THERES STILL TIME TO HOST A FRESH AIR
CHILD IN ALBANY AREA
CAPITAL DISTRICT - June 30th, 2014 marked the be-ginning of Fresh Air summer experiences for thousands of inner-city children and their volunteer host families as The Fresh Air Fund kicked off its 138th summer of serving New York City children. By volunteering as a host family in Albany Area, NY, you can share the pure joys of sum-mer with a Fresh Air child in your own backyard! The Fresh Air Fund is currently seeking more families to
give inner-city children a Fresh Air experience this summer. Fresh Air summers are fi lled with children running barefoot through the grass, gazing at star-fi lled skies or swimming for the fi rst time. Each summer, over 4,000 inner-city children visit suburban, rural and small town communities across 13 states from Virginia to Maine and Canada through The Fresh Air Funds Volunteer Host Family Program. The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profi t agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. Fresh Air children are boys and girls, from six to 18 years old, who live in New York City. Children on fi rst-time visits are six to 12 years old and stay for one or two weeks. Children who are re-invited by host families may continue with The Fresh Air Fund through age 18 and can enjoy extended trips. Over 65 per-cent of all children are reinvited to stay with their host fami-lies, year after year. For more information on hosting a Fresh Air child, please contact Tenniel Hansen at 518-441-4407 or visit The Fresh Air Fund online at www.freshair.org.

TIPS ON SAVING MONEY WITH AN HVAC SYSTEM(NAPS)Theres good news for homeowners who want to reduce their energy costs. With a little bit of homework, savings are possible.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), most Americans are paying more for electricity and natural gas than they did four years ago, with the average household utility bill now about $1,900 each year. And, according to the Department of Energy (DOE), heating and cooling accounts for about 56 percent of the energy use in a typical U.S. home, making it the largest energy expense for most homes.
To reduce these costs, the experts at the Luxaire brand of heating and air conditioning rec-ommend the following:
Adjust your thermostat. By raising your thermostat just a few degrees in mild tem-peratures and lowering it in cooler temperatures, you can help your heating and cooling sys-
tem work less to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature. Programming your thermostat to accommodate your familys time away from home and sleeping schedules will also help to ensure that your system is operating only when you need it.
Install a dehumidifi er. Humidity can make the air feel hotter and heavier in warm weather. By removing the humidity, the air will feel drier and cooler and you will be able to rely less heavily on your heating and cooling system to make the air comfortable.
Perform regular maintenance. Clean air fi lters, seal any duct leaks and make sure the areas around your system are clear of obstructions. According to the EPA, improper insulation can reduce system effi ciency by up to 30 percent.
Have your existing home comfort system inspected and serviced by a qualifi ed tech-nician. The technician will make sure your system is working properly and at peak effi ciency. A knowledgeable technician will also be able to recommend a new, more effi cient replacement system, such as ENERGY STARqualifi ed equipment that can help you save money on energy bills.

HOME PROJECTS PERFECT FOR 'STAYCATIONERS' The "staycation" was a concept many first acquainted themselves with when the economy started to struggle and men and women were forced to tighten their belts. In lieu of trips overseas or family trips to popular tourist destinations, many men and women opted to stay home and save their money.
While the idea of a staycation makes practical sense, many found that idling away a week of hard-earned vacation at home could grow somewhat boring after a few days. But whether a staycation is a week-long escape from the office or a three-day weekend, homeowners can tackle a few projects around the house to turn their time at home into one marked by pro-ductivity instead of boredom.
* Add a splash of color. One of the easiest and most effective ways to give a home a new look is to repaint the home's interior. Such a project can be a small-scale undertaking focusing on one or two rooms in the house or a more ambitious exercise in which more lived-in rooms like a family room and/or kitchen are given an entirely new color scheme. When removing old paint, consider using sanding pads to make the task easier than the days or yore, when paint was often tediously scraped off of walls with a putty knife. Parents on staycation can even involve the whole family in their painting project, allowing youngsters to choose new colors for their rooms and do a little work with the paintbrush as well.
* Say farewell to old faucets. Faucets have a unique way of making bathrooms appear dated. But vanity faucets can quickly and easily be replaced so long as the main problem is appear-ance and not plumbing. Homeowners who suspect potential plumbing problems with sinks should seek a consultation with a professional before replacing vanity faucets. Once the go-ahead has been granted, homeowners can spend a weekend or a day or two during their
staycation replacing vanity faucets around the home. Though the project might seem small, it can yield dra-matic and aesthetically ap-pealing results.
* Consider some eco-friendly updates. Homeowners who live in older homes might be able to turn their time away from the office into an exercise in going green around their homes. Eco-friendly updates, which can include replacing old air conditioners with newer, more ef-ficient models or replacing older toilets with more newer models designed to conserve water, may even earn homeowners tax breaks and will almost certainly lead to lower utility bills. Additional eco-friendly and easy home improvement projects that can be tackled in a day or two include replacing inefficient and wasteful water fixtures and installing a programmable thermostat that makes it easier to control heating and cooling costs and conserve energy.
* Stain the garage floor. Many homeowners treat their garages as a workspace, and as a result garages tend to be ignored when making cosmetic changes. Staining the garage floor can clear away any oil spots and paint stains that may have accumulated over the years, and a clean and well-maintained garage can increase a home's resale value.
Staycations have grown increasingly popular over the last half decade, as many homeowners are opting to forgo costly vacations in favor of staying home to pad their nest eggs. While it's important for staycationers to squeeze in some rest and relaxation, it also can be beneficial to tackle a few projects around the house during time away from the office.
DID YOU KNOW?Landscape fabrics are used to prevent weed growth while still allowing air, oxygen and wa-ter to flow to and from the soil. Landscape fabrics are a chemical-free way to prevent weed growth, endearing them to eco-friendly homeowners. Landscape fabrics, once laid, also are a far less labor-intensive method to prevent weed growth, as they can be effective for several years, during which homeowners can expect to perform little or no maintenance. In addi-tion, many homeowners prefer landscape fabrics because they can help the soil effectively maintain moisture during dry periods, when gardens might otherwise be highly susceptible to drought. Once put down, landscape fabric can be covered with mulch to add aesthetic appeal.

