THE DNA OF THE SOUL A NEW TANYA STUDY SERIES

CLIFTON PARK - Rabbi Yossi Rubin will lead “A Taste of Tanya- A Tale of Two Souls” class at 495 Moe Rd, 7:00 pm on four consecutive Tuesdays beginning with January 14th, A Tale of Two Souls, Part I- Man in search of Identity. On January 21st, the series will continue with “A Tale of Two Souls, Part II, Rede-fi ning the make-up of Jewish Personality”, January 28th, “The Ten Building Blocks of Creation, the Roadmap of the Human personality” and fi nally on February 4th, “Your Unique Mis-sion in this World, Act Locally, Change Globally”. The Tanya is the magnum opus of Kabbalah and Chassidic philosophy. The Tanya compacts four millennia of Jewish wisdom to an-swer the great personal and existential questions of life. It has revolutionized the way we think about G-d, the human soul, the world and our place in it. The classes are free and open to the public. TU B’SHVAT CELEBRATIONCLIFTON PARK - Join Clifton Park Chabad for a Tu B’Shvat Celebration at 5pm on Thursday, January 16th at the Clifton Park - Halfmoon Library. The family program will begin with a craft & stories for the children and a Tu Bshvat discussion for adults, continue with short video clips and fruit snacks for all! Tu B’Shevat, the 15th of Shevat on the Jewish calendar is the day that marks the beginning of a “new year” for trees. This is the season in which the earliest-blooming trees in the Land of Israel emerge from their winter sleep and begin a new fruit-bearing cycle. We mark the day of Tu B’Shevat by eat-ing fruit, particularly from the kinds that are singled out by the Torah in its praise of the bounty of the Holy Land: grapes, fi gs, pomegranates, olives and dates. On this day we remem-ber that “man is a tree of the fi eld”, and refl ect on the lessons we can derive from our botanical analogue. The Celebration is free and open to the public; no affi liation or membership needed. For more information or to RSVP contact Leah at 495-0779 or [email protected]

TOWN OF HALFMOONHALFMOON - The Halfmoon Town Board will present the ABSOLUTE CHARTER from the NYS Dept. of Education to the Halfmoon Historical Society on Wed. Jan 15th at 7:00 PM. This is an important event in the progress of our Historical work. The charter is the same as a not for profit incorporation in the state of NY. This is the formal recognition we have long desired. The process was started in 1993. We have previously obtained not for profit status for Federal Tax exemption purposes. We will now be qualified to apply for NYS Sales Tax exemption. We are now qualified to apply jointly with the Town for grant applications which normally enhances the chances for success. We would love to see as many of our folks present as possible. Inter-ested people at public meetings make for a stronger public awareness of our work. This year we will be making a more public presence at Town Board Meetings.

SEEKING HOST FAMILIESCAPITAL DISTRICT - Since 1952, International Fellowship, Inc. a non-profit organization has been successfully exchanging students to and from the United States. All that is required of a host family is to provide room, board, laundry facilities and some tender loving care. Host families can be married, single, have kids, no kids- even grandparents can apply. Please visit our website for more informa-tion at www.internationalfellowship.org, write to International Fellowship, Inc., P.O. Box 130, Westfield, New York 14787, email [email protected], or call 1-800-647-8839.

Handsome and stately- that’s Licorice. This great pittie mix is looking for a home.

Hi there, I’m Scarlet. I have a torbie coat - that means tiger with orange. My fur is medium length and real

soft. My former family had young kids and a dog, and I got along fine with everybody. Then a new baby came along, and became allergic to me. So here I am, and I’m a little confused by this big change in my life.

That’s why I seem a little shy. But I like to be petted and after I get to know you I get over my shyness. You

can brush me and that will help us bond, and keep my coat looking its best. I’m still young and playful so

we can have lots of fun together.

BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS LOOKING FOR MENTORS

CAPITAL DISTRICT - Big Brothers Big Sisters is looking for mentors in Al-bany, Schenectady, Saratoga, and Rensselaer Counties. We are the oldest and largest provider of one-to-one youth mentoring services in the Unit-ed States. In the Capital Region, we have been matching caring adults

with local children for 50 years. Our mentoring relationships are proven to be a positive influ-ence on the life of a child. Currently, we serve over 500 children, but there are over 100 more waiting for mentors. If you want to learn more about volunteering, contact Brigette Callahan at 862-1250 x15, or by email at [email protected].

