or other means, the buyer or bidder agrees to be bound by these Conditions of Sale. Any dispute controversy or claim arising out of or relating to this Agreement, or the breach, termination or validity thereof, brought by or against Classic Arms (but not including claims brought against the consignor by the purchaser of the lots consigned hereunder) shall be resolved by the parties in 10. These Conditions of Sale, shall bind the successors and assigns of all bidders and purchasers and inure to the benefit of successors and assigns. No waiver amendment or modification of the terms hereof (other than posted notices or oral announcements during the sale) shall bind us unless specifically stated in writing signed by us.

11. Absentee Bids. As a service to those bidders that are unable to attend the actual auction, we may at our sole discretion accept bids in advance of sale by telephone, or in writing on the bidding forms provided in the back of the sale catalogue. Please note that we cannot accept “buy” bids and all bids must clearly state the maximum (excluding buyers premium and any applicable taxes) bid that the bidder is willing to pay. In the event that identical absentee bids are received then the first bid received shall take. We accept no responsibility for not executing an absentee bid for any reason whatsoever. 12. Estimate prices. As a service to our clients, we furnish presale estimates for all lots. These estimates are intended as a guide to current market value and represent no warranty to bidder or seller as to the actual price. Bidding normally begins at 50% of the estimate but the final price may be more or less than the estimate value. 13. Sale Increments. The following increments apply to all lots bid for.