HOW TO CREATE A RAINWATER HARVESTING SYSTEM
Rainwater collection is a way to conserve water that can be adopted by both private homeowners and businesses. Har-vesting water during peak times of precipitation ensures wa-ter will be on hand during drought or when water restrictions are implemented. Making use of rainwater reduces reliance on underground wells or municipal water systems. Harvest-ing rainwater also can help prevent fl ooding and soil erosion.
The average homeowner can collect thousands of gallons of rainwater each year. To learn just how much water can be harvested, as well as how many natural resources can be produced from that rain, visit www.save-the-rain.com, where men and women can calculate their rain collection poten-tial by geographic location and average rainfall. Afterward, homeowners may be inclined to establish their own rainwa-ter harvesting systems. Here is how to get started.
* Determine your roofi ng material. Potable water can be har-vested from homes with sheet metal or slate roofi ng. Clay or adobe tiles also may be acceptable. Asphalt, wood shingles and tar roofs may leach toxic chemicals into the water, mak-ing it unsafe for drinking. This rainwater may only be collect-ed to use for irrigation methods or washing cars and outdoor items.
* Check gutter materials. Some gutters are made with lead soldering components. A commercial lead swab test can help you determine if there is lead present in your gutters. At a later time you can choose to replace the gutters if you desire a potable supply of water.
* Invest in a collection tank or barrel. A number of manufac-turers off er prefabricated rain collection systems complete with collection barrels. Otherwise, you can use your own barrel or tank to house the collected water. Ensure it is large enough to handle the volume of water collected.
* Purchase and install leaf guards. If your home is surrounded
by many trees, you probably accumulate leaf and tree debris in your home gutters and downspouts. Leaf guards will help keep the gutters clear and increase water fl ow through the water collection system.
* Create a water collection area. A portion of the gutter sys-tem should be removed so that it connects to the collection barrel or tank. As the rain falls, it will run down the roof and into the gutters before it streams into the downspouts. The downspout connected to the tank will deposit the water di-rectly inside. Filters can be installed to help block the fl ow of debris.
* Outfi t the tank for overfl ow and water usage. A spigot and hose connection makes it easy to use the collected water for outdoor purposes. Many rainwater collection systems are designed with an overfl ow safeguard that will prevent the water from backing up through the system. It will divert the rainwater back out of the downspout when the barrel or tank is full.
A rainwater collection system harnesses a natural source of water to be used for gardens and other outdoor purposes. This water doesnt contain chlorine or other additives, mak-ing it relatively clean and safe to use. Homeowners should check to see if a permit is necessary to install a rainwater col-lection system and then begin gathering water for various uses.
Rather than have rainwater fl ow out of downspouts to the ground, homeowners can collect that rainwater in barrels to use it as a sustainable source of water.

FAST FACTS ABOUT GRASSA lush, green lawn is coveted by many current and would-be homeowners. Not only can a beautiful landscape make a home feel more welcoming, but it also increases the resale value of a property.
Frequent watering, proper fertilization, pest management, and mowing are all essential components of lawn mainte-nance. But there is more to those beautiful blades of grass than just aesthetic appeal. The following are some interest-ing facts about grass that even the most devoted lawn en-thusiasts might be surprised to learn.
* Grass is de ned as any plant of the family Gramineae, a group of vascular plants that grow across the globe.
* There are as many as 10,000 varieties of grass in the world. These range from grass to rice to wheat to bamboo.
* Many grasses are annual or perennial herbs with brous roots and rhizomes.
* Grass can withstand many di erent climates and has been discovered at the North Pole and at the equator.
* Twenty percent of Earth's vegetation is comprised of grass.
* Grasses have been transformed into paper and home decor items. Bamboo, which is a type of grass, is frequently used for ooring because it is durable and sustainable.
* Grass is mostly comprised of water, which makes up about 80 percent of grass and 90 percent of grass clippings.
* A typical lawn will have about six grass plants per square inch. Some lawns may have millions of grass plants.
* The average lawn releases enough oxygen to sustain four families of four.