HELP KEEP A VOLUNTEER WARM THIS WINTER

CAPITAL DISTRICT - The USS SLATER has launched their 15th Annual Winter Fund Drive. It’s time to “help keep a volunteer warm this winter.” According to Chairman Bartley “BJ” Costello, “The Winter Fund Drive was conceived back in 1998. After the first season of public visitation, we realized that we did not have enough cash to get us through the winter. When we closed for the season, our income stream ceased, but our expenses continued. It was a case of mak-ing lemonade out of lemons. We reached out to our members and asked them each to donate $100 to help get us through the winter. The response was overwhelming. Their donations got us through that first winter and then some. We’ve continued the drive every year since.” The appeal enables the volunteers to keep working on USS SLATER’s restoration throughout the winter months. It has become an important part of the Museum’s operating fund. USS SLATER is supported by a network of 3,000 members in all 50 states, including Navy veter-ans, their families, and history-minded friends. In 2013 the only public funding the Museum received was a $1000 City of Albany Arts Grant to support public programming. Private dona-tions provide half of the Museum’s operating budget. The efforts of the SLATER’s volunteers were rewarded in 2012 when the ship was designated a National Historic Landmark and in 2013 the Museum received a New York State preservation award. Volunteers donate an aver-age of 16,000 hours a year to the project. Winter Fund donors are welcome at any level. Visit the website at www.ussslater.org for more information. Museum memberships begin at $25. Members receive the Museum’s quarterly newsletter “Trim But Deadly,” which features historic articles, photos and updates on the volunteer’s progress, as well as free admission to the ship. Donations may be mailed to USS SLATER, P.O. Box 1926, Albany, NY 12201.

Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to answer me in this neces- sity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh, Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Sweet mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal, you who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all in- stances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days, after 3 days the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. Favor granted. LMC

TIPS TO MAKE OWNING A CAR

MORE AFFORDABLE(StatePoint) From gas, park-ing permits and insurance premiums, to maintenance and repairs, owning a car can be an expensive prospect. But motorists can pave the way to lower costs by follow-ing a few clever rules of the road:

Reduce Your Rate: Shop around for auto insurance, as prices can vary widely between companies. For a cheaper rate, avoid purchas-ing a sporty or expensive ve-hicle. Insurance companies are more likely to give low rates to drivers of reliable cars that have safety features. Inquire into any discounts as-sociated with a clean driving record. And if you don’t log too many miles per week, you may also be eligible for a low-mileage discount.

Make Smart Repairs: The next time your vehicle needs a part replaced after a fender bender, opt for alternative collision repair parts, which are anywhere from 26 to 50 percent less expensive than parts issued by car companies. Such parts also often have warranties that exceed those off ered by the car companies.

On average, competition in the collision parts industry saves consumers approximately $1.5 billion a year. Car companies, however, are trying to prevent drivers from utilizing these less expensive parts by enforcing design patents on things like bumpers, hoods and mirrors, say experts.

Supporting consumer-friendly legislation, such as the Pro-moting Automotive Repair, Trade, and Sales (PARTS) Act, would mean more consumer choices and access to aff ordable repair parts in the future. More information about the PARTS Act can be found at www.KeepAutoPartsAff ordable.org.

Fuel Up Effi ciently: Regular maintenance to your vehicle will help it run more smoothly and effi ciently. So take care of your

car.

Pay attention to your route. With the right apps, you can make bumper-to-bumper traffi c a thing of the past. Sophisticated GPS-based technologies can steer you clear of the road blocks and jam-ups that leave you idling and wasting fuel.

For short trips, consider using your own two feet. It’s great ex-ercise and will save you a few pennies in the process. Make trips to the gas station worth your while by fi lling the tank completely. After all, you are using gas every time you idle waiting for a pump.

For most people, owning a car is not a luxury, but a ne-cessity. While some expenses associated with driving are unavoidable, there are steps you can take to make it a more aff ordable mode of transportation.
